4-0 out of 5 stars Cartoonish Exagerations, but the message is clear
I think the book is helpful to anyone having difficulty with any person (coworker, boss, subordinate) at work--but while reading you need to keep in mind these examples are extreme cases.5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Entertaining, and Practical
An absolutely wonderful book -- Wess Roberts has truly done it again! With a fresh synthesis of insight, humor, and practical advice, this book is a great read and a useful guide to solving one of the most perplexing challeges of everyday life: turning dysfunctional relationships into functional ones. I particularly enjoyed his analyses of "Imperious Jerks: Masters of the Universe," "Androids: The Blindly Obedient," "Gatekeepers: The Empowerment Police," and "Perpetual Victims: The Whiners and Bitchers." While reading the book I found myself contemplating the frequent nuggets of wisdom, laughing hysterically, taking notes, and thinking about ways to implement his insights. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
When I picked up this book I didn't know what I was getting myself into.I only knew about Attila the Hun and didn't expect Attila the "Get along with others."The book is terrific. It gave me some real insights about getting along with my employeer. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars BAD condition
If you are going to sell a book that has missing pages, a completely torn binding, and looks as if it has been tossed around like a football, then the condition should be listed as BAD.The book I bought from this seller was far from good, and completely unacceptable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for any international traveller!
Great advice for the international traveler. I especially enjoyed the brief histories given for each region. It truly helps to have some knowledge of the events and experiences that formed the culture, and how that might relate to some of the actions and motivations today. The examples given open your mind to consider that what actions that might be"natural" or "proper" or "taken for granted" here at home may be construed differently abroad. I also appreciate the list of references should I wish to do more in depth research.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good to know before you go
I have lived in Israel, Guatemala and Germany and think it would be useful for people who are going to travel or live in another place to read this book.Lanie points out so many small but extremely important cultural differences, such as conversational formalities and body language, and how being familiar with these nuances can make or break a business deal or greatly affect how one is treated in another country. This book will help the seasoned traveller and the novice to remember to think outside of his/her own world when embarking on an international trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read for World Travelers... And World Want-To-Be Travelers
Useful whether you travel the world, or navigate the world at home through the web, e-mail, and phone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of ideas and suggestions to improve customer service.
Telephone Courtesy & Customer Service is a classic example of how to manage the telephone. The author does and excellent job of intertwining telephone skills as they relate to customer service.Eighteen skills arepresented in a "how to" positive manner. The impact of thesetelephone skills on customer service is illustrated in an easy tounderstand format. The point made is, that every employee telephonestatement made to customers and other callers influences the customer'sperception of the organization and of the service provided.Employee'sdetermine the customer's perception by what they say and how they say it.Each statement can be delivered so that it leaves a positive impression onthe customer or caller.Customer needs are also discussed.A section onemployee attitude, as it pertains to customer service, is especiallyvaluable.Overall, the book is a primer on telephone skills and, in myestimation, one of the best ever written.I recommend it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Work of Truth
This book describes wonderfully how to apply the principles of Truth as illuminated in "A Course In Miracles", as well as other great works of Truth, to your career. 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for anyone spending more than 1 month here
When I found out I was hired as a teacher in Chile I decided to research the country a bit before I came. My friend recommended this series. It's a light read, I quickly read it cover to cover. Some of it seems a bit outlandish, until you come to Chile. Everything I read in the book (especially on the subject of the regalon...being a teacher and all) has been true. It is incredible. This book clarified and prevented many cultural mishaps. I highly recommend this book if you intend to work or travel extensively in Chile.

5-0 out of 5 stars That explains why..............
We lived with an Exchange Student from Chile this year.So many pages ofthis book had me thinking "So, that's why....."It answered manyquestions I didn't even know to ask.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for foreigners in Chile
As an anthropologist and long-time resident of Chile, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who plans to spend time here.In fact, I've made it required reading in a 'culture course' I teach for North Americanuniversity students here in Chile. This book is not another travel guide, but rather an insightful and very accessible look into the intracacies ofChilean culture.A quick look through the table of contents shows itsrange of topics, and the Cultural Quiz at the end is a must! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
Valerie's book ia a quick read with useful reminders of what we should all know.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Short and sweet" primer on business behavior for everyone.
Here's a handy and inspirational short book that touches so many of the problem areas pushed into the background in today's sink or swim office environment. If one takes a few minutes to read or reread this work periodically, then put it into practice, what a refreshing change might come about in many workplaces. While the book appears to be geared for the new entrant into the business world, many experienced executives would gain from a quick review. The format here would lend itself well to time managers who seek filler reading while between tasks. As the author writes: "Companies improve when people improve." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice primer for etiquette school
This is a good book even though I gave it 4 stars. It has some VERY interesting author stories and the tips are very well to listen to if you didn't grow up in a private school. They will help you to advance in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Schmoozing for Mature Adults
Thourlby delivers a masterful exposition of what can be called the Truth of Human Relationships, whereas other authors may treat the subject simply as schmoozing. What sets Thourlby apart is that his context is respect for the self and respect for others and that a Higher Power has placed you together for a reason. Studying and executing on his program for social success is then simply an acknowledgement of reality. Whereas the prose meanders at times, this book's message is of imperative importance...a must-read.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book.
My prof, probably A Reader from Rockford, assigned this book as our cross cultural text book.Definitely a good read.It completely changed my point of view on many aspects of international business, and made me more passionate about my major.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Alternative Textbook
I teach a college course on cross-cultural business, and I have used this book as one of my textbooks for the past 2 years. It is an engaging, practical, non-theoretical, hands-on description of the effect of culture on business practices, with plenty of stories from real-life people and pragmatic advice.I assign a chapter a week, and there is more than enough in 1 chapter to spend an entire week of class on, even though the chapters are not very long.My students love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Dense and Delightful
Dense and delightful are paradoxical words that come to mind on readingSheida Hodge's compendium of Global Smarts, a new book aimed at US Managersgoing abroad or working across cultures. Its 246 pages are a granola barpacked with nutritious examples that help the ethnocentric businessprofessional taste the reality and consequences of cultural difference. Thebreadth of the book is surprising, given its size. It touches on just abouteverything, and does so in a hands-on, practical way.Read more

This tiny little book provides an excellent short but surprisingly thorough overview of what one needs to know about business etiquette. Kennedy does a good job of bringing traditional etiquette into today'sworld without resorting to sarcasm and without losing the small nicetiesthat are the mark of good manners.
