2-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but very academic
This book is well concieved, but obviously written by someone who has an academic background. The author cites lots of facts and examples, but never really takes the "how to" steps I'd expect from someone who has actually done what he's writing about.2-0 out of 5 stars Long on Promise
Another good volume in the never-ending monday morning quarterback look at other companies' crises. This book, however, does not deliver on its promise of helping business manangers anticipate or prevent crisis...there are only a few hundred words of abstract advice on this topic. Most of the book is a rehash of publicly-known crises that the author then explains to us after the fact. There is little information to help managers actually find internal or external trouble spots and respond preemptively, other than vignettes about actions a company might have done differently...the old monday morning crisis prevention.

2-0 out of 5 stars Managing Crises:Short on Substance
Managing Crises has helpful checklists of things to consider and the author's Rules for dealing with crises but it is short on convincing analysis. For example, one Rule is that all crises "send out a repeated trail of early warning signals."This is probably true in many, if not most cases, but the author fails to provide a convincing analysis that it is true for all or almost all cases. The Tylenol crisis is the books primary example, but the book fails to analyze what the early warning signals were for the Tylenol crises that the manufacturer failed to detect and act on. The book is higher on salesmanship (promoting the author's business?) than on substance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great story
I really enjoyed this story. Having grown up in the same time I could relate with the description of reality as the writer describes. He is clearly not a writer by profession, which makes the book seem even more genuine and accurate. This book is a keeper!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book!
I just finished reading this book and I just wanted to say that I think this story is very fascinating. It was akin to reading a private diary. ( I wish I could write like that too.) To be so young and hit it big is the sort of thing that people dream of, myself included. I am 30 years old and so I can relate to some of the things he went through. As was pointed out, on the one hand, Steph and Todd had to conduct themselves as mature businessmen running a company. And on the other hand, he wanted to act the way other 23-year olds act, fun-loving and party-going, with boundless energy. 4-0 out of 5 stars Internet mania
I am 29 years old and was looking for a book to read by an author of my generation. And I stumbled across this one by Stephan Paternot. His true story almost reads like a novel because it sounds so exciting and adventurous. Being about the same age as the author and having been swept through Internet mania and lost my share of money, I found his story very engaging. I saw the review in salon.com after reading the book and was rather disappointed that the reviewer did not share my enthusiasm. Apparently, the book did not meet the reviewer's high intellectual standards, when in fact, Paternot's writing style was (I felt) a major strength in the book. It's as if the negative reviews (from other websites) I have seenare not so much about his book as they are begrudging of Paternot who possesses youth, movie-star looks, worldly upbringing, entrepreneurial family heritage, and Ivy League schooling. So his company failed. But other than maybe Michael Dell or Bill Gates when they were starting out, how many under-30 CEOs do you know have the poise and savvy to lead a highly publicized and publicly-traded company? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK!!!
This is one of the best books to come along in a long time - maybe only second to "Somebodies and Nobodies: Overcoming the Abuse of Rank."

5-0 out of 5 stars All Rise for a Better Society
If Robert W. Fuller's hopes for the human race were to come true, the world would be a better place.A dignitarian society where everyone is valued would transform our interactions at the personal, local, national, and international levels.Fuller doesn't argue that everyone has equal skills, abilities, or position power but suggests arbitrary delineations of "rank" are used to give people cover to treat others disrespectfully or abusively.
5-0 out of 5 stars My 12 year old gets it, why is it so difficult for me?
My 12 year old transferred schools mid semester. He was the 'mayor' of his old school...very popular. Now he says, "I was a somebody, and now at the new school I am a nobody." The new school is better but he wants out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Horrifying
This book clearly shows man's ability to use science for evil knows no bounds. What I truly don't understand is why none of the "testing" people are in prison.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Shocking Expose Relevant in Today's World
And you thought that horrible "medical" experiments on humans only took place in Germany and Japan during World War II?This exhaustively researched and documented book about using prisoners in Pennsylvania as guinea pigs to test the safety and efficacy of various types of medical, pharmacutical, cosmetic, and military products during the post-war years was an enormous surprise to this reader.
2-0 out of 5 stars Fluff
My god man. How much fluff can you put into one book. Mr. Hornblum, I have so much information to attain and so many books waiting on a list to be read that anything with useless time wasting fluff, aka long drawn out paragraphs, automatically goes on my "how not to write a book" list. I am sorry but your book made me more frustrated than enlightened, with all of your redundant repeats of what people said, told in eight differing ways, I am not sure if you thought the audience needed this much repeating or if you just needed to add a couple 20 pages to the final draft for appearances. But nonetheless I cannot sit and waste my precious time reading words of nothingness when there is an eternity of usefull information sitting out there waiting for me. *No arrogance intended, "I" as in us, humans.* I just don't see any excuse for this. Out of the 100% of book I would say there is about 25-35% of usefull concise information in it. Au Revoir` ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad defense of free-market
I'm writing this review to balance the far-too-positive ones above. I was forced to read this book for a college course. The book is simply not well-written nor is it a convincing defence of the free-market system.
4-0 out of 5 stars Student of Life
The view going in is very different than the view coming out. Novak's idealism helped to encourage me in my own. I read this book as an undergraduate business student struggling to find the balance that I saw in between greed and good. I so enjoyed his language, examples, and message that I recommended it to my Business Ethics professor. Last I heard, he was planning on using it as one of the textbooks. I gave it a 4 star rating because although it was a good read, it could always be better. Let's leave some room for improvement.

