Trading is serious business, although you wouldn't think so, considering the way many people approach it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Solid technical analysis book
This book is worth the money. The author presents solid explanations on the use of technical indicators and statistical calculations of the market. He guides you step by step in order to understand the specific applications and use of technical analysis and use of mathematical calculations applied to the financial markets. The depth of research and examples is very broad and extensive, plus the examples of the actual programming code in order to create your own trading systems is very helpful. Recommended by MTA to complete the CMT course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Technical Details for the Technical Analyst
Many people refer to the Achelis book for simple, straight-forward descriptions of technical analysis tools.I too have it on my primary bookshelf. However, lately, more often than not, I find myself reaching for Kaufman's book to get good background on the various ways of technically analysing trading options. He has chapters devoted to practically every indicator type you may encounter:chart reading, events, regressions, trending, momentum, oscillators, seasonality, cycles, patterns, multiple time frames, and advanced techniques. He then goes into some details regarding system testing, practical considerations, risk control, and diversification. As a wrap up, he provides some end-notes for the mathematically inclined.

I recibed the Instructor's edition book, but there is a note in the back cover of the text:"NOT FOR SALE EDITION" and I paid for it $128 USD. I hope will exist more retailer`s control.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it
I have had many textbooks over the years and this is one of the best I have had. Some textbooks I have not even bothered to read but this one clearly explained the concepts it presented and was a great addition to my instructor's lectures. It gave a lot of real life examples in order to show applicablility and I actually didn't mind reading the chapters. The key learning objectives were really good as well as the questions at the end in order to meet educational needs. The online tools available with this book were also essential to passing exams with good grades. It was worth having to buy for my class. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
A lot of good info.Fills in the gaps in my knowledge of investing, finance, banking, estate planning, retirement options, etc. There are quite a few typos, however, and a lot of awkward sentence structure.Strange because it's nothing that MS Word wouldn't catch. It needs a pro writer re-write.

3-0 out of 5 stars Recommended by BU
This is a really great book for CFA. Its the text book officially recommended by Boston University. The style of writing is very precise and the contents are very well organized. The material is well presented. I would personally recommend this book as a reading for beginners of CFA courses.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Encylopedia
I went to a financial professional who was going to charge me $2000 for advice.I saw this title on their office shelf, and I bought the book instead. I saved tons of money and I taught myself what they know. This is not a gimmick book, like how to get rich quick or make millions in real estate. It's more like a financial encylopedia. This book is great for the working person who needs to know how to plan, or just wants to speak the same language as the financial profesisonals. Thanks to this book, I didn't pay a big commission. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Where Silicon Valley is Taking Medicine
This is a very interesting view of the advances being made in the electronic area of medicine.
5-0 out of 5 stars A lively blend of autobiography and health industry survey
THE END OF MEDICINE: HOW SILICON VALLEY (AND NAKED MICE) WILL REBOOT YOUR DOCTOR profiles the emerging new technologies which will change medicine from one which offers chronic care and after-illness detection to a proactive medical community which will emphasize early detection and quick cures. Author Andy Kessler discovered his cancer quite by accident, literally - his effort to discover new keys to self-help and emerging health tests makes for a lively blend of autobiography and health industry survey revealing the cutting edge of medical cures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why health care has to change and cogent observations about how it might change for the better.
The title of his book is intended to be provocative and is given in its more correct form and in proper context in the last paragraph of the book: "It feels like it's not the end of the road in Portola Valley, at Stanford, at the Hutch, or for scanning.Instead, it feels like the start of something big - probably just the end of medicine as we know it."And I would guess that Kessler is correct that medicine as we know it today is going to be transformed in one way or another into something quite different than it is today. Why?

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the serious investor
This is a great book by a student of the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Investing Book I Ever Read
Well...maybe second best...haha.The best investing book I ever read is still the classic, "A Random Walk Down Wallstreet" because it's more concised. This book is a lot more comprehensive but basically preaches the same message. For those who don't really have patience reading almost 300 pages, two words for you: index fund.Specifically, Vanguard Index Fund.So on the cover of the book, you see a comment from Bogle hailing it as the "Best investing book of the year"...mmm...wonder why.But the fact is, the Vanguard 500 is the cheapest S&P 500 index fund you can find.By cheapest I mean annual management fees that mutual funds charge...1% of a billion is a lot of money, and the fund managers get a fixed percentage regardless of the performance of the fund...robbery.This is one of the points the book makes: not to trust the so-called "advice" from the people in Wall Street.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overall, but is it ultimately contradictory?
Terrific guide to investing in general and the financial industry in particular; the chapter on "full-service" brokers is priceless.I came away with two basic themes:

Editorial Review

How can you join the ranks of America's wealthy (defined as people whose net worth is over one million dollars)? It's easy, say doctors Stanley and Danko, who have spent the last 20 years interviewing members of this elite club: you just have to follow seven simple rules. The first rule is, always live well below your means. The last rule is, choose your occupation wisely. You'll have to buy the book to find out the other five. It's only fair. The authors' conclusions are commonsensical. But, as they point out, their prescription often flies in the face of what we think wealthy people should do. There are no pop stars or athletes in this book, but plenty of wall-board manufacturers--particularly ones who take cheap, infrequent vacations! Stanley and Danko mercilessly show how wealth takes sacrifice, discipline, and hard work, qualities that are positively discouraged by our high-consumption society. "You aren't what you drive," admonish the authors. Somewhere, Benjamin Franklin is smiling. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow- I had no idea!
I guess that when you think of millionaires, you think of flashy people with nice cars and a lot of bling, but I had no Idea that there were so many BORING millionaires!I guess it's not really pboring to have over a million dollars, but I want to be able to enjoy my monye.THeat's the purpose of this book , though- to show that you have to be boring and then you can get to be a millionaire with all the money you didn't spend on fun stuff!I almost fell asleep a couple times reading this, but when I stayed awake it was really eye-opening.I won't scoff at those people who don't have "big hats" but have a lot of cattle anymore.

3-0 out of 5 stars Common Sense
Nothing really groundbreaking here.Mostly common sense. You can visit a few websites and virtually get the same info presented in this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unrealistic, repetitive, couldn't finish
This book was interesting at first. It shatters what most of us think the typical millionaire looks and acts like, but that only takes a chapter. After that, it just keeps repeating itself over and over."Who do you think bought the $1000 watch and who bought the lower priced watch?"Yeah, yeah, I get it; the millionaire has a lower priced watch than the overspending, no real wealth guy.

I was often puzzled by employees in their early 20s.They brought different values, expectations and skills to the workplace. My job was to teach them the service ethic, to keep them long enough to get the benefit of my training efforts and keep them motivated to put in a good day's work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
This book is a quick read and addressed the outages in my understanding of how to value companies and structure rounds of funding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Check Out Author's DVD as Well - Negotiating Term Sheets
This was a really great resource - but even better is author's new product called Negotiating Term Sheets and Valuations in Venture Capital Deals (ISBN 1597010987).It is a 100 minute DVD that has a lot of different material in it that is critical for term sheets and valuations. It also covers specific negotiation strategies and roles and motivations for each key deal participant - which is not covered in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Term Sheet Analysis and Composition
A great book for understanding term sheets and a much needed book for entrepreneurs, who really do not have many good books to choose from.

3-0 out of 5 stars Broad coverage, but not for the faint-hearted
Written by a University of Chicago professor, this book comprehensively covers times series topics relative to investment and trading-oriented finance (i.e., Wall Street money-making machines).Treatment is generally clear and thorough, but an advanced math and stat background is an absolute prerequisite for understanding the materials.
5-0 out of 5 stars For self-learners and for future reference
This is the bible of financial time series analysis. All the main methods are included, with each of them being well described and provided with readable examples. You physics quants out there who are new to finance can use this as a self-contained textbook, while you stats guys and gals can use this as a quick reference. The treatment of VaR is the only real weakness, and you will be hindered a little if you don't have access to S-Plus.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best textbook I have ever read
First of all, it is well written in a very practical point of view. The whole book is aimed fullly to real financial data(appended in the author's web). People can gain not only the well-explained theories but the hand-on experience with data analysis using SPLUS or any other package.

2-0 out of 5 stars Shady Advertising
Had I known about the holy roller content throughout this book (especially in one chapter, but sprinkled throughout), I wouldn't have bought it. I wouldn't have a problem with it at all...except for the fact that such religiously-based content was concealed in the title, description (on the back), & introduction (in the front & back flaps). There was no mention of God, Jesus, Bible, etc. in any of these places. If this author is so keen on using his religious beliefs (inner-mingled with an extremely secular, materialistic topic) to turn a profit...fine. But at least be honest about it. Isn't that one of the tenets of Christianity? If the author is so devoted to his faith, perhaps he shouldn't be shy (shamed?) about shouting from the rooftops that his book is about money and Jesus.

I bought this book in 1998 after my Chapter 7 bankruptcy.I give this book the credit for me now having a credit score of over 700.I was told by Mr. Synder of a great secured credit card at that time "FCNB" (not available anymore) that was one of the best to help repair credit.I have always paid low interest rates on cars (1.9% thru Honda) and purchased a brand new (just built) home in 2002.I have purchased boats and four wheelers all financed thru reputable lenders.I loved this book!!!I really liked the part where it explained how you need to get a copy of your credit report after discharge and make sure all the outstanding balances are changed to zero.I believe that was the best tip ever.I had a finance manager at a auto dealer tell me I had the best looking bankruptcy credit report ever.
