2-0 out of 5 stars Organizational Behavior, 11th Edition by Stephen P. Robbins
This is the text that we are currently using in my Organizational Behavior class. While the text is well laid out, easy to read and well-written, Robbins' tendency to blame the baby-boomer generation for all of society's modern-day problems and ethical issues is a bit much to swallow. I do not enjoy reading mere opinions that potentially carry the weight of fact by students when presented in a text-format by a "OB professional" and not presented as merely the opinion of the author. For example, Robbins states in chapter 3, page 74:
3-0 out of 5 stars Apologyfrom the seller
The book I had received from Escobook was not hardcover as it was promised. It was also an Indian edition. (No color, thin paper, no different than photocopy) I paid almost $80 for $20 book. As soon as the the seller was informed about my dissatisfaction of the product, she sent my money back.
1-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE!
If you are expecting a real version, buyer beware. The version I received through Amazon was not a real US copy, but rather the "Eastern Economy Edition".It was a "photo-offeset reproduction" which is legally for sale only in Bangledesh, Burma, etc.You can purchase these on E-bay for a fraction of what I was charged. It is a black and white version only, so pictures and graphs intended for color are much harder to read.Since it is basically a photocopy of the original, even the text is harder to read than it should be.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book for Class
I bought this book for school. So far it is alright. If one is looking into a leadership role it is a good read

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and educational book
We are using this in my Intro to Leadership course at college and I have found the book to be very interesting. The author writes very clearly and explains everything quite well. I know its weird to write about, but I really enjoy this authors writing style. I rarely get an academic book where the writing is simple and very straight forward. In a crunch, I can read the first setence or two from each of his paragraphs and understand the concepts of the chapter quite well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start with the NABC's
I suggest that the reader start with chapter 5: "It's as Simple as NABC." To me the how-to description of the value creation process is the heart of the book.Articulating the Need, Approach, Benefit and Competition sounds easy, even simplistic. It turns out to be hard, but very stimulating work togo through ten or twenty iterations until a compelling proposition is created. Why work so hard using such a simple process?I suggest that the reader go next to chapter 17: "A Foundation for National Competitiveness in a World of Abundance."To quote: "We live in a world of abundance.Only through innnovation can this abundannce be converted to growth, prosperty, and the quality of life."The rest of the chapters fill in the context for innovation and provide nuts and bolts details on implementation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practitioners guide to extraordinary customer value creation
This practical and accessible book eloquently argues that innovation is much more predictable and achievable when the right process is used to guide those involved in the innovative effort. The authors leave no doubt as to what the process is, or who is involved. It's the 5 Disciplines for Creating What Customers Want. And these disciplines involve everyone in the firm--not just a few guiding superstars.Rather then a long list of new and complex concepts, the 5 Disciplines will probably appear as common sense to most readers. The authors forcefully argue that innovation is what enables the world's inhabitants to choose between living in scarcity or abundance, and that the best guide to innovation in the post-industrial "Exponential Economy" is to focus on Customer Value Creation (CVC).This is a book for practitioners, not theorists, although the latter will find the models offered provide fertile ground for validation and refinement. For the practitioner, the 5 Disciplines unfold in short, easy-to comprehend chapters that invite immediate application to one's current place of employment.Sprinkled liberally in the 300+ pages between the covers are suggestions for immediate application of a principle just presented and short stories that illustrate the authors' practical experience in putting their proposals into action. While SRI is most likely a place very unlike any firm at which you've ever worked, the book's slight bias towards fundamental research and innovation (vs. incremental product enhancement) entices the reader to always think first about what's most important. To, as the authors suggest in the early pages, put your innovative energy into new pain killers, not vitamins. At the end of the day, you want the results of your innovation to alleviate real pain, to not be just a genericundifferentiated "nice-to-have".This book is an excellent guide to anyone, or organization, ready to sign up to this goal.

