5-0 out of 5 stars More than an academic perspective
I'm an American based in Japan and working all over Asia. I found this book to be an outstanding analysis of the relationships between Americans and their foreign colleagues or customers. 5-0 out of 5 stars real-life examples of diversity in globalized business
In the past four years, I have used Intercultural Communication in the Global Workplace with over 500 community college students interested in cultural differences from a business perspective. This book provides auseful structure for thinking and talking about both the theoreticalfoundations of global diversity as well as the practical implications ofworking cross culturally - -whether from a desk in the USA or travelingand working abroad. The book is well-organized and includes thoughtfullyselected, real-life examples of cultural differences (which I, as anoverseas expatriate of 20 years can verify). The real value of the book isin these multiple examples which give readers a sense of the rich diversityof our globalized world and the importance of encountering business peoplefrom other cultures (both within the USA and abroad) with an awareness of,and sensitivity to, cultural priorities. The case study in the chapter onnegotiations with other cultures is particularly well-conceived and useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Crystal Reports 10
This book has been an invaluable resource in creating and publishing reports with Crystal Reports 10. I've been able to give it to new designers to get them up to speed and also use it to look for answers to quick questions on new features. Overall, this is the most versatile book I've found on Crystal Reports 10.

2-0 out of 5 stars Complete but not for learners
This book delivers exactly what the title promises. It goes through Crystal Reports 10 screen by screen and feature by feature. It is well laid out and has lots of screen prints. There is way too much verbiage, at least for this reader.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good review -- lacks advanced depth
The text is one of the first available for Crystal Reports 10.It does a good job of covering all the basics. It even goes into some "intermediate" details in various sections. If you're new or fairly new to Crystal Reports, then the book will be a valuable reference to you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Building a Productive Team
This little book states well the mechanics of teambuildingand teamworkmanship, and I enjoyed reading it. In the end it shows that these mechanics can be summarized into ten distinct steps: (1) deciding on the importance of having a team; (2) assemblying a competent team; (3) doing what it takes to develop the team; (4) working like a team; (5) delegating power, responsibility to the team; (6) giving, not taking, credit for the success of the team; (7) collecting and sharing the returns from investment in the team's efforts;(8) divesting from underperforming team members; (9) opening and expanding opportunities for team growth; and (10) giving the team the reason, resources, and the chance to succeed.
4-0 out of 5 stars I loved it
I loved this book. Its a quick read. And it makes the point very quickly: Teams succeed, individuals don't! The glorified individuals we often hear of (steve jobs, bill gates, etc) are actually "leaders" leading successful teams. (Not that we don't know these things, but the book makes things obvious, very nicely.)
4-0 out of 5 stars Teetoncey
I give this book four stars. It was exciting and I was always on the edge of my seat. The book I read was Teetoncey, written by Theodore Taylor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaching + Systems Thinking = Transformation!
The author integrates coaching with systems thinking and the learning organization popularized by Peter Senge's book "The Fifth Discipline". This revised edition shows the Hargrove's approach is still fresh and surprisingly unique, given all the recent books published on coaching.
5-0 out of 5 stars Every coach should read this book!
In the last ten years since I started coaching managers and leaders, I have read almost everything out there on the subject. This book stands out! The distinctions Hargrove makes about coaching provide clarity, while being very useable and transferable to others. He also writes in a very readable style, and balances profundity and humor to get his points across. Some points that I found especially useful were:5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic revision of an already great book!
I found Hargrove's book inspiring, insightful, and useful. I had read his first book - which was pivotal for me in creating my own coaching business-- and have found that he has taken this work to another level-a very compelling, as well as easy read. The two parts that I found most applicable to my own coaching clients were his step-by-step approach to coaching executives and the part on creating a "laboratory" that fosters collaboration within a group. I was able to bring these principles to a client who was wowed by what we were able to generate for her business. I would recommend this book to any coach, internal and external to a company, as well as to any leader who wants to create an "impossible future." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This authors clinical experstise is unrivaled.
