4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source
An amazing book detailing the differences between global, international, and multinational companies while providing a new innovative way to approach business, the transnational way. Great for students and professionals alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars An appreciative book that looks forward into the future
Now in an updated second edition, Managing Across Borders: The Transnational Solution by Christopher Bartlett (Daewoo Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School) and Sumantra Ghoshal (Professor of Strategic and International Management, The London Business School) is an informative introduction to the "transnational corporation", the new corporate phenomena of the interconnected global and digital age, which stretches its competition worldwide and fundamentally rewrites the nature of doing business. A fascinating, appreciative book that looks forward into the future, Managing Across Borders is highly recommended reading for anyone seeking to understand and capitalize on what the 21st century business community is evolving for purposes of international trade in a truly global and increasingly "borderless" age!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pathbreaking book
This seminal book has been a part of my professional library for almost a decade, now. I am an Associate Professor in International Business and teach the subjects covered in this book. From this book a number ofconcepts have grown which continues to dominate the discussion of globalmanagement. Let me jus mention a few: administrative heritage, which is theidea, that the organisational structure of multidomestic enterprisesreflects the historical period they were established in - especially withrespect to the regime of coordination and communication. For instance, whereas the typical american firm entering Europe after 2ww would follow astrategy of tight operational control (given the business circumstances ofthis firm) Phillips, a multinational from the 19th century would display astrategy of much more delegation and subsidary autonomy.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic, in the HBR style
This book is a must-have for any manager's bookshelf. It delves into a topic cited widely in management literature, but seldom covered in depth.
5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening read
Although I am not 100% on board with Pfeffer, he sure did get me thinking about how to recognize behaviors that may be related to power. He also gives excellent (although dated) real-life examples of how leaders used and failed to use politics, and the results of each. If you think politics in organizations stinks, read this book to get a different take. You may just discover some tools that will help you help others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Social Capital is the leading edge for HR measurement- pay attention
The Information Age has put a premium on ideas and intellectual capital is more valuable today than ever.Knowledge has always resided within organizations, therefore the very sought after intellectual capital is a critical resource that resides within the employees of a company.Although these employees possess intellectual capital, with the emergence of technology, globalization, and the rise of free agency, another resource has emerged: social capital. This social capital is made-up of human connections, such as trust, networks, and a sense of community. In this book the authors share how to:

This is a good and helpful read. While Cohen and Prusak do tend to say a lot of things that one has a gut feeling of but has never read or heard someone say aloud about working relationships, some of it was really fascinating. They have a particularly interesting chapter on chat and storytelling and the functions those activities serve at work. The theme of the book is that organizations should invest in social capital the way they invest in other kinds of capital, but that such investments can't be faked. Workers know when the love is real, so to speak. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even More Relevant and More Valuable Today

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Remember when you were a youthful entrepreneur operating a neighborhood lemonade stand? If author Michael E. Porter had walked up to buy a cup of punch from you, he probably would have asked about your business strategy. While you poured, he would have questioned what made your lemonade different from anyone else's. If he liked your lemonade, he'd no doubt give you suggestions on how to earn millions competing in the global marketplace. Ah, if only you had listened... The author, America's dean of competition, has spent two decades asking seminal questions such as, "What is competition? What are its effects? How can society benefit?" The Harvard Business Review previously published 11 of the 13 articles collected in this book. In the two new essays, Porter serves up invaluable concepts. His take on the growing importance of location, despite rising globalization, is a tour de force. Oddly, Porter sees no inconsistency in encouraging "productive competition" in the health care industry while advocating universal health care. For Porter, competition is the ingredient that turns lemons into lemonade. We recommend his latest book to any corporate strategist who seeks ideas on becoming more competitive, starting in your own neighborhood.

