5-0 out of 5 stars A Thoughtful Look at Work-Family Relationships
This book contributes to our understanding of the complicated relationship between work and family life.Based on an extensive survey of over 800 business school alumni, the book takes the reader on a thoughtful journey looking at the issues facing both working parents and the organizations employing them. Organized around six major themes, two particularly stood out for me.First, the authors make the point that work and family can be allies. When there is support for non-work lives, individuals experience greater well-being in the form of less role conflict and greater self-esteem.Another critical theme is that children are major stakeholders at work.Although others have made this point, Friedman and Greenhaus do a stellar job of describing the behavioral and psychological effects on children of having a mother or father deeply involved in work.Written in a clear and engaging style, this book is valuable to both human resource practitioners and scholars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Stewart D. Friedman and Jeffrey H. Greenhaus conducted extensive research with 861 alumni of the business schools at Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania, both in Philadelphia. Their research yielded revealing results about the struggle of professionals to manage work and family commitments. However, Friedman and Greenhaus present these results in such overwhelming statistical detail that the average reader is in danger of being swamped. This is especially the case when the data proves principals that most people already grasp through common sense and experience. That said, we ... recognize that the authors have done working Joes and Janes a great service by aggregating numbers to back up the notion that it's getting tougher to balance family and career. As such, this is an important book for anyone in a position to set workplace policy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pioneering new ideas for integrating work and family
The dilemma that working parents all face as they succeed in their careers is how to manage their emerging professional responsibilities with their nurturing responsibilities for children. When family demands escalate, typically women scale back, or opt out of, professional opportunities freeing men to climb the proverbial career ladder. An authoritative new book, Work and Family -- Allies or Enemies by authors Stewart Friedman and Jeffrey Greenhaus, makes the case that it is possible for both working parents to pursue a career and assume full parental responsibilities - and be happy doing it - if both are willing to work cooperatively.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Source of Information
I felt this book was a valuable source of information.I needed a brief account on the necessary components on being a successful and effective team leader. This book led me from step to step on how to go about learning how to be a successful team manager. It included the basic know-how of team leadership, like being prepared and posing crucial questions to the team. However, it also went in-depth into the necessary skills needed in order to manage a goal-oriented group.I felt that this book not only acknowledged how to plan for a discussion, but it also looked at the real truth that can come up in group discussion. It analyzed the ins and outs of a group dynamic and even suggested ways of combating difficulties that arise in the process. The authors, Donald Hackett and Charles L. Martin, have a style of writing that is efficient, easy to grasp, and sensible. They were able to provide a step by step analysis on what it takes to be a valuable facilitator, but also the things that come up that leaders need to deal with carefully.Their topic ranges from the basic start of what a facilitator is to what skills a team leader needs. Then they consistently maintain this vision of how an effective leader can lead the group to a successful completion of the task.I enjoyed reading this book, because it not only opened my eyes to how I see leaders perform in groups I have been involved in, but I also know now how to be a successful facilitator in groups that I may choose to lead in the future.I can know use these suggestions and techniques to really drive a team into successful task completion.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has thought about leading a team in group discussion. The authors' simple, to the point style of writing, including examples and suggestions, made for a delightful read.I enjoyed reading this book as much I enjoyed learning from it as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Proper Examination and Explanation of Human Action
If you have found most personality tests insignificant, unhelpful, or unrevealing, then perhaps this book is for you. Human Dynamics goes into much more depth and provides a greater understanding of human communication and actions than any simple personality test. While people can be placed into certain "dynamics," these dynamics are not nearly as restraining or stereotypical as personality tests tend to be. Rather than explaining one's personality, dynamics explain how groups of people tend to process information, not necessarily how aggressive, passive, or "likeable" they are. This book helped me in terms of personal discovery, and has also helped me understand why it always seemed that so many people "just never seemed to think like me."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Models to describe human personality are presented. Each model has itunique characteristics, its strengths and weaknesses. Each model willrespond most effectively to certain modes of communications. Thisunderstanding of the different models presented will help a manager, ateacher, a student or just about anybody to understand themselves andpeople around them better. This will enable better communication of ideasand thoughts. Students will learn better and managers will be able tocommunicate more effectively with individuals. The models can be taken upto an organizational level. The applications of this book are far and wide.It is also simply and clearly written.

