5-0 out of 5 stars an epic of America--
This is a fascinating book.Filled with brief, antecdotal stories of people narrowing down their lives to reflections on their jobs, the very souls of many of these people shine through.People good and bad, generous and selfish, greedy, self-absorbed, charitable and open-hearted, Terkel has captured more than just an historical document chronicling the present-past-tense viewpoints of a handful of citizens, but has exposed a universal understanding of differences of opinion throughout the nation.People speak, sometimes angry, often full of regret and a sense of meaninglessness or loss, and they tell the story of human aspiration and dreams. For all the increasingly irrelevent references to issues and phenomenon of the early 1970s, for every comment on times gone by dimming increasingly into the past, there remains a profound relevence for every civilization to come (and no doubt every one that preceded the subjects) regarding the very search for meaning in our lives.
5-0 out of 5 stars MAGNUM OPUS!!
Studs Terkel wanted to write a book about working for a living. So he sat down with a grocery store cashier and interviewed her about her job. He didn't ask very many questions; he just turned on a tape recorder and let her pour her heart out. She explained what she did for a living, how and why she came to do it, what she liked and disliked about her job. She talked about the little dramas and boredom that filled her working hours and the toll it took on her private life. When she was finished talking she had created a vivid "snapshot" with words of what it's like to work as a grocery store cashier.
5-0 out of 5 stars The dreams and experiences of ordinary working folk
Labor history students will easily recall Studs Terkel's Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day And How They Feel About What They Do to be a landmark charting the dreams and experiences of ordinary working folk: add a new foreword by Adam Cohen of the New York Times to Terkel's classic and you return an important reference to modern times, with over a hundred interviews with working folk as relevant today as when it was first done.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bully at Work: What You Can Do to Stop the Hurt and Reclaim Your Dignity on the Job
The book puts ones personal experiences into words that make you feel and understand the trauma that has taken place. The author offers wonderful ways to become whole again in your work and personal lives.
5-0 out of 5 stars much needed
any book on the topic is much needed. i have had my life completely ruined, and not worth living because of this. bullies? how about when a group starts by calling you incompetent, talking loudly so that you can't concentrate, refusing to help you learn a new job, then progresses to showing pornography to your coworkers, following you, tapping your email, tapping your phone, breaking into your house and car.... so you get a new job, and guess what? they had friends there- so everyone is told you were not really qualified, you lie about everything (in case you try to tell anyone about anything), so everyone is told the same crap as in place A, as well as a heap of outright fabrications- lets try that you threated to sue the company for starters, then toss in some breaking into your email, changing your work so that it makes no sense, having everyone that passes by or near you make loud comments about you, tell everyone that you have said bad stuff about them. Then follow the person around. Break into their house, car, phone lines. Don't stop when they are out of a job- ruin their personal business- keep pushing and try to get them chased off the whole planet. Hide behind trees and shoot off fireworks when they emerge. Send lots of emails saying they will be shot (as if they would care at that point). Put scorpions in their bed- nice touch eh? Ruin their air conditioner. Heck, even kill their pets. Break into all of their computer accounts and send lots of email about 'Get Life Insurance Now' and the like. Tell all their neighbors they are crazy, immoral, whatever it takes to piss them all off. It does seem in fact like a really fun game for a group to play. It must be- it has to give them lots of laughs or why else would people risk losing THEIR job, reputation, and even a jail sentence to ruin someone else's life, just because they don't like that person, or a friend does not like that person, is almost unbelieable. And for heaven's sake don't give their spouse a clue as to what is really happening, ruining an already very difficult marriage and a couple of kids is kind of like getting bonus points playing pinball. Why do people do it? Because they usually are people who have worked at a company quite a while, or want desperately to fit into the 'in' crowd. And the long-termers too many times think it is THEIR company and people that do not fit in with THEM should NOT work there. Or live in their neighborhood if they should be so lucky. Of course, the company may be loosing LOTS of money since their people are not only not doing the jobs they are paid to do by spending all of their time doing in their co-workers, and of course they are deliberately ruining their coworkers jobs so you can nix them for getting any work done either. I can in fact see how some of my mannerisms make people not like me. Especially when I am nervous or trying desperately to prove I deserve a chance. But I would not do to a cockroach what bullies have done to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Career & Life Saver (If you are a Target)
This book reveals the truth in life and how life can be unfair for the good in heart. Bullying is real and is spread across international borders affecting almost every aspect of life, it starts from childhood and leaves us vulnerable throughout. What makes a "bully" and a "Target" indead starts from childhood. Both are created by dysfunctional families, unfortunately. A healthy family, on the other hand, creates an individual who is strong minded, balanced and understanding, neither a "bully" nor a "Target".

