Good read on U.S. economic history in the 20th century
My review is based on the first edition of this book.
repetitive and long-winded
I wanted a book to use in conjunction with Barbara Ehrenreich to examine modern American society from different viewpoints.I opted for this book, and regretted it.The book contains few new ideas, a much-rehashed thesis, and repetive and circular arguing.The students in my high school, senior level economics class found these flaws without any prompting from me.If repetitive ideas, long-winded prose and turgid structure are you idea of a good read, then this is the book for you.

This One Digs Deep!
The entangling bureaucracy that keeps a chokehold on Japan is exposed at last!I doubt if the Japanese Ministry of Finance wants you to read this one!Hartcher not only exposes how the bureaucracy works but also explains why Japan will always face an uphill battle until it is conquered.An excellent look at the ceremonial democracy that manages Japan!

I read this book before being seconded into the Japanese Ministry of Finance, and I'm afraid that not only has much of the material suffered badly from the passage of time, but the (perhaps inevitable) selective use of anecdotes risks leaving the unwary reader with a rather warped view of the MoF. Covers the very basics
This book makes a good fit for early beginners to partnership accounting. The main chapter contains material that is very generic and that may be gathered from any web-site on partnerships. Most of the material is very academic in nature, with significant portions devoted to exercises. A third of the book is dedicated to taxation and another third to liquidations, which are discussed in signficant depth. Nonetheless, if the reader wants to learn more about partnership implementations such as private equity or hedge funds, this book may not serve those needs. This book is best suited for a second course in accounting. Experienced business professionals are unlikely to enhance their knowledge of partnerships, unless they want to learn about liquidations and taxation.

"Orange County," writes Mark Baldassare, "is a place that is widely known but largely misunderstood." That's especially true of the bankruptcy proceedings the California county was forced to initiate in late 1994 after risky investments led to a $1.64 billion dollar loss. Baldassare's close analysis of the situation reveals that the crisis cannot, as popularly imagined, be blamed solely on the actions of unchecked financial management. Although the county treasurer's investment strategy was "an accident waiting to happen," Baldassare points to a two-decade trend of voter initiatives to simultaneously minimize tax increases and control the allocation of state tax funds, along with Orange County's political fragmentation, as contributing factors. He also points out that, contrary to its reputation as a stronghold of wealthy conservatives, the county is primarily made up of middle-class suburbanites of moderate political temperament.