5-0 out of 5 stars improving teamwork in your organisation, family & community
the first time that I have found an approach which looks at humans holistically and systemically. It is not a group of personality characteristics describing superficial behaviours, buta way ofunderstanding and recognising internal processes particular to varioushuman dynamics. It therefore goes much deeper than any other personalityassessment technique I have seen and because of this can not be reduced toa paper and pencil test. However, the gift this approach brings is that itcan be taught to everyday people and can provide access to betterrelationships and a greater understanding of how to release our judgementof others.A truly life changing book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Triggering!
Virtuoso Teams is a great book. Not only for its very insightful lessons of history but moreover for its truly stimulating content: When discussing this book with colleagues and friends, everyone had at least one example of a virtuoso team to which they once belonged.
5-0 out of 5 stars Your thinking about building great teams may be faulty.
Boynton and Fisher have produced a small gem of a book that provides a refreshing, and some might say a revolutionary view of how to staff and manage transformational teams. They support their non-traditional perspective on to build virtuosity into collective endeavors by offering brief, but thoroughly engaging histories of seven such remarkable teams.Sharing the ins and outs of such diverse collaborative efforts as the production of West Side Story, the Manhattan Project, the light bulb, Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows, Amundsen's successful voyage to the South Pole, Miles Davis' revolutionary jazz recordings, and Norsk Hydro's crisis management approach, Boynton and Fisher discern seven lessons for how virtuoso teams can drive transformational change.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring teams, unifying leadership
Too often books on teams take case studies from sports teams. This book draws real life examples of teams who had breakthrough experiences - from TV script writers to Antartic exploration, to oil reserves. The last section of the bookhas a very practical "how to do it yourself" guide to apply it to your own business or community challenge. As a buisness owner and Chairman I will be using these ideas with my people. The step by step guide on how to build your own Virtuoso team and do a "Deep Dive" is easy to follow and I believe would make sense in all cultures ( I have 10 different nationalities in my business) .It is a useful addition to the body of literature on teams - highly recommended ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A How-to manual for Change Managers
The author sees the tradition vertical structure of business as an outdated structure from the industrial era. This book pushes the horizontal organization. The horizontal organization does not divide the company into departments.Instead, it groups people and work across core processes. These core processes all work together to create and deliver something of value to the customers.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!
The horizontal organization is a more appropriate model for the knowledge age, according to author Frank Ostroff, who says companies increasingly find this structure more effective. He emphasizes the need to start with an understanding of your organization's core competencies and to develop a horizontal structure from there. Ostroff claims this is the first model of this approach, but it is not. In fact, his fairly academic book advances a trend that is already well documented. Horizontal organizations have been covered in numerous other books, which, like this one, promote more decentralized, downsized, team-oriented organizations with empowered workers. Despite a leaden, pedantic writing style, Ostroff distinguishes his theoretical discussion with several detailed examples of how the horizontal organization works and how you can apply it to your company. We ... recommend this book primarily to academics, who may enjoy its theoretical nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightened Speculation
The subtitle promises that Ostroff will explain "what the organization of the future actually looks like and how it delivers value to customers." It is more accurate to say that Ostroff suggests what that organization will probably look like...and how it will probably deliver value to customers. Specifically, what he calls the Horizontal Organization "organizes around core process groups. All the people who work on a core process are brought together into a group that can easily coordinate its efforts and maximize the value of of what it delivers to customers." It differs from other models in that it is more comprehensive by incorporating "elements of some of the existing concepts, such as process reengineering, individual empowerment, and teams. But it goes beyond them by providing an overall framework for the organization that integrates and makes use of the best of these ideas in a new structure that has been proved in practice." So, Ostroff's intention is to help his reader understand what the Horizontal Organization is, how it works, how it can be developed, and how to decide where it can be effectively employed in any organization.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool
I bought this book for a legal assistant class and I enjoyed it.I learned a lot. It's hard to learn computers from a book - but not this one.The book comes with software and has tutorials and exercises that accompany the software. My class also liked the fact that there are tons of practical applications for how computers are actually used by practicing paralegals and legal secretaries in the book. Also, when it comes to litigation support -one of the most difficult legal computer applications to master - it was fantastic. It comes with three different litigation support programs, including Summation.Summation is fairly involved to learn and the book, tutorials, exercises and software did a good job of teaching this to me.I am confident now in my ability to do basic litigation support. The chapter on using the Internet to do legal and factual research was also excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars I would definately buy this again!
This book is essential for anyone working in a law office.Computers are used in nearly every aspect of working in a law firm. The book is huge - nearly 700 pages - and it covers every main type of program used in a law office. It comes with software, and lots of exercises and I thought it was very easy to read and straight forward. It covers hard topics like litigation support and Access databases in a way that I could understand without totally going over my head. The book covers both entry level and advanced topics. For example in the word processing chapter the Word tutorial had 7 lessons that got progressively more difficult, starting with basic word processing and ending with mail merges and creating tables of authorities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
I think this is a fabulous book.It comes with demonstration versions of 5 legal software programs including three litigation support programs, a time and billing program and a case management program. There were a number of in-depth, hands-on exercises for each program, so I really got to learn about each type of program by using it.Also, although I have used Access, Word, Excel and Powerpoint before, I liked the fact that there were in-depth exercises for learning legal applications for each of these programs. This is a very practical book. ... Peter Senge, founder of the Center for Organizational Learning at MIT's Sloan School of Management, experienced an epiphany while meditating one morning back in the fall of 1987. That was the day he first saw the possibilities of a "learning organization" that used "systems thinking" as the primary tenet of a revolutionary management philosophy. He advanced the concept into this primer, originally released in 1990, written for those interested in integrating his philosophy into their corporate culture.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "leverage point" in its own right
An extremely insightful book on optimizing organizational life. Senge identifies several critical disciplines for organizations to develop: systems thinking, personal mastery, mental models, building shared vision, and team learning.
5-0 out of 5 stars Think beyond what we see is our own "world"...
I read The Fifth Discipline back in 1999 and it is probably one of the best books I have read in terms of being in-line with my beliefs on continuous learning. The author, Peter Senge, examines five disciplines of a model he calls the "learning organization". These components are: Systems Thinking, Personal Mastery, Shared Vision, Team Learning, and Mental Models. Although all of the disciplines are interrelated and make up the "learning organization", Senge highlights Systems Thinking as the 5th discipline. Using the 4-0 out of 5 stars mental models
after reading the fifth discipline textbook, i think this book will educate people to used this fifth discipline in the company, and on the reality. ...

