5-0 out of 5 stars This is a fascinating concept
Dear Dr Rampersad, I completely read your English book - Total Performance Score card. This is a fascinating concept. The processes involved in implementing TPS have been explained very simply using simple language. It is indeed a revolution in thinking to keep the 'integrity' as the core area around which other processes are developed. This is an essential part of any management concept for without integrity and commitment any new initiative is bound to fail. -S. Ramachandran, Human Resources, Ramco Systems Ltd, Chennai, India

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Rampersad's processes bring organizations face-to-face with their own moral fiber
"Dr. Rampersad's book is just as timely an exhortation to American business as was In Search of Excellence. In this case, the survival of corporations depends on possessing an integrity that can both fuel their drive for performance
5-0 out of 5 stars A desperately needed direction that management of organizations should adopt
"Total Performance Scorecard is a desperately needed direction that management of organizations should adopt. It stresses the importance and need of developing an organizational structure and philosophy that combines the goals and aspirations of the individual with those of the company. It is a melding process, which results in a corporate culture that is both individually and organizationally driven. The concepts embodied in this management concept

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Learn It!
A few days ago, I finished reading Roger Schank's latest book, Lessons in Learning, e-Learning, and Training, and I've recommended it to everyone with whom I've spoken at any length since. If you follow Roger's work, you won't find many new concepts. What's new is that Roger has chiselled his messages in bold relief so that only the totally clueless can fail to get the point. He eats his own cooking by bringing his material to life through compelling stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars A reference book for anybody interested in Knowledge and Learning Mgmt!!!
I liked so much the Knowledge and Learning management holistic approach of the book. In other words i havent seen before any textbooks dealing in an integragted way with knowledge and learning management. Most of them discuss e-learning which in fact is a stupid term!!! What means e-learning? Learning Mgmt is very nice term.
5-0 out of 5 stars Surprising VERY GOOD!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical guidebook
While there are a number of books with marvellous content about the theory of communities of practice, this is the one that I go back to over and over again for practical, step-by-step guidance.
1-0 out of 5 stars thick clotted prose
This book is comprised of the kind of writing Sockel calls "thick clotted prose". After decades of reading the clear, unadorned, precise and excellent English of The Economist, I have become intolerant of pretentious layered jargon. What, for example, does this sentence say, which could not be said in simple words: "The organization's objectives, responses, and business models should be calibrated on the basis of its capabilities." Perhaps it could have been: "Organizations should do things they are good at." If this thick clotted prose had coagulated into high scholarship, I might have bothered to read on. Alas, that was not the case. The authors write, in a gesture alluding to scholarship: "Evidence shows that customers are demanding clearer information from their solution providers..." What evidence? It was not given, nor references to studies showing it. Read this book to find out how not to write.

4-0 out of 5 stars Action Reading
For over the past hundred years there has been the debate over whether leadership is a competency that can be trained and fostered or whether it is an innate skill that individuals are born with. Dotlich and Noel add fuel to that fire as they assert that there is a mechanism called Action Learning that can create within organizations the necessary shifts in attitudes and behaviors at the leadership level for substantial organizational renewal. Action Learning, simply stated, is fostered experiential learning. In that there is nothing new here. What is new, however, is the way in which Dotlich and Noel have created a "whole body" syllabus for organizations that includes key learning activities that are tied to business objectives.5-0 out of 5 stars Great approach to an important subject
The authors have done well in this book. They show the importance of leader development, as well as how easy it is to get you and your organization pointed in the right direction. As a trainer, I know that theprinciples discussed are valid and implementable.3-0 out of 5 stars Dumbed down for the average reader

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking the Leap
Books on vision are often dry and word-intensive. I was amazed at how this book was able to create a truly humorous book, while still communicating some very deep and essential concepts. I laughed my way through this delightful tale, and yet came away motivated to make positive changes in my life and to pursue my dreams. This was very easy to read, so much so that my 9 year old read and enjoyed it...but it is not a children's book per se...the messages are aimed towards adults.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!
Action Learning in Action Action learning has been around since the 1930s, but it can be used to improve organizations today. Michael J. Marquardt shows how. Basically, four to eight people work together to solve a problem, reflect on what they learn as they proceed and then implement their solution. Marquardt offers a clear step-by-step process and a few case histories. His focus on the original methodology may be a little heavy, but he aims to distinguish action-learning groups from multi-problem-oriented teams and work groups. The book is well organized, but if you already know about team building, leadership development and learning organizations, you'll be walking on familiar ground. That's why we at getAbstract.com recommend this book either to those who are so immersed in group learning that they find new nuance in everything in the field, or to those who are fresh to the subject, who will benefit particularly from the helpful charts, lists and illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Action learning to all cultures and all kinds of people."
"It is the challenge of this book", M. Marquardt writes, "to provide a comprehensive overview of the true principles and successful practices of action learning as it has emerged on a worldwidebasis...For many organizations around the world, action learning hasquietly become one of the most powerful action-oriented, problem-solvingtools, as well as their key approach to individual, team, and organizationdevelopment. Organizations as diverse as Exxon, General Electric, TRW,Motorola, Arthur Andersen, General Motors, the U.S. Army, Marriott, andBritish Airways now use action learning for solving problems, developingglobal executives, identifying strategic competitive advantages, reducingoperating costs, creating performance management systems, and becominglearning organizations."5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for those interested in action learning

Editorial Review

Ever since Hewlett-Packard emerged from one in 1939, a "garage" has come to symbolize the no-holds-barred mentality that fosters the kind of creativity that drove this company--and the dozens more it spawned--to heights theretofore unknown. 2-0 out of 5 stars All Buzz and No Bizz
This is an incredibly structured book about creativity.Although I agree with most of what he says, I find little value in this book. The thing that I disagree with most is the need for tension between bizz and buzz.I know that harmony between the two is not only acheivable but more productive.

