5-0 out of 5 stars Start-up help for mentoring programs
Dr. Zachary's book plots the entire process for creating a mentoring culture in the organization. Her book offers clear steps to identify all the issues that need to be addressed prior to a program design and implementation. The book provides insight into the levels of buy-in and commitment needed for mentoring to be successful and imbedded in an organization.Mentoring is a powerful way to engage leadership in their personal growth and development and the advancement of the organization.
5-0 out of 5 stars Breadth and Depth
"Creating a Mentoring Culture" goes well beyond traditional guides for designing and implementing mentoring programs by touching the core of an organization's capacity to embed learning and leadership development throughout its structures and processes. Dr. Zachary's strategies and tools for bringing people together to have deeper conversations about organizational learning will not only help sustain its mentoring efforts; they will help an organization revitalize its values and its focus on human development.

5-0 out of 5 stars The healthiest organizations have a mentoring culture
In an increasingly competitive business world, the need for having what Peter Senge describes as a "total learning environment" is greater now than ever before. With all due respect to formal training programs, my own experience has convinced me that on-the-job training (especially cross-functional training) remains the most effective means by which to create and then sustain such an environment. Hence the importance of mentoring relationships which, Zachary correctly points out, "offer an opportunity for individuals to nurture seeds in others so they might become blossoms, and blossoms might become fruit, which then nourishes others." Moreover, "When mentoring relationships are rooted in the fertile soil of a mentoring culture, they also enrich the quality of organizational life."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art and Science of Effective Teamwork
This is one of the volumes in the new Harvard Business Essentials Series. Each offers authoritative answers to the most important questions concerning its specific subject. The material in this book is drawn from a variety of sources which include the Harvard Business School Press and the Harvard Business Review as well as Harvard ManageMentor, an online service. I strongly recommend the official Harvard Business Essentials Web site (www.elearning.hbsp.org/businesstools) which offers free interactive versions of tools, checklists, and worksheets cited in this book and other books in the Essentials series. Each volume is indeed "a highly practical resource for readers with all levels of experience." And each is by intent and in execution solution-oriented. Although I think those who have only recently embarked on a business career will derive the greatest benefit, the material is well-worth a periodic review by senior-level executives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Living Organization - Spirituality in the Workplace
William Guillory has hit the nail squarely on the head.It is about time that someone has been able to give solid thoughts as to how one can adapt to the ever changing workplace, while maintaining and enhancing spiritual values.5-0 out of 5 stars Spirituality:A New Paradigm for the Workplace
In THE STRUCTURE OF SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS, Thomas Kuhn suggested that the evolution of science was marked more by epistemological shifts than linear developments over time that reflected unchanging truths and practices. After Kuhn's analysis, scientists would never again be able to do "business as usual."William Guillory's work represents a similar epistemological shift, and like Kuhn's REVOLUTIONS has the potential to change the way that business is envisioned and actualized, literally challenging the business of "business and usual," and introducing an element that has yet to be fully explored in the numerous works that articulate transformative business practices. The future of business, for Guillory, is defined by one idea/practice:spirituality. SPIRITUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE:A GUIDE FOR ADAPTING TO THE CHAOTICALLY CHANGING WORKPLACE is William Guillory's contribution to the emerging conversation of how to effectively transform business and implement practices that will be responsive to, and inclusive of, empowerment, diversity, and organizational coherence.Guillory challenges some of our most sacred beliefs about difference and division:self and other, individuality and collectivism, andof course, spirituality and materialism. It is a book that offers a new vision of leadership, one that values intuition as much as observation, and the spiritual as much as the material. William Guillory's vision is, indeed, integrative, and reflects his own personal challenges and transformations.Guillory is the CEO and founder of Innovations Consulting International, and a highly sought after authority on facilitating organizational transformation, managing diversity, and creating contexts for individual empowerment. His work with organizational change and diversity led naturally to his own transformative self-reflections, reflections that moved him beyond the material concerns of a career to the spiritual possibilities of exploring his own deeply embedded life interests. He writes in the prologue of SPIRITUALITY of an experience in October of 1985 that changed both his life and his mind."Words flowed through me at a rate with which I cold hardly keep pace. There were phrases and concepts I had never heard before, pouring into my consciousness."Those words and phrases, he relates, challenged one of our culture's most sacred division, the separation of the spiritual and the material.Guillory believes that this division needs to be understood, addressed, and ultimately healed if organizations are going to be able to adapt to accelerated change and potential crises. The multiple ways of addressing this division are revealed throughout the book, in both the titles and the contents of each chapter.Chapter one discusses "The Living Organization," and offers a biological metaphor for understanding organizational evolution.Chapter two "Spirituality as a source of wisdom," addresses directly the main focus of the book and offers both definitions of spirituality