I've used Epstein's book together with Michalko's "Thinkertoys," in my creative thinking seminars with great success. You can't fail with these two books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different approach
This book focuses on the stimuli (inputs/old ideas) and effective capaturing of responses (outputs/creative ideas) vs most other books about creativity focus on the thinking process, like mindmapping, six hats, thinking toys, etc. Thus, it directs to a total different path of how we build an environment to boost creativity. My analogy is no matter what thinking process you introduce, a group of housewives cannot invent a racket to reach the moon (don't get me wrong, I highly respect housewives for their contribution to families). It's the relevancy and variety of the inputs that matters.5-0 out of 5 stars Realy Improving

5-0 out of 5 stars Pioneering work
This is a pioneering book, which provides a generalist approach to dealing with cross-cultural issues with many excellent examples. Hofstede was one of the first to bring the study of how culture affects human interaction in the field of business. The quantifying approach is very similar that cultural anthropologists use.As with all pioneering works there is some criticism about conflict resolution as other reviewers have pointed out. Another central criticisms of this model has been that nation state and culture are always presumed to be the same. Local culture does not follow political boundaries. Some readers might be tempted to think of people in simple categories, which is precisely what Hofstede counsels that we should attempt to avoid. Cultures and organizations gives good insights on how "Groupthink" controls our lives and how we could improve interaction. This is a good book for international managers and students of culture.

