Technically solid, but weaker on policy arguments
"Created Unequal" is an impressive work of economic analysis of wage and wealth inequality.Although the book occasionally gets into some relatively rigorous economics, it should be accessible to the determined lay reader. A compelling case that politics affects wages.
Galbraith provides a cogent, well-documented argument that instability has more to do with wage inequality than does a mechanism for market efficiency. "When the ocean is flat, rowboats and dinghies can join thetrawlers out on the reef where the fish are running. But in a gale, thelittle boats sink while the large ones do not."He argues that reasonablewages obtain from low unemployment and that expecting science andtechnology to act as the "centerpiece of a progressive agenda is absurd."Highly recommended. ... comparison of effects of Black Death on English and Egyptian societies
Borsch's comparison is based on the different kinds of ownership of land in the two societies in the 14th century, the time when the Black Death struck Europe and the Middle East. "In contrast to their Egyptian counterparts, English landholders had a much more direct economic interest in the welfare and management of their estates." The basic reason for this was that the English landholders could pass their land on to their heirs. By contrast, the large majority of Egyptian landowners were "specialized warriors known as Malmuks" who could not pass their land on to their heirs; and even their ownership of it was tenuous in the factional conflicts and intrigues in Egypt at the time. Borsch finds the answer to his main question of why England managed to recover economically after the Black Death while Egypt did not in this difference in land ownership. A considerable proportion of each country's population, including those who worked the land, succumbed to the plague; which some historians have likened to a nuclear holocaust in the areas it afflicted. England's system of land ownership was the decisive factor in its economic recovery in the years after the Black Death. In order to keep their land productive and thus valuable, England's landowners were obliged to adapt to the new power the surviving workers had gained in the agrarian economy with the loss of so many to the disease. The Malmuks in Egypt, on the other hand, had scant incentive to make any adaptations to hold up the value of land they had only a precarious ownership of. Borsch draws out the economic, social, and to a lesser degree the historical effects of this fundamental difference between English and Egyptian landownership in the late medieval period. This is a really bad book
Making your way through this book is a difficult process that requires a great deal of patience and probably a dictionary. Unfortunately, the awards are few, made apparent when you realize the points that the author tries hard to obfuscate are superficial. Not only is the writing style nearly impossible to get through, the book lacks any deep analysis of culture or economics.The visual tools that the author uses to illustrate his theories are made up of huge oversimplifications of international economies.

One of the worst books I' ve ever read
This book is really one of the worst books on economics I've ever read. First, the conceptual approach of comparing economic systems is a joke - how useful is a dyadic system if ALL cases to be explored end up in one of the categories? Second, the book lacks any reference to the ongoing discussion about "new comparative economics" or neoinstitutionalism - both tools that could be very helpful to compare economic systems. The author either does not know these discourses or chose to ignore them. Third, the "analytical" results presented in this book are nothing more than the usual general prejudices about economic systems. The "overviews" over certain countries are a collection of platitudes which are really breathtaking in their oversimplification. Fourth, the style of writing is bad.
