5-0 out of 5 stars BUSINESS WRITING INSTRUCTION TAKES QUANTUM LEAP!
As a college business communication instructor and corporate writing consultant of 20+ years, I feel my career is about to take a quantum leap forward with my discovery of this magnificent compendium of materials.Mary Ellen Guffey has done ALL the hard work!Juicy, readable text:done.Riveting "inside" information on cool corporations:done.Web-based support?Manuals?PowerPoints?Videos?Done.Fresh writing prompts, some packaged with the research already done?Done. With my old text, I've been drowning in an attempt to supplement and update and enrich the dated material enough to keep it relevant and arresting. Now I'm finding that I have plenty of time to interact with students over their own writing and presentations.I've always felt one-on-one and small-group interaction to be a huge part of my mission as a classroom teacher. Thanks to Mary Ellen Guffey, I'm able to do more of it, while spending less time overall on take-home work.Thank you, Mary Ellen, from the trenches--not just for a marvelous tool, but for a whole toolbox full of them. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars REALLY Lame
It is not worth the paper it is printed on... even at the Amazon price.
4-0 out of 5 stars Read this if you write!
For anyone who writes in a business environment-which is probably most people reading this-The Business Style Handbook is an extremely useful reference. I especially appreciated the introductory material, which provides the basis for great marketing copy for those of us who write and edit for a living. And it's a great relief to have a handy reference for handling all those marketing-speak and tech-speak neologisms and inconsistencies.
5-0 out of 5 stars How the Business Style Handbook Helped Me
I'm glad I had a copy of The Business Style Handbook when a big argument erupted in my department. One group said you have to write "an NYSE stock" while another said you have to write "a NSYE stock." I took out a copy of The Business Style Handbook (which my wife gave me for Christmas to help me improve my e-mail) to settle the dispute. By the way, it should be written "an NYSE stock."It's one of the first times I've been on the right side of a grammar argument. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb content, poor presentation
I read the Pyramid Principle in 1995 and dutifully trained myself to use it, with a little help from a class with Ms. Minto.
4-0 out of 5 stars They should pipe this into a hospital room to save on anesthesia
It is VERY slow going, but you *do* get the impression that this is an important skill to have. The tips are good, and the examples are easy to comprehend. I dont think they should wait until you're in business to learn this. They should teach the Principle in highschool!... if you could stay awake long enough to learn it.

4-0 out of 5 stars You Must Practice What You Read
I purchased this book primarily because it was referenced by several authors of other Mckinsey books that I've read. I was taken aback by the price of the book but I'm of the school of thought that great ideas need not come in large packages. As like many of the other reviewers, I found this book a tough read and had to break it down into smaller bite size readings. What I did that help me tremedously was build a Pyramid chart capturing the SCQ ---Answer using sticky notes. Once built, I was able to easily see the ideas she was presenting and was able to clarify my thinking and writing substantially.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source for managers
This is one of those few books that is simple yet not simplistic. Book is written for corporate managers whose job responsibility is outside the decipline of finance, however who can benefit from knowing the finance at the fundamental level. Book does not go into "mechanics" of finance and focuses more on the "essense" of finance. Written with the simplicity of small business yet with questions to be asked in large corporations. I would strongly recommend this book to all my managers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and on an understandable level.
Helpful to managers to give them insight into where accountants are projecting and where hard numbers are coming from. You are able to see sources of manipulation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended to all business managers, both the novice and the experienced
Financial Intelligence: A Manager's Guide To Knowing What The Numbers Really Mean by Karen Berman and Joe Knight (owners of the Los Angeles-based Business Literacy institute) with management expert John Case is an innovative and "user friendly" instructional guide to proper and intelligible management of finances and business oriented decision making. Financial Intelligence is an impressive compendium of guidelines and information including the basics of financial measurement, reading income statements, balancing sheets, cash flow statements, separating hard data from the assumptions and estimates, the mechanics of analysis, calculating ratios, return on investment, working on capital, knowing the difference between cash and profit, financial literacy and transparency and how to recognize how the two can boost performance. Financial Intelligence is very strongly recommended to all business managers, both the novice and the experienced, as everyone has something to learn.

The elements of business writing give good point to look at.But the book is old and sometime give weird information. It's not an important book to have but, but still have some info.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, easy to read.
