4-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start reading about leadership
Leadership books remind me of cooking, there are a finite number of common ingredients that make up the majority of dishes, but there seems to be an infinite number of ways to combine and present these ingredients.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not so innovative
Maxwell's concepts of what a leader is is quite accurate. However, I don't think he needed to spend over 200 pages to define what a leader is.That's what this book came to be: one long, repetitive, obvious definition for leadership.I didn't see these as laws so much as nuances of what he'd already said.
5-0 out of 5 stars Begin Here
If you've never read anything by John Maxwell, then you should. And this is the best place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent one-stop resource
There's a reason this book is a standard in the field. It explains both fact and theory, in just enough depth, to support HR generalist efforts. The current edition -- for those of us who haven't seen the inside of a school for quite a few years -- features on-line resources that are particularly useful in work situations.Call it a textbook for OJT.

Easy to read, at least more so than accounting. If you can afford it, buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unneccessarily Long
This textbook takes microeconomics which can be explained in a technical, exact manner and makes it abstract and foreign.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for intermediate level students
Organization of the books is good. Topics are discussed with enough clarity and each topic comes with lots of graphs and illustrations (which I think are a great help at that level). The level of algebra and math is at an intermediate undergraduate level (economics major). I think it is a complete book for anybody who wants to have an understanding of microeconomics. I am a Ph.D. student of economics now and if I am going to teach an undergrad micro course, I will certainly choose this textbook. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative business guide to strategy
I bought this book for a college class and kept it. While it is not the most exciting book, the case studies are an excellent guide to a wide range of business plans and strategies. The cases are divided into four categories: single business companies, diversified companies, implementing and executing strategy and ethics & social responsibility. The cases are very complete and interesting. The downside is the shelf life of the book - I would expect a new edition before long.

2-0 out of 5 stars Student Review
I am a student majoring in Business Administration who recently used this text in an upper-level management course. The book's writing is utterly superfluous.Boredom was frequently my sentiment as I weeded through unnecessarily labyrinthine sentences. The ideas in the book were occasionally interesting, but were usually ideas I had already developed on my own via simple intuition.Perhaps the most valuable part of the text is the section of case studies. This closing segment of the book contains many great ideas for student projects.Overall, this text disappoints me as a student

Editorial Review

Buffett, the Bard of Omaha, is a genuine American folk hero, if folk heroes are allowed to build fortunes worth upward of $15 billion. He's great at homespun metaphor, but behind those catchy phrases is a reservoir of financial acumen that's generally considered the best of his generation. For example, in an essay on CEO stock options, he writes, "Negotiating with one's self seldom produces a barroom brawl." This is his way of saying that an executive who can give himself compensation totally disproportionate to his performance surely will. There are uncountable gems of financial wisdom to be harvested from these essays, taken from the annual reports he writes for Berkshire Hathaway, his holding company. Just to pick one more, here's a now-famous line about those he competes with when making stock-market investments: "What could be more advantageous in an intellectual contest--whether it be chess, bridge, or stock selection--than to have opponents who have been taught that thinking is a waste of energy?"Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Release Your Inner Maverick
Bill Taylor and Polly LaBarre, co-authors of Mavericks at Work have captured a picture of the cutting edge of business innovation. Where most business books celebrate these out-sized celebrity figures, Mavericks captures the ideas that inspired people to create really unique and successful businesses.I think every business leader and manager should read the book with their teams. You should spend a half hour a week discussing the stories you find here. The reason is that each one of these people were where you are at one time. They took some idea that mattered to them and built their businesses on them. This is something we can all do.Can you do it?Yes. And these Mavericks prove it.It's time to release our inner Maverick don't you think? ... Read more

Editorial Review

Climbing Mount Everest: dangerous. Hitchhiking in Colombia: very dangerous. Leading through change: perilous. Perilous but possible, say Heifetz and Linsky in their encouragingly practical guide to putting yourself on the line and negotiating the hazards of leadership. As the authors acknowledge, many leadership books are "all about inspiration, but downplay the perspiration." This one doesn't. Leadership is always a risky business, but those risks can be understood and reduced. Effective leadership comes from doing more than the technical work of routine management; it involves adaptive work on the part of the leader, and a willingness to confront and disturb people, promote their resourcefulness, and engage their ability to adjust to new realities. But adaptive change always encounters resistance. Heifetz and Linsky examine four forms of resistance--marginalization, diversion, attack, and seduction--before presenting a number of practical resistance-response skills to nurture and employ. Some are fairly obvious (like developing and maintaining perspective, and holding steady in the midst of change), and others more complex (like thinking politically when dealing with friends, foes, and fence sitters), but shimmering nuggets of insight and practical wisdom can be found in each. The dangers of leadership also spring from within, however, and the book's final section addresses ways to recognize and manage competing "hungers" and learn to distinguish one's roles from one's self. The authors' points are illustrated by the experiences of leaders from all walks of life, making this a useful and inspiring manual for anyone hoping to put themselves on the line and make a difference in the lives of others. 5-0 out of 5 stars If you're a leader . . . soak in this book
Let's face it: leadership is dangerous. As Heifetz and Linsky write in their introduction, "Each day brings you opportunities to raise important questions, speak to higher values, and surface unresolved conflicts. Every day you have the chance to make a difference in the lives of people around you. And every day you must decide whether to put your contribution out there, or keep it to yourself to avoid upsetting anyone, and get through another day. You are right to be cautious. Prudence is a virtue. You disturb people when you take unpopular initiatives in your community, put provocative new ideas on the table in your organization, question the gap between colleagues' values and behavior, or ask friends and relatives to face up to tough realities. You risk people's ire and make yourself vulnerable. Exercising leadership can get you into a lot of trouble."

