4-0 out of 5 stars The value of stories
As a trainer in the financial services industry, I often use stories to help me convey complex topics.I enjoyed reading Mr. Gargiulo's book as it supports my approach, but also triggers some thoughts on new/different ways to incorp & leverage the power of stories in my training and educational programs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Story Behind the Story
At last we have a definitive study by an original thinker who understands the difference between having something of value to say and having to say something. Terrance Gargiulo takes the reader by the hand and walks them through a garden of delightful stories told by real people in real businesses. Their powerful descriptions of what it's like to make critical decisions under pressure are crafted in story form, so that the reader is both enlightened and entranced. The final chapters of his book are are competency builders of first-rate quality, showing step-by-step how to improve your powers of observation and reflection so that you too can tell great stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Story Themes and Structure Demythologized
As a corporate presenter and technology coach I often get asked to construct themes and prepare story spines for important presentations. For me, Gargiulo's work is a terrific guide in devising a beginning, middle and end structure to match any client's business aim, be it organizational, strategic, market driven or entirely different.Gargiulo has a knack for understanding how stories can enrich and empower communication of all kinds, but in the generally dry corporate environment, they can be an important catalyst for change and deeper communication.I particularly liked Gargiulo's nine basic story types and what they can help the reader accomplish.Book is highly recommended for anyone seeking to broaden their communication skills in the corporate or academic arenas. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for leaders of knowledge-rich organizations.
It should come as no surprise that without knowledge, systems fail. In The Knowledge Evolution, Verna Allee focuses on an analysis of the role knowledge plays in contributing to the success of an organization.According to Allee, knowledge becomes of greater and greater importance asthe validity and strength of an organization is called into question.Without a doubt, the availability of a strong knowledge base has, in manycorporations, played a fundamental role in the company's survival.4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, introductory text.
At times, The Knowledge Evolution delved too much into semantics and ontology, in an attempt to develop a "common language". At the time of publication (1997) this may have been relevant but the prevalenceof "knowledge management glossaries" reveals that indeed a commonlanguage has emerged, making this specific content a bit of an arduousread. Perhaps a second edition is needed, especially since the proprietaryvalue of this book is still not being addressed in current knowledgemanagement (KM) literature. Current KM books almost exclusively focus ondata, information and knowledge (DIK). The Knowledge Evolution visions pastDIK and adds complex dimensions of meaning, wisdom and philosophy to theknowledge framework. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Framework for building and creating knowledge.
An excellent treatment of the subject matter.Provided insigts on knowledge learning and performance. Prepares us for the knowledge era, where knowledge is king. I wish she had included some material oncreativity, having knowledge is nice but being creative is better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Creating positive organizations and outstanding results
There are a lot of books on organizations, but nothing like this book.It goes to the core of what it takes to build an enthusiastic and committed group of people who can consistently produce great results. There is fabulous material in here for leaders and staff alike. The concepts are insightful, and there are plenty of applications. If this book was widely read and applied, organizations of all types and sizes would be revolutionized from the inside out.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too little content
I was disappointed by this book. There is very little valuable content, and that little is stretched and repeated on and on in order to fill more than 200 pages. All together, a boring, badly written, repetitive book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
A loyal employee will always show up bodily, but committed employees direct their minds and spirits to the organization's goals. Therein lies the premise of James R. Lucas' compelling and original book. To truly motivate a workforce, he proposes, you must appeal to something deeper than performance reviews, employee manuals and monetary rewards. You must harness the passion of your employees to the goals of your organization. In other words: Lead don't manage. While some experienced (dare we say cynical?) managers might grow impatient with the slightly fuzzy, optimistic tome of Lucas' book, the bottom-line commandment that managers should consider the goals, devotions and beliefs of their employees when choosing tactics for motivating a workforce cannot be disputed. We [...] recommend this outstanding treatment of the nature and nurture of employee motivation to anyone who stands higher than the first step in the reporting line.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evaluation from a new, more powerful perspective!
This book presents a convincing case for changing the purpose and methodology of organizational evaluation. The old 4-stage Kirkpatrick model may have been fine for the industrial age, but in the era ofknowledge, globalization and learning organizations, it is no longer validor valuable.Evaluative inquiry is the road to the 21st century.

