5-0 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!
Elaine Sternberg has written an important, fascinating look at business ethics. Despite its academic presentation, it hooks you right away, and keeps you hooked. She is not fuzzy in her ethical analysis; there is no moral posturing to be found. This book is a practical decision-making guide for businesspeople. Sternberg builds an ethical framework that starts with the fundamental premise that the goal of business is to increase owner value. If an ethical issue relates to that goal, it's one you must address. If not, it's not your problem. Once you've identified an ethical dilemma that you must resolve, Sternberg guides you through a series of intellectual exercises that narrow your options, identify your constraints and ultimately help you arrive at the correct answer. We [...] recommend this book as a seminal introduction to ethical decision making for business men and women that should be read by all and referred to often.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've Got to Have A Sense of Humor About It . . .
This "chunky" book (with cardboard pages, like the kind you'll find any 3-year old chewing on), is fabulous. You've got to have a sense of humor though. It's the kind of thing you give as a parting gift to a crappy boss -- or as a half-joke gift to a recent college grad. The info in it IS actually good, but it isn't comprehensive. I don't think it's meant to be. I must say that several of my friends and I have had a good laugh over this book, and we've gotten a little good advice from it too -- a combination which makes it worth every penny to me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I expected
I purchased this book as a gift for my sister who is "making the transition from dorm room to board room" so to speak, so I thought this would be the perfect book for her. However, when it arrived in the mail I took a look at it and saw that it was not at all what I had envisioned. First of all, the book is a hardcover book with "hard" pages inside...or what they normally would call a "board book". It's a book I would normally think of purchasing for my two year old daughter. It's not a chapter book at all. It's very short- 23 pages to be exact! Since it was so close to Christmas time, I didn't know if I should go ahead and keep it and give it to my sister or return it to Amazon.com- so I decided to read it. (Believe me, it didn't take long.) Now I must admit, overall, the book has some really great advice about business etiquette. It's just, like I said, not what I expected. It's more of a book I would think to buy a 15-18 year old, not a 25 year old. If I had known this book had been so short and made of cardboard or whatever, I wouldn't have purchased it. However, after reading it I do admit that the advice is worthy. It's just a very short book for $9.95. Just wanted to warn everyone- be careful before you purchase this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Never offend!
Yes, yes, yes - I kept saying when I was reading this book. Seventy-five percent of the international students who had lived with me were Japanese. One of them sent me this book and I thank her forever for an extremely valuable gift. Until then I thought I knew about Japanese culture and habits, but this book was a true eye-opener. The examples were my students. The behaviors were those of my students. The attitudes were displayed by my students.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good survey of the Japanese sensibility
Popular media, stereotypes, etc. have made great strides in misinforming the West about Japan. Japan is much more complex than sushi, martial arts, and electronics; and the people are more realistic than kamikaze businessmen and geisha girls. The Japanese have a very highly evolved social structure, and anyone who is interested in dealing with or studying Japan should read books like this one. Dr. March explains the Japanese pysche in a way that Westerners can understand. He doesn't dramatize their thinking as a sort of sage wisdom, nor does he go out of his way to discredit the Japanese. 1-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful
I picked up this book in the library in order to understand the religions of my co-workers that way I could be more sensitive to their holidays, gift givings, etc.In reading in my own religion, I am a Latter-Day Saint, the information is not accurate. It states in this book that only the General Authorities are full-time paid church workers.No.The General Authorities are full-time church workers but they are not paid. So, now I wonder how many other "facts" are inaccurate in the religions I know nothing about.Bad author! She should have done her homework.Robbin Nelson

5-0 out of 5 stars Suggestion for future edition
I love this book and refer to it constantly.Everyone should own a copy to understand neighbors, friends, coworkers, the media, etc.It gives background information on many religions and religious customs in clear, easy-to-read language. My only suggestion is that the next edition should be more comprehensive, including Unitarian/Universalists (if it included U/U's, I would buy 50, since I am tired of explaining it to people and would give them as gifts).I would be happy to pay more for more information. Thanks for making the book available!

America's spiritual complexion is changing so quickly - thecombined result of immigration, intermarriage, transience and"seekers" choosing new faiths - that one often needs a religious score card to tell the players at home or at work.Gayle Colquitt White offers just such a score card in Believers and Beliefs :A Practical Guide to Religious Etiquette for Business and Social Occasions (Berkley, New York). 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best, with nice humour, and humanity
In my own meager experience in Asia countriesthree key things had dawned on me before I found Fred Schneiter's book. They were (1) It's their country and they make the rules, (2) What I saw on thesurface was never how it really worked, and (3) The more I learnt the lessI knew.Schneiter's book explained all these feelings for me, in a Chinesecontext, and vastly more. And all with a clever sense of humour, whichhelps the reader remember the anecdotes and the lessons. The chapters arealmost self-contained, and are easy to read, and the insights reveal awisdom about getting on in China that most of us will never attain.Ithink that anyone doing business in China would enjoy this book.Forneophytes, like me, you would be simply silly not to buy it.Having readand browsed many such books this is one of the best.I've enjoyedre-reading it many times over.

5-0 out of 5 stars An insightful and humorous look at China and the West
This book taught me a lot about how differently the Chinese view the world and how normal Western concepts do not apply to them. The black-and-white illustrations match the generally light-hearted and humorous tone of the book.Expecially useful for anyone planning a trip to China or planning to stay there ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book to point out importance of relationship in Japan
This book contains about 23 short stories about Americans and Japanese dealing with each other. However most of the stories deal with Americanstudents going to work in scientific labs in Japan. The author wasresponsible for sending interns from an American University to Japan so sheuses a lot of these experiences for her book. This limits the usefulnessof the book for other involvement. The author tries to tie the storiestogether with 4 stages of progress in the relationship but I found it hardto make the connection. The book is very readable.I finished it within24 hours of receiving it.The stories are each little dramas and I wascaptivated to find out how each person would do. In sum, a good starter butI think there is much more to the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lived it and learned it...
Gercik's book is full of interesting cases demonstrating the differences and difficulties most Americans face when confronting the Japanese. Whether personal or business, these two worlds are diametric - neither trulyunderstands the other. The analyses after each chapter provide insight fora successful Japanese-American relationship. Having myself been an internin Japan, I can safely say that her words of wisdom are worth reading. ... Read more