1-0 out of 5 stars Science or Dogma?
Is this book scientific or dogma? Science employs unambiguous concepts, does not ignore data that contradicts; and revises in the light of valid critique. This book fails all these tests. For a comprehensive critique of its many flaws see Professor Brendan. McSweeney's widely cited paper in Human Relations(2002) 55.1. To take an example from the Hofstede's book: they state that "the masculinity-femininity dimension affects ways of handling industrial conflicts. In the United States as well as in other masculine cultures such as Britain and Ireland) there is a feeling that conflicts should be resolved by a good fight ... the industrial relations scenes in these countries is marked by such fights. If possible management tries to avoid having to deal with labor unions at all." (p.143). This claim first appeared in Hofstede (1991) and later in Hofstede (2001). Test 1: a national culture does not affect national managers but only national labor. Inconsistent. Test 2: according to the Hofstede's own ranking (p. 121) Japan is the second most masculine country and Germany is more masculine than either the US or Britain. And yet for over fifty years the industrial relations in Japan and Germany have been the least conflictful. The Hofstede's claim is contradicted even by their own data. Test 3: In 2002 McSweeney published a second paper in which he showed that mascluninity-femininity has no predictive or explanatory power in relation to industrial relations. His data showed that sometimes such relations in feminine countries are more aggressive than in masculine countries, sometimes they are less. Despite this data the Hofstede's repeat a claim that is clearly contradicted by the data (others and even their own). A company which believed the Hofstede's claim would be discouraged from considering investing in Britain, Ireland, or the US and would be encouraged to invest in feminine countries such as the Hofstede's Netherlands which they claim is the third most feminine country in the world. Hopefully, not too many are misled by the dogma in this book which bears no relation to reality.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's good. For a textbook.
I'm a grad student working on an international MBA and this was one of our required texts. I admit to being rather intimidated by all of the buzzwords in it when I first got the book, but after sitting down and actually churning through it, it's not bad at all. It didn't exactly drastically alter my perspective with regards to international/intercultural communications, but it definitely provided some 'hmmm... neat' points to think on.

Editorial Review

Essayist and cultural critic Barbara Ehrenreich has always specialized in turning received wisdom on its head with intelligence, clarity, and verve. With some 12 million women being pushed into the labor market by welfare reform, she decided to do some good old-fashioned journalism and find out just how they were going to survive on the wages of the unskilled--at $6 to $7 an hour, only half of what is considered a living wage. So she did what millions of Americans do, she looked for a job and a place to live, worked that job, and tried to make ends meet. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars She Made It Even Harder To Get By
Ehrenreich is the kind of journalist I despise. One who thinks her insights are so important that it doesn't matter how much she inconveniences others to make her point.
3-0 out of 5 stars Bring your own grain of salt.
This is not a bad book, but it's not a good one. Although I certainly gained some insight from reading this book, I was disappointed (and surprised) by Ms. Ehrenreich's (or the editor's?) lack of fact-checking/ attention to detail, and/or embellishment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concrete Help for Admins
Can only reiterate everything good that has been said so far. This is a MUST read.I have over 25 years' experience as an assistant to business owners and executives, yet my copy is dog-eared, highlighted, and just about worn out after one year.Anyone who invests in this book, acts upon what's inside, and tends to their career with diligence, will probably be very grateful to Joan Burge within 1-3 years.Everytime I apply something I've learned in this book, I find that my boss seems to make my life a little easier. It's been a total blessing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Administrative Professionals
This book is an absolutely valuable and current resource for all administrative professionals. As an administrative professional for over 20 years, I endorse the book's message that our job is critical in the workplace and is worth talking about. It's not another "how to climb the corporate ladder" book--instead, the author puts in writing ways we can use the administrative and people skills we have developed over years of job experiences in our field to help us expand our positions, become partners with our executive, and become a more visible and important player on our company's management team. Ms. Burge provides an in-depth discussion of twelve key competencies and other personal attributes that are important to our success. Even the seasoned professional will gain additional insight and strategies and benefit from the "hands-on" tips, quizzes, and activities in this book. Ms. Burge's confidence in and passion about administrative professionals shines through each page and encourages the reader to be a star and pave their way to Inner Circle status. I earmarked and highlighted concepts and ideas in the book that are meaningful to me and I keep my copy in my top desk drawer for easy reference. I highly recommend this book to career administrative professionals everywhere!
5-0 out of 5 stars Stepping Stone to Success

I followed each of the core competencies throughout my daily routines and was noticed right away by my peers & superiors. This book is a great stepping stone to your success. I'm ready to read through it again to refresh my memory and maybe find something I missed or still need to work on. ... Read more
