5-0 out of 5 stars Points the way for years of progress
Most lean accouting books - in fact most books - present what they consider the solutions, the final answer.Real Numbers does present some answers, but more importantly, they provide the direction.By painting a picture of the ideal state that we should all be shooting for, they give us the guideposts to help us make progress and improvements day after day after day. This is much more powerful, because the progress that follows reading and applying this book can last for years. It is also more flexible because we can adopt what they are teaching to a wide variety of settings and companies.Furthermore, the authors have done it - they were there making it work.I think 10 years from now we will still be referring to this book as an important contribution to lean accounting and to accounting in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars Transforming the Bean Counter...
The book's presentation makes a case for accurate and timely information that is easily understood and actionable.Whereby it is now time to take the benefits learned from implementing lean manufacturing on the shop floor into the office and remove the blinders of old traditional accounting systems.Doing so transforms the accountant from bean counter to a valued partner in the business.5-0 out of 5 stars The authors provide some solid, invaluable advice
How can a manager gain a real picture of a company's performance? Real Numbers: Management Accounting In A Lean Organization helps managers understand management accounting practices, which often produce complex financial statements which have little to do with reality. Each of the authors is a CFO who probes management accounting systems and how simplicity and clarify can be restored to an organization's accounting system. The authors provide some solid, invaluable advice on tweaking accounting practices to get the most from facts and figures generated by accountants. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The sequel to The millionaire next door
If you read and enjoyed the Millionaire next door this book is a great follow up for more of how the real millionaires think. I is basically the same and the before mentioned book however in this book the author makes a successful attempt to get inside a millionaires head by studying their behavior.
1-0 out of 5 stars I Couldn'tWake Up
Having read "The Millionaire Next Door," as well as most if not all of the classics in this category, I expected life-altering experiences with this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars HOW MILLIONAIRES GOT THAT WAY - PRACTICAL AND INSIGHTFUL INSIDER-INFO
Productivity...attack, working in conjunction with frugality...defense - many coaches and success writers tend to focus more on the former tactics than the latter. Interesting to learn that you may earn lots of money - millions even - and be "Income-affluent", but still not be a champion player, as Dr. Thomas Stanley sees it. The real goal, he says, is to be "Balance sheet-affluent". Welcome to the real meaning of millionaire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for those who want to make money
Great book. Covers all the bases, including fundamental and technicals. I have read a few of the other Dummies books on investing and all were well written. This book is for those who want to make money, not just buy and hold and hope for the best. I learned more about trading/investing with the Dummies series than 4 years of college majoring in finance. And yes, I have made money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction
IMHO The reason the "for dummies" brand has been successfull aside from the catchy name, is the actual content and material of the books themselves.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book + Free trading
This book is especially good for the person who wants a broad overview of investing. It will give you a solid foundation to begin growing your money from. After reading, I opened a Scottrade account because they had the lowest rates ($7), and no inactivity fee. [...] to get a referral for 3 free trades. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY HANDS ON AND INFORMATIVE
If you can get past the format of the book, which is a fictional tale of a retiired professor teaching a Floridacommunity about option investing, and apprecite the actual easy to apply formulas he gives you, then this is a must read.
4-0 out of 5 stars Conservative option
A good read..the story-line is cute if you dont take it too seriously...Its like reading a novel from a mathematician...it had some very good conservative ways of investing...very good for a novice/intermediate investor with options...

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
Please don't buy this book based on the title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to read
I am an MBA student at USC looking to get into the I Banking field and this book has really been helpful. It has been consistent with the terms and concepts I've learned in school and through networking with people.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, easy to understand overview of the business...
This book is very well written and very easy to understand. It touches on most of the various aspects of the business without over-focusing or under-focusing on any particular area. A definate business school quality textbook, or an excellent reference source. Real life examples are given to further your hands-on understanding. I emailed the author, and my email was quickly responded to in a very friendly manner. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn the business of investment banking.

