4-0 out of 5 stars Avoiding the cultural faux pas...
Today's business world is such that you are very likely to have working relationships with global business partners. And you *should* know that "when in Rome, do as the Romans do".But what exactly is that?Terry Morrison and Wayne A Conaway bridge some of that information gap with the book Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands. This is one of those books that could help you close a big deal (or avoid killing one).
4-0 out of 5 stars A resource for me
Written for the international business traveler, this book was a great resource for me as characters in the Marketplace novels came from around the world. For my fans who keep asking me for "the protocol:" hey, start here and you tell me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing!
60 countries, and the only country in the entire continent of Africa the authors wrote about was Egypt? C'mon. While the authors do, in a similar compilation published after this one, include South Africa (the only other country in Africa included) and a few other countries, it is still a disgrace that books and compilations such as this one ignore the importance of proper business ettiqute in countries such as Kenya, Senegal, Ghana, and Tanzinia and do nothing more than perpetuate falsehoods, myths and fears about doing business in the aforementioned African countries and many others. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Alright
Being an avid reader of Event Planning literature, I must say that this book is alright.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge!
Details, details, details. That's really what successful event planning is all about, and that's the key to this very successful event-planning manual. Author Judy Allen notes, lists, copes with and gives an example of virtually every detail in planning anything from a sedate corporate event in a major city to a huge celebration on a remote island. She provides examples galore plus tips, questions and answers, sample cost sheets and schedules. How much floor space does a person need to be comfortable in a tent? Answer: 20 square feet. How many bathrooms should be available for a party? Answer: One per 75 guests. And don't forget to ask about the stemware, adequate parking and even the photographer's back-up camera battery. This author seems to have thought every contingency, as the book's ambitious title promises. Her one glaring omission is that she does not include the party planner's fee - our guess is that she'd be worth it. We highly recommend this well-organized, very practical book to all event planners. Don't send out press releases for your party without consulting Judy Allen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book everyone should read
This is wonderful book explaining what etiquette is really about. One will learn everything -- from how to dress, table manners, office setup, how to print business cards to how to prepare resume.I would recommend to everyone to read it regardless if they are working or not. While I do not agree with some of the rules regarding "who pays for lunch" - I would say that this is a book everyone should read and understand because it will improve their interactions with others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong Tips Here
Axtell vividly shows how common sense is NOT enough to get you through all social or business situations around the world. Travelers ignore Axtell at their own peril.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This book is good to read in general terms as it attempted to explain the gestures from all around the world.Sometimes, it's amusing to read & at times, I would be loss for words as what I thought was the right things to do in certain countries is actually considered as rude or obscene.Perhaps, it's the kind of book that you can read in the plane or just as a matter of interest. The presentation is rather text book-ish with bullet points, occasional pictures to ease readers' boredom, something like a PowerPoint presentation.I guess that denotes the writer's background being a prominent guest speaker.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, interesting and funny

5-0 out of 5 stars The best "how-to" book I've read on achievement
This is a really great book on the building blocks and requirements for attaining fulfillingachievement.I think one of the best parts of this book for me was the author's classification of achievement as an art. This softened the definition of achievement for me and liberated the concept from my perception as a cold,money-producing necessity to something beautiful, fulfilling, exciting and worthy of creation.Everyone is different, of course, and how we do things is always different from how others do things, even when we seemingly are doing the same thing. We all put our personalities into everything we do.That combined with our ability to choose how we use our unique, God-given abilities to create achievement art that will help both ourselves and others, makes fulfilling achievement very worth creating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ways to Profit from the Seeming Contradictions in Chinese Society
Confucius, Daoism, Communism, Industrialization, Urbanization, One-Child Families, Great Leap Forward, Education and Profit Is Good:What do these themes mean for those who wish to sell in China? They are all important influences which you need to understand. Each Chinese consumer is uniquely influenced by the combination. The result includes some pretty interesting apparent contradictions such as prudishness about sex in advertising in a country where sexual trade is wide open at the street level.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hire this guy for your ad campaign!
Love this book.Focus group, quantitative analysis, qualitative research, or any else you learned in the Marketing Research course at the MBA curriculum, may not work in China. WIth 1.3 billion customers, this is the dream market for any multinational corporations: Unilever, Ford, Nokia, Motorola, Sony, Samsung, Protor Gamble, DeBeers(DTC), VW, Shell, Pepsi, Coke, Nestle, Avon, Nike, Siemens, IBM, Dell.... While they are compeitng, the locals are copying quickly: Haier, TCL, Konda, China Mobile, China Unicom, Lenovo, CNOOC, Yili Diary, Sedrin beer, 999 Pharmaceutical..... hundreds of them doing shampoo, shoes, ....every thing under the sun.How can you win? That is the beauty of this book. It got many strategies laid out in the step-by-step fashion. It is a must read for any one who is doing business in China. The book will be better if more comparison can made on the effectiveness of the ad such as Motoroal vs a Chinese brand.

5-0 out of 5 stars For companies who would enter the Chinese market
BILLIONS: SELLING TO THE NEW CHINESE CONSUMER comes from a CEO with direct experience selling into the Chinese market, and discusses the code of marketing as it relates to modern China. Many companies come to China with ideas on how to apply Western thinking to their very different marketplace: thus BILLIONS' tips are a necessary set of instructions for any who would break into the Chinese marketplace. From cultural influences in buying patterns to investment challenges and multinational lessons on winning and losing in China, BILLIONS is a recommended pick for any company who would consider entering this new, large market.

