Understanding the way things work.
I read this book during my course of IPE while studying an MBA. These book will really help students, financial advisors, CEO�s, politicians and everyone involved in International Managementto make better analysis and take better decisions. Some time people believes in a conspiracy and take events like a isolated things, the fact is that everything is related and the three major perspectives of the world are in constant conflict everyday. �The three major perspectives? Yes: The liberals and the free trade perspective, the nationalists and the structuralism or modern socialist. It also covers the green perspective (oriented to take care of the environment) . Balaam makes a very clear analysis and he doesn't take sidesso you will understand the way thinks happen and the media and politicians will not cheat on you to push you to "take sides on poll's". Enjoy.

Pornography for Economic Geeks
I really enjoyed this book, even though it dedicated itself to a rather dry discussion of the Austrian School of Ecenomics's explanations for the causes of the Great Depression. I have to say that I simply did not understand much of Economics until I started reading Rothbard because he argues that much of the Economic theories that I had such a hard time grasping were hard to understand because they were absurd.
Surpassed by More Recent Works. Read Bernanke's Book Instead
Rothbard's book has been outdated for a very long time. Modern economic quantitative methods have advanced our understanding of the Great Depression considerably. Instead, I highly recommend the book "Essays on the Great Depression" by Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Federal Reserve.
Solid
Murray Rothbard is one of the clearest writers in modern history, and this theories are well based. I loved every minute of this book, certainly a page turner for any economist.

Every American should read this book
Whatever your political preferences are, there is no denying the financial issues we face in our near future due to our current increasing deficits and entitlement spending.The detailed accounts in this book of the fiscal policies, past and present, as set by America's leaders should be engrained in the thoughts of all Americans; especially come Election Day.Mr. Peterson provides abundant detail and appropriate political blame combined with practical (and often painful) solutions to shed light on the financial elephant in the room that no one wants to discuss.It is time to raise the accountability bar for our leaders and for ourselves."Running on Empty" is a non-partisan account of America's future as it stands today.Every American should read this book and think about what they can do to help right the ship and ensure a strong nation in the future.

Pete Peterson is a former member of the Nixon administration where he served as the Secretary of Commerce. He has worked with budgets and forecasting and he has some important concerns about the fiscal health of the United States government. He presents some of these concerns in this book, showing how Republicans and Democrats alike are playing Russian roulette with the taxpayer's money.

A REFERENCE book
This book is most helpful for pointing out the puns made in languages with which one is not familiar.It also helps with some of the historical and literary allusions.IT IS NOT A BOOK THAT IS A GUIDE TO READING FINNEGANS WAKE.That said, it is nevertheless invaluable as a reference book when reading the Wake.

Disappointing
Roland McHugh is an admirable Joyce scholar and most certainly knows more about the Wake than I, but I must say this book is not at all what I was looking for in an annotated guide.I was expecting the format of Ulysses Annotated, but instead was confronted with a very different mode of operation.McHugh's book is very useful in two areas, those being 1.)Foreign Words and 2.)Joyce's compound words.This is because the author presents the annotations as if they were personal notes in his own copy of the Wake, rather than full explications as found in Ulysses Annotated.McHugh argues that this will force the reader to make his own connections and lead to more frutiful conclusions, but the same goal could be accomplished by simply doing what McHugh has done, read FW, study it, and make notes of your own.Any beginner who is not familiar with some of the primary themes of the Wake will be sorely disappointed.The best example of the way McHugh skims over these is found in the preface (which I believe can be previewed on this site), where he shows how in a regular annotated guide a reference to Giambattista Vico would take up 9 lines of text, briefly explaining his theory, and in his own method it is simply referred to as 'Vico'.This reference would mean absolutely nothing to a reader unfamiliar with Vico.For a reader seeking to add a little convenience to their own personal study, this is perfect.For the reader seeking (relatively) full explanations of historical and literary allusions and such, this is most certainly not the guide to get.This book would have been exponentially more useful had it simply been integrated into the text of FW, ie one page of FW, one page of annotations.

