4-0 out of 5 stars Good to read but be aware
If you are an experienced reader of financial publications and would like to read a view that is very different but presented with arguments and reasoning - this is a good book to read. A different view will likely shine a new light to known facts and pull some new ones that you have not considered recently. Even if you don't agree with the author, such reading has high value if facts are presented well. These are. You should keep in mind though, that author stresses that he foresaw long bull market before many, knew its characteristics, etc. But his own advisory service (tracked by Hulbert Financial Magazine) has very poor results. He is way behind broad market on a "regular investors" portfolio and dramatically negative in his "trader" portfolio. His performance looks very consistent bad during a good 20 years period. So, in fact, you would look like a true hero if you took all his "trader" advises and did just opposite! Note, that it is not just stock picking that is bad. Timing-only returns are even worse. So, remember, your brain cannot retire yet. Given that - it is a good reading, good perspective to consider.
2-0 out of 5 stars This book has a Fundamental problem
This book is well written. Disregarding the chapter on deflation, it is very clear too (Prechter seems to be a very clear expositor).
2-0 out of 5 stars What Crash?
This book contains some useful historical information and some insights into the mass psychology of booms, bubbles, and busts.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not just another view ...
I find Prof Huang's "Selling China" much more than just an academic achievement which it is -- with its disciplined arguments supported by a wealth of well-researched facts.5-0 out of 5 stars the year's best book on china
I have seen a number of rave reviews for this book in various economic journals and now I have read the book myself. This is a must read for those who wishes to gain a deep understanding of China's fast-evolving economic and business landscape. I also recommend it to readers who are interested in an unconventional and novel take on foreign direct investment ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner from Blustein
Paul Blustein may have have created a new genre:the real-life financial crisis thriller.Having dissected the Asian financial crisis in "The Chastening," he now turns to Argentina in "And the Money Kept Rolling in (and Out)."The book tells the fascinating story of how Argentina, after being lionized as the poster child of free market reform in the early 1990s, became hooked on foreign debt that ballooned far faster than its ability to service it.The outcome was default and financial ruin in 2001-02, with vast economic hardship for the Argentine population.
4-0 out of 5 stars Economics of Debt
This was a very interesting book about the IMF and its dealing with Argentina. Argentina has had a colorful past of financial blunders including one in 1890 which almost brought down Barings Bank when it defaulted on its bond payments. So it was not surprising when Argentina bankrupted again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Argentina's Wild Ride
A fast paced enjoyable read. Paul Blustein tells the story of the rise and fall of Argentina's economy in the roiling seas of free trade and free markets of the nineties in the style of a novel. His behind the scenes look at the International Monetary Fund were very elightening and throughly entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars critical baseline study for measuring change in north korea
As another reviewer appropriately noted in assessing this book, "Kim Il-song's North Korea" is now 25+ years out of date.Because of this, Helen-Louise Hunter's study--edited down from a longer, classified report that she prepared while working at the Central Intelligence Agency--offers little meat for assessing the personal style and leadership track record of Kim Chong-il, who succeeded his father--Kim Il-song--as the absolutist leader of North Korea in 1994.Still, the book is a must-read for any scholar or journalist seeking to estimate the likelihood of future social collapse and regime change and/or to establish how much policy change Kim Chong-il has initiated.
2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading and very limited
A book strictly for North Korea specialists. Certainly, as its reviews and the book-cover blurbs indicate a "unique" study. However what none of them say is; (1) this is strictly a basic socio-economic study; and (2) most tellingly, it may well be "from a declassified CIA study", but what they are not saying is that this study was written in 1980-81 and not updated etc for a 1999-2000 book publication release. Thus a study written in 1980 is dealing with 1970s material. Thus we have Kim Il-Sung's North Korea of the 1970s. We are reading about North Korea of 25+ years ago.2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading and very limited

2-0 out of 5 stars eh...
My senior year i had to pick this book for an economics project... bad choice. I do like how there are boxes placed every so often with little stories/parables/facts etc. thats pretty nice i'll say, but the rest is repetitive bi***in, depressing, whining information that does interest me in the least. i think i'm better off going and reading some harry potter books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful book...
Like most of Galeano's work, this is a powerful book. This is so, because it goes to the point, with no hypocrisy and no fear. It is a description of our reality in the third world and in my case, Latin America. He is very clear regarding our worst problem: the corrupted political class that we have to suffer. These gangsters that we have in Govt' in almost every country are worst than the foreign corporations...because they are stealing from their own people..but this we forget....because our second big problem is : bad memory...
5-0 out of 5 stars ashamed to be "upside down"
Upside Down is a shocking and passionate documentation of the world's injustices that our "upside down" First World society has turned our back upon. This book will not merely evoke sympathy and remorse, but will leave you screaming for change. I found myself drawn especially to Galeano's dark humor and satirical, poetic style. Galeano's fiery language left me speechless. However, at times I did become glazed after reading list after list of facts. I found that the most inspirational and telling portions of the book were the rare asides and anecdotes in which individuals' stories were recounted. Galeano shows us the bleak reality that we have accepted- a reality where children toil from dawn to dusk to stay alive- a reality where power is driven by security, money and terror. This book will make you ashamed to be privileged. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Survival Guide for Paralegals
I am looking for my first job in the paralegal field, and thought this book would be more helpful so far as providing insight into the various areas within the field. However, there are only two chapters that cover specific specialties in the field, one on litigation and the other describes the corporate culture. The rest of the book deals with very general topics, such as how to get along with people in the office, how to be organized, how to deal with stress.Give me a break! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Too expensive, but good
This is an excellent book. The price is simply outrageous, though.Over $50 for a thin paperback? My consolation is that I should be able to get a decent price for it when I sell it after my economics class is over.

