5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
The principals espoused in this book, should improve any organization interested in human resource development.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well written--but doesn't quite hit the nail on the head.
This is a very good book on the subject of finding the type of people to work for you. What it fails to do is to point out the specialty people required to get a business running and growing. That is what I expected, after reading the title. One thing that totally put me off as I read this book. The author spoke of owning a shipping business and having a time pressure to get a shipment loaded. All of the laborers pulled together as a team, working long hours and extra shifts without complaining or asking for overtime pay.Who made the lions share of the money? Not the ones who did the hard labor, but he as the owner.Compensation was something not mentioned in this book.I very much like the concept of a 'code of honor', in which this book was almost completely based.I am still not really sure, after reading this book, what the difference between a code of honor and a mission statement is.A couple of great books that also cover this concept very well are: On My Honor I Will, and The Lost Secret of Phenomenol Success. This kind of book makes you think about your values, and what you want from life.I recommend it.Just remember, it may not be what you expect.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!
I am an entrepreneur and wanted some inspiration, sadly I just found a lot of crap in this book. There's nothing I can apply, anyone can come up with a book better than this. just by reading the index you know this book was written by someone who has no idea about business. I'll write it for you:

I bought this book to help me change the dynamic of weekly staff meetings from complaint sessions into something constructive. My staff was resistant at first, but now they look forward to the exercises.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
Unbelievable!! This book is exactly what I have been looking for! I have done successful team building activities in the past, but not to the extent, and with the outcomes I am achieving by using this book.Mr. Miller not only gives you a lot of activity ideas, which most books do, he also gives you easy, quick instructions on how to get the most out of each activity. He makes you visualize the activity taking place and what possible obstacles you might face in doing an activity. Everyone wants to tell you WHAT team building activity to do, but no one tells you HOW to do it. This is what this book provides! Mr. Miller has taught me how to prepare for, conduct, and debrief a very successful activity each time, every time. My employees love it and I love it! Thank you Mr. Miller!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Re-Strategize for Glowing Success Potential At Work
OK, with all of the efforts of Human Resources these days to hire the right people, still about one out of every ten recruits run circles around the others. These recruits are solid gold. Were they born that way?Can they be made? Can they be recognized? The author attempts to answer this question from insights derived from a study conducted at Bell Labs.Everyone was interviewed and surveyed. The top producers were found by survey of both management and staff. The discoveries are very interesting. The statement is made that to become a star performer you don't need super IQ, great self-confidence, or silky smooth social skills. You just need to change your strategies. We have all seen people succeed without these characteristics - here's why.
3-0 out of 5 stars It boils down to this- take initiative, network and broaden your perspective
Robert E. Kelley has outlined several strategies for turning yourself into a recognized asset for your company, improving your productivity and building a stellar career.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference for 'Brainpowered' Workers
This is a good guide to success in the workplace for engineers and other 'brainpowered' workers.Dr. Kelly, professor at Carnegie-Mellon's business school, writes of nine 'breakthrough' strategies to move ahead of the pack, into the 'A player' ranks. While the somewhat cheesy title implies that this is a guide for lazy people (the 'C players') to sneak their way up the ladder, this is in reality a well-written and well-researched book that is strictly for highly-motivated workers that just need a little added 'edge'.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer for facilitating group work
For people who lead and/or work in groups, this is a terrific little how-to book, practical and readable.I sit on a number of non-profit boards, and I've given it as a gift to all my board members to help us have more effective meetings. I also gave it to everyone in my department -- the book's advice on groundrules and agenda-building has helped us cut our meeting times in half. The book is so well-organized that I can take it into meetings with me and access information and tips quickly and easily. It doesn't load the reader down with theory and jargon.I'm an experienced meeting-manager, and I've read lots more advanced books on the topic, but I still like The Compleat Facilitator the best of all the facilitation books I own -- it's just so useful! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Read it, Use it. Love it!
I've recommended this book to a number of my clients who were struggling with strategic planning. Unlike other books, it does not deal in vague generalities or unsupported principles. It gives all of the steps and instructions to choose from that companies need to create an excellent plan. The steps are explained simply and a strategy on how to make "it happen".
5-0 out of 5 stars Team based strategic planning book is excellent.
This is an excellent guide that allows a leader to structure a strategic planning process to fit a specific organization. It gives step by step instructions and real examples that make the process come alive. It also gives guides for facilitating collection of information and the meetings that must be held to get concensus on the organization's direction. In 30 years of federal government management, I have not seen any book as clear and as useful in directing development of a strategic plan. This book has been on the market since 1999, so I must not be alone in this opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strategic Planning: Easy to Work With
This text was incredibly simple to understand. It was set up in a way that it had very easy guidelines to follow, and the applications were just as easy to work with. I completely recommend this text to all that are in the field of leadership. This is one text that is assured continual usage by all that purchase it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best in it's class
This is my all-time favorite book on the history and philosophy of Organization Development.I recommend it to every person who comes to me for an informational interview and it's required reading for all staff and interns at our consulting firm, Community At Work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Productive Workplaces Revisited
This was one of the first books I've read on Organization Development. After reading a multitude of OD books since it is still the only one that I enjoyed and found useful information in an easy to use format from cover to cover.I still reference it today.