As a front line supervisor with twenty years experiance under my belt I am very impressed with the authors ability to teach several new and effective people skills in every chapter. I have enjoyed several management texts inthe past dozen years and found valuable tools in each and everyone. Whetherit was "Reinventing the Warehouse" or "The Goal" theselarge scope versions of the self help books of the seventies all seem tofall victim to the same flaw as thier predacessors. While technicallyadept, they all start with the assumption the clay of human flesh with hasno self determination. No sense of "Natural Law" that issearching for expression in a positive direction. When one of these verytalented authors reaches outside of thier technical area and embraces amore holistic approach they will strike gold. Maybe Plunkett is just theguy to do it.in any case it was a superb effort, for what it was. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Kimball Fisher and Mareen Duncan Fisher document the special skills needed for the new but increasingly common task of managing far-flung work groups. The approaches that they examine are becoming increasingly essential for all managers. Although they explore relevant technologies carefully, their human relations advice is probably more important. The Fishers emphasize the interpersonal and leadership skills that a manager needs to head a virtual team. If you read this book cover to cover, it can seem repetitive, since many of the rules and tips offered in one area overlap with those in other areas. However, the book is designed to allow you to review specific management challenges and technologies, and to ignore areas that are irrelevant to your situation. We [...] recommend this clear, practical work to anyone who leads virtual teams and to the telecommuters and freelance workers who report to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must have' for any consultant who works with teams.
I won't write a detailed review, here's what I found helpful:
3-0 out of 5 stars Skip the text and go to the exercises
This so-called sequel to The Wisdom of Teams is a "workbook" with exercises. It offers no new insights/guidance for readers of the 2002 paperback update of The Wisdom of Teams.
3-0 out of 5 stars Nice overview, but lacks concrete guidance
This book excels at drawing the line between leader-driven and team-driven groups of individuals. It also characterizes some of the failure cases very well -- teams that are too large, teams that don't have a clear vision and purpose, teams that are disconnected from the rest of the organization, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Owners Manual For Managing the Muti-generational Workplace
The Year 2006 represents a unique place in time in the history of our workplaces in the United States. We now have four different generations in the same workplace and that has presented many challenges to business owners and managers. This book could be called an "Owner's Manual" in the sense that it provides some practical advice on how to deal with this age-diverse workforce. If you are looking for some help to "muffle" the loud sounds of colliding generations, or to bring those loud sounds into harmony, then this is a book for you.The book is a must read for business owners and managers to help understand the differences in the workforce; how to resolve conflicts and how to fully utilitze the diversity of ages to achieve success in business.
3-0 out of 5 stars For managers, with a grain of salt, please
Never before has there been such diversity in the workforce. This is particularly true of the range of ages that co-exist on the job.In Generations At Work, the authors identify the four generations, the particular problems you may encounter managing them, and potential solutions. As the employee pool matures, this is knowledge every manager of a cross-generational workforce will need. These categories are, of course, cut rather broad. This book is probably better used as an idea toolbox than gospel writ.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good read
I liked this book since it gave me an insight into the different components of each generation and how to deal with them at work as well as in general.I manage early boomers to nexters and am a Gen Xer and this book will help a great deal with that challenging task. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an excellent book. From its marketing, I thought that "When Cultures Collide: Managing Successfully Across Cultures" pertained specifically to dealing with people of different nationalities in the business place. And indeed, it is a most useful book for that purpose. However, I was struck by how much one could apply Lewis' analyses to other situations, for example, dealing with people of other nationalities on a social level. Indeed, I have many aquaintances, and some close friends, from diverse backgrounds, and this book sometimes occupies us for entire evenings, discussing our experiences with one another. The chapter on Hungarians I found particularly accurate, and entertaining. I believe that Lewis would have enjoyed hearing some of these discussions (and arguments). My point is: don't dismiss this book thinking it is a businessman's tool. It's a good read for anybody who encounters people of other nationalities and cultures, irrespective of the context.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading before working internationally
At times this book veers on being discriminatory, shallow, stereotypical and arbitrary. For instance, what has Mr Lewis got against the Finns to focus on them mercilessly? Is it really useful to paint these simple caricatures of whole nations, with all their diversity and increasing multi-ethnicity?
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Richard D. Lewis, an expert on cross-cultural and language training who has tutored clients from Swedish corporate executives to the Japanese Imperial Family, discusses the need to consider cross-cultural differences in managing any company in today's global world. He suggests a broad model you can use to characterize different national characteristics as linear-active, multi-active, and reactive. These traits shape attitudes toward time, leadership, team building, and affect a range of organizational behaviors. Lewis includes brief national profiles you can refer to when doing business away from home. This in-depth book covers common patterns in different cultures, and offers many examples of how different groups act under different situations. We at getAbstract recommend this book to top executives, managers and anyone who works in a multicultural business environment, as well as to general readers with a yen for informed people watching. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read !