3-0 out of 5 stars good overview but expensive
This book is a good overview of the investment banking business, but it is quite expensive.I would strongly recommend instead or in addition the Vault Career Guide to Investment Banking....The Vault guide includes more detailed overviews of all the departments and functions of an investment bank including corporate finance, M&A, sales, trading, private client services, credit, etc.If you are a job seeker in investment banking also try the Vault Guide to Finance Interviews, which contains actual investment banking finance interview questions and answers and which I found to be enormously valuable in my Wall Street job search. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate for beginners
While I wasn't expecting much, from reading the mediocre reviews posted here, I was surprised to find fairly decent amount of valuable information in the book, albeit for a novice in the hedge fund world.
3-0 out of 5 stars Who's this book for?
I share the view that if you're searching for investing techniques you're really looking in the wrong place (and maybe you should learn to use the "search inside" feature on top of the page...); my point however is that I can't see who's this book targeted for: if you're an experienced professional looking to strike out on you're own you won't discover anything you didn't already know, if you're so naive that you'll be learning something new then, as another reviewer put it so well, you shouldn't be managing money in the first place.
1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?
I'm not sure what Stuart was attempting to do with this book, but certainly the title was misleading. I found the book to be largely useless and I'm surprised he has authored another book on the topic. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good read, more intellectual rigor perhaps
I thoroughly enjoyed the book.Almost 2 years before the fact, it was pretty predictive of what might happen to the housing bubble.Actually I am thinking about making career moves in the direction of Behavioral Finance/Economics so was happy to see a 'popular" book in this area. But this is also the problem, I am looking for more scholarly accounts too!

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost 5 stars; and a very enjoyable read.
A great read; appeals to the counter-intuitive insights of successful investors and explains a lot of human nature and how destructive it can be from an investment standpoint.
4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and Fun!
I found my time well spent reading this book. For would be readers - it seemed to me that there really were two parts to this book:

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for starting a software business
It is because I am an entrepreneur and a capitalist that I got into Forex trading. Therefore I must admire and respect those who achieve monumental success such as James Dicks. And I actually enjoy reading a book or e-book that is a good sales letter for another product. People who resent such things would do well to go through T.Harv Eker's Millionaire Mind training and other such wealth consciousness training. However, I think most people in the Forex world now realize that Forex Made Easy is a software that produces green arrows for a buy signal and red arrows for a sell signal. The programming behind the software, I am told, is based on a simple signal that is taught in at least a similar form in many introductory trading courses. Following the signal requires users to remain ignorant of all the other factors that could eliminate most of the losses. Many people who started out with Forex Made Easy have told me that they did not start learning to trade until they went on to other sources of training. I believe that Forex Made Easy may not have ever had their customer's best interest nor their success as a motivating factor when creating the company. They have made a huge amount of money with late night TV commercials and high pressure "free introductory seminars".

Editorial Review

When Suze Orman was 13 she watched her father dive into the flames of his burning take-out chicken shack in order to rescue his cash register. In that moment Orman learned that money was more important than life itself. And so it became her quest to be rich. But years later, when Orman became a wealthy broker with a huge investment firm, she was profoundly unhappy. What went wrong? She had not yet achieved financial freedom. In her nine-step program, Orman covers the ingredients to financial success--confronting our beliefs and fears, learning the nuts and bolts (and insiders secrets!) of savvy management, and finding the spiritual trust that leads to abundance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars [billionaire] Oprah Winfrey's favorite money guru - 'nuff said!
i've given MANY of these away because...
3-0 out of 5 stars Advice is not revolutionary but good definitions
It turns out I had taken most of the steps Suze outlines in this book several years ago so I can't say I found out anything earth shaking.
3-0 out of 5 stars Overrated
Suze gives some good advice, especially to set up a will and revocable trust to help protect your family members, etc. But, it is a little too emotional and overdone."If you would just save that $2 a week you spend on whatever, you would have X amount of money on 20 years" over and over is a bit ridiculous.I really disagree with her dislike of professional money managers (I am not one) and the "follow your heart" approach. Most people who manage their own investments do not do as well as they would with a professional. In fact, many fail miserably. If you need medical advice, ask a doctor, if you need your kitchen redone, hire a contractor, and if you need advice on how to invest your money, given your situation and goals, ask a financial planner for help. Many people are in crummy dog stocks and worthless no-load mutual funds because they "followed their heart" and chased last years winners. Not a bad audio book, but my copy was really outdated (1997)--almost 10 years old.Buy something less emotional and more recent. ... Mr. Niven has done an excellent job. It is easier and more entertaining to read his book than the books by the masters of BSC (Kaplan and Norton).

