3-0 out of 5 stars Very sentimental but still worthwhile
This tape was my first experience of the Chicken Soup series. I had heard of Mark Victor Hansen from the One Minute Millionaire book.5-0 out of 5 stars Nice, Inspiring little book
Nice, inspiring little book.I work for an elected official who is a tyrant.I wish I'd seen this book 3 yrs ago! But, fortunately, it's cheered me up enough to get through the next 2 months as he was just defeated in his bid for re-election.(Yippeee!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put this book down
I noticed this book at the airport bookstore and picked it up. I couldn't put the book down as I read one touching story after the other. It'sa great colletion of stories to inspire us to add "heart" to the workplace. Kudos to all the authors. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Emergenetics
Its great on theory, its demonstrate we as individual are a complex being and our profile is seasonal. The main reason I bought the book is to find out about my profile and disappointed not finding any starter or basic self help tool kit in the book other than visiting the book website and an additional payment of $100 is needed before result can be delivered to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Insightful! There would be less misunderstandings in the world if everyone knew everyone else's profile!
I found this book very interesting. It is about what the author describes as the 4 thinking attributes (Social, Conceptual, Analytical and Structural) and 3 behavioral attributes (Expressiveness, Assertivess and Flexibility), how to identify attributes in people and yourself, how you can interact with others based on others attributes, how to make better decisions and how to create and work in great teams (among other things).
4-0 out of 5 stars Practical guide to effective team managment at the work place
Despite its clumsy name, Geil Browining's Emergenetics, offers practical and pragmatic advice on how to assess one's thinking and behavioral preferences on seven useful dimensions. Analytical, Structural, Conceptual and Social cover the thinking preferences and Expressiveness, Assertiveness and Flexibility cover the behavioral preferences. Emergenetics is the practice of developing thinking and behavior profiles on hundreds of thousands of individuals, analyzing these profiles for general understanding of individuals and groups and applying them to the improvement of personal and team effectiveness. Although the book doesn't discuss how profiles are generated, there is enough material to provide useful guidance to the reader in identifying and assessing these preferences in yourself and others. ... Editorial Review

