definitely worth the money
this is one of the few books that offers practical advice on finding a job in the cg industry. besides the standard topics like putting together a resume and interviewing tips, it tells you what skills you need to build in order to be successful at different career paths (modeler vs rigger vs compositor, etc.) i also found the interviews with various people who already work in the industry very informative. ... Good Information if Redundant at Times
I will say that this book definitely has a lot of useful information for those people (like me) who are still in the process of obtaining an education and/or training.Additionally, there is a lot of useful information for people who have been in the game industry for a few years.My main problems with the book concern the numerous grammatical errors and redundant statements.I know this doesn't chiefly concern the content of the book; however, it is just kind of frustrating that at least 3 times I remember reading subsequent paragraphs that started with the same sentence or idea.It literally looks like he made two versions of the same paragraph and forgot to take the other one out!Additionally, as others have said, his job seeking tactics seem exceedingly aggressive in my opinion.Now he obviously has more experience than me. I just feel that some of the advice is over the top.I will give him credit though for forcing me to realize the opportunities available when you really really work at self-promotion.I have no problem recommending this book to others, but if you are a grammar freak like me you may have to take some deep breaths and relax before diving into it :)

PLEASE, BUY THIS BOOK!
Ok, first off. If you want to get in to the games industry then buy this book. If you dont then you are just cheating yourself. I have learnt more from this book than all the other design books conbined. While most books seem reasonably happy to bombard you with complicated and confusing infomation, this book presents every topic very clear and concise. It takes you through all the areas of game development with great detail yet acknowledges that you are new to a lot of things and does its very best to give you a good understanding. Before reading this book I was very unclear on a lot of industry related infomation. But not now thanks to Marc Mencher acting as my personal tutor page after page. Finally I have a structured plan on how I am going to break in to the industry. Before reading Get In The Game I really had no idea of how I was going to get in to my dream job. Now however I have a great understanding of what I have to learn and everything I need to do. I now have a great degree of confidence and with Marc Mencher's advice I have began networking. I really can not think of anything negative to say about this book. Ok, so the resume section could of been a little better executed but it was there to teach you how to put together a good resume and thats what its done. On top of all that it has a very useful resource catalogue. Please for your own benefit buy this book. It will really help you. I cannot thank Marc enough for putting together this fantastic book.

Read this to understand programmers
I have to say, this is a great book, almost unique in its scope; I wish there were more books like this. There are many collections of short biographies of mathematicians, and a few of computer scientists, but that's not quite the same as programmers. If you want to know what programmers do, the best thing is to read their code, but failing that (or in addition to that) you need to read interviews like this. I wish someone would do another book like this covering programmers of the last 15 years, but this one has a very good selection of programmers from the early PC era, and the interviews are very well-done: they let the programmer speak, yet the interviewer keeps them on track.

Wish I bought this book sooner!
I am finishing up by degree in Graphic Communications in December. I checked this book out of our school library and didn't want to give it back...so I bought my own! What I love about this book is that it breaks it down by industry and specialty area. I also like the way it breaks down what you should include in your portfolio for those areas. It is nice knowing that there is more to Graphic Design than just being a Graphic Artist in a print shop or a newspaper. This book gives you an idea and an overview on what's out there. Awesome!

Book implies college CS students are idiots.
Unfortunately Liberty comes across with a chip on his shoulder against formal college education in this book. Statements like some of the best programmers he knows are "taxi drivers and psychologists" and former university training mainly teaches students to operate "mainframes". In the Introduction it says "According to a study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, by the year 2005 there will be over two million new jobs for software professionals!" which fails to mention most of the jobs will be overseas easily outsourced as making tennis shoes. Otherwise, Liberty still shows his expertise and there are good sections on advice for interviewing and resume writing. But in the end as an idiot, I wished I had majored in engineering instead of computer science especially when 90% of my undergraduate computer science student body were graduate students from the eastern side of the world.

A really great book!
I think this book is the best choice for peaple who are wanting to learn how to program but don't know where to start. It doesn't teach you how to program in a specific language, but it shows you the basic thing of lots of languages. It has lots of book and magazine suggestions also. This book is very easy to understand. Although you might not agree with what Jesse Liberty is suggesting for your career, it's a great book.

