5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful handbook for effective communication
This book is not only a comprehensive handbook for presenters, with detailed and thoughtful memos, checklists, tips and tools and questions for planning, action, surveys...It is also a masterpiece for effective communication, teaching and learning based on the author's synthesis of brain-compatible learning."The brain is meaning driven." (p.3) Aligned with the stages of learning, Jensen proposes a seven-steps brain-friendly training model: 1. Neural history.2. Learning environment.3. Context for success.4. Acquisition.5. Elaboration.6. Memory encoding.7. Functional integration. The format of the book, is compatible to the brain's grasp and understanding, with "Key Topics" for each chapter, numerous key ideas on the margin and in the boxes, headings and bullets.People with background in NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming)and Ericksonian hypnosis can easily resonate with the stress on states, rapport and the use of language and find it thrilling to get the biological basis to the fundamental aspects of communication: first impressions, states, attention, persuasion, credibility...The brain's need to balance focused atttention with non-focused "down-time"reflection to process information for meaning-making, organization, and future recall given in Chapter 9 is just one example of so many interesting, enlightening and useful ideas that the book is full of.What is satisfying is not just the provision of techniques, but the underlying understanding of how we learn and communicate.Anyone, esp. teachers, parents can also benefit from reading this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting treatment
Interesting treatment on some of the age-old principles. Some chapters tend to over explain the concepts with too many examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will change your life
I am a CEO of a technology consulting company. I always considered myself a good communicator and have done very well in the business world, but this book took me to another level. This book has completely revolutionized my company and the way I communicate in business and in life. I have made it a mandatory read for all employees who deal with clients... and just anyone who actually opens they mouth to speak. The author uses the 10 secrets in writing the book itself, so it is very entertaining and easy to understand. He uses case studies of some of the most modern successful speakers in the business world, so all the information is relevant. I think this book MUST be read by every person on the planet. It doesn't just help communication in the business world, but in every part of life. I have noticed dramatic differences in the results I get; I speak clearer, in less time, and get more results. The most important lesson this book taught me is how to best communicate my company's complicated technology services to my clients. This has raised profits. I just hope my competitors don't start reading it. :-/

4-0 out of 5 stars Secrets - No: Good advice - Yes
There's nothing new in this book and NO, they are not secrets, BUT plenty of good material and anecdotes which may help the budding, and the experienced presenter become much, much better. Gallo has worked in communications for much of his life and brings a rich litany of anecdotes and personalities to illustrate his "secrets."

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
This is a handy, short, to-the-point guide about how to conduct meetings. Much of what author Barbara J. Streibel says is common sense, but any manager charged with running meetings knows how quickly common sense goes out the window in that setting. The author covers all of the bases and provides a series of useful checklists to help harried managers meet more effectively and efficiently. Streibel also provides many helpful references to other books that discuss specific techniques and practices. While little here is wildly original, we find that the author gives fresh, lucid and practical treatment to tried-and-true guidance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing results!
When was the last time you had a meeting that was so well organized and efficient that EVERYONE in the room complimented you?Since I started implementing the lessons in The Manager's Guide to Effective Meetings, participants thank me for making sure everyone is prepared (there are tricks to that!), for keeping the meeting moving, and especially for not EVER wasting their time. The use of easy-to-read formatting helps to make this book user friendly and, best of all, the shaded hint boxes with snippets of information make the suggestions, cautions, and concepts easy to remember when it counts most! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners in non-profit PR
I use this book to teach a beginning workshop in public relations for non-profit organizations as part of a continuing education program at a local community college. The book is an excellent resource for individuals who are not familar with public relations. It takes the reader through all of the things that he or she will need to do to effectively promote his or her organization.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite Useful for Students
The Jossey-Bass Guide to Strategic Communications for Nonprofits is a detailed examination of the relationship between nonprofits and the media. As the title says, it provides a step-by-step guide for nonprofits to establish effective relations with the media that result in publicity. My professor recommended this book to me, and I'm finding it quite useful. It has a similar approach to Guerrilla PR: Wired by Michael Levine; both are about maximizing your return on investment.Read more

This book really helps me communicate better. I've never read most of the ideas in this book, and I read a lot!5-0 out of 5 stars Persuasion Volume 2!
This book probably should have been titled, The Psychology of Persuasion Volume Two. It really is quite good. I bought it for the body language information and was not disappointed. 5-0 out of 5 stars Psychology of Persuasion: The Sequel

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad but there are better choices
Book is not bad but expensive. For a good general overview of what bankers and other people in an M&A deal do, take a look at my work, Deal Teams by Frankel.