Author John Yokoyama, owner of Seattle's World Famous Pike Place Fish Market, explains how he changed his attitude toward his employees, embraced a new way of treating people, led his employees in a fundamental directional shift and built a widespread reputation. This isn't a business "cookbook" that tells you step by step what to do. As Yokoyama insists, you can't just copy someone else's success. You must be an individual. However, the story of his turnaround and triumph at World Famous Pike Place Fish Market is a good read that illuminates the need for leaders to treat their employees, as he says, as people, not as human resources. Although the Market is getting to be as overexposed as a fish left out in the sun, we welcome this first person exposition from the owner. After numerous published accounts about the Market, the saga of how Yokoyama empowered employees, promoted his business and changed his style comes through best in his own words.

3-0 out of 5 stars The original is the best
This book cannot be appreciated by those who have not read the original Fish!. Though this book is directly from John Yokoyama, the owner of the world famous Pike Place Fish, it lacks the kind of inspirational and personal touch that made the Fish! philosophy so famous. At best it appears to be a nice opportunity to hear the story of the great place from the owner himself but there is much room for improving the sequencing of topics, the narrative style and in bringing out the true excitement of the place. It appears at many places that too much importance is given to employees' conformity to the vision of becoming world famous and the business is run as a proprietary concern, enforcing the views of the owner on most occasions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Customer service & employee morale
Customer service and employee morale are the two main messages from this interesting audio book. Yokoyama explains in his own words how he turned around a struggling Seattle fish market and developed loyalty from his employees, helping them develop vision and commitment. Having never had a full-time employee leave within the past five years, Yokoyama offers advice for encouraging passion in employees, teaching them to overcome the daily frustrations and setbacks that are part of the job. The audio describes how crowds gather daily to see the crew throwing fish and interacting with customers, and also to purchase some of the freshest fish in the country. Yokoyama's attitudes were shaped partly from his childhood experience of being impris-oned in World War II Japanese-American internment camp. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book has Changed my Life.
I have to say, I felt pretty disgusted with myself, having to pretend to be insecure and self-depreciating, just to get other women to like me. But by God it works.
5-0 out of 5 stars Women Working Wisely
This book has been an invaluable reference and resource for me.Pat Heim's experience in addressing relationally aggressive behaviors between women in the workplace shows through in every page she writes. With "In the Company of Women" she adds one more feather to her impressive cap and advances each reader's understanding of this important issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable and authoritative information
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I thank her very much. The authors have described processes that explain what I have observed, but couldn't quite understand, until reading this book. Why women have an incredible memory for hurts and injustices; why women can be so 'catty' amongst themselves; why women can talk so intimately and so easily with each other and with men... I could go on and on with the questions I've always had about women.Learning about the 'tend and befriend' hormone and about the Darwinian survival characteristics of many of these behaviors helps men (as well as women) understand and not personalize these inherent patterns.I especially appreciated the research citations and the sound scientific foundations of the authors' conclusions.I have recommended this book to a dozen people I know, and I think it's a worthwhile read for any adult who works with, is in a relationship with, or is a woman - and I guess that's everyone. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Valid Scientific Writing - misses detailed "How To" answers
After being disappointed by Cary Cherniss' book on "promoting" emotional intelligence, I was rather reluctant to spend money on this one, so I ordered a used copy through Amazon (very satisfactory: the copy I got was as good as new).I must say that I find my money well spent. In fact, the only reason why this book doesn't get 5 stars is that it's too scientific for practical application.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The messages stay with you
Anna provides so many messages that simply stay with me in my everyday life. They include avoiding judgement of people and taking time to appreciate the context or the system in which they work. The downward spiral on relationships when I am tempted into hostility and blame. The need to feed the positive loving energy we all have and starve out our negativity, etc etc. This is an inspiring, as well as a very useful, book

5-0 out of 5 stars The method really works in my personal life, too!
Luckily my work situation is pretty peaceful, but I found Anna Maravelas' book an easy read & so helpful on many levels! The whole concept of "flooding" with adrenalin and getting caught in a space where there is only one option of action - and it's not a pretty one - was a huge "Ah ha" to me!I've done it - and I hate it, and now I have tools to avoid it!It also explains the behaviors of others in my life that seem so unreasonable at times - they're just flooded!Maravelas gives a thorough and thoughtful explanation of human behavior in the workplace - which also translates to any relationships.I'm so glad I read it!I refer back to it & find the graphics so easy for finding that point I want to refresh!
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST Read Book for Every Human Being
After being introduced to this book and hearing Anna for a short 2 or so hours, this book is carried with me every where.I am learning hourly how to un-learn my destructive, unhealthy habits (BOBS) and replacing them with BIBS.