and examples of how it is reflected in specific business practices.Chapter three, "People--The Only Sustainable Competitive Advantage," discusses the difficulties of personal transformation within organizational contexts that privilege material over human resources, and illustrates how individuals can successfully empower themselves to become agents of change.Chapter four, "Service--An Unconditional Commitment to Others," points to the value of challenging and redefining our conception of ourselves in relation to others, and the potential that committing one's self to service can have for both individual and organizational transformation. Chapter five, "Organizational Self-Awareness--Know Thyself," explores the critical connection between communication and culture that defines the problems and possibilities of organizational change and development in an increasingly diverse and global business economy.Chapter six, Wisdom--YourSoul Connection,"illustrates the importance intuition and personal self-reflection for overcoming limiting conditions and actualizing performance potential.Chapter seven, "The New Leadership--Spirituality," explores the critical need for visionary, transformative, and spiritual leadership, and how these approaches reflect both normative principles and practical outcomes. In the final chapter, "The Future--A Call for Action," Guillory challenges us to rethink the world of work and our place in it, and the impact of our personal and professional works on the world in which we live.Guillory paradigmatic shift invites us to consider what David Bohm described as the "implicate order" or reality, the many diverse and seemingly divergent principles and practices that implicate us in each other's lives and, ultimately, in the planet itself. Although the titles of Guillory's chapters suggest at first glance an exploration into the realm of the esoteric and the transcendent, the chapters themselves reveal concrete and down to earth discussions and examples of spirituality at work in the work place. The book is very accessibly written, and does an excellent jobtouching onmany of the emerging theoretical discussions of organizational change and development without being "theory laden."The use of personal experiences and narratives also serve to make the book extremely practical in terms of presenting concrete examples of spiritual practices. Each of the chapters also offers exercises and measurement instruments for facilitating self-reflexive explorations of spirituality in the workplace and in our lives. While at first glance this may seem like a strange mixture of science and metaphysics, a kind of "lichert scale spirituality," the exercises if take seriously serve as provocative catalysts for further understanding, and recognizing the necessity of a paradigmatic shift toward the spiritual. Guillory suggests that the economics of self-interest and personal gain have placed the planet in a tenuous position, one requiring radical change and personal transformation.SPIRITUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE offers an alternative paradigm for re-conceptualizing and re-creating the way we do business with each other, with the planet, and with ourselves. The articulation of a new paradigm is perhaps the most important contribution that this book makes to the literature on organization change and development.Unlike many of the texts in this genre, however, SPIRITUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE forces us to delve deeper into the mechanisms of culture and consciousness that undergird our business organizations and economic institutions. This is an important and provocative book that will makes a significant contribution to our understanding of how organizational change and personal transformation will be the keys to business competitiveness and development in the 21st century.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Spirituality in the Workplace is a truly inspirational book that encourages individuals and organizations to incorporate their values and spirituality into their work endeavers. The powerful ideas inside this book show how we can align the spiritual, mental and physical components of our lives to become more fully functional in the workplace. Although the focus is on values and individual development, Bill also makes a strong business case for using these principles to create excellence within an organization. His real life examples and creative insights make this a interesting and motivating read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clears away the hype on the new economy
This book provides the clearest analysis of work in the new economy of anything I've read, using Silicon Valley as the prototypical region of the future of work.It cuts through all the hype, and analyzes both the region's dynamism, but also the reasons behind the volatility, insecurity, and rise in contract/temporary employment. It provides innovative and useful suggestions for ways of increasing security for workers in the region's labor market, while maintaining the region's dynamism.Should be read by every elected official and policy maker in the country, and anyone else concerned about the changing nature of work in the new economy. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Wasted money, wasted time
That's what you get when you buy this book. The book simply reprints the same material you get in the DISC instrument. There is nothing, nothing, new here. There is no insight, no detail, no discussion on how to use the information. I use DISC constantly in my business and found this book a total waste. If you want to understand DISC go to www.discinsights.com and get their home study program. It's terrific, detailed, and provides lots of examples. I also recommend the book "The 4-Dimensional Manager." Still not as good as the above reference but at least it's worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great tool for work
As an earlier reviewer noted, this book isn't the DiSC in its purest form. However, it does provide a framework for understanding relationships at work clearly and concisely. I was introduced to the DiSC during a leadership school I attended through work, and this book provided me with the tools and framework I needed to share the model with my staff. In one-on-ones, I've been told that the process was both enlightening and useful on a daily basis.
