5-0 out of 5 stars An American in Paris - old genre, great new treatment
Throw away Peter Mayle's "Year in Provence." Don't bother with Polly Platt's "French or Foe."Michael Johnson's "French Resistance" is the best book ever done in American-in-Paris genre. It is a wildly funny and engaging book that should appeal to francophiles and francophobes alike (as well as others who share some of both traits). It recounts Johnson's misadventures as the American managing editor of a French magazine staffed by French men and, more particularly, women, who don't want an American boss (or any boss at all). Apart from deftness of the writing, the book's humor and charm comes from the terrific perspective that Johnson has in telling his story. Not only is he perfectly fluent in speaking French, he has lived in Paris for many years as an American foreign correspondent, married to a French woman with two daughters, raised as French. For all that, when it comes to managing the French, Johnson discovers the true depths of French Resistance to all things American. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The provocative title is just the beginning. Wait till you see what's inside... Written by former advertising executive and self-confessed workaholic Karen Salmansohn, this is not your mother's advice book. Nope, no warm and maternal platitudes here. Salmansohn has written a devilishly funny and utterly bawdy book that also happens to be intelligent and insightful.Salmansohn takes gender roles, chews them up, spits them out and tells working women how to get out there in the world and get what they deserve. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Humor and Help
Interesting book -- contains both humor and help. What convinced me to buy and read it ?Why, the negative comments from Patriarchs !!Sexism is alive (sometimes seems to thrive) in the USA today. If some men are threatened by this book, maybe that it is a good sign. Salmansohn is a fun and interesting author, as seen again and again in her books. I also like her newest, 'How To Change Your Entire Life By Doing Absolutely Nothing' -- which is another good blend of humor and help.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another worthless book
Yet another worthless book from Karen. This author loves to take any opportunity to attack anything thats symbolically male, including in this case, the world of business which was created by men.Men should not feel guilty or apologize for that fact either, nor should they be sympathetic of the "female struggle" in business or any other domain of men.Its important to note also that men created the free-enterprise system and all business schools,as well as higher-education in general.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny and Mostly True
This was the first book I've read of Karen Salmansohn's, and I enjoyed it. Karen comments on the business world and gives advice, and then always gives the flipside to that advice. It's mostly just humor, but there are some truths contained therein. Though the author is evidently a very successful businesswoman, I would buy this more for its humor than as direction for women in the workplace due to some of the questionable advice she gives (such as women might do well to dress sexy and use their sexuality at work...I'm not sure I concur that that is a way for women to climb the ladder nor that it helps women to be respected in the workplace). An enjoyable read that will elicit lots of chuckles. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This book was okay but...
This book had some helpful information in it. However, if you really want a great book on bad bosses buy The bully at Work by Gary and Ruth Namie.

4-0 out of 5 stars You can teach an old dog new tricks
The whole idea of taking back control of your professional life isexplored in this short (149 pages) book. It has anecdotal feel to it and alist of types of abusive personalities as well as a questionnaire. Readsfast. Check out the extensive Bibliography. Can see how this type of bookcould be helpful to some of our clients in trying to identify their senseof betrayal after a poor match in their careers. I do not like the"victim" approach to anything, so I found it a little bit hard toaccept that I could be in a position where I am not responsible for some ofthe results/outcome. I loved The Eight Daily Sins I could actually relateto them in a True Colours way i.e.: The green boss, out of esteem, in"Deification: Implying a master-servant status....they feel themselvesto be superior people". I would use some of the type of bossesdescriptions (i.e.: Conquerors, Performers, Manipulators, etc.) in aone-on-one situation to get clarification on how my client got the feelingof oppression or to help give name to a toxic situation. I also liked theSix Survival Skills particularly No.1 "Do not accept The Eight DailySins as natural ingredients of relationships at the workplace". Inother words respect yourself.... So be it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, gives a name to subtle abusive techniques
This book is very good at identifying and describing subtle abusive techniques used by some people in the workplace today. We have all worked with them, and sometimes don't realize what type of people we are dealingwith until it's too late!Unfortunately, it seems that hard work andintegrity don't always help you get ahead. However, I think realizing whatwe are up against is the first step to making a difference. This bookchallenges the reader to evaluate his/her own behavior at work, and toidentify abusive behaviors of bosses (and coworkers). If you have anysuspicions that someone is bullying you, backstabbing you, or manipulatingyou at work, I would recommend reading this book.I'd like to see thisbook updated for 1999. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS!
It is an absolute waste of money... the only thing I learned was not to buy anything from this company ever! The book is about 10 pages of text, that could easily be made into to 2 by taking out the spacing. The information is common sense, and you can find more by spending 3 minutes on any website. Do yourself a favor, and spend your money elsewhere!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
This little booklet of advice is really not worth the [money] it costs. It has very few pages, all in large type, providing very little valuable information. My advice, try a different book for learning this stuff.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incorrect translations, Over simplistic explanations.
