5-0 out of 5 stars The idea of positive deviance might seem odd at first, but becomes quite powerful as you understand it
Happiness is something different than the absence of misery and health is something more than the absence of disease and debilitation. These statements are so obvious as to seem trivial. However, they are still true.If you have been fortunate to be part of an organization that was in one of those wonderful upward spirals that also involved a phenomenal team that was unified and happy, well, you know that working in such a positive environment is wonderfully different than working in an organization going through downward spiral with a demoralized team. What can be most interesting is that when the phenomenal team that experienced the upward cycle runs into a rough patch, they seem to stick together and avoid letting the rough patch develop into a crushing storm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on product development and agility around
I don't think they use the word agility once, but this book clearly enunciates all of the reasons that agile processes often show success, without prescribing a specific set of items to do. This book will enable managers of development teams to look at the product they're building, its impact on the business's bottom line, and make both long-term and daily decisions about how to run their team. Individual developers will also gain an understanding of how to better streamline processes -- for instance, people often think that introducing large processes to "prevent an error from happening again" is a good idea. However, this book will help you to learn why that can be bad; that it can introduce queues and actually result in a process slowdown, especially if it happens early in the development process and on the critical path.5-0 out of 5 stars World-class information for product development managers
I have never seen so much good advice about product development in one place.Applying concepts from manufacturing, finance, queuing theory and communications theory,Reinertsen proposes many ways in which we can design better processes for development.5-0 out of 5 stars Real thinking and action tools you can use
If you're looking for a book to arm you with the latest buzzwords and easy answers, this is not for you.If you're looking for a useful framework for thinking about product design and tools for applying principles, this is an excellent buy. This book is clearly written, well-organized, and full of useful information.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The use of process consultation to improve organizations
Edgar H. Schein is Professor of Management Emeritus in the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a real academic heavyweight having written numerous books, articles and papers. In 1969 he published 'Process Consultation: Its Role in Organizational Development', of which he states that he "was writing more in anger than with perspective". In this follow-up book he tried to explain and clarify the concept of consultation and helpingwhich was outlined in the first volume. "The goals of this new book, then, are (1) to reaffirm the concept of process consultation as a viable model of how to work with human systems, (2) to clarify the concept were needed, and (3) to introduce some modifications and new ideas that elaborate on the original ideas."
5-0 out of 5 stars Process Consultation Volume II Review
In this second volume, Schein builds on Volume I by dissecting the nature of process and change in lieu of the specific group processes that make or break effective group work. Likewise, in this volume, he brings the concept of process consultation home, so to speak, to help managers and leaders understand themselves and their organizations as a consultant might understand them.5-0 out of 5 stars Process Consultation Volume II Review

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable, practical guide for students & practitioners
Organisational Research Methods is an invaluable, practical guide for both students and practitioners in the social sciences. This book is particularly unique as it provides the theoretical/academic bases for research yet translates these into practical steps for how to undertake best practice research. The authors highlight a plethora of issues that researchers themselves may not have considered, and provide constructive advice for addressing each possible problem that may arise during the course of a research project. Based on their expertise and experience as both practitioners and academics, the authors provide helpful examples throughout the book that assist the reader in applying the knowledge directly to their own project.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sensemaking fails to translate theory into practice
Weick's book is thoroughly researched, drawing its insights from psychological and organisational studies. 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful insight into how people work together
This book has a very academic tone but it has some powerful implications for anyone in business. The book makes a number of points that are not intuitive but that are very powerful. For example, he talks about the advantages of speed, confidence, and plausibility in problem solving and why they may be more important than accuracy ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable reading - even for a textbook
Of course, most of us do not read organizational behavior textbooks for pleasure, but I must say that this book is actually enjoyable to read. The text provides current, relevant examples from known companies, and also cites research results for nearly every point or topic. There are many illustrations and figures to assist the reader in understanding the various OB theories, which I found to be extremely helpful. The authors even make jokes every so often and incorporate personal quips to keep the reader interested.I am in my last semester of graduate school, so I have read plenty of textbooks, and this is by far one of the best. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars English the Easy Way by Schachter & Schneiter Williams
Sorry authors but this book sucks...excuse the grammar.I really couldn't understand what the other reviewer meant by "answers", but now I do.There is no answer key.I looked everywhere for it.The only way you can get one is from the publisher and if you aren't a teacher, forget about it.If this is the case then why isn't it somewhere in bold so you don't waste $40 and precious time. The lady I spoke with at Thomson-SouthWestern said that they do it this way because they don't want school kids to get the answer key.She never could give me a reason why they offer this book to the mass public.Anyway, the book is well written but if you are not a teacher and need it for reviewing basic English don't waste you dough (money). Now I see why the 2nd reviewer gave such a good review...She/He's a TEACHER! DUH!*Happy Hunting*

