thin book, but jam-packed with value and wisdom!
I love books on risk management, especially when they differ from mainstream opinion of what is correct.And they are even better when they make total sense like this book does.
Basic Principles, Interesting and Brief
The ZURICH AXIOMS by Max Gunther is a book designed to teach the reader the philosophy of speculation.Essentially, to understand the importance of speculation and how to emotionally and psychologically handle speculation.
Bones, not a body
I gave this book 3 stars because I consider it bones for setting some important fundamentals regarding investment/risk taking. I would have given it 4 stars, except I believe that the price is too high. I certainly would not consider it a body of work that even began to touch on how to invest responsibly and minimize risk.There are other books that provide several of the tenets expressed here but coupled with strategies to help you be a better investor. ... Oversimplified, and inaccurate
I bought this book because of the intriguing title.I was very disappointed upon reading it, and would suggest it should be retitled, The unintelligent asset allocator.I would not use the material in this book to build a portfolio for any of my clients.

An excellent, even though technical at times, book on applying modern portfolio theory
The real strength of this book is in translating modern financial theories (efficient markets and portfolio diversification) into practical recommendations for the average investor.
Basic statistics mistakes abound, a lot in the book is based on errorneous calculations
I can't tell if this book is good guide for investing or not, but it lacks in a very important respect - mathematical credibility. Some of very basic statistics examples are just plain wrong, and with major consequences.

A tried-and-true money making compendium
If you liked Chicken Soup for the Soul, you'll love this book, and some of its tips may even help you make some extra money and maximize the money you have. It is an unusual collaboration between Mark Victor Hansen, Chicken Soup's co-author, and Robert G. Allen, author of several books on getting rich in real estate. The book is half novel (on the right-hand pages) and half collection of self-help and investing advice (on the left-hand pages). Both the motivational fiction and the guidance are clear, though often familiar and a bit simplistic. The self-help and money-making tips evolve from standard get-rich books, spiritual manuals, real estate investment guides, management literature and pop psychology, but they are well-compiled and linked with supportive commentary. The most compelling tips involve giving, not getting, which is a nice twist. The book has a little of everything, from poetry to great quotations, so it resembles a deluxe pizza with many scattered toppings more than a nourishing bowl of mom's chicken soup. We say dig in, if that's your dish.

Don't waste your money
Their books seem to focus on making money in real estate. Why don't they come out and say so. How many people do you know that have boought a house with no moeny down? This book is not reality but it sure is making them rich.

Quickly settles disputes, answers questions, a "MUST" for all home care nurses & their management teams !!!!
I have the 4th edition (at this time is the most recent edition in print) and as a psych home care nurse, this little, portable wealth of knowledge has helped me validate to management, as well as to public health and other surveyors, the range in situations that qualify "homebound status" for psychiatric patients.Throughout the book there are samples provided to support a variety of situations that help the nurse better understand, and therefore more accurately report, on each sector of the OASIS forms.Medicare regulations are explained in detail, and I learned information that I had not known in the 14 years I have been doing mental health home care nursing.The manual provides a history and background of homecare, its evolution, provides an overview of documentaion, including the importance of coding, and its significance in home care.Also, valuable tips on improving the nursing visit, setting achievable goals, managing the case, and the guidelines for care for all the home care disciplines, are provided, so the nurse can be knowledgable regarding the roles of the other disciplines.There is a great resource section at the end of the book, and home care definitions, roles, and abbreviations are delineated in this manual as well.All home care codes are listed.

A Practitioner's Guide
Though I strongly dislike how this book preaches to you and tries to convince you that the only way to make money is by being a value investor (which is simply not true, though value investing is a very useful strategy), I believe the text does a brilliant job of covering the nuts and bolts of long-term value investing. More importantly, Pat Dorsey is a good writer, who uses clear and concise language, which makes it a lot more enjoyable to read if you are a practitioner. The book also does a brilliant job of covering specific industries, and it is this part of the book that sets it apart from other value books, which only touch on the broad macro-economic aspect of the market.

Good Summary
I believe this book will provide any investor with a good foundation for successful investing.

Investors Seeking Liberation Need Apply
This book is best suited to those that have some understanding of stock investing, and are wanting take greater control over managing their portfolio.Unlike so many "how toos" on stock investing, Morningstar's Guide starts with a basic explanation of understanding financial statements (something that too many investors simply ignore), and building upon those basics then introduces the reader to how to value the stocks market value relative to "real" value.Finally, the Guide ends with an almost 100-page analysis of the pertinent characteristics of stocks in major industry groups (eg, energy; healthcare).

