Classic book that hasn't sold millions of copies over the years for nothing!
While I don't think "What Color is Your Parachute" is a perfect book, it is certainly an excellent starting point for anyone embarking on a career path. As a professional coach, I find that is particularly well-suited to young people starting out and older people making career transitions.
Starts good, crashes in the end.
Don't buy this book.I'll summarize it for you.Don't just send out resumes, go and talk to people at the organization you want to work for.Happiness is more important than money.This book gets really preachy, religious, and cheezy in the second half.It has no place in a career book and is in very bad taste.Some quotes from the book, "Your first mission here on Earth is ...to seek to stand hour by hour in the conscious presence of God, the One from whom your Mission is derived.""Your second Mission here on Earth is .. to do what you can, moment by moment, day by day, step by step, to make this world a better place, following the leading and guidance of God's Spirit within you and around you."Save your money, just watch televangelists on TV if you want your life controlled by God.

Annoying at best...
I had to buy this book for class and I tried to give it a shot and read it, but it was really annoying.A lot of what we needed to find a job, was discussed in my portfolio class and was common sense.

Amazing
This book provides answers to unanswered questions and goes into subjects not covered in Fashion School. ;) I would sugest this book to any on in the fashion industry or still in school.It will help you grasp a better understanding of the when, why, and how things are done.

A Spell Binding Read
I got my hands on a copy of this book last night, and found it addictive. I noticed the raves from presidents of NPPA, ASMP, and APA on the back cover, and was impressed. Reading it last night, the book met, if not exceeded, the expections set by such prestigious reviewers. It was very real world, with tons of examples of contracts, negotiation tactics (as the author negotiated assignments and stock sales you see the back and forth via emails), and advice on how to avoid the many pitfalls we face as photographers today. I am putting to use many of his suggestions and recommendations starting tommorrow! A definite MUST HAVE book!

Better textbook than prior years
This is for esthetician students. The information is basic and well organized. The photos sometimes do not follow the text but it reads easily.

Most of the chapters are well written and understandable.I have found some discrepancies in the information, and feel that the book could have been edited a little better.The book explains sanitation but does not go into the correct method of sanitizing all items that one would use during a service.The material is quite dry, and could really use something to get the student excited about the occupation that they have chosen. ... It Has Worked So Far....
While I am only a high school Sophmore, and I don't have a *real* job, this book has been very helpful in deciding what to shoot for doing. I've heard people call this book too vague, but they can't tell you exactly what to do; it doesn't work that way. Once you get through the personality quiz portion, the author gives a somewhat detailed description of your specific personality type (I for example am and ENFP) and throws in suggestions in the description and also give a modest list of other possibilities. I'll admit it was a bit vauger than I had hoped but it gives you plenty of room to move around and a great place to start.
Excellent Book
This book has helped me choose a drastic career change I was almost afraid to reach for ten years ago.Since then, I've bought the book numerous times as gifts for friends who then share it with others.It's simple to use and relevant each time I go back to it.Whether you are looking for a career change or to better understand how to position yourself where you are, this book is extremely helpful in helping you realize your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes more clearly and based on that, how to find a fit in almost every situation.The author's other books are insightful too for relationships and advising your children.

Perhaps I had overly high expectations...
While I am aware that no career book is going to be a holy grail, this one in particular seemed rather useless. "You are an INFP. You feel fulfilled by helping people, so go find a job where you can do that" was pretty much the extent of the advice it offered. ... Read more

Pretty good read. Leaves out lots of the details.
I like the overall point of this book. I also agree with a lot of the stuff he teaches in regards to using real estate and owning your own business as the only true way to get superb rates of returns. However, he does make one huge assumption in the real estate section that is not clear: that you can rent a house for the same cost as your expenses. This may work in some cheaper areas, but in the places where houses have skyrocketed in price, expecting to get a high enough rent to cover all the fees is not realistic for some major areas. Also, he makes it sound like getting 150k is easy for a salary. Unfortunately for those of us in stable "normal" fields like engineering, nursing, accounting, etc... asking for a 30% raise would get you a lot of laughs at best. Nonetheless, I would still recommend it to other new grads.