This book was easy to read and very helpful in communication skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars One the best guides for business writers
This book, with an obvious nod to Strunk and White (which it surpasses), lists 67 principles of good writing, with about two pages each of details and examples. 5-0 out of 5 stars Technical Writing
This book is very easy to read and understand. I ordered this book as a supplement to my current book used at my school. I would highly recommend this book to other new technical writers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Educational
As the title mentions, Technical Writing 101, provides real-world planning tips. I found it to be very engaging, informative and very easy to read (finished within 24 hours of receiving it). It also sparked ideas on how I could look at a lot of projects I'm personally working on. The way the book is organized doesn't overload you with "too" much information. It also is very generous in providing other resources for further research and knowledge.

Yes indeed this book was/is (I still crack it open)very helpful to me. Before I read this book, or took the class that used this book, I was a very bad speller. My grammer was poor and my writing technique was even worse. If this book helped me I am sure it will help you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for college and your career
Finally, a complete text that is always useful.I have read this book over and over... each time learning something new. It's great if you need a complete and extensive description or a quick overview. This book willgo from your college backpack to the desk of your new exciting job!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide to Business Writing
This book is an excellent tool for writing, especially for the non-native English writer. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a study guide with many examples that have been updated for the current business environment. The numerous samples and the grammar review are veryhelpful for studying the fundamentals. This book is extremely relevant in abusiness world crowded with a cornucopia of poor writing, misspelling, andincorrect grammar usage. 5-0 out of 5 stars How to Write a Proposal That's Accepted Every Time - You Need This Book!
I purchased this book earlier this year. While we don't often submit written proposals, we used the techniques to close over $200,000 in business in the first few months.
5-0 out of 5 stars It worked the FIRST TIME I used it
While I do not often submit many written proposals, since most of my negotiation is done over the phone or in person, the few written proposals I have been required to sumbit were accepted every time! The key was following the advice provided in this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not at all worth the price
Thank goodness my company paid for this book.In no way is it worth more than $100.Consideringing that every other page is a notes page, you effectively get a 60-page book.Exclude the related information (ex: sales questions, presentation tips) and maybe 15 pages of this book actually relate to writing a proposal.I have read most of the books out there on developing proposals and any of them are better than this one at helping you develop a proposal. And they cost a tenth as much. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A major contribution to technical analysis
Mr. Bollinger's book is unusual as books on technical analysis go. No promises of instant wealth here: rather, at the outset, Bollinger tells the reader that the marketplace is an uncertain arena. His view is that the old dictum "Buy low, sell high," is best viewed in relative terms, and he draws our attention to others who have seen the world somewhat similarly, such as Albert Einstein and Oliver Wendell Holmes. The author's stated "other view" is that "Rational Analysis" is the most (dare I say it?) rational way to approach investing. Rational Analysis, in this context, is the blending of fundamental analysis - balance sheets, product lines and such for stocks or carry-over stocks and acres planted for grains, for instance - with technical analysis. Mr. Bollinger has promised us another book dealing with Rational Analysis, and in this book he focuses entirely on the technical side.
5-0 out of 5 stars Measuring Volatility
It is interesting how things all of a sudden things come together in a Martin Gardner ah-hah! sort of moment.(I wish I had those more often).Anyway, I was developing a trading strategy and was being stymied with coming up with a method for filtering side-ways movements from trending movements. It suddenly dawned on me that this is what volatility is all about.I've been reading much on options and how volatility is an integral part of option trading. There was just so much to assimilate in analyzing options that the simple truth escaped me.High volatility begats low volatility and low volatility begats high volatility. (Among other things)Low volatility leading to high volatility forms the basis for Bollinger's Squeeze Play, otherwise known as the Volatility Breakout Trade. The Squeeze Play is one of three methods Bollinger has cooked up to show the benefits of Bollinger Band utilization.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good bk about BB, but nothing extra wrt other TA books
It's nearly impossible for any technical analyst to neglect BB with its assessibility, and it's so logical to learn the tool or expect to get the most of it from the inventor himself. With regard to this book, the good things are: The author did not promote his tool as something invincible. He talked about the limitations of and warned readers of the need for continuous revision. Very smooth writing and an easy read. The bad things are: BB is not really a sophisticated tool at all. So the author had "filled" it up with some stuff that seemed light or marginally helpful to readers who had read over five trading books. I am afraid that comprises of most of the potential buyers coz I think it's hard for novices to spend over thirty bucks for a book that talks only of one single TA tool. Furthermore, I really cant acquire extra knowledge of BB from this book that distinguishes it from other TA books I read before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warwick is a skillful writer
Warwick's writing style is extremely straightforward and clear. It was a pleasure to learn these tips on writing equally straightforward solicitation letters. What differentiates this book from other ones is that it is up-to-date and remains relevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Non-Profit Should Have This Book
Fundraising is a very specialized area of copywriting and marketing. Unlike the more common direct mail letter wherein you are selling a product or service, fundraising often offers nothing more to the receipient than a chance to feel good about doing good.5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of its kind ...
