3-0 out of 5 stars Good for true beginners
If you're still in college and you want to know how to create readable, clear, interesting presentations then this book is for you. It's also great to give someone on your team who may be trying to cram 8pt typeface onto all their PowerPoints. The best parts of the book describe how to lay out presentation slides for easy readability. However, if you've taken a Speech class, most of the "public speaking" sections of the book will not be news to you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Grammar/Usage Book Ever
I retired a few years ago and wish that I had taken my Gregg Reference Manual with me as a "parting gift."I used to take calls from people regarding grammar questions.Little did they know I would grab this book and easily page to the correct answer.I impressed many people over the years; and then, of course, the answers became second nature to me.I have recommended this book many times and finally am going to purchase my own copy for home.It is a good book just to read.Absolutely EVERYTHING is in there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommendations for Students Entering the Secretarial Field
As a business education teacher, I highly recommend this reference manual to anyone entering the secretarial field. It provides a complete source for answering questions concerning grammar, punctuation, English usage, etc.The well-done index allows easy access to the needed information. It is an absolute MUST for office employees. Eva Lewis, El Cajon, CA

5-0 out of 5 stars Old, but GOOD
This is a great resource for anyone who conducts training sessions, seminars, conferences, or informal meetings of any sort. No frills, just lots and lots of ideas...some to use as is, some you will want to adapt. I've used dozens of these games and every one made the point I wanted to teach. A true classic.

This really is an excellent book for finding activities to add to your training sessions. There are a lot of great games in this resource. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful overview of the Future Search Process
I found this book easy to follow and easy to understand. If you want to understand Future Search as a large group strategy, this book will be very helpful. By the time I finished the book, and it is a fast read, I felt that I had a strong understanding of Future Search and when it is to be applied.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!
In this book, Marvin R. Weisbord and Sandra Janoff describe a three-day program to help organizations develop a future plan. Their conference is designed to unite groups of people from different areas of an organization so they can create a program together that they all support. Typically, the conference includes 50 to 70 people who review the past, explore the present environment, create future scenarios, identify common ground and make action plans. The program encourages dialogue and working together as peers.5-0 out of 5 stars Search No More
No need to go any further. This the THE book to read if you are involved in planning or facilitating a future search. The authors anticipated all my questions and answered them in a clear, concise manner. 5-0 out of 5 stars Esperanto of the "Rules of Order" genre
The book is thin and exposes a limited set of rules without which anarchy becomes the hard rule.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable, For Anyone Who Conducts Meetings
Fred and Peg Francis have done an amazing job. Their book is absolutely indispensable for anyone who conducts meetings or participates in democratic discussion at any level from the parliamentary right down to school boards, environmental protection groups, churches, even book clubs or social gatherings. What the Francis' have admirably succeeded in doing is cutting through the forbidding complexities of running a meeting and reducing them to a simple set of common-sense rules which anyone can follow. With this handy guide, the frustrations which accompany many meetings can be sharply reduced and democratic participation improved. Anyone who has conducted or participated in meetings and struggled with the daunting complexities of Roberts or other rule books will be thrilled at how this little book--you can read it in an hour--will smooth out the rough edges of meetings and greatly improve the harmony and satisfaction of attendees.Over the years I have presided or attended hundreds of meetings at the governmental, business, church and social levels and have often been frustrated by the difficulties of properly chairing such meetings so that all can be heard, everyone can understand the process, and the will of the majority can be formulated and prevail. Much of the difficulty arises from the fact that few have the time or inclination to study the old-style rule books, and are therefore easily intimidated, even tyrannized sometimes, by the very few who know "Roberts" Equally distressing are meetings where the Chair is ill-informed or makes dubious rulings or is swamped by Points or Order or confusion over what are acceptable motions and amendments, when to call for a vote, and so on. By clarifying these points, the Francis' book makes an important contribution to democracy. It can be readily adopted by any group, club, church or corporation and will be of lasting benefit.Speaking personally, I have sat through years of parliamentary debate and appreciate the value, and necessity, or achieving consensus in a democratic proceeding by having rules and following them. Up until now, the rules have been exceedingly complex, often confusing, and finally unsatisfactory at many levels. From here on in, those groups who adopt Democratic Rules of Order will find significant improvement in both the tenor of their meetings and the validity of the results. (Signed) Douglas Leiterman (former parliamentary correspondent)