2-0 out of 5 stars a step in the right direction
This is a serious academic look by a number of respected authorities on the idea of shared leadership within teams. Its main merit is that it recognizes that executives cannot provide all the leadership that teams need in a complex, fast changing, knowledge driven world. But, we have had the concept of informal leadership for decades now, so shared leadership is really little more than a new name for an old idea. Indeed, their concept, like informal leadership, sounds a lot like shared management. Too bad we can't agree on how management and leadership differ as this confusion is infecting all our efforts to develop new ideas about leadership, ideas we badly need for the reasons Conger and Pearce rightly state - increasing complexity and pace of change.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new angle to explore ways to create value in organizations
In an era caracterized by innovation and changes in organizations, and where complex decisions must be made collectively based on a combination of know-hows, leadership cannot remain soley in the hands of top-leaders but must be shared at all levels. Should you be looking for ways to improve productivity at all levels in your organization and the best strategies to retain and further develop your competent workforce to achieve the value creation you are aiming at for all your stakeholders, this book is for you. It provides you with the current best stragegies and tools to achieve employees' involvement at all levels.Shared Leadership is a concept which puts emphasis on peers' lateral influence in a team. Everything you need to be successful in the workplace!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for new and established coaches
This book is a remarkably comprehensive resource for coaches. This great book examines the nature of change as well as the role of the coach as a change agent. It clearly articulates the stages of the coaching process. There is a wealth of assessments, profiles and numerous practical coaching tools. The authors (internationally renowned coach trainers) also discuss the role of the coach's personality, coaching techniques and how to use them range from self-awareness exercises, problem-solving techniques and journalling. It is research-based, thorough and very readable. Highly recommended!.

3-0 out of 5 stars goodbasic overview of simple coaching approaches
This a useful book which - although not a complete "toolkit" by any means - does provide a useful overview, and the beginning coach will find this helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ground-breaking reference book!
The 'Toolkit' is a highly professional, yet easy-to-understand reference book and includes a complete and very helpful glossary. The authors are the most respected coaching educators in the business world today. The professional coaching industry has evolved dramatically over the last two years and bears little resemblance to its fuzzy predecessor of the nineties. A lot of serious research and work has gone into this groundbreaking text book, and serious personal and organizational change can come from the use of the book. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Contribution to Spirituality Research
This book is the result of research conducted by the authors across various profit and non-profit organizations in the U.S. The book does contribute to the body of research considering spirituality in the workplace. The field is still young from an academic perspective and apparently hung-up on the operational definition of spirituality.
4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Ian I. Mitroff and Elizabeth Denton proffer that many of the problems faced by business and society are the result of a spiritual impoverishment that they discovered in their research on organizations. The authors bring an authoritative, scholarly tone to their material, yet they write conversationally and make no effort to hide their opinions. While indicting corporate America for its neglect of the spiritual, Mitroff and Denton also cite examples of businesses with soul that encourage the expression of spirit. We [...] recommend this book to all readers interested in the creation of a more spiritually fulfilling workplace.
3-0 out of 5 stars This book substantially over-promises
This book over-promises based on its title. It offers three things:its company research is based on mailed-back questionnaires from 131 people from companies described only as coming from a "special database" and as being located on the east coast and the west coast; in addition, the authors conducted a number of interviews and "partial" interviews. Many of the "companies" are not-for-profits and consulting firms. The significant problem here is that this cannot be, in any realistic manner, considered to be an audit of corporate America. This is preliminary and exploratory work. There is some interesting writing on spirituality and the differences between spirituality and religion, although the writing suggests (to me) biases on the authors' part.In addition, the book describes companies and organizations that have been much written about elsewhere, such asAA, Tom's of Maine, Ben and Jerry's, the YMCA. The book can be stimulating of your thinking and offer some useful insights, and for that I appreciate it, but it is not a broad based, valid, objective study of spirituality in corporate America. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The author understands our situation and how to fix it
I'm an internal consultant at Fiskars, Inc. For the past two years I've been reviewing books about how to implement teams, but everything I read contained the same old traditional ideas that haven't worked for us (i.e.give employees some basic skills training, then ask them to take turnsdoing various supervisory functions). The Journey To Teams is a completelydifferent approach. The most important point is that most supervisors dotoo much of the thinking for their subordinates, which causes them to turnoff their brains while at work, which in turn frustrates everythingmanagement does to create teams. I gave copies of this book to severalshop-floor supervisors in our Alabama plant and they came back all excitedsaying that the author must be sitting around the corner watching us,because the book describes exactly the problems we've had implementingteams at our plant. I've started reading this book for the second time now,and I'm taking lots of notes. If you want to implement teams, you've got toread this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh, clear, logical thinking about team implementation
This book is easily readable by everyone at every level of the organization. That said, I've read it nine times and each time I learned something new. Don't expect any of the traditional team-building stuff thattreats teams as the objective. This book treats teams as a means to realobjectives - more capable people, producing better business results. Themost important concept in the book is called "the bridge of confidence", atechnique for building trust and confidence between supervisors andemployees, allowing supervisors to let go of control gradually withoutlosing control.5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh, clear, logical thinking about team implementation

Just plain terrific. 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful!
Katzenbach has created a very powerful, easy to follow methodology.A great read even if you're not trying to grow a team.Helps you set specific priorities and directions for a team, and to analyze your place in the team's process and development.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom of Corruption
While this book presents clear theories and structural understanding of teams, the case studies are not the greatest testament to their validity. It makes one wonder how much fluff is behind the principles. This "older" book uses case studies from organizations heralded in years past, but which have now proven to be the world's most corrupt organizations. My personal favorite: "Deal-to-Steel" (appropriately named) a case study of teams at Enron, which authors state is "an organization built on individual accountability." These case studies of high performing organizations make one question the credibility of the research. Furthermore, the authors' record of consulting to some of the most infamous companies known makes me wonder if you'd rather pick up a book about securing your future by Ken Lay, or sound accounting practices by Andy Fastow.

