Editorial Review

We all might manage our time better if we could get everything done inas little time as it takes to digest this nifty, palm-size, 72-pagequick-reference guide. Everything is covered here in a kind of how-to shorthand, from analyzing your current use of time, working out priorities, and using timeplanners to making instant changes (like filing paperwork, avoidinginterruptions, "filtering" information, making and taking telephone calls, andreading and writing) and managing other people's time when you're the one incharge. You'll get jiffy-quick advice on using the latest technology to do morein less time, getting more out of your meeting minutes, and even remembering howto schedule time off. On every page, boxed tips, lively illustrations, and handychecklists and flow charts bring the ideas to life. Granted, if you're lookingfor very specific or in-depth guidance, you might find this book too cursory andgeneral in its approach. But, if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to thebasics, it'll do just fine.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Get Accomplished Managing Time
How often we hear guys shrugging off casually: 'ugh, time is short, we're busy' I think, we all have 24 hours in a day, 7 days a week, yielding 168 hours per week. Take away the sleep hours and hours engaged in fetching results we desire! Hence, its wise to work `smarter' than work `harder' and this requires efficient `Time Management' Walt Whitman, the poet, said it best, "The most powerful time is when we are alone, thinking about what we are to do." Daily Planning helps us to focus on what is really crucial and important in our day to come and permits us to identify time to use wasted hours more productively. This has been my experience but when I read this book of Tim, it sure is more to Accomplish 'Managing Time' with his neat tips under various categories like :Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shortest book on Time management
Read it if you are busy. You can finish it on a single flight. Very worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small investment, large payback...
With the new year fast approaching, I'm getting that urge to spend a bit more time examining my life and what I'm doing. As part of that review, I had a chance to read Taking Control Of Your Life by Harvard Business School Press. There's quite a few gems hidden in this relatively small volume.
5-0 out of 5 stars Taking Control of your time and life and career!
This is one of the few self-improvement books I would recommend. I own a real estate business and find myself constantly interrupted and incapable of completing one days worth of "To do" lists. This book is teaching me how to really prioritize, take time off each day to think (yes, one of the most undervalued assets in the business world today to advance one's career, is to make the time to think) and strategize for better ways to live and work. It also challenges me on how to asess which meetings are advancers ofcareer and which are void of any such prospects. You learn how to empower yourself in ways that avoid endless, meaningless meetings in favor of quick phone conferences, emails

5-0 out of 5 stars A Word from the Author
Becoming and staying organized takes effort and thought, but it saves time and offers peace of mind. The not-so-great paradox is that you expend time to save time.If it's helpful, think of getting organized as preparation "to respond to life."
5-0 out of 5 stars Quick answers
I like this book more than some others that I've read on the topic of organization because it's short, it's not loaded up with a lot of text, and you can get answers in a hurry. I have trouble all the time with things stacking up and then all of them becoming more of a burden than they had been individually. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice
I found this to be a well written, concise, and very useful and practical guide to organizing your life. As there are many such books on the market these days, I looked at a number of them before chosing this book. I found this to be one of the best, addressing all the things I wanted advice about, from organizing one's home and personal life to career and the office. Overall, a fine book on the subject with much good and practical advice.

This book has the expected material on organizing yourself, your home, and your office, that you'd find in any number of books. But it also has an extremely valuable and specific chapter on how to set goals for yourself. It does not define WHAT goals you should set, but describes a usefulprocess for setting up goals and breaking them into steps to help you makea plan for reaching them. The goals chapter alone is worth the price ofthe book ... Editorial Review

Sally Helgesen has done a remarkable job of illuminating the ways the workplace has infringed upon our lives. She uses the pop-speak phrase 24/7 to symbolize the transformation of our sense of time through technology and the blurring of boundaries between work and home. Helgesen details changes including the shift from an industrial economy to a "knowledge economy"; the technology that has spawned a sleepless business culture; the leaner organizations with longer job descriptions; and the domestic drama of overscheduled children and overmanaged health care and finances. The result, warns Helgesen, is not that time is getting away from us, or that work intrudes upon leisure, but that "We have forfeited ways of being that are fundamental to us as humans."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Winner!
For a self-employed writer with a major case of disorganization this book is a godsend. From the opening advice in "How to read this Book" to the final chapter "Application Strategies", this book is packed with information and useful hints. From giving me permission to start the book at any chapter that appeals to me, to the 'right-on' advice about procrastination, to the values identification exercise, 'Managing Workplace Chaos' has made my workday more productive and less stressful. And the added bonus is that the advice in this book has helped me in my life outside of work.I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
For the benefit of those who already can read with speed, comprehension, and recall, about a third of this book is redundant for you.4-0 out of 5 stars Good suggestions for overhauling one's work & life goals
Chapter Four of this book gives particularly meaningful ways to create positive change in one's outlook and attitude towards one's work life. This chapter has helped me step back and see the larger issues which truly affect the day to day detail of the workplace. One reading of this book is not enough as each chapter is packed with so many ideas and detailed suggestions for improving one workplace environment. I need to reread this book several times to take it all in.I plan to keep this book handy as a reference and motivator to put as many of the suggestions into practice as possible. Improving the quality of one's work-life and consequently home-life is a goal that I believe this book canhelp with. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite the original, but worth the read
This text was designed to update the results-oriented approach of the author's earlier book, "offering readers techniques to get more out of each precious minute."Lakein offers his insights for the future and explains how to pay attention to moments as they come along, treat time as a limited resource, and make the most of every moment. Now, four years since its publication date, the book has not fared nearly as well as one might expect from the genre's godfather.
5-0 out of 5 stars Short but memorable!
Alan Lakein wrote, HOW TO GET CONTROL OF YOUR TIME AND YOUR LIFE . . . if you haven't yet read that masterpiece, do so at your earliest convenience . . . it is still as timely as when he wrote it back in 1973. 3-0 out of 5 stars Vague
To be completely honest, I LOVED How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life, but this one will just sit on my shelf. The main message of the book (which TOTALLY reminded me of a poem book- full of wisdom, I'm sure, butdifficult to apply) was to repeat moments in your life that brighten it up. I say vague, because Lakein's not presumptous enough to say what willbring YOU joy, but leaves that respectfull distance. It left me with theimpression that I need to get outside around sunset times more.Anyway, Iguess I was just expecting suggestions on what to do while waiting for anappointment, etc. ... Merrill and Donna are in the "time management business". Because they work in Grandville (Michigan - USA) I was quite interested. Grandville is the closest harbor to my birth place. It was also Christian Diorbirthplace and childhood paradise. This would not be enough to give 4 starsto this book. In fact, even if this book looks boring to me. Very classicaltypography, layout. No illustration. Despite of all these drawbacksprofessional experience of Merrill and Donna are very helpful and clearlydistilled in this book. Buy it with Outlook 2000 software.
