5-0 out of 5 stars This is it!
I have read at least a dozen books on how to get organized, at work or in general. As a professional with a private office, I have found this book the most helpful, inspirational, and practical among those. The language is neither condescending nor folksy; the principles are clearly stated and summarized; and all advice is eminently applicable. Now I have all my office files in half a drawer and I can produce any document within seconds. The author does not require you to clean up your office in one day: you are allowed to start from today's paper piles and work backwards as needed. We procrastinators are now officially out of excuses.

4-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me
It takes time but going through the process outlined for filing information has helped.I have organized my files, both paper and computer, so I can find things in seconds instead of hours or days.5-0 out of 5 stars Barbara Hemphill helped tame my tiger!
I was not near as bad as some of the cases Barbara describes in her books, but I was pretty pathetic!I was over a year behind reconciling my checkbook, paid bills late and my finances were in a mess, because my home papers were in such disarray!I felt so out of control, I didn't know where to start.I finally spent a weekend going through 7 boxes of papers I'd moved around for years, set up files, etc. Then I found Taming the Paper Tiger.Barbara covered things from setting up a workable space to how to organize action and storage files.I now have a terrific credit rating, run the family budget, have NO stacks of unidentifiable papers, mail greeting cards timely, and even get photos mailed out to the inlaws.I have recommended this book to several friends and family members. You simply cannot run your life successfully without managing your papers.God bless Barbara Hemphill! ... Though it looks quite old fashioned to-day, it is full of sound advice that ar untemporal and international ... Hints are so well related to our human nature that you will appreciate this book whether you are chinese orfrom Albion (Michigan), the most beautiful small college in the world!

5-0 out of 5 stars Short Practical Advice
This is the first time management book I read. This book contains sections of practical advice to help you get things done. I consider it almost as good as "Working Smart" by Michael Leboeuf.

5-0 out of 5 stars My life is much more fun & balanced since reading this book!
It's truly a shame that this book is no longer stocked.Since I first read it, back in 1990, I have recycled over 8 hours, per week, back into my personal life. This is the gift of this book.I learned that timemanagement isn't simply a bunch of random techniques that allow you tospend more time at work.Instead, it's a set of a few effective principlesthat allow you to spend more time in your life.To play more.Visit more.Enjoy more. It's easy-to-read and easy-to-do.Within 7 days you'll seeand "feel" the difference in your life! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Slowing down life's pace is necessary: here's how and why!
I have been preparing lectures on stress management and came upon the work of the authors' Use of Time Project which has tracked Americans expenditures of time over decades. This book has caused me to re-think allof my assumptions, and fits in beautifully with some of the brand new bookscoming out in the wellness field, including Dean Ornish's Love andSurvival: The Scientific Basis for the Healing Power of Intimacy and PaulPearsall's The Pleasure Prescription: To Love, To Work and To Play.Timefor Life shows, in methodical yet eloquent thoroughness, that the sense ofhurry sickness and time famine is illusory and unnecessary: we in fact haveENOUGH time and money to be happy, yet we think we do not.The finalchapter is worth the price of the book: called Brother, can you spare sometime? it points out that the pace of life is a political issue, and thatthe commercialization of leisure can be critiqued and questioned, thatwhile most of us lead lives of unbelievable privilege, happiness eludes us. This does not have to be the case. This is a scholarly book, yetaccessible to the lay reader, particularly if you skip around some. Thecross cultural stuff is fascinating (eg., Japanese people work longer hoursyet don't feel the time famine like Americans do.)It is well worth thecareful reading this important topic warrants.I am indebted to Mr.Robinson and Godbey for this expression of their life's work.I am deeplygrateful, in fact. ... I've always considered myself to be a pretty well organized person. My life is full of many projects, both at work and at home. However this booksurprised me with many clever and innovative ideas I can directly apply tomy daily life to make my many activities go even smoother. The book is verythorough, and covers almost every aspect of a person's daily life wheresaving Time would be a major benefit. Thank you, Dr. Jager, for writingsuch a down-to-earth book all of us can use!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great suggestions, easy to learn and apply in daily life!
Jan Yager's Creative Time Management doesn't talk in generalities. If you work or don't work,if you are young or old, you will find her suggestions practical and easy to apply in your daily life. The major bonus in herbook is that she is willing to address the concept that our emotional stateof being plays a major part in our ability to handle and manage our timeappropriately. So few books include this component.I refer back to thebook from time to time, (no pun intended), to specific sections to help memake changes in my own life that will benefit better use of my time.As aprofessional speaker and trainer, I recommend this book to my audiences andclass participants as an excellent resource. We all need a guide like thisto read and refer to in order to help balance our busy lives. ... Editorial Review