Suggest you test your digital capability to download eBooks and open themby using Acrobat's "File\Digital Editions\Authorize Devices" before buying as Acrobat now requires a drm activation on each computer by computer and this apparently has to be transferred one to the other, and the worst part is that they apparently have major problems with their drm activation server such that I have been unable to get my "instant" pdf book for two days now. There many entries in the Adobe forum on this issue. The book involved is the Balanced Scorecard Step-by-step.

5-0 out of 5 stars Capital, a must read
If you are an investor and haven't learned of the advantages of the American Funds Family of Mutual Funds and its parent, Capital Reasearch and Management Company, this is a must read.Capital Research and Mngmt is a quiet company, they do not advertise, they do not sit for interviews or do press releases. They only manage money, period. As a result, they do it better than anybody. This book is the only place you will get in-depth information about the company short of visiting a broker who is equally enlightened.Discovering an equally enlightened broker, may I say, is rare to find in its own right.Rich people know about this company, but finding a rich person who will talk is equally difficult.Just read it, you'll see.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tedious at times, but a worthwhile read
I read this book on the advice of my investment advisor. The first half was tedious but the second half was packed with valuable information about a great company. This is stuff that I can use in my own business, and I don't regret the time that it took to wade through the early chapters.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Subject...Lousy Book!
What a great story! Capital Group has one of the most amazing long-term performances and is one of the most unique organizations in the industry! But this book just stinks. I can barely believe the Charlie Ellis wrote this. It's completely disjointed. There's no structure at all. It's like they just published his notes. He skips across generations within a single paragraph. He contradicts himself. About 150 of the 300 pages is fluff and adds nothing to the story. About 1/3 of EVERY page is footnotes that add nothing. He references chapters within the same chapter. It's just terrible. It's obvious the publisher was just in a hurry to get the book out to make a buck off the mutual fund scandal before the hype died off. How ironic that Capital Group takes a long term approach, launching new funds against the tide, while the people at Wiley (by launching this book before it was ready) have shown themselves to be a bunch of short-sighted money grubbers. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
Principles of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets contains a great deal of information regarding economics in the United States. As a student, I find it to be poorly written. The authors/editors make constant reference throughout the text to other sections of the text. For example, we will discuss this in depth in chapter seven, but for now, lets reflect our continued study from chapter two and three. By doing so, we will be better prepared to read chapter eleven when we get to it. If the authors / editors left out the references and just left the actual information needed to learn the material, the student would be able to follow the material and perhaps understand the topic better. I am strongly encouraging our economics department to seek another text for future semesters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
This is the best book on structured equity products so far, it is fun to read but never trivial.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction & overview
This is still a great introduction to the subject. Being familiar with the majority of current financial 'engineering' texts, I can honestly say this is still a very good book. It does what it claims to do -and sticks to the intended audience.
3-0 out of 5 stars A nice book for starters...
This is definitely a very useful book for students taking financial engineering courses or complete newcomers in the aera of structuring. The book's written in a very clear and approachable manner and the author doesn't bother you with obscur mathematics. However, being myself a structurer of derivative products, I must unfortunately say that this book didn't really improve my knowledge in the field of structuring. But since I believe that Dr. Kat's main objective was to primarily target newcomers in the area of structured products, and not any professionals working in the business, I still think that the book is a respectable achievement. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great textbook
I'm usually very critical of textbooks, but this one reads extremely well. It is clearly organized and progresses in a logical manner. The subject material is inherently difficult, but the authors do an excellent job explaining both the common-sense and mathematical basis for each topic. I have no formal background in finance or accounting but I'm doing well in a 300-level course with just this book to thank. Anyone who wants to educate themselves about stock/bond values, interpreting balance sheets, etc, would benefit greatly from this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for a hard course
