2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I'd hoped
This book did not teach me nearly as much as I'd hoped. It gives a very superficial outline of a lot of topics, but somehow when I finished, I didn't feel like I'd learned anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars a MUST for future law students
I have purchased a number of law-related books from Amazon, but this book is by far the standout of the bunch. It systematically covers all of the major topics covered in the courses offered at every law school in the US comprehensively, even explaining the case briefing process. This new edition incorporates actual case law, allowing you to sample the work done at law school before actual signing your loan check and taking the plunge. Dunham clearly explains all of the basic terminology and principles underlying the first year of law school, providing the law student-to-be a firm foundation and a peace of mind before starting classes. I recommend this book without reservation to ANYONE interested in law school or interested in bulking up on their knowledge of the substance and form of law in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Interesting Textbook I Ever Read
I ordered this book as a requirement for an introductory paralegal course and was at first a little aprehensive about the books thickness.I started out knowing absolutely nothing about the law, the government, or the internal workings of the legal system. This book teaches the beginnings of modern law and the influences of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. The basics of many common areas of law are also covered such as contracts, probate, property, torts, criminal law, family law, and many more. This book teaches a great amount of useful information in an easy to read and easy to understand format.Plenty of possible real life scenarios are used as examples as well as real cases to help you dive deeper into the subject you are trying to grasp. This is the first school textbook I've ever actually enjoyed reading from.Key terms are boldened for easier reference and studying. For anyone interested in learning about a variety of beginning law topics, it is definately an investment worth making. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not boring but not well-organized either
The title and book cover tells you it's not a boring book. The contents are not boring as well.A bit of wisdom here and there worth carrying with you on your next chit chat on strategy but I had a hard time with the book's flow.
5-0 out of 5 stars Business strategy, with a wry twist
You've never read a business book quite like this one. Often with tongues planted firmly in cheek, authors Henry Mintzberg, Bruce Ahlstrand and Joe Lampel tap a variety of sources in illuminating the frequently nebulous topic of strategy. The essays, anecdotes and quotes are unique, insightful and sometime humorous. And the book is not just nontraditional and cute: it also provides plenty of good, solid information on strategy. We recommend that you go ahead and take a big bite. Chew slowly and savor the flavor. It goes down easy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing View of Strategy
good book to read on strategy as it makes you think, takes you out of your comfort zone and is a little zany. I like it. They dont take themselves too seriously and strategy either. It is written and compiled so that the stories are short and to the point and by different authors and thinkers in the world of strategy. Good diverse look at the topic ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!
As I began this book I thought at first it might be a little "cheesy" but a little further into it I realized what a great book this was.It left me with some good ideas as a Manager. It was short and to the point but very motivating as well and definitely proved that positive leadership is what motivates people!

3-0 out of 5 stars Commonsensical ..... BUT
Pros:
3-0 out of 5 stars good or not so good?
this book is pretty funny, one could read it in 40 minutes, gain a lot... but on the other hand is it worth the price? although the content is powerfull it relies on a kind of nearly disney world where everything is nice, happy and easy. each page leads to a mantra to apply, it is important to stress all of these, but as for a lot of management content it is basically just being sound and practical. so because it is well written and funny to read beside its valuable content it deserve 4.5 stars, but on the ohter end it is sometimes too easy and things fit too well that it could only get 3. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must have' for any consultant who works with teams.
I won't write a detailed review, here's what I found helpful:
3-0 out of 5 stars Skip the text and go to the exercises
This so-called sequel to The Wisdom of Teams is a "workbook" with exercises. It offers no new insights/guidance for readers of the 2002 paperback update of The Wisdom of Teams.
3-0 out of 5 stars Nice overview, but lacks concrete guidance
This book excels at drawing the line between leader-driven and team-driven groups of individuals. It also characterizes some of the failure cases very well -- teams that are too large, teams that don't have a clear vision and purpose, teams that are disconnected from the rest of the organization, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes!
I sat at the bookstore reading this book and nodding, saying "Yes, this author knows! He gets it, he gets it!"5-0 out of 5 stars Deming All Over Again - We Never Learn
Although he captured me with his initial quote from Shakespeare's Richard III as rationale for a practical means to insure corporate survival, I found Peter Block to be the most refreshing thinker I've yet had the privilege to study.I used this book in a Doc course where we included a fairly lengthy conference call with Block, thus giving our rather small cohort (12 of us) a good opportunity to quiz him on some of the gritty application details.I must admit that I finished the course with a distinct impression that Block may well be the next Deming.Unfortunately, the mistakes of the past seem to be repeating in that although a new generation of managers understands his philosophy and may be buying into it at a fairly respectable pace, the bulk of corporate thinkers are just not willing to jeopardize the thinking that got them into place. The problem is typical....one of my earliest lessons in administrative thinking was a CEO who told us to use that new CQI process because he was going to foster change in our org.....right up to where he told us to find a way to make sure the results of the process met his goals for the org.Read more