Work, for most of us, is something we do, not something we think about. We may wonder whether our work is sufficiently stimulating, whether it brings in enough money, or whether it makes a difference in the grand scheme of things, but we don't often question what, in fact, work really is, and why we work in the first place. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Prof. Ciulla tackles this central component of Life from different directions. The book will make you think and maybe even change your preferences in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes use of myriad areas to exemplify values and attitudes
This book explores the over-worked state of Americans today and why people work at all. The author helps readers discover the values and attitudes expressed in their jobs using history, literature, popular culture, and personal anecdotes. Many good insights.
4-0 out of 5 stars A more optimistic 'Nickel and Dimed"
Sciulla's book avoids policy conclusions, and other theoretical certainties as other books like Fogels' 4th Awakening. She notes the interesting point that "Today, clock time measures events" in the past events measured time. For example, in Magadascar a half hour was measured by the time it took to cook rice. She became interested in the nature of work when she subsidised one job teaching philosophy with another as a waitress in a restaurant. Ms. Ciulla is particularly struck by the fact thatt wealth has not brought happiness. People continue to want to earn a living. Even when people have enough to live on, many of them continue to want to work, remaining perplexed at the fact that while life is supposed to be easier, many continue to seek meaning through employment. However, she notes, employment provides a schedule and a rythm for daily life and serves as an outlet ofr greater forms of community participation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas - Great Book
Keeping things organized and getting things done have always been difficult for me.I found Don's book very easy to read.It has some phenomenal tips and practical ideas that can be implemented right away.In today's hectic world, it is refreshing to find a book that helps to make life easier.I keep it by my nightstand and refer to it frequently, as it can be read straight through, or in bits and pieces by subject matter. The back of the book has a wonderful index that makes it easy to find what you're looking for. There is also a preferred reading list and a list of useful web sites.I recommend it for anyone who needs more organization in their life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Do It!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Perspectives on Basic Principles
Up front, three key points. First, this is a handbook. Wetmore wrote it to be taken in hand and, once its contents have been absorbed and digested, put to practical use. Second, he brings some fresh perspectives to core concepts (about time, information, and communication) which have been been around for thousands of years. Third and finally, this book and any of the other excellent books which cover much of the same material are essentially worthless if those who read them do not make [begin italics] and then sustain [end italics] a long-term commitment to continuous improvement while using the tips, tools, and techniques recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great motivational tool!
I purchased this book because of its small size, knowing nothing of the author--just needed a time management tool or a refresher of the basics. It was just what I needed this week.In fact I was so busy putting most of the suggestions to work that I haven't finished it yet. I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for the entire year
I would buy it again. It covers every month of the year from school papers to dust on the molding to your makeup and fashion to organization
5-0 out of 5 stars From Christmas to Income Taxes
This is a book that can be of help to frantic folks, both female and male. I first heard of it around the Christmas holiday, and it was helpful in sorting out the growing number of tasks that my wife Chris and I want to do, and to do that during the absence of the sun in our home town of Barrow, Alaska.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Do-Able" Segments Are The Key Here
As a professional writer, I've learned that if I say:"I'm going to write Chapter 1 today," chances are it won't get done.BUT, if I give myself a goal of "I'm going to outline Chapter 1 and flesh out my characters," I have a much better chance of accomplishing that "do-able" goal.Well, this book is the hallmark of listing do-able tasks--nothing overwhelming, nothing particularly difficult--but all designed to make your life less hectic, less distraught and of course, less frantic! So what if you don't get through the entire list?!?The authors understand you very well may not--but even if you don't, they're supportive and encouraging. You feel as if you're being helped--not lectured to or berated.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE ONLY MANAGEMENT BOOK YOU NEED TO READ
I started my management career in 1970 and was lucky to have attended a 2 day seminar in 1972 from William Oncken and I have read all his books. Once you read his work you quickly realize that you never have to read another management book again. His understanding of human nature and the real dynamics of organizations is profound. His work is as relavant now as it was 30 years ago. This is a must read for anyone trying to get ahead in corporate America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get More from your subordinates, give more to your manager
Funny, memorable and inspiring.5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and all inclusive approach to managment.
Oncken has condensed time managment, functional managment, peer communications, project/task mangement and control and oraganizing the content of a job to maximize the effectiveness of the manager and his/herteam.This is the only course I've been exposed to (in over 20 years) thatis not only practical, but blends the various activities andresponsibilities of management into a cohesive useable philosophy and workethic. The 'monkey theory' is easily adopted with a minimum of fuss.Billpromises that after a two day seminar you will NOT be saddled with two moredays of work, but within one day of applying the tools learned during theseminar you will be caught up.I SUBMIT that reading the book and usingthe principles presented will net the same results.A job that becomessimultaneously controllable, fun and effective. ... I started to type out a wordy/lengthy review of this book but then decided it would be much better to make a brief statement as to why I thoroughly ENJOYED it:3-0 out of 5 stars Just not the state of the art
Don Aslett's books on cleaning and home organization/design are indeed classics. However, currently, there are indeed, much better books that can help with coping with time by S. Covey, L.B. Jones, B. Tracy, J. Davidson, and K. Gleeson.