If you're in charge of putting together or overseeing a work team, butyou can't bring yourself to crack those gazillion-pound guides or weightyworkbooks that you've been handed to help you, you'll love this nifty palm-sizecompanion to every aspect of leading the crew. Here, you'll learn not only whatmakes a good team and how to balance individual skills within a team, but alsohow to set the whole thing up (from setting goals and establishing trust tocreating a self-managed team, or taking on an existing one), improve itsefficiency (by facilitating improved communication, running meetings, improvingteam standards, and getting everyone to deal with problems and thinkcreatively), and ensure team success in the future through measuring teamperformance and tracking its progress, setting and meeting targets, rewardinggood work, and adapting to change. On every snazzy little page, boxed tips, handy checklists, mini case studies, and easy-to-follow flow charts bring thewhole team-leading process to life--from inception to long-term operation andplanning. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, youmight find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But, if you'relooking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do just fine.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A necessity for every contemporary manager
As atrainer, this is my advice; read it, distribute it to your organizational managers-it makes for a great gift by the way, then discuss it with them in groups or indvidually. Only then you can convert your groups into real teams.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Book for Managing Teams.
"Managing Teams" by Robert Heller is a very informative book and definitely should be read by new managers. This book contains many different ideas on how to manage your team. Heller brings up important points that many new managers may not be aware of when first starting into the challenging world of team managing.Heller discusses several different topics including `Understanding How Teams Work,' Setting Up A Team,' `Improving Team Efficiency,' and `Working For The Future.' Each of these chapters cover important topics that are broken down into easy to understand summarized sections. This book helps you determine the right people for a team, and how to form a multi- talented, functioning team. You will also learn how to motivate your team to complete the goals that they were brought together to achieve. Learning to manage a team can sometimes be a difficult transition if you are not used to doing so, but Heller's book can really help you to adjust to the position.4-0 out of 5 stars Well-organized, brief, and covers key points
I'd recommend this to anyone who's part of a team and wants a brief, concise, useful summary of key points that help you better manage (and bepart of) a team. Sections are well organized, and actual techniques aredescribed that you can use to improve.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good intro to diversity in organizations
I have used this as a supplement to a textbook in a class on industrial organization psychology. Just about every student finds it helpful and sees it as a fresh perspective on diversity. It sets a tone for thoughtful discussions on diversity through the semester.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that pulls it all together
Cheers to Dr. Thomas for providing a book that is one of the first -- in my opinion -- to present a clear picture of the need to address workforce, workplace and marketplace diversity. I came away understanding that to address one or two of these components without addressing the third is like commissioning a two to three mile dig, when all the geological reports tell you that oil is six miles down. Half and quarter steps will not lead to success. In the most simple straight-forward way, starting with a powerful parable, Dr. Thomas drives home the point that for true strategic benefits organizations need to make a balance commitment to the all three components.2-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Reflection of Limits on Diversity-Thinking
I anxiously looked forward to reading this book.Given the titles of Thomas's previous books, Redefining Diversity and Beyond Race and Gender, and the title of this one I expected more than passing reference to the disability community.I was disappointed.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dry, but informative
I'm not sure how attention grabbing org theory can be, but this book was very informative and understandable. The chapters are a nice size, and the summaries are useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doctoral research material
Hatch writes in a consise and informative manner. It is not the type of writing that you wonder what you just read. Her writing holds the reader's interest by keeping her style uncomplicated in word and thought. The breath of orgainzational information is outstanding and the depth of each topic seems to be at a level to keep you reading but not overloaded and bored. Highly recommended for org research.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to look at organizations?
The book is an academic level state-of-the-art of organization theory. Definitely the best contemporary book in the field - suitable for all the students, but also for academics and practitioners. It covers both historical and current issues. Though pretty comprehesive, still comprehendable. In lay man language Hatch writes about most difficult issues of organization theory - structure, environment, culture, etc. are all covered, usually with some alternative perspectives (e.g. 'organizational culture' is described also from postmodern and symbolic perspectives, current books and papers are referred etc.). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extreme project management is a complete misnomer here!!
What DeCarlo describes is not in any way an extreme project management approach but a common sense process of dealing with the insanity of the expectations for many contemporary projects. DeCarlo has great insight and sound advice on how people and processes must adapt to the business and technical requirements of modern projects.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, timely and a new addition to your permanent reference shelf
This excellent book dramatically advances the start-of-the-art in agile project management. It goes well beyond any other book on the subject, covering such new ground as how to work with stakeholders, how to assess whether projects are worth doing, how to create a useful plan, and how to work with senior management.
4-0 out of 5 stars Better than most, relates well to non-technical projects too
There is little I can add to the positive reviews of this book. Most of these works focus on the usual elements and concerns, with more or less emphasis the various aspects of successful project management. It's worth pointing out, though, that this is one of the rare books that also applies to projects undertaken outside the realm of the purely technical fields.

5-0 out of 5 stars a femenist perspective, but superlative work
The problem with sociology of gender is that the work seems to be dominated by a femenist perspective, instead of a value nuetral perspective. However, the field of gender sociology has been covered more assiduously (and thus remains more valid and relevant)then many other fields of sociology.

I can not comment on a book that I have not received yet!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a new facilitator; Good review for experienced facilitators
This book is a good tool for new facilitators.Provides good instructions and guides that will help in organizing meetings and developing facilitation plans. For the experienced facilitator, it provides helpful reminders and useful checklists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Facilitation course members love this book
I teach a master's level course in facilitation and team dynamics.Justice and Jamieson is by far the most useful and popular book in that course.Students use it heavily in designing facilitation processes during the course, and I hear them recommending to others that they KEEP their J&J handy because they'll continue to use it.Especially helpful:the quick overviews of group dynamics, overt/covert issues, team member roles, leadership processes. It helps to provide this background knowledge for the students. The options and explanations list many more choices and rationales than usually seen in a book like this.Examples:multiple approaches to brainstorming, agenda development, session evaluation, interventions to manage conflict, etc. J&J's second edition (if there is one) could be a little slicker, but you wouldn't have to change much content except perhaps to have an added section on virtual facilitation.Enjoy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The exploitation of gender for profit
"Genders in Production" by Leslie Salzinger is a groundbreaking study about production processes in Mexico's maquiladoras. This fascinating book should appeal to academics, feminists, labor activists and others who may be interested in learning about the dynamic processes by which globalization exploits gender for profit. Importantly, Ms. Salzinger's keen insight and analysis helps open the door to imagining a world where gender stereotypes could be transcended and labor rights accorded more respect.