There are a lot of books about facilitation skills and techniques. This is one of the best because it is well organized and thoughtful in its presentation. It is very theoretical and does help an exeriencedfacilitator zero in on areas to improve, but is also useful to the beginnerby providing a good framework to work from. The key to success (like somany things) is practice. This is a good guide to get you started on theright foot and to use as a reference over time as your facilitation skillsdevelop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does Sari know me personally?
After reading her book I feel as if she does know me personally. Not even my mother could so accurately describe how I feel about my disorganization or my lack of attention. The nice thing about this book is it doesn't try to group all women with ADD into the same category. Some of us are hyper while others, like me, tend to withdraw from interaction.I could continue to identify with this book but my main point is you need to read it.I especially want non ADD people to read it so they might be able to understand some things.

I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD. My pyschatrist (a female) recommended this book. Although I'd read "Driven to Distraction" and "Delivered From Distraction," this book truly explained the disorder in its many forms and specifically how it impacts women. Sadly, I recognized myself in its pages... It gives me hope, however, to discover that I am not alone, and after years of feeling as though I haven't lived up to my potential, (I'm 29) there IS a reason why I feel this way. I can move forward with the tools (medication, structure, therapy) suggested in this book. It is a necessary component to any female ADHD/ADD patient. It is lenghtly and kind of wordy at times... It's best read in spurts or small chunks, as much of the information is dense. Take your time and read this one-- it's worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Women, uncap your pens
If you're ADD like me -- "ADD Like Me" wow, what a great movie title! Sorry; I digress -- anyway, if you are, then you'll be scribbling and underlining like mad all through this book.

This book was penned by the man who was lambasted for his Disco demolition stunt in Cominsky Park. In the middle of a doubleheader, the promoters put a box of disco records in the middle of the field with a bomb. When it exploded, fans ran onto the field and commenced creating their own disco record explosions. This eventually caused the cancellation of the second game is considered a travesty in baseball lore.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kindness and the bottom line
For me it's the gum-snapping , perpetually sneering checkout people at the supermarket, the ones with the angry, annoyed attitudes as if their being there was punishment of some kind. I've often wondered why store managers put up with this nonsense. Maybe it's because they don't think it matters where business matters most: the bottom line. But Ed Horrell in this wise book tries to make it as clear as possible that customer relations indeed affect the bottom line. It's no surprise that many consumers believe customer service is at an all-time low, and that it's become a persistent concern - enough so that it determines strongly who they decide to do business with. For Horrell, the way to attract more customers and keep them, and certainly the way to improve profits, is to better customer relations. I couldn't agree more. Shopping on-line might be a convenience, but it shouldn't be a choice simply because it usually means not having to deal with surly company employees. Kindness (and courtesy) indeed has a place in the business world, something many companies have forgotten. Ed Horrell's book is a good step in the right direction for (perhaps) bringing this about.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Mr. Horrell writes about is so obvious ...
... or is it? In this pleasant-to-read book, Ed Horrell makes what should be obvious clearly obvious, and clear. On every page, you will say to yourself, "Yes, this is right. This is how it should be." In short, this is an excellent book worth reading again and again. It will do nothing less than confirm for you that what you knew all along has always been right, and always will be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A little kindness can improve your business culture and your personal quality of life.
The Kindness Revolution is a well-written motivational book for change in business as well as our personal lives. As a Sales Manager, I love the "Action Items or Challenges" at the end of each chapter. The book is full of activities to change or improve large corporate cultures as well small business environments. It strikes me that "kindness" is free and one of the most valuable attibutes that a person can possess, yet as Ed notes in his book,it seems harder and harder to come by in this day and age.I think one of the most profound lines in the book is,"If you hire people with good attitudes, they will be good employees and, in turn, will attract good customers."If you read this book and enact the principles you will see results among your employees, customers, family and friends.Pass it forward!! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks consistency in explanations...
I agreed with many of the prior reviewers when they stated that the book doesn't cover many options and in some examples they are covered completely and other examples jump around and lack the same "follow through" in the lesson as the prior examples.I also found that included screenshots were not consistent as well.Often when I was expecting a screenshot because the explanation given in the text was not so clear, no screenshot existed. In Chapter 3 the author has you use an example from Chapter 2 and in the SubReports section, the correct example could not be found.I found the example stated in the text but it did not contain the example shown in the screenshot.
3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing for a 2nd Edition
The book is a reasonable resource.
2-0 out of 5 stars This book is not good
Actually I purchased this book few months back. Today my opinion is this book is not upto the mark. It is only blah blah blah. No topic is covered in detail. I needed to search web for many things after reading this book. He is nowhere discussing crystal reports SDKs in detail. We wont get any overview of crystal reports SDKs provided with visual studio.
