4-0 out of 5 stars The Basics: Presented Well
Better know today as a conservative columnist for the Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan also has a very strong pedigree as a political speech-writer for George H. Bush and Ronald Reagan.
1-0 out of 5 stars Good Grief!
I love reading Peggy Noonan's WSJ column; so let's get that out of the way right now. Peggy generally writes in a stream-of-consciousness form that I like. It captures my attention from the first sentence and holds me to the end. But not this book. After a page or two I noticed I was skipping ahead, looking for the bait and the hook. It's not there. That's Writing 101. She knows that! What I suspect is this: Her publisher contracted with her for a give-back linked to something else, and she wasnt interested in the project. It shows!

5-0 out of 5 stars On Speaking Well by Peggy Noonan

5-0 out of 5 stars On Target
Bert Decker is on target with "You've got to be Believed..He helps us understand how our mind works and what works with the people we speak to. Its more than just saying the words. Mr. Decker gives the reader critical insight into the communication process. This is a must read for those who truly want to connect .The information learned is based on proven principles that are timeless.Effective communication is the lifeblood to effective living. This book nails it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive and a bore!
The main premise of this book is that you, as a speaker, must speak in such a manner that the listener will believe you on a subconscious level, that is, with their "first brain," the primitive brain consisting of the brain stem and limbic system and opposed to the "new brain," that advanced, intellectual, conscious part developed later in our evolution and known as the cerebral cortex. This is accomplished by speaking naturally, comfortably, and with animation, speaking the truth. Unfortunately, the author takes the first 70 pages to establish this premise, something that could easily have been done in 10 pages. He provides example after example of speakers who do and do not speak to the first brain. 5-0 out of 5 stars Bert Decker Knows How to Talk
This book provides the reader with a wonderful series of insights about how public speaking works. There are none of the old stereotypes -- and there is none of the usual advice (ie seeing the audience in theirunderwear). This is fresh information, delivered by a master. The kind ofbook that will make a difference in your life if public speaking isoccasionally important to you. ... Read more

This textbook is quite easy to read. From chapter to chapter it flows very easily.I hope this book sticks around in the college system text requirements for the next semester's students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty amusing and fun - for a college text book

4-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Talking to Anyone
The author provides savvy, helpful ideas on improving communication in all situations. Very good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I was hoping for
I put this audiobook in my Wish List several weeks before it came out. What I was hoping for was some good info on the psychology and execution of the lost art of conversation. What I got was an endless list of do's and do nots.I ONLY recommend this for EXTREME introverts. If you are looking to polish your social skills or socialize with anyone other than friends then keep looking.

2-0 out of 5 stars How to be a boring individual
The first 1 or 2 chapters of this book do indeed give you some good pointers on how to build rapport and to look for common threads, all very important parts of a conversation. However the latter chapters really get dull and tend to advice the reader to shy away from responding openly to real life situations such as when a friend approaches you with a problem, the author advices that you shy away from really putting yourself in their shoes and offering help, rather it gives you advice on how to decline offering help to someone in need.It also advices the reader not to tell jokes in any situation or to shy away from tellign detailed stories. Whilst for a social lepper this maybe sound advice most of us want to live in a world full of excitement and have conversations that are fullfilling for everyone, not just being a bore and trying to "fit in".Perhaps as an Brit this book is very American centric, but I'm sure even Americans are not even so boring! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Focused and heartfelt
So much in the NLP universe is dense or 'magical'. Here is a practical and usable book that anyone can understand, and that everyone can benefit from on one or more levels.Shelle has a heart and a brain, and to top it all off, she can write well.Whether you've been introduced to NLP through a seminar, Tony Robbins, The Game, or some other way, this book is a good addition to the library. But don't let it gather dust.Read it, learn it, live it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful step up from MBTI
This book is a classic: it bridges NLP and Myers Briggs in a clear way and is full of examples. I use part of it in my practice and would definitely recommend it as a sound primer on Meta-programmes.

5-0 out of 5 stars It hung together well for me-I've done a lot of homework on this
I've been doing a lot of in depth homework in this field over the past few months and this book is another one that is useful to understand. If you read it in isolation and not part of studying nlp or general influence and persuasion skills, then true you may find it difficult to work out how to apply it. Some folks look to books for complete magical formulas and 100% guaranteed results. Sorry folks, but humans don't work that way. The reality is that Shelle Charvet offers us her work as a series of highly useful generalisations, that can apply some of the time to enough people to be useful. They are context sensitive most of the time, and in her presentation of the profiles, she illustrates the extremes of each profile. This might give quite a pigeon holed view of each type of metaprogram if you look at folks, and analyse them in an either/or fashion. They are not meant to be used this way (the LAB profiles).

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful with problem-solving
Contrary to the other review, I find this book very helpful.I haven't gone yet to look at the reliability of the studies cited in the book, however there is a point to the "nude" chart on page 79.It is to point out that people respond consciously and unconsciously to differently to certain body types and whether people want to admit to it or not, it is true.I found the information they gave on how to problem-solve very helpful and ways in which to talk with others for effective group discussions or meetings.Although I am in the field of education, it is helpful for teachers in that we meet with parents, other educators, and other professionals all the time, making effective communication very important, especially with difficult parents.