4-0 out of 5 stars Simplified rules of order are easy to understand and apply
This book is an example of how less is more.Aftering struggling with Robert's Rules of Order (700+ pages) and various synopsisses, I was over joyed to find this common sense guide to conducting meetings. In less than 34 pages it outlines and defines all the basic rules and procedures to getting things done. While book is perfect for those completely unfamiliar with parliamentrary proceedure, it helps even the more experienced by simplifying and eliminating the more esoteric rules.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Only Theoretical Help in Public Speaking - Not Practical
The first few tracks of the audio CD does an excellent job of identifying all of the fears of public speaking, HOWEVER the majority of advice given in this book is theoretical. The book goes into stating the individual step (the theorectical help) then gives pseudo-testimonials of how her steps have been implemented by former students towards giving a great speech.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not Helpful For Me
Yes, the 7 steps can teach people in all types of careers and lifestyles to improve their oral communications skills but some of her methods are a bit "out there".For example: learning to focus on your voice as an instrument. The CD includes examples and anecdotes from Wilder's own work, and a number of exercises to help the reader implement the ideas set forth. If you're looking to overcome your fear of public speaking, join Toastmasters and skip this CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars An effective program for overcoming your fears...

5-0 out of 5 stars Working the Room
Wow! Nick Morgan hit the nail on the head with this book on "Audience-Centered Speaking." The book came highly recommended by some very credible and talented public speakers and it delivered as promised. The author states that the only reason to give a speech is to change the world by moving the audience to take action. He starts off with the history of speech, going all the way back to Ancient Greece and brings us through time to modern communication mediums (radio and television), which have permanently and profoundly changed our expectations of public speakers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Working the Room
This should be a 'must' reading, studying, practicing, emulating, in short - the bible for those who do presentations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A STIMULATING, INSIGHTFUL, VALUABLE BOOK!
The author introduces the idea of developing a kinesthetic connection with the audience by using opportunities for making intellectual, emotional, and even physical contact. The book provides specific strategies to help presenters prepare, rehearse, and master the art of giving speeches that challenge thinking and spark action. 4-0 out of 5 stars Clear, practical and helpful.
The book was clear, practical and interesting reading. The approach was structured and logical with good examples of the different ways people use words to communicate and/or manipulate. The information on how word choices affect/influence other people, and how you can respond/compensate when the effect is directed against you were helpful and effective. One review I read felt the suggested responses were flippant and provocative.I did not agree with that viewpoint after reading the book. The responses the reviewer was referring to were directed at someone who was not truly concerned with the content of what they had said, but in the reaction they were trying to provoke.Ms. Elgin said the responses (basically to respond as if the comment had been positive rather than negative) took the fun out of what was a game to them; and I have found that to be true.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Gentle Art ofVerbal Self-Defense at work
The book is easy reading but require serious effort to follow the recommendation

5-0 out of 5 stars As with all of her books, this one's great
Elgin is probably the grandmother of verbal self-defense, and teaching people to deal more effectively with verbal abuse. In this book she turns her attention specifically to the work place. If you buy one book on how to deal with nasty abusive people in the workplace, get this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great planning resource
Since my position recently acquired the duties of meeting planning, I have found this book to be written in a manner that is easy to reference. It is written by an individual who actually did the type of job most planners hold so you get realistic and practical tips.Well written and I will definitely use on a regular basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars great overview guide
This book is really easy to follow, with checklists and short paragraphs on every area. It's a great resource for those who are getting started in planning or those who want a handy checklist to make sure they don't forget areas. Professional planners may find much of the information basic, but a good refresher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge!
Many business books provide just enough information to whet executives' appetites for more advice accompanied by high consulting fees. Author Kees van der Heijden has written an exception. His comprehensive volume puts scenario building in historical context, explains its relationship to forecasting and tells you how to introduce scenario planning to your organization. Once you understand your corporate identity and your fundamental "Business Idea," he says, you can establish and enact informative scenarios that will prepare your company for several different versions of what lies ahead. In that way, scenario planning generates better decision making. We strongly recommend this book to top managers, strategists and planners, especially those who sense they're making decisions on the fly without having a structure for thinking deeply about future implications.

The idea of the Business Idea and the huge importance Kees lays on the need for an original, differentiating business element was for me the most important lesson. I am working for a 50 year old company, active in a domain that is under severe pressure of a rapidly changing business model,