1-0 out of 5 stars Seems to Be Far Afield from true DISC Unified Theory
While a complete well-grounded book for the public on the DISC dimensions of behavior is critically needed, Mr. Ritchey seems to have attempted to create an entirely new DISC self-assessment tool that is not based on the original framework of Marston, Jung, Cleaver, Hendrickson, and certainly not Geier who developed the DISC profile Ritchey purportedly has used for years.A publication for the masses who have been exposed to DISC behavior concepts, assessments, profiles, "tests", and tools is sorely needed. This book adds not to clarity, but to the confusion of the users of DISC tools for personal and professional growth. DISC conceptually is a strong assessment in today's marketplace.Used correctly a DISC Profile will create "miracles."Not only is the book gravely inaccurate and misleading in places (specifically the history section), it provides "tests" for the public that are invalid, unreliable, and inaccurate. I was very disappointed in this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars useless
The book does *not* tell you how to work with VSTS. It's a summary of marketing blabla praising Microsoft for what they haven't invented at all. Almost all the info has been used when VSTS was announced in 2005.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
Working with Visual Studio 2005 Team System is less about working with it and more about what it is and what it can do, and even that is not more than a simple outline, just the top of the mountain. I guess I expected more How To's and less what it is. That information is everywhere on MS websites. So I am still looking for some details on how to get it done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!Things Microsoft doesn't tell you.
Not only does this book give you a great overview of the new Team System, it also tells you things (usually as special notes or hints) that Microsoft does not.I strongly recommend this to anyone who knows VSS and is considering Team System. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh and Provocative
Initially I approached this book thinking that it told the familiar (and not particularly interesting) tale of how the endless demands of the workplace are slowly eating way at the little time that we have to spend with our families or just ourselves. Well, this is NOT that tale.Rather, Professor Hochschild explores and succinctly describes how the workplace has become the dynamic community in our lives, to the exclusion of all else and at a price. The reasons have little to do with "work becoming unmanageable;" rather, it is"work becoming community."I find her ideas provocative, eye-opening and remarkably non- ideological, as it is simply reportingwhat is happening in our Country and to some extent throughout the world.Anyone who runs around 24/7 with a cell phone, beeper, blackberry, etc.knows what I am talking about. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes You Think About Your Priorities
At times people feel stretched between the needs of family and work. The Time Bind by Hochschild addresses that dilemma and provides insight into the vicious cycle perpetuated by the American lifestyle. This will make you think about your priorities.

2-0 out of 5 stars tedious and dry
While it is commendable that the author avoids the verbal fakery, jargon and obfuscation so common amongst academic authors, it is hard to imagine a flatter, duller narrative. The evidence on offer here is anecdotal and therefore of limited value, and since the anecdotes are so mundane, there seems little reason to read the book. Most adults can furnish their own supply of similar stories, have already come to some of the same conclusions, and won't find the insights very insightful.Sociology remains thin stuff. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars John Beck Gets Gamers
As a member of the millennial generation, I grew up with video games values and the internet. Now as a professional, I find that my supervisors sometimes do not understand me. John Beck understands the essence of my generation, and has written a book that helps individuals such as my supervisors understand me better.
1-0 out of 5 stars Try that again?
First a little background... I'm 53 with a preteen son. I'm not quite a Luddite.I make my living from an online business that I own and operate. Our "big" present to our son last Xmas was a computer -- one he and I were going to build from scratch. The main use of the computer was going to be video games and school work. We gave our son a budget (not big by gamer PC standards) to shop for the parts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical guide to decluttering your workspace
As owner of one of the U.S.'s largest cleaning firms, author Don Aslett has first hand experience with the way that mess and confusion can impede a good day's work. His book shines a light on the chaos, from overflowing wastebaskets to staggering stacks of paper, to (gasp!) the inside of the communal refrigerator. He reveals why out-of-control office clutter is not simply unsightly, but harmful to your productivity and your career. Then, he offers the cure, including ways to reduce paper accumulation, organize your workspace, weed through the junk and create your own filing system. He brings humor, enthusiasm and passion to tackling the daunting job you need to do before you can do your real job. If you want to be liberated from your office mess and experience the exhilaration of a clutter-free work life, we recommend this book - just put it on top of your stack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite helpful
This book is a humorous pictural guide to reducing office clutter. It offers many reasons for "86-ing" piles of useless clutter and suggests alternate solutions such as using a briefcase.
4-0 out of 5 stars very motivating
This is classic Aslett -- it will have you pitching half the papers on your desk in no time.Aslett has some good ideas on how to begin to conquer the clutter of accumulated paper, and ideas that can be used in discrete time increments.Of all the clutter / office organization books I've read, his are the only ones that actually make me eager to get to work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A networking book for everyone
You can't get bad advice from an Andrea Nierenberg book, and Million Dollar Networking is no exception. But be ready to take action. In each and every chapter there are easy examples and tips for getting started like a list of different reasons to send someone a thank you note. There's even a chapter for Introverts; a discussion of the differences between men and women; and lots of etiquette. Chock full of lots of good, and sometimes more importantly, bad networking stories, this book is a good overview of everything related to networking.