1-0 out of 5 stars Communicating in Business and Professional Settings
This is a horrible book, and I encourage professors looking for serious organizational communication texts to look elsewhere. The book is dominated by unintentionally hilarious "studies", superfluousinstruction on how to be politically correct, redundant space-wastingcharts, and confusing self-contradiction.The authors, two Professors ofCommunications from the University of South Alabama, see fit to includesuch valuable learning tools as a drawing entitled, "several bodyshapes" (pg 79) which depicts 4 nude women from the back, each with adifferent degree of body fat, and Exhibit 4.7 (pg 86) which cites a"study" to show us that Native, Asian, African, and HispanicAmericans favor "Harmony with the nature and environment" whileWhites favor "Mastery over nature and the environment"Ignoringthe deep dubiousness of this point, I think that most of this book is awaste of time, unfit for any higher learning. In fact, I find this bookintellectually offensive. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Ok but...
It was alright for the course but it really should have been alot better. The book can be pretty condesending sometimes in the lessons and some of the names used in sentences are over used like Twileen, what a silly name indeed.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stand On Your Head
In a Monty Python parody of a children's TV show the host explains that, "To play a flute, you blow in one end and run your fingers down the side."In essence, that actually is exactly how to play the flute."Think On Your Feet" by Ken Wydro suffers a bit from this same tendency to oversimplify the complex and hope nobody notices.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!
Ken Wydro's "Think On Your Feet" will not only transform your speaking and conversation skills, but it will transform the way you think. Many public speaking help books will fill your mind with mechanical tips that everyone, I assume, should already be aware of...i.e., "put inflection into your voice to emphasize your point..." Duh!5-0 out of 5 stars A great find!
I first read this book years ago when I began speaking at a Toastmasters group. At first, it helped me with my impromptu speaking.Later, it helped me to begin making small improvements in my daily actions (the slight edge technique).I was very disappointed it was out of print at the time and I couldn't buy a copy for my own library.Recently, a fellow Toastmaster member found it...and bought a copy for me.I was so grateful -- this is a book to read again and again.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Drones beware
The first sentence of chapter 1 is probably my favorite quote from this book, and sums up the premise quite nicely:"Unless a businessperson gets cornered into speaking directly to live people - say, English teachers bearing assault rifles - we know what to expect: an indigestible main course of catchphrases and endless prose, with not a lot of substance for dessert."
2-0 out of 5 stars Boring, crude and just plain wrong
One of the least original thoughts I've heard in a long time is is that some business people writebadly. They state premises without the matching conclusions, they overuse jargon, they can be dull and they hide behind buzzwords. Big whoop.
2-0 out of 5 stars Tedious coverage of an important topic
Certainly a topic that needs to be addressed. It's a shame they didn't follow more of their own advice. In particular "keep it short."The content of this book would have made a good article, but there just wasn't a book's worth of material here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wordmaster: Improve Your Word Power (Your Coach in a Box)
This learning toolkit is absolutely fantastic.I played it in the car with my husband and we both learnt a lot in the 45 minute drive.I would recommend to get the most benefit that you sit down at a set time with the CD, pen and paper and get learning.Great facility.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hearing it is better than reading it....( in my case)
This vocabulary learning tool is much effective compared to reading it in a book. Proper pronunciation is also essential in delivering effectively a convincing thoughts to an individual. I have noticed the easiness of learning each certain word, enhanced my memory retention of it and its proper usage specially in making a successful persuasion. The expert created this learning tool has done it right in making an individual like me to enjoyMastering of Words.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical handbook about a crucial skil
The managers of most corporations and nonprofits do not understand or appreciate the process of writing proposals and grants, yet developing this skill can be the gateway to winning large contracts and substantial funding. In his practical handbook, author Tom Sant demystifies this important task, providing details about almost every aspect of the process, both pre- and post-award. He elaborates upon the materials you should include and lists mistakes to avoid. This book seems to have a good handle on increasing your success rate if you bid on contracts or apply for philanthropic funding. Therefore, we recommend it to public- or private-sector managers who respond to Requests for Proposals (RFPs), write bids for contracts or prepare grant proposals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond proposals: Successful business writing on a whole
I bought this book to help the small custom software firm that I work for improve the way we do business. I felt like we were losing way too many jobs and the more I thought about it, I felt our proposals may be the culprit. After reading this book, I realized that I was right. The great news is that this book is laid out very well and easy to apply immediately to the way you do business. I can't count the number of "a-ha" moments I had while reading this.

4-0 out of 5 stars OK but trendy and shallow
Good for a basic understanding and easy to read but tends to emphasize research and science less, and trendy, faddish aspecdts of group dynamics more. Still pretty well balanced overall though their choices in what to cover are sometimes odd, with important but not trendy issues dropped in favor of current fashion and popular jargon / instruments. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent For The Novice Special Event Manager
I was actually looking for a book about the organising of events with small groups of clients, up to 10 and at most 20 people. This was not what I was looking for....However it instilled a lot of new ideas in my crainium that I was able to carry over into my daily line of work when organising presentations to clients and events with clients.4-0 out of 5 stars Good Refrence
Contains short passages about each facet of event managment. Book is targeted at readers planning large-scale (50,000+ people) events, but much of it is applicable to all types of events. Not a great read, and definitely not the only book to own on event mgmt and marketing, but nontheless it serves as an excellent refrence for specific topics and questions, especially for beginners.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is a simple introductory text on event management.
This book is a simple introductory text on event management and will be of little use to those withany amount of experience in the field. At best, it will help the experienced manager refine their checklists.I expected much more from consultants of Ernst & Young. ... Read more