It is precisely what it claims to be. If you're going to come over here, you should read it. So much information, all in one place. My life would've been much easier if I'd read this five years ago, but perhaps Who Moved My Rice? wouldn't be quite so much fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New
I didn't find this book terribly useful. Most of the concepts presented in the book were common sense and did not specifically apply to business. The book centered around typical social etiquette (which certainly appliesin the business world), but did not provide much business-specificguidance.I found that most of the concepts were covered in generaletiquette publications.I was also disappointed to find that the book didnot provide specific solutions for breaches in business etiquette.I guessI was looking for some nice catch-phrases and replies for the businessuser.I do think the book was simple to read, and might be a good book fornewcomers to American business etiquette.

5-0 out of 5 stars An OD book with a solid combo of theory and practice
Finally, an OD book with a solid combination of theory and practice. The theory in this book is the most comprehensive model for OD I've ever seen.Simons' model incorporates all functional areas of business. He does an excellent job of looking at the whole organizational picture. This is where many authors have fallen short with theories that only cover one or two functional areas of business leaving you to guess at how to incorporate the rest. This cross-functional approach to OD is not just refreshing; it's quite necessary in today's business environment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Drones beware
The first sentence of chapter 1 is probably my favorite quote from this book, and sums up the premise quite nicely:"Unless a businessperson gets cornered into speaking directly to live people - say, English teachers bearing assault rifles - we know what to expect: an indigestible main course of catchphrases and endless prose, with not a lot of substance for dessert."
2-0 out of 5 stars Boring, crude and just plain wrong
One of the least original thoughts I've heard in a long time is is that some business people writebadly. They state premises without the matching conclusions, they overuse jargon, they can be dull and they hide behind buzzwords. Big whoop.
2-0 out of 5 stars Tedious coverage of an important topic
Certainly a topic that needs to be addressed. It's a shame they didn't follow more of their own advice. In particular "keep it short."The content of this book would have made a good article, but there just wasn't a book's worth of material here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
I am writing this review as a person who suffered dearly from people at work and life who were and some still are just plain nasty.I ended up with severe depression and anxiety and I am doing much better now that I have this tool to fall back on.It is not a book that tells you to suck it up or drastically change yourself but, rather to confront these nasty people in a positive way that gets your point across without the "abuser" getting defensive and makes them aware of their own behavior so it ends up being a win-win solution.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good constructive advice, without being too touch-feely and abstract
I like the tone of the book. Its not about self esteem etc. It provides valuable concrete techniques for dealing with conflict effectively and constructively.

3-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps three chapter's worth of usable content
It's only natural for a popular self-help speaker with a truly great message to want to put it into book form. The Power of Positive Confrontation teaches a truly great technique for confronting others that will help everyone who has trouble standing up for him or herself. Too bad there's only about three chapter's worth of actual content in its sixteen chapters. Instead the author gets into telling us how to dress for success, how to convey the information that a friend or loved one is in the hospital, do's and don'ts of International Travel along with several chapters of warm-up before finally getting to her actual WAC technique.Don't get me wrong, I still recommend this book highly but an abridged cassette version would be a lot less painful. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good buy
If you're fresh out of college and are looking for a guide to how to dress in the workplace, this book is pretty useful. If you've been in the workforce a while then it can be used to enhance your wardrobe. The tips are abundant, the language clear with lots of illustrations. It's a good gift for any college graduate and the male version is good too. Of course job culture is always evolving and sometimes the book can appear dated. In conclusion, this book is a good place to start a professional looking wardrobe but common sense is also needed to fit the adivce to the specific character of your workplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped get me out of my shell.
This is a good book for someone who can act on things. I was shy most of my life and worked hard to earn a degree from a good school only to fear talking to people so
2-0 out of 5 stars would make a good magazine article, but not a very good book.
There are many pages that are just completely wasted.

2-0 out of 5 stars People who love people
Who would want to "work a room"?Someone trying to sell something, maybe? If you're not selling anything overtly, this book will not be of interest.I say overtly because, as someone once pointed out, we're all selling something, but we need not do so overtly or manifestly. But by our behavior.Actions and words and all. This book, and others like it, all have us looking outward for gratification, basically from other people, people "in the room.""In the room" can be a metaphor for the "in crowd."Do you want in with the in crowd?Maybe you'll learn some tools from this book. Then again, you might do better looking inward at yourself.Listen to one of the great modern inward-seekers, Vernon Howard (excuse the gender specificity, it's an old book): "A man owes nothing to any other human being on earth except to be himself, but since few see this, most men stagger under the burdensome debt of artificial behavior. It is a tragic illusion that we can do anything for others before we have done something for ourselves."The writer of "How to work a room" is essentially focusing on how to improve your artificial behavior.Diximus. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars weLEAD Book Review from the Editor of leadingtoday.org
This book is co-authored by David L. Steward and he is a true success story! He has risen from humble beginnings, and confronted many personal setbacks to become founder and CEO of the largest African-American owned company in the United States. Doing Business by the Good Book is his personal story of the faith and perseverance that he credits for his success. Steward shares 52 principles from the Bible that he believes were intended to be implemented in business strategy and conduct. This is not simply a book that blandly presents 52 Biblical principles. It is David Steward's own story of how these 52 principles impacted his personal and family life to eventually build World Wide Technology, Inc., a privately held billion-dollar company. Doing Business by the Good Book is almost like reading a private diary. Steward discusses his own vivid experiences to teach about business management, ethics, strategy and personal leadership. At the heart of his value system are the Biblical scriptures frequently mentioned throughout the book. A central theme is his belief that giving and serving others is an essential ingredient to becoming highly successful. If an organization honestly serves its employees and customers, their response of loyalty will help achieve an impressive bottom line.
