5-0 out of 5 stars HR is not there to help you
I always suspected that the HR Department was not there to help you.Now I know it for sure.Ms. Shapiro blew that myth wide open.I have never read a business book that was such a page turner.Reading this book showed me how to get ahead in my next job.I have made too many mistakes for that to happen in my current job!The favorite part for me was when Ms. Shapiro explains WHY tattoo's and piercings are not acceptable on the job, no matter how 'artsy' or 'creative' the environment supposedly is.I don't have either, but I've always thought they were inappropriate for work.I have recommended this book to every single one of my friends, employed or not.One of them is even experimenting with the ideas in this book for six months to see if it makes a difference in how she is perceived at work.If you have ever been unsure about how to use office email, or how to decorate your desk, who you should hang out with at work and how to handle those dreaded 'yearly reviews' then read this book.Loved it, loved it, LOVED IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars So I didn't play the game...
...and had my own opinions about the boss and company. My ex-boss had issues and was very good at managing up but not good at managing down and of course his brownnosing kept him his job.He sensed I was looking for another job so managed me out by giving an unbearable work load.God forbid I work hard, nights and weekends.Ultimately all my hard work led to my being "let go" - not being the "right fit/we're moving in different directions BS."If I had this book I probably could have kept my job longer and left on my own terms. Now I know. Thanks, Cynthia, for putting this book out there and telling us non-inner sanctum employees information we are never privy to!

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I understand.........
I have been working for 20 years and have lost more jobs than I can remember. My boyfriend kept yelling at me; 'You're not playing the game right!! Unitil you learn it, you'll keep losing jobs!!!!!' To which I would rely in exsaperation, 'What IS the game and what are the rules????" Well, the tool that he is, he was not about to tell me, but Cynthia laid it out flat. I saw all the things that I had been doing for the past 20 years, while still thinking that business operated in the way it did in the 70's. WRONG....... I cannot stress how important this book it to EVERYONE who holds a job.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference but Keep your common sense
In the last two years my company has been using Mr. Bounstein's advice to develop various management tools. "Communicating Effectively" has been a corner stone of new policies and everyone has been required to read the book. It is a decent one stop reference when you want to review your communication skills.5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Useful Book
This is a great book with a wealth of very useful information. As a project manager, communicating is a large part of my job. This book will definitely make my life a lot easier -- especially the chapters on conflict resolution.5-0 out of 5 stars Communications Made Simple