There are many many books and courses on how to write a funding proposal but few out there on how to write and develop your organization's annual campaign. Fortunately Mal Warwick's is the only book you'll ever need. Thorough, loaded with examples, not only of solicitation letters but follow up and thank you letters as well -- if you're a development professional this is one book you must have on your shelf. Using Mal Warwick's books and website, along with a great deal of marketing reading, I successfully redesigned my organization's membership campaign - raising our overall donations by 33% the first year and an additional 25% the second year.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
This is a must-read book for anyone thinking about starting or expanding a business. Rather than simply another book about writing a business plan, Sutton makes the case early and often about why such a plan is needed - and it isn't always to raise money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful
This book points out a lot of things women might be aware of but don't really think about. It really changed my perspective and the whole office politic games.I bought this book are a couple of women friends in management and would recommend this to anyone in a supervisor position.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learn to play hardball--woman style
This review is a collaborative writing project completed by a ENGL/227 class at DeVry University in beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good guidance for Women
Working in a male-dominated company in a male-dominated field (sales) I had noticed some of the behaviors mentioned in this book. However, "Hardball" gave me insight into WHY I saw these behaviors and how to deal with them. The book is getting a little dated (the power suit/skirt is out, the power suit with slacks is the choice of women executives these days) but still very good information. You must keep in mind that not ALL men think this way - as with all generalizations you have to keep flexible and adapt to the situation. A must read for any woman who is mystified by the behaviors she sees around her and wants to move up in the corporate world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A LONG history with this title...
I have used this book frequently as a business consultant and teacher over the last 10 years. It is THE "How To" book on the subject. It goes very well with POLYPROC Policies and Procedures (also available on Amazon - search on Polyproc or Sarbanes Oxley).

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.Easy to read or use as a reference.
No dry reading about theory here.Ms. Campbell has created a very useful tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic worksheets
If you come in to our nonprofit management support organization and ask for a book on grant proposal writing, there are two we'll pull out right away: Grassroots Grants and Winning Grants Step by Step. We're often asked which to choose. Of all the books we see, these are the two we most often recommend, but they do have different approaches.3-0 out of 5 stars good, basic overview but don't use alone
I am a consultant, grantwriter, and trainer who specializes in technical assistance and training for HIV/AIDS services.I provide a copy of this workbook to participants in my grantwriting ("Bringing Home the Money!) workshops, because it's a good, basic overview of many of the different parts of the request for funding proposal.3-0 out of 5 stars Good for foundation grants, not so good for gov't grants
The information contained in this book primarily applies to non-governmental entities soliciting grants from non-profit foundations.Organizations like the NSF, NIH, etc., have fairly strict guidelines and don't permit the "excesses" encouraged in this book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Writing White Papers is the Definitive Guide to All Things White Paper
Any writer will benefit from reading this book, no matter what sector you're working in. For a freelancer this book will help you perhaps chart a new path of revenue and boost your writing skills at the same time. Every university business or MBA student should not leave campus without this book in hand.
5-0 out of 5 stars Writing White Papers: Michael Stelzner shows how to capture readers and keep them engaged
Writing White Papers is an excellent guide for anyone who would like to take advantage of delivering compelling Web content in the form of white papers. Beginners will learn the basics, but there is a ton of valuable information for people like me who have written a lot of white papers over the years.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference (but narrow) and could use editing!
Writing white papers is a "necessary evil" of the technical world. While there are few publications that extol the virtues of white papers, those that provide a "how to" are scarce. Hence, it is refreshing to see a book devoted to the mechanics of writing white papers.
