4-0 out of 5 stars A novel and powerful cognitive-psychological theory
A pessimistic view about the vulnerability of Latin American democracies confronting the need to adopt harsh economic reforms predicted that any attempt at adjustment would be blocked by the population in order to avoid its high costs or, in the worst scenario, a painful reform could generate massive protests that would undermine the regime. However, the cases of Argentina and Peru refuted those predictions of incompatibility between democracy and market reforms. This book explains under what circumstances it is possible to implement successful economic reforms without destabilizing fragile democratic institutions. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars worth the money
As I read his column in the FT regularly I did have some idea as to the general direction this book would take.
5-0 out of 5 stars Full of ideas!
Very interesting and engaging book, highly recommended. However, I agree with other reviewers that the author is a bit too indulgent towards the many defects of continental European societies.
4-0 out of 5 stars Capitalism requires much more than just "free"markets
Kay shows that successful capitalistic development over time requires much more than just free markets.Free markets are a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for success.Additional requirements are the provision of significant amounts of public goods and infrastructure(health, education, transportation, communication),the rule of law, legal institutions, and the existence of social, political, and cultural institutions that minimize economic and political corruption.Kay's correct analysis is marred by his ignorance of three important side issues.First,he claims that Keynes provided no mathematical model of his theory of effective demand in the General Theory(Kay,p.179).Keynes's mathematical model is presented in chapters 19-21 of the GT.Keynes presented the major result on pp.261-262 TWICE-Full employment requires that the marginal propensity to spend equals 1.Keynes then presents the technical analysis in the appendix to chapter 19,chapter 20 and chapter 21.The formal result is that w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi),where mpc is the marginal propensity to consume, mpi is the marginal propensity to invest, and mpl is the marginal product of labor in the aggregate.Unless mpc +mpi=1,labor,as a whole, will be unable to reduce the unemployment rate by cutting their money wage.Second,Kay apears not to understand the difference between uncertainty and risk.He mistakenly associates uncertainty with the work of Allais and Kahneman and Tversky.Uncertainty analysis requires theincorporation of Ellsberg's analysis.Ellsberg appears nowhere in this book. Finally,Kay appears to be completely ignorant of the nearly 50 years of work by Benoit Mandelbrot demonstrating that the foundations for the Black-Scholes equation and the Efficient Market Hypothesis, the existence of a stable normal probability distribution, does not exist.Overwhelming statistical evidence has demonstrated that the relevant probability distributions for price movements in all financial markets are NOT normally distributed.I recommend that Kay seriously consider reading Mandelbrot's 2004 book,"The (Mis)Behavior of Markets"and then revising his book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars conspiracy theorist
The author is very likely a Kurdish nationalist, not implausibly a quite supporter of the PKK. As a Communist, he has no room for religion. His analysis is misleading, basically he runs after Muslims under the banner of Islamism, he seeks to undermine the Islamic religion to satisfy his own psychological needs. The author has suppervised the work of others who also claimed to have proved that Islam does not work. The author does not use objective scientific methods, he basically writes in a way that confirms his own priori conclusions. Read the book, if you wish, but with such qualifications in mind. You may read it to understand how the bigot's mind actually works.

1-0 out of 5 stars Timur Kuran
This is not a good book. It is rather descriptive in nature, poorly referenced, tests no hypotheses empirically and is too wordy. The author makes claims without any substantive evidence. He accumulates paragraphs and twists them in the way that leads him to his pre-assembled conclusions. The author does not seem to have the statistical tools of analysis, a great deficiency for a university professor. The author does not seem well-versed in the history of the Islamic world nor does he understand Islamic economics. He picks up few concepts he thinks will lead him to the conclusions he already knew, so he squeezes Islamic economics into a small area. Contrary to his claims, the main factor leading to the economic decline of the modern Muslim world is the adoption of Marxist ideology -almost every single Muslim country has adopted a Communist regime (leading to political repression by definition). This is not Islamic but rather Jewish Economics. Another factor, among others, would be colonization. Professor Kuran is not an expert on Islam, he would have done better had he sought endeavors in other areas that do not require rigorous empirical testing, perhaps literary work?.

5-0 out of 5 stars truly, truly necessary
While this book touches on the myriad ways in which Islam, when you get right down to it, is a recipe for poverty, its central focus is on the definitions, history, successes and failures, hypocrisies, and possibly viability of "Islamic economics."

5-0 out of 5 stars For advanced students
The person who buys this book must be really acquainted with economics (senior or master). It involves, as the title states, the determinants of growth and inflation, along with political matters. I really liked this book because it gathers econometric models to support the essays that consists in many political variables just as democracy and civil rights.Barro, as a Harvard professor, has a well-known academic life. So I would suggest for every macroeconomic student to buy this book, it really helps for courses just as Macroecon or Development Economics.

4-0 out of 5 stars A careful study.
This book is essentially a report on a series of analyses of thedeterminants of growth, democracy, civil liberties, and inflation. As astatistical analysis with interpretation, it is excellent. If you want toknow what factors really affect these variables, you will find answershere. However, the utility for modelers is limited, because the authorinexplicably omits to report the extimated constant terms in any of hisregressions. One hopes that succeeding publications will provide more helpto those who are trying to construct dynamic models of economic growth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An insightful analysis of the World's economic systems.
This book explores and compares the different economic systems throughout the world in an easy, almost non-academic manner (it's used in several universities as a textbook.) Mr. Gardner writes in an entertaining and easy-to-understand style, and his explanations are precise and informative. Having been written in 1988, the book still dedicates a good portion of its content to the Soviet communist economic system, which is now a "distant" memory.Still, it's a good reminder of how divided the world was economically and philosophically for almost the entire 20th Century. All in all, a must read for people who want to learn the basics (and a lot of nuances) of the main economic systems of the world ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful narrative of modern development
I was unfamiliar with the trends in African and Southeast Asian development before reading this book ... the title and subject seemed interesting. However, during the course of my reading it, I have grown significantly more knowledgable about how "3rd world" nations are on their own tracts to develop and enter the ranks of "modern societies".