Strong message, poor editing
This book is the equivalent of shouting "FIRE!" in a crowded theater.However, in this case, there really is a fire.
Financial Crisis
I never thought I would say this about a book that deals with finances but I thoroughly enjoyed the read. Written with wit and wisdom it makes good sense of a subject that it more usually shrouded in language that only has a vague resemblance to English.
Relative to what?
The writing was eloquent with a entertaining mix of sarcasim. The history lessons were appreciated.Most readers that chose to purchase this book know that the overuse of debt by the US is a long term problem/concern for the world.Buying gold to address these concerns is not constructive nor sensitve to the dynamics of world economics.I read this recommendation in 1980 by other sensational writers and would have endured miserable inflation adjusted performance if I had bought gold.Even at $1000/oz.in 2006, I would not have realized the performance of the S&P or the Euro equivalent.

A Book Worth Saving For
I first read this book in 1993. (I was out jogging one day and overheard two people discussing how it had changed their lives.I immediately bought it.) I especially like how it helps you to develop a healthy disregard for unsecured debt. Too often, we buy things on credit because we believe that we can't wait until we have the money. This book will help you to develop the proper mindset toward debt. With that essential foundation, you then address the problem of your specific debt. I especially appreciated his frequent reminder that you're not a bad person just because you owe money. I've recommended the book many times through the years.

My Debt Bible!
I bought this book at least 10 years ago, when I was a single mom and deeply in debt. It completely changed the way I thought about debt and financial freedom. I titled it my Debt Bible because 10 years later, I still refer to it when I need a reminder or some inspiration. It's not about deprivation, it's about living a good life without having to go into debt. This book is awesome. I've recommended it to all my friends.

A good book for the designer of energy risk managment tools
If you develop computer code in this field it could be a help, but if you are more interested in knowing more about the ways to avoid risk in the energy business I would recommend another book. There are also not enough practical examples to give a good understanding of the principles.
Not for the average industry professional
The authors have written a very detailed, well structured text on the different models and developments in the power and fuel markets.It's a very complex, mathematical analysis of the different techniques being used, and the text may lose a number of readers in the overly rigorous formulations.For those involved in risk management, market modeling, or asset management, the book would be a good secondary or tertiary read after you've established a sound understanding of stochastic models and current hedging and pricing techniques in the marketplace.For the layman in the industry, the book will be far too heavy and not worth the read.

Good overview
The management of risk in the context of energy or weather is quite different than in other contexts, due to the peculiarities of the data that occurs in energy prices. The high volatility of energy prices can range, as the authors of this book point out, between 50-100% for gas, to 100-500% for electricity. No doubt this kind of volatility, and other properties such as correlations and mean reversion, entails that some different mathematical strategies for modeling energy derivatives be devised. The authors give a good tour of some of these strategies, and anyone interested in energy derivatives will gain a lot of insight into their modeling when reading this book. Important for anyone negotiating a commercial lease
Very good book.Helpful insight into the various issues surrounding commercial leases, and helps put together the pieces of the puzzle.It has been a real asset in the last two leases I have negotiated.

Excellent and nuanced discussion of leasing issues
I negotiate retail and office leases as part of my law practice. This book is an excellent guide to the points that need to be considered when negotiating a lease. It will help attorneys as well as business people and brokers. The author does a good job in explaining, often in detail, the business reasons behind the different positions that the landlord and the tenant take. Understanding those reasons puts you in a much better position to create satisfactory compromises. Also, this book doesn't just address the major points - I was surprised to see how many subtle points the author addressed. Overall, an excellent book and a great value at this price.

Reasonably Useful
I'll agree that this book is a little random, but I've made it through the whole thing over numerous train commutes and found it useful in discussing how certain specific lease provisions can translate into a variety of outcomes in the real world of LL/tenant relations.

Now I can sleep at night?
I have always had problems anticipating economic change -- predicting it, and getting ready for it -- from 1965, when I took the final exam in macroeconomics and the question was something like "Here is the current economic situation, now what do you do?" until 2002, when the internet bubble burst and I found myself seriously over-invested in high tech stocks.With America's Bubble Economy,I know what the bubbles are, when they will burst, and how to position myself for them.Thank you to the authors -- now I can sleep at night!
quick, interesting read
It's a quick read -- big type, cartoons and relatively simple concepts cut it down to one or two evenings -- and not too brain-bending ones at that. The authors feel quite confident about their points, and present them swiftly, without delving deeply into statistics or high-level economics (most points take a common-sense, "when x people do y with z, z goes up or down" approach...often with heavily simplified charts and graphs to illustrate).