5-0 out of 5 stars I think it is the Best and Most Comprehensive "OD" book ever
The original Productive Workplaces was a wonderful overview of the past, present, and future of OD.I read it many times and recommended it to many consultants, who ALL enjoyed it. The updated book is also a joy to read and filled with gold nuggets of wisdom from this OD pioneer. The original book was way ahead of it's time and this "revisited" version is still visionary in many ways.

4-0 out of 5 stars good info on generations in the workplace
This is probably your best bet for a book on generations in the workplace. It's not long on data, but it does apply knowledge about generations in a very useful way. It's not a deep treatment, but it gets the job done. A fairly quick read, and good if you just want to understand people of different ages in the workplace.
4-0 out of 5 stars All Business
I found this book to be very informative and readable. The book gives a number of good insights about the different values of four generations in the workplace today. There are lots of examples and solutions to making the workplace more productive and fun.Unfortunately, the book's focus is on business, making money and working together better.Guess that's what pays the bills.I guess the insights can help in relationships throughout society but for those who are looking for answers outside of business this might be a hard read to get through.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting observations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook.
I was required to purchase this book for a project management course and it's one of the better texts I've read on the topic.Well organized and easily referenced, one of the main strengths of the book is it's analysis of real world examples.Very good text overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Price for "External Evironments"
Leigh Thompson has done it again.Like few others this Northwestern University scholar takes current research and puts it on the page like few other experts.I particularly found the sections on dealing with conflict within teams, creativity, and social capital (in the External Evironment section) worth reading.I keep this book with me when I am meeting with a team.I use the individual chapters as a guide for activities there. If you have an interest in teams, Leigh Thompson is the one expert you should include in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making the Team Makes the Grade!
Whether you work in teams, design them, or study them, you will find much of value in this book.Drawing on a wealth of social and behavioral science findings, Leigh Thompson shows the advantages, and the pitfalls, ofgetting things done through teamwork.Clearly written, with many caseexamples, Thompson builds on her research and consulting experiences tocreate a complex picture of what makes groups tick. I particularly likedher explanation of how to foster creativity in teams, as well as how todeal with the inevitable conflicts that arise. She notes that teams are nota panacea. However, under the right conditions, properly organized teamscontribute substantially to their organizations. If you're dissatisfiedwith the way things are going in your organization, this book would make agreat (anonymous?) gift for your boss! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars First Impressions
If first impressions are lasting impressions, the points made in this book should last a lifetime for its readers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Thin
I like reading "How-to" books. So obviously I couldn't miss this one.As far as I liked what was inside, the problem is that there wasn't much of it.The book is extremely thin and for that reason I cannot give it 5 stars.Out of other "how-to" books my favorite are "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegi and especially"Never Eat Alone" by Keith Ferrazzi

2-0 out of 5 stars ***
Simple advice, but that's often the best kind. I've been told I'm quite socially adept, so I read this book mainly because I liked Brian Tracy's other books, and this had a few helpful pointers I hadn't considered before. I do think the authors put a land mine near the beginning of the book by holding Bill Clinton as an example of a charmer worth emulating!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, but I've read Christopher Hitchens' paperback edition of NO ONE LEFT TO LIE TO that includes the chapter about Clinton's history of rape. So Clinton is very arguably a sociopath and so right off the book gives the impression of perhaps being a guide for snake oil salesmen, or worse. But it actually preaches being genuine for the most part. I do know people who could use this book. And heard of them. A relative of mine knows the owner of a video rental store in the heart of a very wealthy Silicon Valley neighborhood. This neighborhood is filled with computer millionaires. And these millionaires are largely computer nerds. This video shop owner was complaining that his business was doing poor. Someone told him, "This neighborhood is filled with millionaires, BUT THEY ARE ALL COMPUTER DORKS WITH NO SOCIAL SKILLS. So their love lives are nil. Stock your store with porno and your business will go through the roof." And he was right. After the owner changed his inventory, busines sky-rocketed. This video store was many of these wealthy computer nerds' main sexual outlet. Even though they were filthy rich, their love lives were zero! That shows you how important charm and social skills are toward obtaining a full life! For people like that this book would be very valuable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars NURSING MOTHER WORKING MOTHER
FAST AND ON TIME. GREAT SELLER. WILL DO BUISNESS AGAIN. THANK YOU