Editorial Review

Rosabeth Moss Kanter will convince you that the goal of winning is not losing two times in a row. In her view, success and failure are not events, they are self-fulfilling tendencies. "Confidence is the sweet spot between arrogance and despair--consisting of positive expectations for favorable outcomes." says Kanter, a Harvard Business School Professor and author of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Accountability, Collaboration and Initiative!
Confidence, as argued by Rosabeth Kanter, is not a state, it is a trajectory. Whether you look at a sports team, a business, a nation, or an individual, they are all subject to the cyclic nature of decline and improvement. 'Losers' find it harder to attract talent, start new projects, or even keep up the daily operations; 'winners' have the advantage of the halo effect which hides weaknesses, attracts talent, and fuels further growth. The author analyzes these self-fulfilling prophecies (Pygmalion effect) and what it takes to reverse them through the cornerstones of confidence (as identified by R. Kanter) - accountability, collaboration, and initiative.
1-0 out of 5 stars Makes Harvard Look Bad
This is one of the worst written books I've had the displeasure of reading.I can spare you the misery.Companies recover from slumping quarters and dissapointing returns by increasing their communication, co-operation and collaboration. That's the entire book in one sentence. The hubris that wreaks from this book is denser than the arrogance it oozes on each page. The text suffers from redundancy to the millionth degree, by the way.I vote less than one star, however Amazon forces a one star minimum.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Book
Generally geared towards leadership and organizational traits, this book was useful. One fault I can comment on is that there was an over-emphasis on sports analogies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Deep
This is a book to be savored slowly. Fundamentally, the book is about organizations, and why all our modern organizations aren't working so well these days.
1-0 out of 5 stars Leadership and the New-Age Science
On its face, this book seems to be on to something. The social sciences have long adapted ideas from the natural sciences, so why not look to current natural science and see what it could teach us?Unfortunately, she misquotes many parts of the scientific theories she examines and takes them in directions that they do not warrant. This is not good science.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Tipping Point" Book Vital to Government, Not Just Business
This book is beyond five stars, and not just for business, where it is receiving all the praise it is due, but within government, where it has not yet been noticed. It was recommended to me by the author of "Building a Knowledge-Driven Organization," and I now recommend it to everyone I know.If there are two books that can "change the world," these are the ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective, step-by-step map of the process.
As a professional planning consultant, I've recommended this book many times to my clients. It is the best, most thorough and step-by-step map of the process of putting a board together that is available to my knowledge. Anyone with a closely held company who is considering putting an outsideboard together (and most should), this is the place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive guide to creating boards.
This is an extremely practical, thorough, study about how privatecompanies can use boards to enhance their governance systems. The fact thata family owned compay does not have the legal obligation to have a boardobscures the fact that boards are extremely useful management instruments.Prof. Ward shows the way to using this instrument efectively. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Looking for the basics in CR, this is your book!!!
This is a great intro to the skills of a mediator, or just a human being in this day and age.Daniel Dana is a leading teacher in this area.Anyone who is looking to attain this skill will be greatly served by reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy book for resolving conflicts.
This book gives the main points in simple language that anyone can understand.Further all the points and key terms a mediator needs to remember are hightlighted and enclosed in boxes on the relevant pages.5-0 out of 5 stars Usable information
I found this book to be of tremendous value. Conflict Resolution is an easy to read resource that is full of practical information that can be applied immediately on the job. It is not only a must-have for managers and supervisors, but also an essential resource for anyone who would like to have more effective relationships and live a conflict free life. Daniel Dana writes with a friendly and often humorus style and it is clear that he has a vast knowledge of this topic. He has a great ability to take a complex subject and make it simple and easy to use with specific "how-to" steps, and that really makes this book valuable to me. I have now successfully used the resolution approaches outlined in this book both in my profession as a consultant and trainer, and in a family conflict situation that was causing a lot of pain. Additionally, the ideas in this book have worked for me in both one-on-one conflicts and group conflicts. The bottom line - this works. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong book.
I have asked for The 11th edition. This is the 10th edition.5-0 out of 5 stars Critique of Organizational Behavior by Mr. John W. Newstrom
I like the book because it is complete and easy to understand. It gives a lot of insights on how one's behavior is manifested. The structured presentations are accompanied by real life experiences. It is an easyreference guide even for a novice in organizational set-up.The only partI would like to suggest is that the authors should show an answer chapterfor the quentions given in the end of the chapters especially in the casestudies.I find it very interesting to know how the authors would solvethe organizational problems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very organized
The principles of organization are very well presented here. Not too many anecdotes, but enough to get the point across. Also, this book lists the basic principles of home organization in an easy-to-read and easy-to-reference manner.A very practical how-to book!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
I used this book when I was trying to get my new house organized. It had helpful ideas for each room in the house. It was a long book...but was easy to read. You can also jump from chapter to chapter depending upon your current needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for the clutter-afflicted who want their lives in order
My family raised me in an insanely messy environment. My father is likely one of the worst packrats alive, and my mother continuously hides her junk in countless bags. A few years ago I realized my own extreme clutter was a reflection of the disarray in my mind and, cyclically, reason for even further confusion. Perhaps this book isn't for those who already know where cleaning supplies are kept and how planners are used efficiently. But I highly recommend this book if you've not been blessed enough to have learned the aforementioned time-management skills other college students know as truisms (there is SOME reasoning behind the "for Dummies" title!). For beginners, this book will lead you section by section to a home as well as a life that finally has everything in place! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars business truth
This book really impressed me, and I am in business 35 years in New York City. Politics is a necessary fact in business although many business people will deny this. Joel Deluca emphasizes this and takes the position that within the politics of organizationsthe ethical principles that drive individual behavior in large measure also drives the outcome. He very astutelyidentifies a range ofpersonality typesand then proceeds toillustrate how effective genuinelyethical business tactics are to advancing individual goals as well as those of the business.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good to Know - How to Use
Joel DeLuca's book on Political Savvy gave me pause for thought and reconsideration on the topic of organization politics. The book provides valuable insight into human behavior and suggestions on how to effectively harness it as a tool in your kit. While it all makes sense, and is good to know, the logistics of applying the knowledge in reality will prove challenging. Good stuff, worth the quick read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for Career Success
During the course of my career, I have worked in every size organization from the federal government to major corporations to small businesses - some of these with seemingly little politics and others as political as they come. No matter what size organization you are in, I would recommend that you put Political Savvy on your "must read" list. How often do workers, whether they are managers or worker bees, find themselves unable to move ahead because they are blocked by organization politics?