4-0 out of 5 stars How did market society come to be?
This book examines the transformation of traditional society into market society: the necessary pre-conditions and steps. The author reminds us that, despite the material advances of modern society, some key economic ideas still apply. All societies must be organized for the material survival of its members. The inter-dependencies among societal members in simpler societies have not been eliminated in market societies, despite the hyping of the independent, self-maximizer by modern theorists; in fact, the complexities of modern societies may well create more dependence, not less. And market societies do have some inherent problems.3-0 out of 5 stars Concise but Biased
This is a concise text book for use in high school or first-year college classes on the history of economics that traces the development of the market economy. The basic framework of the book is valuable: how the market transcended earlier forms of economic organization based on command and/or tradition. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Biased Analysis
One of the most comprehensive books on the economic effects of immigration on the native population is "Heaven's Door" by Dr. George Borjas.Dr. Borjas has for decades been trying to prove the adverse effects of immigration on natives.Although his research has continued since 1999, "Heaven's Door" is his most recent major work.

A very sound piece of economic work.Regardless of what you feel about Borjas's conclusions, you must acknowledge the value of his economic analysis. To truly have an understanding of the immigration debate, youmust have read Borjas's work. His contributions to the field areimmeasurable. While I do not always agree with him on the place of"ethnicity" in the realm of immigration policy making, I am moreeducated for even considering his proposal. In sum, I highly recommendthis book to anyone interested in immigration issues--especially thoseinterested in its economic impact. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Haven't We Been Down This Road Before?
Interesting to see a book like this come from Prestowitz, former Undersecretary in the Reagan Administration. Back then it was America losing its good jobs and future to the Japanese.Remember them?Japan, Inc....central planning...national industrial policy...would soon be running the world.American debt, loss of technological edge, outsourcing would all mean the USA would be reduced to second-world status by 2006.
5-0 out of 5 stars another one about globalization like the analysis of thomas friedman
I liked this book.Obviously, with the Cold War over, America now needs to compete globally with India and China, among others. This book talks about the ways that companies can do so and the challenges facing us.This book is quite similar to Thomas Friedman's book The World Is Flat, in places. The apologists for globalization say one thing--the opponents of multinational corporations' exploitation of workers say another thing-- but the fact remains that worldwide capitalism is changing, and each of us needs to change to remain employable. This book is a report on the inclusion of India and China's billions into capitalism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good contribution to debate of offshoring, comparative and absolute advantages
Clyde Prestowitz did a commendable effort in summarizing contemporary history over the last 60 years, especially over the last couple decades. It was refreshing to read that someone has dedicated some time to the importance of industrial policy. Many economists and politicians continue to adhere to the fantasy that the invisible hand of the market will address the needs of the consumer and the worker, while other nations actively work to protect their industries, maintain a tax-base, and promote some sort of job-security. They are interested in real jobs that are not only service-sector jobs, but also manufacturing jobs that could have and should have remained in the US. Faith in comparative advantage-based trading is only truly being implemented by the US, while other countries are taking advantage of this stance and gutting its industrial base and service-sector.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cramming World Government Down Your Throat
It's a good idea to find out what financiers like George Soros are thinking because it may give some hints of what is in our future. His book, "The Crisis of Global Capitalism" was rushed into print "at breakneck speed." That should give a hint about Soros' power and influence.
5-0 out of 5 stars Economic theory has misrepresented how markets behave
Reflexivity, is the two way interaction between thinking and reality.Reality is not separate from thinking.Reflexivity is acceptance that there is a reality and we are a part of that reality.Reflexity, strength of its statement is contingent on their impact.
4-0 out of 5 stars "policeman to the world"... on second thought...
One of Soros' most compelling arguments comes out of his experiences during the 90's- mostly during the Clinton years- that the Open Society should take an active role in becoming a strong advocate for creating nascent Open societies in areas of political and economic strife. He berates America (as the leader of the free world) for not taking an active role in promoting stable and fair markets in Russia, and not doing enough to prevent the tragedies in the Balkans. He even goes as far as to say that America should step up and become the "policeman of the world".