2-0 out of 5 stars This is a BAD book on innovation

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow, what a book!
While I have read other Ken Blanchard books, this one truly got my attention and was wonderful. As a student collegiate athelte myself, Blanchard and Bowle's book was easy reading and very easy for me to connect with based on my own experiences. The book allows one to follow a main character that starts off by being fired from his job, then gets involved coaching a young hockey team and calls on a coach he remembers from his school days to assist and turn the team around. With the assistance of this "coach" the main character begins to understand what it takes to make a successful team. He realizes the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and building team pride. This is a book that you can't put down, it can be read quickly and easily and I do feel everyone would be able to associate with parts of the book.Blanchard and Bowles do a great job at using the hockey team to teach the readers about team building yet simultaneously showing how these same principles can be applied to a work site. One is taken through the steps of team building and given examples time and time again on how these steps can be applied. There are very interesting twist throughout the book that keeps one's attention.I recommend this book to everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Team work - A neccessity in any workplace
Team Work - Everyone knows the importance but yet more often than not, our own individuality gets in the way. How much more can be achieved if everyone behaves for the collective good of the group rather than for himself?
1-0 out of 5 stars For the simple minded only - and not in a good way
This book is a utopian, unrealistic, poorly thought-out, infantile piece of trash. It's an insult to the intelligence of any adult who reads it. Written at a third grade level with 16-point type, this book's contents would be better suited to a coloring book. The philosophy it presents a real no-brainer, and if you need to read this to learn these principles, you have bigger problems to worry about. The "story" is just that, a "story" - there isn't an ounce of truth or realism to it, so just file this book under "office fairy tales". Believe it or not, I'm not a pessimist, I love books, and I'm totally into "self/professional improvement" topics. But do not waste your time or money on this silly book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An educational experience
For novices to org. culture, this book takes you on a thorough journey into the corners of what constitutes an organization's culture. My favorite take-away is that Schein made an abstract concept much more concrete. He creates a nice framework to view org. culture, gives examples continuously and provides many nuggets of knowledge.Plenty of useful references are given as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Read
This book was ideal for the doctoral class I just completed. The book thoroughly explained the salient points and provided useful information for further doctoral work. Although the book was scholarly, it was an easy and pleasant read. I recommend this book for anyone who wants a keener understanding of the organization as a system

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work
This is an excellent book. The author does a fantastic job of explaining organizational theory from a conceptual perspective. The book does not spend a lot of time discussing research methodology. The book does a great job of presenting information in a form that a manager can use in evaluating various approaches to organizational behavior issues. This volume will certainly remain an important part of my toolkit!

5-0 out of 5 stars Greate Read and Interesting New Perspective on How things work in this Jungle
I got registered onto a few networking sites like Linkedin, Orkut and Hi5 in March and suddenly started thinking about term Network in social context. Being a computer engineer by profession and having worked on communication networks for last 5 years it was quite obvious to find parallels. And then I stuck upon this book. I must say i wasn't disapponted. Each Ideas has been built with convincing examples and is well supported by results from ongoing research being done by author. I would wait for him to write something on dissemination of information through social networks and network dynamics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read at the 1 year mark after Fish! 1
As a manager in a government agency, I utilized the first Fish! book with our team as a part of our Manager's meeting last year this time. It was widely regarded as the best meeting we've ever had. Everyone loved it. Everything that the first book indicated would happen did. It was really pretty awesome. We are now widely regarded as the the best shops in the state, largely because of the practices we put in place with the first book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Make Change Stick
The well known FISH! philosophy can be applied to the health care setting. In this series, the 6th floor of a local hospital is transformed by the FISH! philosophy started by a nurse manager. After she leaves, the health care administrators are concerned that the FISH! philosophy was just a gimick. They plan to ensure a lasting change. This is achieved by helping employees make an internal change of heart rather than only an external or pep rally type of change. The application to health care is very timely and may be very helpful to nurse managers and nursing staff, especially those who work on units with low morale.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Fish STINKS!
Chirpy ideas, bad writing.I feel sorry for the poor saps who get stuck being slaves under this motivational trash. In your job, to "make their day" is best made by giving them a paycheck, or better yet a raise. That's why people work. You have to "be there" otherwise you get fired. As for "play"?Heh.Who feels like "playing" when they feel like they're going to puke when they are force-fed this garbage at the office?

5-0 out of 5 stars An Old Favorite Brought Up to Date
This book has two real aspects.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Economics Book.
I just finished a Managerial Economics MBA course that used this text.I found it to be very well written compared to textbooks I've read for other classes.I think it does a good job explaining supply and demand, intro to pricing, and intro to strategy and game theory.Examples are used to improve the reader's "economic" intuition.I talked to a friend who just finished a differnt MBA program who used this book.He recommended the book and especially liked the strategy segments and the prisoner's dilema.