Not magical but worth reading in the end
Masterson has written a book that could serve as a practical and seemingly well-intentioned guide to the process of building a fortune for the budding (and even not-so budding) careerist. I am not a financial specialist so I will not pretend to be able to assess the soundness of his financial ideas. I can tell you this however: since buying the book I have become thriftier, less idealistic when it comes to matters of money, and at the same time more financially ambitious - and with a plan.All this has not come at the cost of reducing the quality of my life, but on the contrary, I feel that my life has been enhanced in the last two weeks from reading this book as well as "Richest Man in Babylon". These changes came from small pieces of advice from Masterson's book rather than the larger ideas and plans. I am still sceptical of his views on real estate and stock market investment.Be warned that the book is a bit fluffy and sometimes you will have to read through a lot before getting substantial ideas and during those times you will not have the benefit of reading particularly engaging prose, so be patient, you will likely find that the wait was worthwhile.

When I first bought it for myself and skimmed the first few pages, I was very excited about the book and thought that it would be a worthwhile read. As I kept reading, though, it became increasingly apparent that this guy was just trying to sell copies of his book, and didn't have much worthwhile information to say.He constantly repeats that he is showing you how to "get rich" without providing any substantive advice.He repeats lists that have little or no value, including things like "Work Hard" over and over again.

My complaints for local hairstylists
For what the book taught hairstylists about cuts for round, and squared faces are totally wrong.If thte hair has to be styled to lift off the forehead, and come forward: All the hairstylists would do is leave bangs to the side of the client's face.Round faces should not have hair on top of hteir head.That is to crop up a spiky hairdo.To place some hair over the ears and cheeks is to make bangs on the side of the client's face.I have no idea what the editor meant by "keep the hair up on one side."I don't think round, and squared faces should have bangs at all.

If you have to take state boards this is the book you will need
This book makes certain that you have a good understanding of the material before you take your state boards and this is very important.You probably will not have the same questions on the test, or they may be phrased differently: but the book definatly covers each chapter well!

Comprehensive and Detailed
When I was taking Cosmetology back in the 2000-01 school year, they recommended to purchase this version of Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology. They were only available new in Canada and cost [money], and came with the theory book as well. Our teacher also had the old 1996 version of this textbook for sale, used. However, this is a better purchase. There are more pictures and colors, its not as drab as the previous version. I have to disagree with reviewers who said this is not a detailed book, I found it to be quite detailed and informative in its information. The book meant to be used in a classroom setting, where an instructor teachers and elaborates from this book. You cannot read this book and automatically cut hair, that is where the practical aspect of cosmetology comes in, when you are doing it hands on instead of reading. But this is a helpful tool for aspiring apprentices or students in cosmetology, whether you want to learn about Coloring, Perms, whatever the case, this is definately a worthwhile tool to have. ... A must read for teens, adults and parents!
Dr. Grandin has taken her knowledge, expertise and sensitivity one step further in Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. She offers many ideas for those affected by or those working with these individuals. This area is filled with people of talent who are underemployed. An example of one of the suggestions offered - an individual who is interested in cartoons and spends their days drawing - all day - being encouraged to go to a museum of cartooning, learning about different kinds of cartoons, the history of cartoons which expands their interest - meeting others with the same interest. It is not enough to have a talent or the intellectual ability to understand complex things. Without work, Dr. Grandin explains, her life would not have had order, content or meaning. She covers many different kinds of jobs that people on the autism spectrum can accommodate to and ones that would be more difficult for them. The book is well thought out and because Dr. Grandin is herself on the spectrum and spends so much of her time speaking to others at her many presentations she has analyzed a great deal of what works and what does not. This book is an absolute must read! I run a large group for parents, professionals and individuals and it is one of my first recommendations. This book gives concrete suggestions and hope.

As a parent of an Asperger teen, this book was confirming and enlightening
As a parent of a teenager with Aspergers, alot of Ms. Gradin's recommendations confirmed what I already thought: sell the skills not the personality, go into areas where your interests/fixations lie and consider working as a consultant in your area of expertise.Finding recommendations I already thought of didn't make me feel like those parts of the book were a waste.On the contrary, it is nice to have affirmation from an outside source, particularly one intimately knowledgable of autism.
Ways to use special interests for people with ASD/AS!
I have read all three of Temple Grandin's books. Each offers a different look at what it is like to experience Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). In "Developing Talents" Grandin provides the readers with insight into how parents and educators can assist people with High Functioning Autism/Asperger Syndrome (HFA/AS)achieve success. Read more