4-0 out of 5 stars good guide, but also read Vault guide
This book is a good overview of the investment banking business, but it5-0 out of 5 stars I found this book the best of this kind
I am currently studying at the INSEAD MBA, France. Looking for information about the investment banking industry, I have been browsing dozens of books on the subject, but very few helped me to see both the big picture and thedetails of how the industry works. Fiction like Liers' Poker or Barbariansat the Gate missed the technical points and presented a very blurry pictureof what investment banking is about apart from psychological orphilosophical concerns. At the same time, technical books like The Industryof Investment Banking were too broad in technicalities, but narrow in thecultural issues. As I was reading "Doing Deals," I found the bestindustry guide of its kind, the book that provides very detailedinformation how the internal functions are structured, how the deals aredone, how bonuses are allocated, what management practices are in place, what cultural differences one should expect between firms and betweendifferent functions within companies, what is driving the people who workat investments banks, and what personal qualities and experiences areexpected from potential applicants. In addition, the book gives a lot ofdetail in its description of the principal industry players and thedifferences in their strategies. While the Vault.com guide is an absolutemust read for everyone, who considersinvestment banking for his futurecareer, "Doing Deals" is a much more fundamental book. True, itdoes not provide a list of short answers to finance interview questions, therefore adjust your expectations. What it does, however, is that it givesa very thorough and detailed description of how the industry functions anda very competent and knowledgeable analysis of strategic specifics withinbanking firms. While the Vault.com guide is for everyone, this book is moretargeted at a seriously-minded reader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview
Howard's book is an excellent overview of a number of service provider issues and technology. For myself, it helped me to wade through the morass of VPN technologies on the market when we were researching the replacement of our frame relay network. If you have an interest in the issues faced by service providers, or if you would like to learn more about wide area network technologies, then this book is a must-read. Howard's sense of humor and insightful anecdotes make this an especially easy read, despite the high technical content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too bad so many startups never read this book
Howard Berkowitz is known in the networking community for his writing which has helped many, many people earn advanced certifications. But Howard doesn't write to that goal; he writes, instead, to the goal of helping people understand what it takes to make a network actually perform and deliver the business function it was purchased for. This is another in that series of lucid and focused books.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
A book of tales must rise or fall on the quality of the stories it presents. And in that regard, this storybook earns a mixed report card. Most of the stories are clear and pithy, although some hint at change without being directly related to it. A case in point is "The Old Man and his Grandson," a brief moral tale about the need to demonstrate empathy and the fact that everyone grows older. Other stories, however, are perfectly apropos and even come with a hint of humor to prod listeners to accept change. Unnervingly, some of the less engaging stories come from author Margaret Parkin's personal experiences. On the other hand, her informative introduction makes a compelling case for the power of narrative in introducing and abetting transformation. She supplies excellent questions for further study after each story to keep the discussion on point. Overall, we recommend this book to those who would like to add a few new anecdotes to their quiver. If just one helps spur your organization be more flexible, that will be a success story worth telling. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good tips & great read
This book provides real gems for conducting one's self in a professional manner. It also manages to do it in a way that it is actually enjoyable to read.
1-0 out of 5 stars Nope
A receptionist told the authors that a woman was so engrossed in her Stephen King book that she didn't see two vice presidents walk up.And she was embarassed. Why? Because she really enjoyed the author she was reading. People get engrossed in a book--it happens. We're human. My boss wanted me to look over some books to see which ones I wanted to keep and I'm definitely telling her to return this one. I'm a HUGE novel reader and I feel telling someone to not read through a novel while they wait (who knows how long those v.p.s were taking?) is petty.I don't even like Stephen King, but I can already tell this book is going to be anal.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is helpful for documentation lifecycles
Another classic in need of updating, the 1994 book Managing Your Documentation Projects still provides good information about the basics of managing a technical writing project. It takes you from defining the project to completion, and on into the normally neglected phases of evaluation, and maintenance. This is a great tool for a writer who wants to formalize and add supporting structure to what he already does by instinct, for an experienced writer who is used to working alone and discovers he has no idea how to manage a team, or for anyone who wants to understand the mechanics of a well run team.