By definition, the net promoter score is the percentage of respondents falling into the 9-10 range minus the percentage falling into the 0-6 range.Consequently, very different distributions of advocacy scores can yield the same net promoter score; for example, all of the response distributions shown below yield net promoter scores of 40.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book.. Very interesting
Good book. I think it is important that the author comments that the ultimate question could be different depending on the industry or product/service. Worth the read!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Easy Read With Great Content
I read the original Harvard Business Review article, and thought I understood the concept. However, reading the book was inspiring, and I applied the concepts to our business immediately. The NPS methodology is so simple, but so powerful. The original aim of the method is to evaluate customer satisfaction, but I also recently applied it to reference checking for a job candidate.By asking if the reference would recommend that their best friend go to work for this candidate, I was able to build a surprisingly helpful picture of the leadership qualities of the individual under consideration.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Text For MBA International Marketing Course
I don't understand how people could complain about this book being too complex, poorly-written, or poorly organized. Everything is presented clearly and logically, and the case studies are relevant and interesting. I found it simple to read, informative, enlightening, and actually fun for the most part. My only criticism is that the authors don't, in my opinion, give an entirely neutral treatment of some of the politically-charged issues raised in their book. It seemed as though they would sometimes more heavliy emphasize one point of view (their point of view, quite obviously) over others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as others are saying!
I purchased this book for an International Marketing course I had to take for my MBA Program. I have to disagree with what I have read about in other reviews - I found this book easy to read, and simple to understand. The examples used help clarify concepts and I felt the book was well organized. I especially liked the Country Notebook section in the back of the book. It was the perfect course-long project to apply the concepts and knowledge we learned about in class. I feel that this book is just about as good as an International Marketing MBA textbook can get!

3-0 out of 5 stars Knowledgeable authors-boring writing
I took an International Business class for my MBA. I read every chapter in this book. There was a lot of knowledge included but there is often too much wordy writing and the book drones on. The definitions need to be in the margins. The last chapters are more of a cross cultural study of doing business with Japanese. It was a boring read-but good before bedtime for those that do not fall asleep easily. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for all options traders
This book has it all with the strategies outlined in a very concise manner. Not only is every strategy listed with a nice synopsis of each one, an example of a trade is listed on every one. Also, every advantage and disadvantage of each strategy along with an exit strategy should the trade start to turn south. The nice thing about it, is it is so easy to look up a strategy you might want to try without having to comb through the entire book. And each one is listed by type of investor, aggressive, income, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
A no-nonsense, no-introductory-material reference library of option strategies. Cross-referenced by goal, risk tolerance, strategy type, name, and more. Herein one easily can find each strategy described with its theoretical outcomes, its benefits, and its drawbacks. Order entry and exit procedures and Greeks also accompany each strategy.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great book that teaches

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Insight
I've been on a leadership book kick lately, and this is one of my all-time favorites. It's short, easy to read, and is one of the best explanations of cognitive dissonance for the layman I've ever seen. It doesn't work for everybody though - some people are turned off by the "fable" format and simple writing style. I still find it very helpful, and it's the kind of book that can have a dramatic impact on some of its readers. It certainly does a good job of making the point that by focusing on our own behavior we can make any situation better.

2-0 out of 5 stars Do The Right Thing Because It Is The Right Thing: Long-winded, Short on Substance
"Moral Intelligence: Enhancing Business Performance and Leadership Success" by Doug Lennick has a simple premise. Once you get that premise, the rest is about internalizing it, and living it out when the moral challenge presents itself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
In business or financial circles, morality and ethics has frequently been thought of as weakness, as something that while noble will not assist in the generation of profits. Further, those who practice it can easily be taken advantage of by competitors. A business run by moral agents will not be able to survive the vicissitudes of the marketplace. It takes cunning and an instinct for the jugular, so the argument goes, to create and maintain a successful business.Another view is that a businessperson who claims to be moral or ethical is either posing as such in order to take advantage of someone or some situation. In this view, morality and ethics are then tools of manipulation and power, a view that is, ironically, not far from that of those political philosophers, such as Karl Marx, who criticize capitalism vociferously.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Concept, Treatment OK
Having read a number of books brought to us by Wharton Publishing, this one was a bit disappointing. Wharton has high standards for its business books, requiring them to be relevant, timely, empirically based, conceptually sound, and implementable in real decision settings. While this book does meet those criteria, I felt the concentration on the moral intelligence topic was diluted by what I perceived to be over-attention to emotional intelligence. I didn't feel the strength and focus I anticipated, particularly given my high expectations of Wharton books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for most people
So many people complain that they read leadership books and their is "nothing new" about them. Stop reading so many books and go lead! The basics of leadership don't drastically change. I've been teaching college classes on leadership for three years now and I've read dozens of books on leadership. The basic principles are often the same. It is a matter of finding someone whose examples and style make you relate to them and understand how to act them out.

This was my vacation read this year. I am not the kind of person who reads work related books, required or not, while on holiday. The book is well thought out, enjoyable to read, full of real life stories, thoughtful analysis and practical conclusions.