1-0 out of 5 stars Puhhhhh-leeeeze...
Okay, I was forced to buy this book for class. Boy, is it bad. And I mean HORRIBLE. Let me save you 250+ pages of mindless torture:You work with four types of people (the R factor). The overwhelmed, in need of therapy and a trip to Monster.com. They avoid, confuse, abuse others due to their innate unhappiness. The Entrenched-miserable to be around, won't lift a finger to change, help, or pick their nose for that matter. The BSer-no need for explanation there. And the golden child, the learner. Okay, now lets pretend you are a "Learner" in a BS organization-what should you do? So there you have it-you do the exponential square roots and see how many combos of that balderdash you can come up with. How did this get published? I'll keep this anonymous, because my professor, who skims Amazon for "who moved my cheese" type reviews to plagarize for his book, may come accross this, and I don't have my grade yet. ... Read more

Given the pedigrees of the *two* authors (Peter Handley and the Michael Lawlor) this book *should* have been an absolute knockout. But it isn't.4-0 out of 5 stars A glimpse into the methods of truly great trainers.
When I found myself purchasing multiple copies of "The Creative Trainer" this holiday for bright young students who have a passion for training, I knew this book deserved a review. I have discovered the healingbenefits of Accelerated Learning and NLP applied to corporate training forseveral years, and this is the best review and application of thosetechniques that I have found. Its attributes include:Well organized, easy to read, extremely useful reference section, and a score of briefintroductions to the valuable tools and techniques it could take years todiscover on your own. 5-0 out of 5 stars The new small world
I was delighted to grab a better understanding on global competitiveness and the new productive opportunities provided by the Metanationals.3-0 out of 5 stars Finding knowledge in unlikely places
What does a large company need to concentrate on for sustained success in a globalized world? Doz and his colleagues claim that it is to become metanational and to become good at innovating from a platform of bringing together knowledge from many different parts of the world. Metanationals differ from globalized companies in that they recognise that new ideas, products or directions may originate somewhere other than the corporate centre.5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for international business
This is one of the most refreshing books about managing multinationals that I have read. It goes one step beyond the idea of a transnational, proposing a new model of how a company can succeed by prospecting the world for new knowledge about technologies and customer behaviour and using this to innovate. It won't be easy to implement, but the last three chapters provide a good starting point about how to make it happen. I was convinced that if we didn't try and build a metanational we would simply be left behind. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Deep theories on learning in organizations
Individuals learn by absorbing new knowledge, finding ways to apply preexisting knowledge and to avoid tactics that fail. Organizational learning is much more complicated than that; it incorporates all of the learning tactics of individuals and includes the interactions of the people in the organization. The interactions are among peers, horizontally across different responsibility levels and longitudinally across time. However, the authors opt to use a fairly simple definition of organizational learning.
5-0 out of 5 stars Normative and practive-oriented organizational learning
The burgeoning literature that has grown up around organizational learning in the past twenty-five years is either uncritical (treats the phrase "learning organization" as a catchword for whatever it is the front-running Japanese or other organizations are doing and whatever the rest of the world needs to do to catch up with them) or distant from practice, skeptical and non-perspective.5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive: how people politics stop organisational learning
This is the definitive book on how people politics preventorganisational learning, especially when a company needs a doubleturnround. That is a change of culture as well as strategy. Some of the early chapters are a bit heavily academic, but the pursuit is worthwhile if you want to understand how many big old western organisations stop working - instead of reinventing themselves - whenever a competitor dramatically changes the rules of the marketplace. The authors seem to imply that what they call double loop learning across every department of an organisation is both so laborious as a change process and requires such extraordinary levels of mutual trust that it might be better to raise an old organisation to the ground, and start from scratch. Their research is full of evidence why the last two decades have seen so much downsized leadership. One question that occurs to me is will their pessimistic conclusions hold true now that companies can use internal media like intranets to turn all employees' thinking around at the same time? If you would like to discuss this or other provocations relating to this work, I would be delighted to help form an interactive book discussion club.Read more