5-0 out of 5 stars Very clear and well-organized
I'm using this book to teach an English grammar class, and it has been very helpful. It's easy to follow and logically laid out.I've found it better than a few other English grammar books I've seen. There are plenty of exercises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Using collaboration to meet the challenge of conflicts.
This work offers an approach to controlling costs through building collaborative strength for prevention and early intervention. The authors show that there are four basic approaches, each appropriate in givencircumstances, but only one-collaboration-that holds the potential ofwin-win outcomes. However, most organizations over-use approaches thatemploy avoidance, authority and power, which tend to prove costly, ratherthan develop and employ systems that promote collaborative resolution andend conflicts from escalating into expensive disputes. The authors take ahighly realistic approach to their subject. The book is rich in substantiveideas and method. It provides detailed guidelines for building a system andapplying the principles the authors champion. An excellent contribution, worthy of your attention. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars AI is a technique, enveloped by a theory...
Appreciative Inquiry is a method for getting the best, most positive, upbeat, and energizing images of your organization to the fore.AI contrasts to problem-focused inquiry, which usually provokes blame and evasion.A large cadre of Organizational Development and Human Resources types has developed AI, and they swear by its positive effects. The book contains nearly two dozen case examples of AI interventions, ranging from small organization to large multi-national corporations. The authors present a coherent theory (social constructionism) and method to bolster AI's techniques. It has much in common with post-modern psychotherapy, the construction of "magic solutions" ("best practices" in their terms), and centering on the individuals' perspectives (rather than some larger, "objective" truth) about an organization.3-0 out of 5 stars Elegant but with some limitations...
Appreciative Inquiry fits within recent "modern mediation theory" and Public Discourse techniques. I cannot add more to what previous reviewers have said (above), but note only that the techniques are more difficult to apply than the authors indicate and require all parties in the discussion to be committed to the end-result. AI techniques cannot work in groups where there are power vacuums or undisclosed power grabbing and coaltion-formation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Combining theory and practice with great art
With a growing literature that deals with Appreciative Inquiry (AI), a truly revolutionary way of moving our organization, in their book Magruder Watkins and Mohr have accomplished more to help organization development consultants and managers to understand the potential of AI than any other book currently in print.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!
This is a 'must read' for anyone working with groups of people of any size in any organization. Great application for business, schools, churches, volunteers, anyone wanting to motivate people with a common goal, purpose, or vision.

5-0 out of 5 stars gaining insight
I heartily recommend this book to anyone seeking insight into the peculiarities of organizational/workplace change. It has helped me understand why so many workplace "initiatives" seem doomed to failure almost before they have been launched.More important, the author provides concrete examples of remedies to prevent these failures. The author's writing style is clear, jargon-free, and to the point. The examples she uses to illustrate her ideas are clearly stated, and interesting. I read this book after reading the "The Tipping Point" (forgot the author's name, sorry) and found this book to be an excellent companion piece. It beautifully illustrates how tipping point theory is not only relevent but directly applicable to the work place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good things do indeed come in small packages.
In less than 200 pages, Dr. Shapiro provides an informative, engaging overview of change management concepts, principles and tactics. The inclusion of brief cases and summary graphics facilitate understanding and memorization of key points. As a management consultant and educator, I look forward to recommending this book to clients and students seeking practical information on making change work. ...