Excellent:Clear & Practical
GETTING PAST NO by William Ury is well written and will become a classic must-read if it is not already.The book is brief, easy-to-read yet is strinkingly powerful and useful.The primary benefit from reading this book is how pratical it is.You can use the tools, tactics, and concepts in this book in professional life, business or even to negotiate with friends.In summary, if you want to improve your ability to negotiate, you would be doing yourself a very big favor by acquiring a copy of this book.
One of the best books on negotiation
"Getting Past No" further elaborates on the ideas based on Ury's first book "Getting to Yes."I read it front to back, probably 4-5 times now and I take something new from it everytime.The best thing about this book is that it bridges the gap between negotiation models and conflict resolution books--something that I've seen very little of on the bookshelf.The techniques that Ury offers are not industry specific and can be applied to both business, professional, or interpersonal relationships.He also writes it in a very easy to understand format, with each chapter being a new step in the process.Ury is right on when he says that overcoming difficult people are one of the biggest obstacles in a negotiation and his approach is the benchmark that I have been using in my own teachings and in my own book.

Skip this book, buy Getting to Yes instead
I bought this book expecting to see a refinement or elaboration of the strategies explained in, "Getting to Yes!". I was extremely disapointed!

WOW Eye opening
After taking a detailed teleclass on interview training from an outplacement coach /resume writer (http://www.callfranklyspeaking.com), she recommended some further reading to make me an expert. I found this book to be really perfect after what I had learned. Straight and to the point.

Good read, but too rudimentary
One thing is for sure - if you really intend to start your own retail business, Retail Business Kit for Dummies will not take you far. It is very rudimentary, to say the least. My real disappointment is because of the CD that came with the book, supposedly full of useful forms, reports etc. They looked as if they were written with a typewriter.Anyway, regardless of your profile, I do not think that this book will help you open or run a successful retail business, nor significantly compliment your existing knowledge.
A must read for the beginner

Great for basics, too general for experienced marketers

easy to follow
I think the CD included with this book is a marvelous tool for the facilitator.The powerpoint and overhead slide presentations on the CD give you training programs for two days, one day, half day or one hour.The book itself walks you through step by step on how to design an effective training program.This is simple enough to follow for even the novice trainer, yet it is comprehensive enough to meet a seasoned trainers needs. Even if you're not close to $100k, the book gives you valuable insight into that realm. How to Write a Proposal That's Accepted Every Time - You Need This Book!
I purchased this book earlier this year.While we don't often submit written proposals, we used the techniques to close over $200,000 in business in the first few months.
It worked the FIRST TIME I used it
While I do not often submit many written proposals, since most of my negotiation is done over the phone or in person, the few written proposals I have been required to sumbit were accepted every time!The key was following the advice provided in this book.
Not at all worth the price
Thank goodness my company paid for this book.In no way is it worth more than $100.Consideringing that every other page is a notes page, you effectively get a 60-page book.Exclude the related information (ex: sales questions, presentation tips) and maybe 15 pages of this book actually relate to writing a proposal.I have read most of the books out there on developing proposals and any of them are better than this one at helping you develop a proposal.And they cost a tenth as much. ... Great for eLearning Designers and Reviewers
With many years of experience in building eLearning and educational software I was looking for a reference to back up my "I know it when I see it" thoughts on good and bad courseware. This book met or exceeded my expectations. I like that the chapters are shorter and that the observations are backed up with study results. The References section is a valuable collection of eLearning studies in itself. There are also useful checklists included with the book.
A book that every person in this field need to use

Excellent practical book for practitioners

Excellent resource!
I bought this after working for the federal government for 20 years!I was looking for a position after the agency I work for within the Department of Defense was BRAC'd.I needed some serious help in the KSA writing department.This book helped me tremendously.I breezed through the KSAs after reading what government managers are looking for in an applicant's KSA.Well worth the money.Oh, and I did get the job!

Federal Resume Guidebook
I have this book as well as Ten Steps to a Federal Job.What a lifesaver.Who knew all the detail needed to get a federal job!These books are easy to digest, easy to follow, then they become a resource that I have used repeatedly.These books will take the fear out of the application process.In addition, a time saver is the "free" access to templates to help build the necessary documents. I used the template, and had a problem (turned out to be AOL as the problem).At 8am I wrote an email using the "contact us" tab on the web site the templates are located on.With-in fifteen minutes, the author herself (Kathryn K. Troutman) emailed me back and stayed with me until the issue was resolved.A short time later a technical support person contacted me by phone to make sure things were resolved.If that was not lightning fast, I do not know what is.A person whom I did not know recommended these books to me, now I am telling everyone I know (and don't know) about them!
