5-0 out of 5 stars VERY HANDS ON AND INFORMATIVE
If you can get past the format of the book, which is a fictional tale of a retiired professor teaching a Floridacommunity about option investing, and apprecite the actual easy to apply formulas he gives you, then this is a must read.
4-0 out of 5 stars Conservative option
A good read..the story-line is cute if you dont take it too seriously...Its like reading a novel from a mathematician...it had some very good conservative ways of investing...very good for a novice/intermediate investor with options...

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money

1-0 out of 5 stars Repackaged Garbage
The information in this book is nothing new.Nothing you couldn't get from "How to buy a Home for Dummies" (I made the title up).I was bored.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for first time buyers
My wife and I got this book at the Wells Fargo event.True that Bach is now taking money from them and that probably biases things a bit, but generally speaking we found this book to be tremendously helpful in explaining the home buying process. It explains in easy to understand terms the steps needed and the options available. It does mention options that won't be right for everyone, but I thought it also touched on the down sides of these options as well.Overall this book answered a lot of our questions and we are now happy homeowners in part because of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can build your wealth just by buying and living in a home every five years

3-0 out of 5 stars good points but overly simplistic
Dolf brings good points about property
2-0 out of 5 stars It felt good the first time --and still good for the firstimer
There is nothing detailed or even intellectually satisfying in this book. But I think the one thing that it does do is, (as another reviewer put it,) is to cheerlead. This book was exciting as it was the first book that I had ready on the subject. But now that I have done numerous transactions in real estate and handled millions of dollars worth of real estate and having experienced the ups and downs, DON"T DO REAL ESTATE AFTER READING THIS BOOK!!!!!!!! This book is so simplistic one does not know where to begin. For instance, Mr. Dolf, doesn't delve into possible set-backs seriously enough. He assumes that as long as you buy in a densely populated area, it is a safe bet. And he gives an example of "California" as one such place. There are many contingencies too numerous to list that destroys such a simplistic theory. Markets do have their time and in real estate, if you are stuck in a loan and a property you can't move, you are illiquid and repositioning is not as easy as it might seem. Therefore, being incapable of averting financial ruin is mmore difficult.

5-0 out of 5 stars best investment book ever
very helpful explaining "news" being by definition unpredictable and a problem for the short-term investor.