An Excellent Consumer Resource
This book does a great job of covering several areas of debt that all consumers will find helpful.It is written in an easy to understand language, yet rich with detail and a variety areas covered.The chapter on debt collections touched on the topic of statute of limitations, which is very important to many consumers, including me.I found that two other books that I read on consumer debt did not deal at all with this important topic.I thank Garrett Sutton (and contributor Gerri Detweiler) for a very valuable book.

Your First Year in Real Estate
The book is overly simplistic and aasumes the reader has absolutly no common sense.I see little useful information here. The book lacks the detail anyone would be looking for entering into the resl estate business.

I am really perplexed by the reviews that where negative on this book. I found it to inspirational, education, well written with quality content. Delivered in an easy to read upbeat fashion. I think the chapters on sales skills, selecting the right company and finding a mentor are right on target.

Real Estate Advertising Made Easy
This books give excellent recommendations which adhere to legal guidelines setforth by most states.Adding the right words to print advertising is very important to catch the eye of potential buyers.

Solid advice from a true believer
I carefully read the first edition of the book approximately 7 years ago.Though I didn't perceive at the time that I had a need for "invisibility", I adopted several of the recommendations in the book simply because they made me feel more comfortable.I was subsequently harrassed by a disgruntled former employee.At least one overt act of his was thwarted by my privacy measures.How many others, I'll never know.Every bit of energy and money I'd invested in my privacy was paid back and then some.
Excellent book on Privacy Techniques!
This is an excellent book on privacy techniques.What I like about it is that JJ Luna discusses various levels of privacy, and I have found that the more privacy you want, the more time/effort you will have to go through to maintain it.He talks about how to go about receiving your mail, where to choose to live, how use the phone, how to pay people, and how to title assets more privately.I like this book because JJ Luna does not try to force a one size fits all agenda upon people, but lets the reader decide on what level of privacy is right for them. There are varying levels of privacy which can be obtained for each one, depending on your circumstances (e.g. family, job, etc).Of course, the more privacy you want, the more you will have to sacrifice, but most of these techniques are simple and won't take too much extra time out of your week.

A good reference
A good reference book for anyone connected with a pension or profit sharing arrangement.It is not a guide to IRAs, Keogh plans, SEPs, rather it focuses on traditional defined contribution and defined benefit plans.While this book seems written for more for budding actuaries, those wishing to study design alternatives or asset management will find this book provides a good background.I find two flaws with the book. Very complete yet sometimes boring: serious stuff !
Very coplete study, covering almost all imaginable subjects, from actuarial maths to investment management to organisation and HR aspects of pension provision.This is not a manual, though. Get a simpler and less in detail book to get a general view of the topic, and then use "Fundamentals..." as reference. ... Read more

A terrific book, especially for rehabbers
I found this book very helpful.It was apparent early on that Kevin actually does this (yes, many real estate writers are not real estate investors).The detail that he goes into for rehab checklists and cost per items is very helpful.
I am now in the green despite my ex!
I was left with not much money after my divorce. While cleaning the books shelfs out I found Mr Myers book (My ex had bought it!)

Great for someone in business or already in business
Found that this book covered all the bases of writting a great business plan.As some one who has taken a couple of business courses, this was one of the best sources of information on writting a business plan.
Spectacular book
Wonderfully helpful book. I love this series and can't wait to read them all. While writing my business plan, this book as been by my side, every second, for reference. I don't know what I would have done without it!

This is a must-read book for anyone thinking about starting or expanding a business. Rather than simply another book about writing a business plan, Sutton makes the case early and often about why such a plan is needed - and it isn't always to raise money.

I'm slow but it's finally starting to sink in.
I read (books), listened(CDs) and watched(DVD)through the actual program of FPU and didn't follow any of it. I listened carefully but all my bad habits were ingrained inside my behavior. It did cause me to watch my spending habits a lot more carefully and that in-itelf has made me a believer. I was never in debt but I knew that if I didn't change my ways I'd soon be in financial trouble.
For rich and poor
Whether you are rich or poor, you have to read this and apply it to your life. After reading this book, you will have a different outlook on every penny in your pocket. The book is so easy to understand and the "Grandma style" of saving money still works today no matter how much money you make! I recommend this book for everyone!

Personal Finances 101
I have read many personal finance books over the years - mostly because my brother is a CPA and I was perpetually broke (oh, the irony). This book came recommended by a good friend.