Decent introduction but don't take his advice to heart
A more appropriate title for this book would have been "An Introduction to the Field of Computer Programming." It's an excellent read for someone interesting in understanding what computer programming is about. It is not, as the author claims, a guide to building a career as a programmer. Read more

Another Good Interview Guide
This is another good book in the Job Interview series from Rampant.As with the other books, this book gives both the employer and the candidate guidance in areas such as work experience, personal appearance and education.
too general to be useful
The advice on interviewing is very general and can be found to the same detail with google. The advice is all useful, but it's not worth the price and the style is a little goofy for what I expected to be a more professional book.
Rigidly conventional
This book is full of uptight opinions and puts the job candidate under the magnifying glass. It is almost impossible to please the author. You have to wear a bussiness suit(only white shirt is acceptable), if you don't, you may be considered disrespectful. Knowing the klingon language may indicate a personality disorder!! Let's get serious.

A Must Read for IT Professionals
I read this book and thought to myself, this book describes me perfectly.If you're in the IT industry and feel as though you're drowning in an ever changing IT environment. Trying to update your skills and keep up with the pace of technology.Then Jacquie's book is a must read. The "Sound Bytes" are relevant, practical, and enlightening.Her wisdom and guidance on topics from technologies, to career tracks, to resumes are outstanding.I highly recommend acquiring a copy of this book.

Enjoyable and Informative
This is a great read!It's jammed with practical pointers, some of which you might think are common sense, but never really thought about. When the time comes for you to ponder career decisions, having read this book will be a real timesaver.

How to become a corp. programmer - 20 years ago
I'm almost angry at how bad this book is. Most of the advice is dated from mainframe days, and the rest is just wrong and following it will get you fired. Chapters tend to be short (3-4 pages) and consist mostly of stories from his friends, which aren't always developed past the telling of the story.
The Inside Scoop on the Business World
An awful lot of the best programmers I've ever met are true geniuses. Unfortunately the genius aspect only goes so far as to programming. Many of then have "discovered" that late in high school or early in college they know more than their professors and quite school to get a programming job that pays a lot more than flipping burgers.
Neophytes Keep Away! This book is dangerous, seriously.
Although the author of this book has over forty years of experience at all levels of corporate programming (from programmer to developer to consultant to company owner), I can not recommend this book to anyone. While the author provides excellent advice on many topics, the items on which he is blatantly wrong are VERY dangerous for anyone follow, especially those new to the field.

Tedious, boring and insulting.
There is really nothing to this book. When I finally finished it I was like "That was it?" Aside from the lack of any kind of interesting or engaging plot I found the very stereotypical charicterizations of programmers to be insulting. I get the feeling that the author is one of those "non-geek" programmers who (incorrectly) thinks that she understands true geek culture and secretly thinks she is better than the geeks.

An intimate "The Soul of a New Machine"
Ellen Ullmann has created a wonderful novel about the awkward interfaces between programmers and users, programming and aging, and technology and humanity. Some pros, but mostly cons
Ellen Ullman is obviously an adept coder and is able to describe both the great highs and great lows of being "close to the machine". However, as an actual author, she's a bit tedious and occasionally eye-rollingly vapid: her surprisingly generic sex scenes seem like quick masturbatory breaks, almost as if she felt the need to remind us that "programmers have sex lives, too". And she shows some occasional touches of her own techno-fear, especially when disparaging the nomenclature on a web-browser's interface (she pooh-poohs the usage of "home" on the browser, apparenly forgetting that "home" has also been the traditional name for users' directories on UNIX systems). Probably a good head-nodding read for legacy techies, the post-web generation will most likely sigh "Oh, get OVER yourself" a few times before flinging this one across the room and going back to reading WIRED. ... Like a good wine, Improves with age
I bought this book march 2000, Read it, thought it was OK , left it on my shelf. 5 Years later I was going to discard it from my collection. opened it up and was surprised at the wealth of information in it and how closely it matches my own experience and philospohy. It is a mine of good information. Not a book to read front to back but to explore, it reads better than most web and magazine articles. If you can get one on the used market its worth 50cents of anyones money. i would say its time for a revised edition.

Not exactly Yourdon's best book
While Yourdon's "Death March" wasn't another "Mythical Man-Month" by any measure, "Rise" is yet in another (much lower) class. Does Yourdon want to become a true industry pundit? Ed, your style is too clear for that; and you're writing in harback format, which doesn't blissfully disappear like all these magazines. He shouldn't have changed his mind.
Although I haven't yet finished this book I can't help but feel that he was closer to the mark with his first book.In the last three years many foreign countries have been ramping up the amount of software developmentthey do for American (and European) clients.Local software developerscannot compete on cost, so they must compete either on innovation orquality.They're not making it on quality and innovations can only takeyou so far. ...