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date....You can do better
The problem with the EMH guys is that have never run there own money! They have a "belief system" that gives them comfort...it's ok to accept average performance.I will agree that large mutual funds are fighting an uphill battle and that most "common folk" aren't interested or even psychologically able to run their own money. There are however individuals that are looking at the right set of factors and they follow their own advice rather than their brokers. The individual investor has an incredible advantage over the mutual fund.I have personally averagedaround 33% for the last 18 years. There are clearly factors to screen for that put the odds in your favor when selecting stocks.I won't get into exactly what factors I use but I'll say I'm in the Greenblatt, Lynch camp as opposed to the O'neil GAP types. The individual has the ability to be rational when others are not.Countless individuals are beating the market year after year. There are and always will be inefficienies in the market.Smaller companies that aren't well followed and thinly traded give the individual unbelievable opportunities.I would highly recommend both of Joel Greenblatts books, and any books on behavioral finance(Richard Thaler, Hersh Shefrin and many others).I suppose that the "average person" would be better off in an index fund but it is incredibly offensive to suggest that people can't beat the market over a long period....they are doing it all the time. The AAII guys(shadow stock) have done 20% for the last 10 years.Motley Fool has done well. There are different approaches, some resulting in higher turnover than others.I tend to side with the small value camp(I'm really more GARP'y), but I know growth guys that compound at high rates year after year.... it is very doable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely random, but unobvious blockage
There is some valuable information on how to invest your money wisely, and gives you a few options whether you are conservative, moderate, or a risk-taker.Basically the book suggests not to go extreme with risk taking unless you really like doing it and have extra money to possibly blow off or hit really big.The big key is patience, and it explains why eventually. What was prickly about this book was how especially at the beginning, it tells stories of how it was "so obvious" that certain stocks would plummet and how ideas just didn't make sense.I don't think anything is so obvious as he makes it seem such as stock for a movie internet database not working out because casting directors would not want more candidates to choose from than they already do.The reasoning is too simplified. For instance, maybe the website gave details and what actors have done in the past etc.The idea is just like imdb (Internet Movie Database), except that imdb is still going and I do not think it's based on stocks, but rather advertising, subscribers, and to a point, viewers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Common Sense to Common Practice
The Remax story is about applying everyday common sense to serving customers - the nice thing about it is that you could apply the principals espoused in this wonderful story of opportunity, growth and success for a host of regular folks to a range of retail business models and create your own success story. This book reminds us that we can all participate in serving customers and make a good living from doing it - nice easy read - well done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Up, Up, and Away!
Phenomenal book on the rise of the RE/MAX philosophy. It details the efforts needed to establish a new real estate business model that flew in the face of an immobile, bedrocked industry. I especially enjoyed the emphasis placed on the early years and what the founders went through to ultimately succeed--a struggle in which success, failure, and near death all played their hands. This is an emotional roller coaster for the tight-knit community of brokers who first embraced the RE/MAX brand and strove to build it into one of the largest and most recognizable real estate brokerages in the world.Great story about the determination to build a business.4 Stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
The title of this 30-year history of the RE/MAX real estate firm is founder Dave Liniger's corporate philosophy: "Everybody wins." Liniger is a maverick, so even this authorized history is exciting and instructive. Authors Phil Harkins and Keith Hollihan assert that RE/MAX, "never experienced a month of negative growth," although they include sagas of near bankruptcies and other crises. The book focuses on absorbing storytelling, not statistics or metrics. It is organized mostly by theme, which blurs the chronology. The authors spin or dismiss any Liniger missteps, such as his "nave" failure to keep up with payroll taxes. They praise him as bold and risk-taking, including the quixotic year he devoted to trying to fly a hot air balloon - the RE/MAX symbol - into the stratosphere. The book is readable, although sometimes a bit sweet and simple. And, the authors love clichs ("He put his head down and threw himself into the job" - ouch). Nevertheless, we cheerfully recommend this peppy saga. Managers will find it refreshing and instructive to read about people who attribute their success to loyalty, collegiality, hands-on leadership, and the ability to work and play hard, from each agent's office to the golf course and the boardroom. ... When describing a favorite room in the house, do you find yourself using terms such as "expansive," "formal," and "spacious"--a marble foyer or a formal dining room perhaps? Or do the words "cozy," "intimate," and "warm" come to mind--a cheery little breakfast nook or a window seat complete with plenty of pillows and a breathtaking view? More than likely, you--like thousands of other homeowners--are drawn to the more personal spaces in your home, where comfort, beauty, and efficiency meet. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality over quantity
This book is a great resource for anyone wanting a home that places quality over size. There are numerous tips on how to make smaller spaces work smarter and for adding quality touches in simple yet elegant ways as well as hundreds of inspiring photos. In our effort to design a reasonably-sized log home that truly reflects and enhances our lifestyle, this book has given us many ideas for making small spaces work. In the age of 3000+ sq. ft. homes, it is refreshing to see a return to the principles of the Arts & Crafts movement. In fact, you will notice many of the houses pictured have many Arts & Crafts influences. That made the book all the more relevant to us as we plan to incorporate some of those elements in our design.