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes you think about what you do....
If you enjoy Aslett's books on clutter, then you'll probably enjoy this one too.It has many tips scattered throughout that I've found useful in managing a home, a job, a family, and a gazillion interests.I disagreewith him on some details, but I found a lot to think about and try out inmy own life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Undoubtedly, the best in the genre...Must-Read for all busy professionals!
Just a few years after I have started my strategy consulting business (as well as my own book-store) in the early 90's, I spotted a review of this book, 'The Personal Efficiency System (PEP)', in Success Magazine. I bought it immediately & have reread it many times. A few years later, came the second book, The 'High-Tech Personal Efficiency System' by the same author. I bought it immediately too & have read - & refered to - it several times.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to organize your computer
The author uses a great approach: first get your low-tech materials organized, and then move onto the high-tech materials. There is a parallel structure applied to both paper and electronic resources, which is really great for organizing.Great book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good for computer novices, Bad for computer-savvy people
If you already have Gleeson's "The Personal Efficiency Program : How to Get Organized to Do More Work in Less Time," don't buy this.It has pretty much the same information. It's not "high-tech" atall. Most of the book is like a Computer 101 class. I'm quitedisappointed, since I was looking for ways to organize my electronicresources, NOT "how do I create a folder in Win95." ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too obvious for me
I think this is best for people who have some major blind spots when it comes to other people's responsibilities and to their own boundaries. Yes, it gives examples and solutions. But it all seemed obvious. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a time management book
A lot of books about organizing only deal with time management. In thisbook, the author deals with other types of disorganization. I had to laughwhen I read the part about the deceptive chaos creating boss. I now thinkof that former boss as only a guy with nothing more than a clean desk and aleather Day-Timer. On the surface, he looked organized, in reality, he wasnever prepared for many of the meetings.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am saved.....