4-0 out of 5 stars A hard read
First let me begin by saying that this is an interesting read. You basically learn about domestic workers (live in nannies, home cleaners). In Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo's Domstica: Immigrant Workers Cleaning and Caring in the Shadow of Affluence, readers explore, along with the researcher, an oft overlooked element of domestic labour in America. In examining this particular manifestation between the haves and have little, Hondagneu-Sotelo has provided a "scholarly" treatment where Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed fell short. This is by no means an indictment of Ehrenreich's work, quite the contrary.Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed is approachable by the many levels of readers that seek to understand the phenomenon of the working poor and their interaction with affluent Americans (here, I speak specifically of Ehrenreich's chapter two titled "Scrubbing in Maine").However, in Domstica, Hondagneu-Sotelo has opted to focus her research on immigrant domestic workers, specifically Mexican and Central American women in Los Angeles. In so doing, her research provides insight into the minds and worlds of both parties who engage in what can easily be termed a "love hate" relationship; one where, out of necessity, both the employer and employees are in need of one another. In addition, Domstica serves to highlight some of the struggles of members of America's largest "minority" population (be they documented or otherwise). While Hondagneu-Sotelo relegates her analysis and interviews to women in the Los Angeles area, this reviewer is of the opinion that her research may well be duplicated in other cities with similar populations and yield like outcomes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for OD, HR and all managers
This is one of my all-time favorite management/OD books. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in learning how to improve manager-employee relationships, trust, and communication in organizations. I think it should be on the bookshelf of every Organization Development specialist, Human Resource manager, executive coach, and leadership trainer. It contains useful, thoughtful, and often unique advice for managers, team members, trainers, and anyone else interested in reducing the climate of fear in their workplace. Some of the ideas translate well to personal and family relationships too.5-0 out of 5 stars A vision for high-trust and high performance organization
"Our work on this topic has been inspired primarily by personal consulting experiences over many years...Ten years ago, these experiences confirmed the teachings of W.Edwards Deming and others involved with continuous quality improvement. Deming asserted in his fourteen obligations of managment that quality was impossible where people are afraid to tell the truth...Besides Dming, other voices strongly reinforce the need to understand the dynamics and effects of fear. Chris Argyris's extensive body of work clarifies how invisible and self-reinforcing miscommunication due to fear can be. Peter Senge's explorations of systems thinking illuminate its far-reaching effects. Both of these thinkers underscore the need to understand the negative assumptions about people that keep fear in place. Peter Block's works on empowerment and stewardship demand a wholesale rethinking of the concepts of management and leadership as a way to escape thses destructive beliefs. Most recently, Thomas Stewart's examination of the rapidly emerging value of intellectual capital demands that even more attention be paid to reducing fear and building trust" (from the Preface).5-0 out of 5 stars Making the quantum leap from fear to trust.

5-0 out of 5 stars TOXIC COWORKERS - A MUST-HAVE IF YOU WORK
This book is absolutely the best guide I have seen for helping a working person deal with those people who just can't be dealt with at work.It goes into detail about Personality Disorder characteristics and how to deal with people who have a personality disorder, from the prospective of the co-worker, manager, and subordinate. It also covers other types of mental problems in addition to personality disorders. It really helped me in the area of giving real background information and vocabulary in order for me to let my manager know exactly what one of my subordinates was like.It gave a me a good handle on how best to deal with this "toxic co-worker".Even though I am not able to keep his problem from negatively impacting the work area completely, at least I have the peace of mind that it is his problem and not my imagination running wild!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good inventory of disorders...
...as they manifest themselves at the office. You'll definitely see some of the traits and behaviors described in the people you're working with. But... when it comes to coping with these types, as the title promises, I found the book short on practical methods for dealing with problem people. In some cases, the books states there's little or nothing that can be done about jerks on the job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dealing with Dysfunctional Coworkers
This easily and quickly read book should be helpful to the reader who struggles with a boss, coworker or subordinate. In almost every workplace, there is one person whose behavior generates more negative attention than most others around him (or her). The toxic coworker we all experience at one time or another already has a gun; while we can't change that person, we certainly want to avoid giving her any bullets.Toxic Coworkers can help you understand that person and take appropriate actions that will not contribute further to the time- and attention-consuming behaviors that seem to make everyone around her miserable.
