4-0 out of 5 stars A decent introduction to what's going on with the world's money
I'm not an economist so I might be rating this book higher or lower than someone who knows this stuff, but for the lay person it was a pretty good read. One thing to note up front is that this is more of an academic book than the normal pop-econ books that most of us are used to seeing. The paragraphs are heavily cited and the reader is assumed to know at least a little about modern international finance (I had to spend some time on wikipedia more than a few times).
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
This book is a thoughtful, amply documented reflection on the future of currency. The dollar, euro and yen dominate the global monetary order, with the dollar now unrivaled at the top and unlikely to be threatened in the future. The countries that issue lesser currencies face a trade-off between monetary sovereignty and international acceptability (with all its economic advantages). Some economists say these lesser currencies should simply dollarize, that is, sacrifice their monetary sovereignty on the altar of international economic efficiency by adopting a stronger currency as their own. Author Benjamin J. Cohen argues that these countries are likely to reject dollarization because the emotional and political advantages of issuing one's own currency are simply too strong. He suggests various alternate mechanisms that allow countries to maintain some monetary independence and authority while gaining the advantages of a fully liquid, widely used currency. Non-specialists may find his extensive discussions a bit dry or sometimes tedious, but we applaud the author's ability to explore monetary economics in admirably lucid detail.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!
You can't really use it. Huge amount of typos, omissions and errors. Just try to compute rate of return using formula from the book ROR = [(Selling price-1)/Buying price]*100. Buying for 90 and selling for 100 gives you a zero return rate, nice, isn't it. Worst book I've ever had.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent title for self-training into a new job position
As a computer systems administrator, I usually support several applications without getting too involved in their inner workings nor with the business that they run. This book, however, allowed me to understandthe bond markets and to be able to interact with computer users withdefinite knowledge and sure understanding of the business. The book is across between a text book and a do-it-yourself with examples.I couldn'thave done it with out it. Next I'm ordering An introduction to Derivatives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Boom or Bust an indepth look at how the FX works.
About the time of the Gulf War, International Markets had been hoping the U.S financial house would put their house in order.International Markets wanted more investing, savings and growth; instead, U.S markets became heavy in consumer debt.Interest, taxes, and inflation were at high levels.Foreign investment began seized up large chunks of real estate hoping for inflation too drive up price and increase their U.S equities. The 80s housing boom would be curtailed by rising interest rates but maintain a stead climb for the next 25 years.Real Estate would seem invincible until maximum debt levels could not be exceeded.
3-0 out of 5 stars Dated and not ability oriented
I tend to overlook the age of books before purchasing them, and this is yet another one of those follies.Aside from that, this book is an interesting read, though more personalized and biographical.I would pick this book up if you want to maybe gleam some personal concepts and perceptions from an insider, but don't think it's going to help your trading or undestanding too much. There are much better books for that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but dated
Krieger, I'm going to guess, didn't really know for sure what kind of book he wanted to write so he kind of included a bit of everything, but gave us not enough of anything.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The "Asian Contagion" Reviewed.
A simple yet far reaching book about the "Asian Contagion" and currency crisis of the late '90's. You should first read "The Vandals Crown", then this book, followed by "The Chastening". You'll then have a complete and chronological history of numerous currency crises involving the IMF, World Bank, and the major geopolitical figures. Fascinating foundation of fundamentals in action for anyone interested in trading the FOREX markets. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive study of the international financial system
This book is excellent for challenging undergraduate courses as well as graduate courses in international finance. It has a unique mixture of theory, evidence and institutions. The theory is mainly delivered to you using a few equations and helpful diagrams. The "evidence" part accompanies each theoretical offering and usually takes the form of reporting the structure and results of empirical tests. As far as I know this is the only international finance text that gives so much insight into the econometrics of international finance. It is well known that MacDonald is an international expert in the econometrics of international finance, and the bibliography indicates that he has worked quite a lot with Hallwood investigating various propositions concerning the behaviour of pegged exchange rate regimes. One of the best features of the book is the way that the theory and evidence is used in the discussion of international institutions such as the operation of fixed and floating exchange rates, currency unions and development of the international financial architecture. There is also an extensive discussion of the main features of the history of international monetary systems. Finally the authors have made an effort to bring in some discussion of international finance in east Asia.Probably the book could have benefitted from more discussion of regional issues such as these.Even so there is quite a good theoretical discussion of dollarization in Latin America.

5-0 out of 5 stars A leading text has just been updated.
We have tried hard to keep abreast of the literature in all of the main fields of international finance - theory, evidence, institutions and policy. As we believe that scholarship requires the scholar to know the sources of ideas - every idea having its own author(s), we have not spared the student the bother of knowing about the researchers and the generation of ideas in international money and finance. We cover 'recieved wisdom' as well as the important new developments in the field. The latter include such diverse subjects as theoretical innovations in the general equilibrium theory of exchange rate determination, explanations for the relative immobility of long-term capital alongside highly mobile short-term capital, the behavior of exchange rates within target zones, theories of the best course of financial integration of transition economies and developing countries into the circuit of international capital, explanations for why real exchange rates often diverge for long periods from purchasing power parity, how misinformed speculation and speculative bubbles can cause floating exchange rates to be unstable, new successful empirical methods for forecasting exchange rates, and a reassessment of the performance of the gold standard in the 19th century and its role in the Great Depression. This textbook-monograph - written for smart undergraduate and gradute students, is widely used on three continents (the Chinese translation appeared in 1996).And we know that is it used for course work at Ivy League universities in the US, and many universities throughout Europe. ...