Very good read. Author is a very informative real estate investor and shares his experiences throughout the book. Well worth the money and a must to keep in your personal library
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on the qualitative aspects of real estate investing.
John Schaub has written an excellent book on the qualitative aspects of real estate investing. It doesn't deal much with the important mathematical aspects of estimating your projected return on investment. Instead, it deals with what types of real estate investments provide the best return with the least amount of work, what type of investing strategy to use, and how to find good deals. He advocates a long-term buy-and-hold approach instead of short-term flipping.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read for anyone wanting to/ already investing in real estate!
I bought this book about a year ago, after having purchased my first home.Since then, I have purchased a second home, and discovered what it means to be a landlord. This book inspired me to become a landlord, and has helped me through the process, tremendously.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a call to action
This is a great call to action for those of us that have analysis paralysis. You will either take action or throw this book across the room.I recently returned from a Robert Allen Enlightened Wealth Retreat where I met several, and I mean more than a few dozen ordinary people that took action. One couple amassed over a million dollars in just 90 days. One couple has made 10 million in Real Estate in the past 3 years. Many folks made over $100k in a few months enough to quit the J.O.B. So this is real stuff my friends, I witnessed it myself.

This one is much more practical than Rich Dad Poor Dad, which is more of an inspirational book whereas this one is more step by step to get you going.

When Suze Orman was 13 she watched her father dive into the flames of his burning take-out chicken shack in order to rescue his cash register. In that moment Orman learned that money was more important than life itself. And so it became her quest to be rich. But years later, when Orman became a wealthy broker with a huge investment firm, she was profoundly unhappy. What went wrong? She had not yet achieved financial freedom. In her nine-step program, Orman covers the ingredients to financial success--confronting our beliefs and fears, learning the nuts and bolts (and insiders secrets!) of savvy management, and finding the spiritual trust that leads to abundance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars [billionaire] Oprah Winfrey's favorite money guru - 'nuff said!
i've given MANY of these away because...
3-0 out of 5 stars Advice is not revolutionary but good definitions
It turns out I had taken most of the steps Suze outlines in this book several years ago so I can't say I found out anything earth shaking.
3-0 out of 5 stars Overrated
Suze gives some good advice, especially to set up a will and revocable trust to help protect your family members, etc. But, it is a little too emotional and overdone."If you would just save that $2 a week you spend on whatever, you would have X amount of money on 20 years" over and over is a bit ridiculous.I really disagree with her dislike of professional money managers (I am not one) and the "follow your heart" approach. Most people who manage their own investments do not do as well as they would with a professional. In fact, many fail miserably. If you need medical advice, ask a doctor, if you need your kitchen redone, hire a contractor, and if you need advice on how to invest your money, given your situation and goals, ask a financial planner for help. Many people are in crummy dog stocks and worthless no-load mutual funds because they "followed their heart" and chased last years winners. Not a bad audio book, but my copy was really outdated (1997)--almost 10 years old.Buy something less emotional and more recent. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Reference Book for Small/Home Based Business Owners
It is rare to find a great tax book like this - easy to read, understand and implement, with all authorities referenced. The information in this book is literally worth a ton if taken to heart and implemented - especially for small and home based business owners. A dollar saved by reducing taxes is worth much more of income generated. Pay the price of learning and implementing the concepts laid out in this book - I am confident you will be glad you did. Highly Recommended.

This is a very good book on the subject of finding the type of people to work for you. What it fails to do is to point out the specialty people required to get a business running and growing. That is what I expected, after reading the title. One thing that totally put me off as I read this book. The author spoke of owning a shipping business and having a time pressure to get a shipment loaded. All of the laborers pulled together as a team, working long hours and extra shifts without complaining or asking for overtime pay.Who made the lions share of the money? Not the ones who did the hard labor, but he as the owner.Compensation was something not mentioned in this book.I very much like the concept of a 'code of honor', in which this book was almost completely based.I am still not really sure, after reading this book, what the difference between a code of honor and a mission statement is.A couple of great books that also cover this concept very well are: On My Honor I Will, and The Lost Secret of Phenomenol Success. This kind of book makes you think about your values, and what you want from life.I recommend it.Just remember, it may not be what you expect.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!
I am an entrepreneur and wanted some inspiration, sadly I just found a lot of crap in this book. There's nothing I can apply, anyone can come up with a book better than this. just by reading the index you know this book was written by someone who has no idea about business. I'll write it for you:

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of paper
This book is a total waste of time.Stick to books by Pring, Murphy and Elder...
5-0 out of 5 stars Why and how to design a successful trading system
Thousands, if not millions, of people waste huge amounts of money and time every year searching for some get-rich-quick Holy Grail of trading.Tharp's somewhat misleadingly titled Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom is definitely not a get-rich-quick technique.Nor is it even a guide to analyzing the markets; there are no fundamental analysis approaches, no technical chart patterns, no quantitative formulae.Instead, Tharp offers something totally different and far more useful: he systematically describes why you should develop your own trading system and how you should go about building and testing it.

My adult children have encouraged me to have a place where all important papers and facts can be at hand if I become incapacitated. This book does just that, and more.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Book
I found great relief when we heard about this book. It was so needed in my home. This is a super workbook for everyone who loves someone and wants to makes their grief process easier! It is designed to give your loved ones a clear idea of your wishes and how your affairs should be handled. The authors handle this process in a clear and precise manner. As Dr. Laura said when recommending this workbook, 'it doesn't mean you'll die sooner' Give yourself and your loved ones peace of mind! I have been through a messy estate and that is no fun. Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mom loved the gift
Recently I bought this book for my mother as a gift thinking she could use it to get her papers and financial information under control before "something happens to (her)".I didnt know if she needed it, or would even want it, but got it anyway.I mailed it to her in Florida (which was hit by hurricanes last year) and she just received it.Her email to me said, "I had an appt with my financial advisor to go over something like this, but now I am going to cancel the appt. This book is EXACTLY what I am looking for." She even said that she was going to show it to her friends as they might be interested in the book as well! ... Read more

Editorial Review

With the stock market breaking records almost daily, leaving longtime market analysts shaking their heads and revising their forecasts, a study of the concept of risk seems quite timely. Peter Bernstein has written a comprehensive history of man's efforts to understand risk and probability, beginning with early gamblers in ancient Greece, continuing through the 17th-century French mathematicians Pascal and Fermat and up to modern chaos theory. Along the way he demonstrates that understanding risk underlies everything from game theory to bridge-building to winemaking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ingenious ways to measure probability
"Against the Gods; The remarkable story of risk," is a world-class history of ingenious ways to measure probability.Author Peter L. Bernstein approaches the subject of risk/uncertainty with patience and unfolds a stirring tale of how civilization dicovered ways to improve the understanding of probability.
3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
It has interesting parts. Good for those looking for a recreational reading rather than a good manual for beginners. On this count, I recommend Barboianu's "Understanding and Calculating the Odds".

4-0 out of 5 stars A good non-mathematical introduction to economic risk
For people who are interested in the economic side of risk (mainly stock), rather than the probabilities and risks of every day things.

3-0 out of 5 stars CSR is the key
I wish the author would of talked a little more about the "system" of an agency and not just "hire a CSR" as the key.He was very postivie in his words but not as informative to commission splits and hiring new "sales people" for the agency.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
Very easy to follow - excellent information! Is used as a training book for some agencies.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This is a terrible manual. I hope it stays out of print. Poorly-written, unedited, slapped together, it is a mishmosh of outdated, compiled, swiped material that will be of no use to anyone looking to learn about residential mortgage loan origination. There are a lot of good manuals out there, and this sure ain't one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I wish I had this book 25 years ago when I first got in the business. Instead, I got it for my daughter when she joined my company. She picked up the concepts and jargon within a week! I now keep this book in the office and it is required reading for all new loan officers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Help
This manual was a great help in helping me understand the mortgage business. After my divorce I was left with little money and no prospects. So I turned to the mortgage business. After months of being in over my head, I found this book and things have never been the same. By learning actually how to properly take a loan and how it gets processed I was able to answer my customer's questions that before I had to get the answer from someone else. My confidence shot up through the roof and so did my income.