so many things he misses, so much obvious stuff he includes, and so little detail on the meaning of some of the annotations end up making this book somewhat of a nuisance, breaking up the flow which makes the Wake enjoyable.I still prefer Joseph Campbell's Skeleton Key to FW, though it admits that it does not try to catch every allusion.I find that most of the things that I really do want to find out, where I hear some echo of something, he doesn't touch on, or doesn't touch on to my satisfaction.Really, this project should be a collaboration online where people would add their comments to the possible meanings of different lines, because there are so many.Each man comes at it with his own knowledge, interests and needs, and can't get everything.So while this is useful for some, it's more of an impediment for me.A tattered security blanket that trips you up while you walk, you feel like Linus from peanuts lugging out this big blue thing. ... History of manufacturing and quality control
I saw a reference to this book in Womack et al's The Machine that Changed the World, a book about Toyota's lean production system and automobile manufacturing in general.That book starts with the shift from craft production to Just-In-Time production and necessarily passes through Ford's production system.Hounshell ends his book with Ford in the Depression and the struggle against GM.

If you want to know the true story of interchangeable parts
Hounshell is a serious academic historian, which means that he doesn't put words in the mouths of dead people, and he draws prudent inferences from period documents, drawings and photographs. For Absolute Beginners in Community-Building

If Push Comes to Shove, Will Robert Rubin Become a Republican?
Robert Rubin is a cultural liberal.He even mentions reading Henry Miller and Jack Kerouac during his formative years.His coauthor Jacob Weisberg is associated with the slightly left of center website Slate.com. Regrettably, like many American Jews he simplistically seems to gravitate towards a knee jerk affiliation with the Democratic Party.He was born during the disgraceful era when anti-Semitic "gentleman's agreement" social polices were often the norm.I doubt if he ever gave serious consideration to joining the GOP.Jews were simply suppose to be existentially committed Democrats.Whatever, Rubin is very bright guy who clearly understands the value of free markets.He does have some disagreements with various Republican economic policies concerning taxes and balanced budgets.Nonetheless, Robert Rubin is not a Daily Kos populist style Democrat.In other words, Clinton's former Secretary of the Treasury is unlikely to rebuke Wal-Mart anytime in the near future.

Solid overview of US cultural history from 1946-1962
Whitfield's book serves as a succinct overview of American Cold War culture, which he defines as ending in the early 1960s (a questionable decision but one made by many scholars who employ the "Cold War Culture" rubric). Culture of Cold War -- Whitfield
Whitfield's book is extremely informative. The connections he makes are fascinating. The book made me want to go out to the library and Blockbuster and look at the popular books and movies he talks about for a second time in a fresh light.

Intelectually Challenging
This was rated a "3" by me because it was a little redundant as well as choppy.The book was great in the sense of intelecutal reading but lacked the story like atmosphere.I wouldn't recommend this book to be read for enjoyment, but it would be great if it were used as research on a paper.The chapters are broken up into sections 1,2,3,..etc, so once you have read one section the rest are really just other examples of what the author is trying to get across,easy to skim through for good facts and info.Good Luck! ... Great analysis on ways to go about providing Public Goods
I think that this book closes the knowledge gap surrounding this topic. It is one thing to theorize about the benefits or negative impacts of global public goods (or bads) and another to suggest ways to go about dealing with GPG. This book is extremely enlightening and presents realistic solutions!

Perfect Follow-up
Global Public Goods and Multilateralism must intertwine in order for progress and provision to come about. This is an idea that is so often neglected and forgotten. This book places an importance role that nations must carry out...it also provides recommendations for issues that arise in the midst of GPG provision. This book does not negate the global issues that exist within and surrounding the international realm...yet the book does a fabulous job on highlighting the importance of addressing these issues as a means of furthering the progress of Global Public Goods.

Thought Provoking
This books is an excellent follow-up of the Global Public Goods: International Cooperation in the 21st Century. It helped me visual and understand the provisionary measures needed to bring about GPGs. ... Read more

Non-economist's view
In many ways this book is a gem.It encourages critical thinking and it provides useful information on employment data and variety of other topics.However, if you are an average reader hoping that after reading this book you will be able to identify when the media manipulate the numbers, you will probably be disappointed.Even Mr. Epstein suggests in the last paragraph of the book that he did not have much to say to help an average reader cope with econospinning.This is too bad because most people could benefit from his general approach to the issues: go straight to the source of data, make your calculations and logic transparent and respectfully challenge people who engage in spinning.