This book is a collection of essays and articles by Michael Porter alone or with others. Most of them are collected from his writings in the Harvard Business Review although two are new to this book.Think of this as a "Porter's Greatest Hits" kind of thing. That is a bit misleading because his HBR articles are not exactly the same thing as his Competitive Advantage books although the topics are definitely related.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but interesting for what it leaves out.
The thematic collections of articles from the Harvard Business Review are clearly popular enough to justify more. This one is on globalisation and its implications. As ever, the articles selected are well organised, with a useful short introduction.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons of Globalization!
I am impressed on Garten's and his contributor writers telling MNCs past lessons trying to penetrate into Asia's markets in India and China. I find it interesting especially local companies tried to sort strategies since there are no longer consider as monopoly to counter-attack before they enter the market! This will give local producers to be much more competitive than before. Eventually, they repaired their reputation and efficient production and service than before!MNCs need to worry much especially they don't understand the Asian culture and taste! It may be a suicide mission if MNCs don't study the culture and the background of the country! Although the population in India and China approxed 2.2 billion doesn't mean that it is a 100% peneteration! These may find on Part 1: Emerging Markets and Part 2: Europe and Asia This book is highly recommended to Asian Small-Medium Entrepreneurship and asian big corporate companies as it is important to know how much competitive market as the world trade tariff walls declined! It is undoubtfully an excellent book!

"Gary Hamel is one of the brightest corporate strategist on the planet. And C.K. Prahalad is a brilliant business mind from the University of Michigan. Together, they have produced a profound book that will revitalize many companies. Those firms and organizations that ignore the new strategic architecture will be like `the deer caught in the headlights'... they will be doomed like many of the companies that have already disappeared from the ranks of the Fortune 1000."

4-0 out of 5 stars A perennial favorite that still packs a punch
This perennial favorite is now ten years old. While some of its specific examples have aged and its basic message around core competencies and numerator growth rather than denominator reduction have passed into common business parlance, it is still a solid read that has much to offer.Every businessperson has to decide what his or her company is going to do, how it is going to do it, and what its future course will be.This is a surprisingly complex task and it is all too easy to make the wrong steps simply because they seem safe, pragmatic, and obvious.

John Hagel is a Senior Advisor at McKinsey & Company. For two decades, John Seely Brown was Executive Director of the legendary Palo Alto Research Center. The authors argue that the only sustainable edge is to generate shareholder value through constant innovation.Current approaches to strategic thinking are inadequate to the task.
1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to read
The book is extremely poorly written.Very difficult to read. The ideas are not new.Don't buy it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good analysis but limited examples
Not being a specialist in business strategy I thought there was a lot of great material with excellent insights and analysis in this book, but I would have liked to see more examples or case studies that supported their views. I was suprised that after a slow start the sections on dynamic specialization and productive friction were brilliant and I think even surpass Clayton Christenson's anaylsis of the mechanisms of innovation inside corporate cultures.

5-0 out of 5 stars In China, do as Chinese do
I am a vice president of leading Korean telecom company with 5 years investing experience in China. What Donald mentions in his book is quite true based on my own experience. China is a booming market with huge opportunities in all industries, but it also gets its particular rules to play in these fields. Some rule can be adopted in all industries; the others are special on different sectors. Donald's research uncovers the miracles in four leading industries, and offers us rich information. Especially, his opinion on telecommunication industry is quite correct and useful. The findings of Donald's book also offer good guidance to my work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn from Chinese entrepreneurs even though China is lack of good entrepreneurs
China is lack of good entrepreneurs. But more and more good entrepreneurs are coming out along with the growth of Chinese companies.
1-0 out of 5 stars Another 'FAILED' study about Chinese entrepreneurs
This book is only suitable for executives who believe that the business environment in China is still unpredictable. Sull intends to study a sample of entrepreneurs and companies in China in order to illustrate effective strategies that entrepreneurs might use while managing in unpredictable markets.

1-0 out of 5 stars What Happened to IBM?
This book presents one viewpoint on IBM during the 1980s and 1990s. The authors claim that a choice of IBM "could not be faulted" (p.9). [Was that because IBM, unlike some competitors, did not offer kickbacks to customers?] The authors claim IBM broke its promises of high-quality technology and excellent service to customers, and job security to its employees. But no company can guarantee jobs when losing money. Read more
