5-0 out of 5 stars A handbook for world changers
No matter how you identify yourself in the human ecosystem -- worker bee, sheriff, manager, capitalist, entrepreneur, politician, healer, parent, activist or consultant -- this book is going to turn on lights in your brain. It's that multi-layered. It's also that packed with the kind of simply brilliant insights that are totally familiar, and you wonder why you didn't remember that you knew that.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Starfish and the Spider ... Yes!
I have a childhood memory of building a go-cart. Every kid in the neighborhood was involved. Who was in charge? Whoever had the right answer in the moment of the next right thing to do. Hands, hearts, minds worked together, one idea building on another. It was an emergent experience in every sense of the word. The go-cart was more beautiful and functional than any one of us could have built alone.
3-0 out of 5 stars Logical Flaw
I must preface by saying I know nothing about starfish, and I have not read this book.I have read several positive reviews of it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be from bad to worse
Despite trying very hard to deny that this is just another fad management book - there is nothing new in this title.Clueless managers will recite the core principals of this book and treat them as gospel as they try to improve their bottom line.It is also worth noting that at least one of the "great" organizations in the book, Fannie May, has imploded in an accounting scandal. Not the worst fad management book ever written, but that isn't saying much.

4-0 out of 5 stars A huge business hit of the early 90s that has aged pretty well
This is one of the business classics in the past twenty years. It has sold a huge number of copies and I am sure many of those purchased copies were actually read!As impressive as its sales numbers have been, the way it has affected the approach to the way business was discussed and talked about for the past dozen years has been even more impressive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reviews, anyone?
This is an excellent textbook, one that I have used in two of my Environmental Science classes (namely, Environmental Problems of Man [Bio 11], and Energy for the Future [Envi Sci 1].) While not completely without bias (which is mostly subtle, and not totally incorrect), the book offers a solid introduction to many environmental issues. The introduction chapter of the textbook states that environmental science is interdisciplinary, and the book is laid out accordingly. Chapters run the gamut from biology, chemisty, simple physics, and pure ecological common sense. An excellent purchase for any serious scientist and/or conscientious environmentalist.

1-0 out of 5 stars hmm
I'm kinda dissappointed because the seller stated that this book is hardcovered. But when I received it, it was copied and paperback.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear path to personal accountability-- no question about it
If you like your self-help advice in a quick-to-read, easy-to-digest format, you'll enjoy this sequel to the book, QBQ! The Question Behind the Question. In his first book, author John G. Miller explained that instead of whining, "Why does everything bad happen to me?" you should take responsibility and ask yourself, "What can I do to improve my situation?" That's the QBQ, and asking it stops you from blaming and complaining, and empowers you to find your own solutions. In this book, Miller takes personal accountability up a notch, and teaches you how to improve your relationships at home and at work by adopting the five "Advantage Principles: learning, ownership, creativity, service and trust." At times, the book can get a bit preachy, but the examples are entertaining and the advice is simple, clear and solid. If you're looking for a fast shot of effective, feel-good self-help advice, we recommend Miller's accessible program. Or to pose the question his way: if your QBQ is, "What can I read to learn how to solve my own problems?" this book is your answer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shallow and Poorly Written
QBQ is common sense. For a top motivational speaker I would expect a little more depth than three paragraph chapters with little gems of wisdom culled from office banter or internet rumors.I'm sure there are other authors out there who write about personal responsibility and accountability and have more to offer....
5-0 out of 5 stars Just like QBQ! - simple, effective - and deep!
Each employee at our manufacturing consulting firm receives a copy of QBQ! to read.We have a short dialogue and its contents are referenced daily. Every time I listen to Miller's "book on tape" CD or re-read QBQ!, something new hits home.I have shared these books as gifts with employees and friends and with my family as well. From my wife to each of the four children ages 22 to 14. It makes a difference at all levels and now Flipping the Switch, Miller's new book, is also wonderful and being read by all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Business and Its Environment (5th Edition)
This book is an easy read. It has tons of useful information. I would recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition is Better
There is a new edition (the fifth) for this book, and it is better than the edition shown here. While avoiding a polemical view, Baron illustrates business ethical priciples with very poignant examples and stories. The case studies are very up to date and fun to read.More than that, though, the case studies can form a basis for classroom debate and discussion which not only brings the material to life but also promotes critical thinking and articulation among students.
4-0 out of 5 stars The book for dilettante readers
The author provided some good examples demonstrating a picture of business and its environment. People who have exposed to Industrial Organization (or at least some levels of application of game theory) will get bored of all arguments without mentioning anything about its quantitative aspect. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Process Employees Like the Best
I have worked in this field for several years and observed Fortune 500 companies in every phase of implementing behavior-based safety into their organizations. I have witnessed first hand all of the major consulting companies installing BBS initiatives using the books of other authors in this field.I can unequivocally recommend Dr. McSween's book as the most successful and practical.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Values-Based Safety ProcessSECOND EDITION
This is a great, great book. Having studied safety culture management for many years, this is the best book I have seen on the subject. A practical, meat and potato's guide to establishing a successful, high-performance safety culture, with a proven method that absolutely works. McSween holds your hand and takes you right down the road where you need to go with a clear, understandable writing style that starts at the basics and takes you all the way through how to celebrate your success. The second edition has lots of case studies and a great section on safety leadership. Buy this book! Also, read some great safety articles at McSween's website "Quality Safety Edge".