The book benefits from amusing anecdotes but is very light on actual help for putting in place a workable framework for managing business innovation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Can't we all just get along (and together)?
The book describes another knock-off copy-cat system of the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator and the MBTI's marvellous refinement, Keirseian Temperament. Wouldn't it be great if all these copycat system people, and the MBTI and Keirsian people, could get together and admit they are merely describing the same thing? Heck, the world might actually see the truth to these systems, once they're unified. But no, I guess there's money to be made by coining a new name for something and establishing a copyright for that new name.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Enjoyabe Reading

3-0 out of 5 stars Misses the mark
Tichy described the "interactive teaching/learning process" as a form of "synergy" whereby "1+1=3" (10). Synergy is defined as the "process of mutual exploration and exchange during which both the teacher and the learner become smarter" (10). Though he uses this term to illustrate the teaching and learning process, he esteemed the four "E's" when choosing potential leaders. The criteria included the following: "Energy" (coping ability for change), "Energize" (ability to excite/inspire), "Edge" (making tough calls), and "Execute" (always delivering, never disappointing) (129). To better support his argument for interactive synergy, Tichy should have included another "E" category-- Educate (the ability to teach, mentor, and guide). Tichy, himself, framed teaching as "opening people's eyes and minds...teaching new ways to see the world and pointing them to new goals...teaching them to teach their own knowledge and teach others" (74). His statement was void of an element in interactive/circulatory teaching.
3-0 out of 5 stars Sensible advice, but repetitive, repetitive, repetitive
While I will never dispute the premise that great leaders teach, mentor and learn, it doesn't have to be repeated over and over until I get it. The hero of this book, and that is really the only way to describe it, is Jack Welch, former head of GE. There is a lot of ink used to laud Welch and what he did at GE. While I don't dispute that Welch deserves to be acknowledged as a great leader, Tichy comes very close to crossing the line between praising and deifying him.
3-0 out of 5 stars Robert Knowling?
I just read the intro to this book by Robert Knowling. As far as I can tell Robert Knowling was booted out of Covad having delivered dismal results. He is listed as CEO of Simbion, which according to Hoovers has 1-5 employees and $50-$100K in revenues. He is even featured on the cover. Am I missing something? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Willie Pietersen gives us great strategy AND great practice
Willie Pietersen's Reinventing Strategy contains the basics of strategy, i.e., how to win, how to align the organization behind the chosen strategies, how to be sure that superior insights drive the strategic process. If that alone were his contribution, this book would be a significant contribution to the strategy literature.5-0 out of 5 stars Every Manager Should Read This Book
I am VP at a large consumer products company in Ohio and I found this book very insightful in the areas of creating strategy and leadership.I read a lot of business books and most are very slight in what they have to offer -- a few thoughts, old stories or worn out sayings. However, "Reinventing Strategy" is a real how-to-book and goes through running a successful business step-by-step.This book will definitely help my division be more profitable! 5-0 out of 5 stars A great piece!
I'd definitely recommend it not only to the Knowledge Management professionals, but to the general public. It's a fun and easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Value Networks: Seeing the unseen value of intangibles
In today's crowded marketplace of business publications, it takes something that bit special to stand out and be noticed.A decade ago, Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline was widely regarded as one of the seminal business books of the 1990's, introducing to an appreciative and expanding audience the integrated concepts of systems thinking and the "learning organisation".This new book by fellow American author Verna Allee carries the potential to compete for similar accolades in this current decade.5-0 out of 5 stars A refreshing new look at established concepts
In this book Allee considers the changing nature, structure and identity of organizations, and the larger patterns of change that are currently unfolding in society. Taking the view that businesses are evolving into 'networked patterns of living systems', Allee observes that we require a different mindset and management tools to respond to these changes. This new mindset includes thinking of organizations as living systems, understanding the principles of networks and how they operate, taking a 'whole-system' view of the organization, understanding how intangibles go to market, and the significance of value networks, people and relationships.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Performance opened up
This book is a gem for anyone thinking about how organizations work. The chapter on organizational performance alone is well worth the price of the whole book: For example, "It is not clear tht organizational purpose can be portrayed as unitary, or that the multiple purposes of an organization are reliably constant." This opens the door for intelligence, as interpretation in context, rather than simply as the result of the detached number-crunching rampant in today's organizational studies. Other chapters are very "quotable" also; March has enough status in the field to have attracted notable and articulate co-authors for various sections. I am personally interested in how March and colleagues discuss the role of storying in organizations. I wonder to what extent March et al. still hold out for a truth beyond the stories, or whether they are able to see the truths within them. That just goes to show that this book is capable of clearly describing the essential concerns of organizations in general, and management in particular, while also sparking ideas and debates. Read it, please, then let's engage the ideas by sharing our own stories. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is really about effective teaching online and building online communities of practice
I first heard about this book in the Harvard Business Review under the topic of peer-to-peer leadership training. It is that and more.It describes a great method of building communities of practice online and how to effectively lead online discussion forums.I am a better online teacher because of the lessons from Ms. Dixon. These ideas are not just for Army leaders but can be applied to any group which is distributed but needs to share knowledge and stay connected.I eagerly await the second edition! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs up for this great teaching tool!
I manage an office of 70 lawyers that needed team building skills, but have a deep scepticism about the usual drills.I found this book to be clearly written, well organized and easy to adapt to my training needs. We used several of the games at a recent office retreat to great success.Istrongly recommendGames That Teach Teams to anyone who wants to get theirteam to work, and play, bette