This is an excellent book. It provides 'state of the art and science' information about past and emerging work in emotioanl intelligence and competencies. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you are serious about learning the background to E.I.
The Handbook of Emotional Intelligence is a must read for anyone who is serious about emotional intelligence.Through this book, Bar-On and Parker have brought together a world-class collection of academics, psychologists and researchers. Before the Handbook was written, researchers and practitioners who wanted to get to the bottom of emotional intelligence needed to look up thousands of sources to even start their research.Bar-On and Parker have completed a sterling effort - the chapters include hundreds of research studies and the links are made between many different strands of research on intelligence and emotion and they are brought together in a 'tome' of useful information. This book is not a light piece of bedtime reading. It is a text book which should be on the shelf of anyone who wants to hear direct from the key researchers who have helped to create the field of Emotional Intelligence, so well popularised by Daniel Goleman in his book 'Emotional Intelligence'. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Workplace Communications
Having taught technical writing, workplace communications, and business English at three different institutions--community college, four-year institution, and private university--and possessing an earned doctorate with an English minor, I find Searle's textbook user friendly, relevant, and functionally practical for nontraditional students, particularly those seeking applied science associate degrees that are terminal. Each of the 10 chapters relate to written and spoken communicative tasks that are required on the job for most persons employed in skilled and paraprofessional positions. The format of the text is inviting and varied without being cluttered or obtrusive. Every community and technical college should consider this text for nontraditional "technical" or business writing courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligently Presented and Extremely Useful
After sourcing out dozens of books on office interior design, I found Julie Rayfield's Guide To Office Interior Design more than helpful. It was a real gift from heaven! I'm totally new to the world of design and about to start a job in sales and management for an international office furniture supplier and designer. I needed some information quickly. And I wanted it in a user-friendly, comprehendible manner. Reading the Gudie to Office Interior Design was like doing a crash-course in interior design without the heavy technical approach you would normally be subjected to. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Be cautious of the hype...
There are some valuable lessons in this book, but combing through the wordiness and fluff is very time consuming. Of course one could argue that you need all of the anecdotal evidence to prove what he is saying and make his observations relevant. But with most of his observations being common sense to a natural leader, you wouldn't need all of the evidence.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "MUST READ" book for everyone!
This was my first book on the "science" of teams.I had originally asked a friend who is a professor of Strategy for a book on "leadership" and he suggested this instead.Reading it was a very enjoyable experience.Relating it to teams that I have worked in, had to build relationships with, get work out of, and build myself, was an amazing exercise. In the end I realised that the best "self-managing team" I have is at home!I would strongly recommend this book to everyone, whether you work in a large organization or are a housewife! It's got beautiful insights for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Identifies common mistakes in teams and leaders
Even generally productive teams need to improve their productivity. I'm quite impressed by the framework provided in this book for diagnosing the quality of the direction you're providing, the way you structure your teams, and the way that people are identified with the teams and how all of these impact the team. It's interesting how much is delivered in this book without prescribing precisely how leaders should behave. As a person with a productive team whose concerns are primarily around keeping the team focused and getting more and more effective, this book was great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good buy
If you're fresh out of college and are looking for a guide to how to dress in the workplace, this book is pretty useful. If you've been in the workforce a while then it can be used to enhance your wardrobe. The tips are abundant, the language clear with lots of illustrations. It's a good gift for any college graduate and the male version is good too. Of course job culture is always evolving and sometimes the book can appear dated. In conclusion, this book is a good place to start a professional looking wardrobe but common sense is also needed to fit the adivce to the specific character of your workplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Project-oriented programmers must have this.
Project retrospectives can help educate a team by providing a clear review of what went right or wrong on a project, and why - but usually they are held at the end of a project after its completion, offering insights for the next project only. Agile retrospectives are incremental during the course of the project and can serve to strengthen courses and identify problems along the way: AGILE RETROSPECTIVES explains and explores the methodology and techniques for producing such analysis through the life of the project. Project-oriented programmers must have this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice for those desiring more frequent, shorter, better retrospectives
One of the challenges facing an agile team that holds a retrospective at the end of each one- to four-week iteration is how to keep the meetings fresh. When done this often retrospectives become redundant and team members often simply go through the motions. This is an excellent book that is full of so many ideas on how to conduct a retrospective that they will never become redundant.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent!
I have yet to regret a purchase from the Pragmatic Bookshelf. The books are clear and concise with pretty easy to implement action plans, and this one is no exception.

1-0 out of 5 stars Perpetuates Stereotypes
As a professor of leadership myself, I am struck by how this book perpetuates stereotypes.
3-0 out of 5 stars weLEAD Book Review from the Editor of leadingtoday.org
This is a unique book in both its purpose and style. Blanchard, Hybels and Hodges set out to teach servant-leadership by returning to its religious roots. Leadership by the Book is written in the form of a parable or story. It portrays the interaction of three different leaders: a professor, minister and young business professional. The purpose of the book is to teach management skills and ethics by examining the example of Christianity's founder, Jesus Christ. As the authors state in the introduction, "We believe there is a perfect practitioner and teacher of effective leadership. That person is Jesus of Nazareth, who embodied the heart and methods of a fully committed and effective servant leader."
2-0 out of 5 stars Very Slow Story!
I was absolutely bored to tears while reading this book.I think that a lot of the suggestions towards better leadership are very well intentioned and are good ideas, but it is very heavy in religion. If you are a strong believer in JC then this book might appeal to you.I was sick of the many religious references by page 30.The story was also poorly written.I found myself having to re-read portions of the book to understand the point. The only thing I will remember from this book is EGO (you'll get it once you've read it). ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Have a Moonshot...
An interesting book, authors used a unique way to write this book. Don't bother reading the entire book; choose a path or paths and off you go to those pages like an encyclopedia. Don't get stuck while trying to connect the dots. I must say a tricky book for average readers. However, on a positive note `The Serious Seven' aspires towards identifying the causes. This book uses case studies to toss some practical ideas and solutions. Vivek Dixit, Houston