2-0 out of 5 stars This would have been an excellent 200-page book!
Joann T. Hackos's book offers some interesting concepts, such as information plan, project plan, and content specifications, to name a few. Her concepts are well hidden under mountains of text that the unfortunate reader has a difficult time finding or understanding her intentions. Her book is information technology-centered, and technical communication has so much to offer other industries, such as oil and gas, healthcare, and financial, regarding project and documentation management. This book is not a good choice for college-level courses.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the Gospel
Joanne Hackos is widely acknowledged as a leading authority on technical publications management, largely because (a) she has some good things to say and (b) her _Managing Your Documentation Projects_ is one of the few books on the topic. This book offers some valuable insights about basic project management, but tries to shoehorn publications project management into a particular software development methodology -- Carnegie-Mellon's Capabilities & Maturity Model. Hackos acknowledges her debt to CMM and warns that trying to implement the model described in this book is tough sledding if the development organization is not using CMM.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not With It
This book is more in tune with older thought on delivering presentations than it is with today.I also found the hand drawings of trying to make putting winning graphics together as child's play somewhat silly. There are many other better books out there, such as "Presentation Skills for Managers" that are more in tune with the times, and less like treating the reader as a child.I found Mr. Zelazny's other book "Say It With Charts" to be more useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Successful Presentations
This book is the best and gave me valuable tips to make effective presentation. Knowing how to communicate effectively, I can improve my teaching style. When I translate text pages into a brief presentation visual, my creativity enhance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reccomend highly
If you have to do presentations, chances are you don't have much time to wade through literature about how. Many books exist on the subject; this has got to be one of the best - covers basically all you need to know about How and Why rather than What.Zelazny helps the reader to find his/her own way, which is ultimately better than being spoon fed as in the disappointingly dry "McGraw-Hill One Day Workshop on Presentation Skills"Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Specialist Book Seller
I need a blog for the homebuilt aircraft community, particularly those working with composite (fiberglass) technology. I work alone and will require additional help with developing a good active blog. This book has helped me to ask the right questions of the professional IT type who must help me get the blog going.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great! (and not just for businesses)
As a longtime blogger and an entrepreneur I approached this title from New Riders with interest. I was happy to find out a wide range of information that I immediately put to good use in my own blogs. Interestingly enough, though the focus of the book is on blogging for businesses, the elements it presents are not limited to the business world. As a matter of fact, there at times throughout the book that you forget about the title of the book and get sunk into it due to the usefulness of the knowledge the authors share from their experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lame
I love comedy and I try to read anything I can about it. This book is extremely lame.It offers on real insight into generating humor, and finally tells you that there are other books that can help you do that better than this one.I have the books that the author recommends and they aren't that great.
4-0 out of 5 stars An ideal book for future stand-up comedians.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Both authors explain everything in simple English.Nothing boring here. The are many ideas in this book to help develop more material. The book holds your attention and the jokes throughout are enjoyable. This is a definite book that you should add to your collection if stand-up comedy is your goal.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide not only for aspiring comedians
Jay Arthur is a master practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Karyn Ruth White is a standup comedian and professional speaker. In Your Seventh Sense: How To Think Like A Comedian these two quite diverse experts work together to offer the reader an introduction of the essential skills required to "think like a comedian". Chapters address how to hone one's comedy radar, learning to refine one's act before taking it public, transforming random ideas into belly-laugh gold, and much more. Each two-page spread offers solid advice on one page, and a humorous or inspirational comedy-related quote on the other. An excellent guide not only for aspiring comedians, but also for those seeking to learn just enough of the art to liven up their speeches and presentations. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not as helpful as the title suggests
I bought this book hoping tolearn one new thing - I don't want 'tricks' or 'secrets' and I don't need to impress anyone - just facilitate seminars which are effective and enjoyable for the participants. I searched for an idea, process or new way of thinking that I could use, modify and apply in my own work. Sadly, it wasn't there for me.The style and content is not consistent with the title. The style is over-confident - the"know-it-all" style, characteristic of some American texts. The author presenting his opinions as fact. There's no doubt, no alternatives, just do it my way and it will be 'right'. Apart from this approach, some of the content is unhelpfulat best. For example his comments (opinions) on how to prepare and use visuals in presentations reiterates the worst habits - more bullet points! As the title suggests the author is writing for people who already know something about this well-worn subject, I would have appreciated buying something more original, less emphatic and better written. I regret buying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Way to Improve Quality & Productivity
I think this easy to read book is a must for all the industry sectors. It illustrates visual management (or visual communication; VC) as a very important issue to boosting the factorys' or companys' productivity through increasing the effectiveness of the employees' from head management to the shop floor workers by the effective sharing of information and by encouraging the workers to participate in developing these information. In addition; VC helps in building a sense of belonging to the factory or company within the workers themselves which will work in the factory (company) best interest. 5-0 out of 5 stars I own 33 copies and use it as a text for day-long workshops.
This is a very readable and credible work. Chapter six on visual process indicators is my favorite. It was an a-ha moment for me!! ... Read more