This book was flimsy, 9 pages for 9.95, and four pages can be read online, so when you get the book, you feel that it was a complete waste of money. If you are experienced at all with China, don't get this.If you are going on a short business trip, and you don't know anything at all, go for it.But, BEWARE, the Chinese language translations were NOT correct. The most simple greetings "hi" and "how are you" were incorrect.Try to find a thicker more complete volume. The Lonely Planet guides are great. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
Self-help books tend to be either insightful or dumb. Author Ann Marie Sabath manages to accomplish both results in the same book. At times, the book provides useful examples on topics that are truly unclear, but other times it tells you to wear your goulashes in the snow. If you are willing to shift through some incredible obviousness, then you will find enough pearls. The lists of common mistakes that start each chapter are particularly helpful. If you do nothing else, read these lists and find out if you are committing a dressing gaff. If you can honestly say that you have not or never will commit any of the mistakes on the lists then you are ready to navigate the business casual workplace confidently.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent overview
This book is certainly easy to read and presents some very solid advice. It covers a wide variety of topics from heel heights to skirt lengths, fromthe rules about wearing cologne to protocol for wearing nose rings atwork(don't!).However, I was disappointed that it contained not a singleillustration, as I would think that a book purporting to help people learnhow to dress for work might include a few sketches or photos...a picturebeing worth a thousand words, you know. In addition, several topics (theskirt length issue, for example) were repeated numerous times, which wasannoying to say the least. Finally, I found the pagination system to bedeceptive at best. The text STARTS on page 15 and the last few pages of thebook are devoted to things like "about the author" and an index. By my count, you really only get 185 pages of text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for today's professional
Sabath has done an excellent job of condensing a potentially huge body ofadvice into a readable book that's not at all pretentious or sermon-like. She covers the gamut of issues from how NOT to dress in a business casualenvironment to how TO dress in an environment that's not business casual. She also spends some useful time on what to wear on casual Friday's in anotherwise professionally-dressed work environment.I highly recommend thisbook to both corporate and government professionals, and definitely toanyone preparing for interviews in either environment. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This book can change your outlook on life!
I bought this book a few years ago, and find myself going back to freshen up with it every few months.Power Schmoozing is still an interesting read.Terri Mandell's book provides excellent insight into the art ofsocializing amongst people, including social etiquette rules for "thegame" of everyday life.It has changed how I perceive and interactwith others, at least somewhat.Applying some of the techniques canrecover what would otherwise be an akward moment of personal disaster intoa memorable and often endearing episode.I had once thought that I was theonly person that felt like a bit of an outsider around new people, until Idiscovered that everybody else has the same problem with 'breaking-the-ice'too!I have in the past recommended this book to others. If you aresomewhat withdrawn, a social pessimist, or a bit low on confidence, thisbook could change your life!5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK COULD CHANGE YOUR SOCIAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE
The techniques are brash and a bit scary. But you know what? I tried it, and it really works! I was mortified at first about being so bold until I just bit the bullet and used some of Mandell's ideas. Suddenly I'm thecenter of attention. My instinct was to panic and say, "Yeah, NEGATIVEattention..." But when I realized my social calendar was filling upand my morning call lists were getting shorter (because people wereactually calling me instead), I knew I was onto something. And it getseasier with time. I think my personality has really opened up in theprocess, I feel much more confident, and socially at ease wherever I go. Incontrol of a room rather than the room being in control of me. Bottomline... no guts, no glory. You've gotta really want it to make it work. Myguess is the majority of people are probably too timid to even give thesetechniques a try. I've heard Mandell does great seminars on "PowerSchmoozing" as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thanks, but no thanks.
I read parts of her book. One of the things she recommends is that if you can't afford to pay for a social event, to sneak in!?!?!? Thanks, but NO THANKS!!!!! Perhaps I'm too honest, but I got a problem with thattechnique. The consequences of getting caught and the damage to yourreputation would far outweigh any benefit. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Charles Mitchell's book offers an excellent introduction to the differences in attitudes, values, protocol, rituals, traditions, communication styles and other characteristics that commonly separate cultures. He distinguishes people's basic cultural traits from different national groups, while noting regional and individual variations, too. Mitchell cites examples from many major nations, including the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Nigeria, Israel, Australia, China, Japan, Russia, Vietnam and India, and from Hispanic and Arabic cultures. The book is clearly written and well organized, with tips on giving gifts, negotiating, handling verbal and non-verbal communications, holding meetings and conducting business in general. We [...] say tuck this into your carry-on bag - the farther you're going, the more you'll need it.