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!-- a nursing guide with one foot in the real world
With an adopted 10-month old at home, my first pregnancy turned out to be twins. I loved my 40+ hour management level job and did not want to leave. I did not think nursing was an option, and quite frankly wasn't that interested in it anyway. This book changed my mind. It is down-to-earth and gave me the grounding I needed to think creatively and yet realistically about what I needed and what my children needed from me. I ended up nursing my twins almost exclusively for 2.5 years. Best decision I've ever made. I highly recommend this book and purchase it for every pregnant mom I know who inquires about nursing and managing a challenging work-filled life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Guidelines
This book I feel was very helpful to me even though my son was born early and breastfeeding attempts were unsuccessful. The book gives great insight to nursing successfully as well as working successfully while nursing, and I will pass this book to all of my friends that are pregnant and returning to work mothers in the future. I think first time breastfeeding mothers returning to work are very frightened and even intimidated by the thought and really need someone to help lay a timetable down (of course as a baseline, everyones life is a bit different so all will need to make some adjustments). this book really helped to give that needed structure and to let you know it is possible. The only thing I disliked about this book was the amount of talk about co-sleeping and some other opinions that get fluffed around, at times it feels a tid bit pushy, but if you can get past those frequent comments and hint arounds then its no problem. HIGHLY reccomend this book to returning to work mothers. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Index, Missing key concepts, Garbage...
I frequently use these reviews to select books of all types.I consider myself a power user able to learn rapidly from good texts. This book has not been very helpful for my work in Crystal Reports.
2-0 out of 5 stars Who are you writing this book for?
After reading positive reviews of this title, I decided to purchase the complete reference and was extremely disappointed. The most common problem with crystal books (or any other software application manual-excel, access, etc.) is that the author try's to appeal to all crystal report's users. There are generally three types of software user's out their, 1. database administrator/computer programmers who want reference manuals with excellent indexes. 2. Basic users who can get by with your classic "for dummies" title. 3. User's who don't understand VBA or SQL but want to be able to create reasonably advanced adhoc reports.5-0 out of 5 stars A good reference book
I develop financial reporting applications for various companies using VB and VBA.Recently I have completed a financial reporting system completely within Access 2000 making extensive uses of Access's report objects.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book DOES offer more!
I use the book "Team-Building Activities for Every Group" all the time and found this book is full of just as many new and great activities, if not more! This book seems to have more active games and a wider variety of new games! I use this book for my church group, soccer team and at the ropes course where I am a facilitator.

3-0 out of 5 stars More Pleasant Surprises
The sequel to "Team Building Activities for Every Group" is another decent activity resource book by Alanna Jones. I was pleasantly surprised by the first and equally happy with this publication.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great.
This book was O.K. but not great. The information could fit in ten to twenty pages - as in a pamphlet.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on teams
This is the best book on teams! If I could have given it more stars I would. A definite MUST read. This will be your reference bible on teams from now onward.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Practical
Teams are everywhere-in all kinds of organizations. Some work beautifully to produce wonderful successes; others are miserable failures. Why? The authors conducted research with over 6,000 team members and discovered five factors that determine a team's success: collaboration, relationships, group processes, leadership, and the organizational environment. This book is a report of what they learned, loaded with plenty of advice for increasing team effectiveness. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A real Time Killer - - - No Meat and all gravy
I have to say I was really excited when I picked up this book but now that I am almost through the book ...... I wonder how the hell did I have to patience to read the entire book without tossing it into the bin ..... well may be I wanted to to get something out of it for my money's worth ..... This book is not bad its just not what you would expect from the complete refrence series .... ABSOLUTELY NO MEAT ..... hell I could have written a book by copying and modifying the language from the USER Manuals ........ You don't learn something when the author just tells you "OK drop this menu and select this option" unless you are going to tell me why am I selecting this option ..... sry but I have to be harsh on this .... when you are writing a book a such a good software you need to be in really top form with an excellent command on everything ........ In the end "READ THIS IF YOUR COMPANY BUYS IT FOR YOU AND DON"T SPEND MRE THAN 2 DAYS ON THIS"

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for "newbies"
I found the sections on the history of Busines Objects and the background on Business Intelligence very helpful. The only missing component is a CD for the report exercises.