5-0 out of 5 stars Improving the BBS process?
Dr. McSween's book 'The Values-based Safety Process' was referenced in a paper he co-authored at last June's ASSE Safety Conference. One challenge we face is applying the principles of BBS in a single worker environment - his paper and book have provided us with insights on how we might move forward - with BBS ownership from all levels in our organization.Well worth the investment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars At the cutting edge
While the concept of sustainability and sustainable development is still ethereal, BobDoppelt has his finger at the pulse of our best thinking, practices and strategy for implementation. Iresonate with his view that the process of achieving sustainability is messy and non-linear and people enter it from many directions. This book has informed my understanding and has helped structure a subject that has a moving target component to it. Bob Doppelt's work has credibility and substance for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on change and sustainability
Bob Doppelt is the first sustainability expert to describe the nuances and challenges of successfully implementing a systemic sustainability program. Where others have said that "you need to get the people in the organization involved," Doppelt goes deeper and tells us how to do this. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
I have used the Voice of the Customer and Concept Engineering processes for the past 7 years at both large and small companies and have continued to relly on this book. The process can be well adapted based on the scope of the project. The book is very cleary laid out and is an excellent reference. It is packed full of helpful tips and information. I recommend it to anyone wanting to proactively listen to their customers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Self Explanatory and Impactful
This book captures a process we relied on heavily at McKinsey and Co. It is a step by step guide to helping project teams understand, interpret and act upon the customers' needs. This book is helpful to anyone running a project - whether it is an internal or external project. As the president of a large business, I am ready to buy this book for my entire staff. I would be thrilled if my employees ran projects in this manner and streamlined their communication with me. One of the most useful books I have read in the last five years and hopefully one that my staff will quickly adopt as their process they use to manage.

4-0 out of 5 stars My question: will anyone act accordingly after reading this?
I say this book is worth reading, after watching The Corporation (the documentary).
3-0 out of 5 stars Pickedlow fruit missed the Agribusiness
This book is written very well and is pretty straightforward. So straight forward you can get most of the concepts of the book by reading the table of contents. There can't be much to argue with in the book because virtually every corporate hack who raked in the money during the obscene years is now preaching the same messages of corporate redemption.Expense stock options, treat employees fairly, create an environmental scorecard.... wake me up when it is over.In short, there is nothing new in these pages but the way it is recapped is very sweet primer on the subject. But my question is why did Batstone stop where he did?Where are the chapters relating to the ethics of afdvertising and PR? The ethics of obscene campaign contributions and political lobbying efforts? Where are the chapters about companies holding communities hostage by leveraging the threat of relocation for sweet tax deals? The chapters about what truly sustainable business practices mean about the globalization of companies?5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Essential Advice
David Batstone's excellent book on corporate integrity is a must-read for executives and managers who want ideas on how to create profitable but soulful businesses that show heart as well as logic. This is not a text that preaches from the pulpit or revels in moral condemnation of Enron's misdeeds. For those of us who are sick to the teeth of reading Enron/Anderson post-mortems, Batstone's book will come as a refreshing change. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book!
I first met the book in the uni library. Having been teaching natural resources and environmental economics, I find this intermediate textbook with is useful and worthy of recommendating for those postgraduates whohave strong interests in theoretical exploration. Since almost alltextbooks in the market are elementary and are not suitable for theadvanced readers, this book with new approaches has been increasingly usedin the uni. However, this book does not pay enough attention toenvironmental policy. This should be considered by the authors when thethird edition is composed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Prescient wrt OIF
Dr. Chua makes a pretty good case that democracy and free markets are not the end all - be all of civilization. In fact, in many cases, attempts to institute democracy by an ethnic minority have been unsuccessful and resulted in intense violence and backlash by the majority population.Further, free market democracy, an idealism that even we in the U.S. haven't achieved, is sometimes a mis-begotten notion for some cultures / states.Dr. Chua makes a good case that we need a different brand of globalization than what we're selling / instituting "now". (*recall that this was published before OIF)If she were to update her book, OIF would provide clear examples of her assertions and, in fact, might cause people who want a quick-fix and / or immediate results to re-think their arguments.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be widely influential
"World on Fire" begins to seriously penetrate the question of why capitalistic free trade is not expanding economic opportunity broadly and evenly, as its champions believe it should. This book is essential reading for anyone who thinks politico-economic systems are accountable for actual results. Those whose primary allegiance is to theory and deeply-held beliefs may find it difficult to absorb the realities presented.
3-0 out of 5 stars very flawed, but still interesting
Ms Chua is to be commended for raising the topic of the downside of globalization, but I find her premises terribly flawed.