3-0 out of 5 stars stimulating book yet many issues to be discussed further
After finishing this book, i got the impression that the author has touched something about the philosophical grounding on capitalism, however, the book is not deep enough in analysing these grounds. 1 the moral baswwhich the author inspected is of the christian ( or rather ) catholicculture, the reasons of the christian culture is the most suitable one tosuit with the capitalism are not yet fully explained 2 its hiddenpresumption on pratising ideal capitalism is having a good government, goodsmaall societies to support the neighbours or citizens, good law systemetc, but if i live in a place full of corruption, business law system notwell developed, what should i do? he does not suggest any means 3 the modelwhich he inspected is the usa, he also studied catholic, i would rathersay, it is like, when someone got a hammer, all things can be solved byusing it 4 i cannot agree more than that, doing business must have moraland courage if you have interest in discussing with me in this book orothers, pls email me ... Editorial Review

Nussbaum and Sunstein have collected a comprehensive set of essays on the implications of cloning, which has not been attempted with humans as of this writing, but almost surely will be within a few years. The editors include Ian Wilmut's original research paper reporting the existence of Dolly, the cloned sheep, as well as ethical analysis papers by popular science writers such as Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Dawkins. Four fiction pieces round out the collection. Opinion pieces on topics ranging from the soul of a clone to clones raised for body parts are the most interesting essays in the bunch. In the horror-scenario category, Andrea Dworkin takes the position that in a world where cloning is possible, men will clone only compliant women, at last gaining the control over reproduction they've always wanted. (Dworkin ignores the fact that no gene for compliance has yet been isolated.) Questions of nature versus nurture will presumably be answered in the brave new world of cloning, and many of the writers in Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Start in the Field
This is a terrific basic explanation of the science, ethics, politics and sociology of human cloning. It is a collection of essays, most of which have been published elsewhere, but pulled together in a coherent and thorough form.3-0 out of 5 stars A multifaceted look at human cloning
I'm interested in the life issues currently being debated and examined in our modern world; abortion, euthanasia, and human cloning. The question of human identity and personhood is crucial to all these issues; the answers ultimately come from one's worldview (The overall perspective from which one sees and interprets the world. A collection of beliefs about life and the universe held by an individual or a group.)4-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I'm not a clone
This book is a must for all those who want to inform themselves about this problem, which will mark the history of our near future. It is not highly scientific because at the moment we can only speculate what kind of impactcloning of humans may have on us - once it is allowed. If it is notallowed, it will be done - because what someone thinks will be carried out.It has been like that throughout our scientific history. (Otto Hahn droppedthe idea of the atomic bomb - and someone else built it.)We will have toface human clones in the very near future. And we want to know how we willface this new situation. And this is what this book is about. It gives youa variety of impulses and, of course, it has to be highly speculative. Wesimply cannot analyze a situation that we do not have in reality. Thestories at the end of the book are not very good, but they are a good tryto interest readers that have difficulties with facts only. Science fictionliterature would have provided far better stories. I am glad this book waswritten, and I'm glad I'm not a clone. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Take critical thinking one step further...
...and use the techniques in this book on the book itself.Sadly, a book with so much promise falls victim to its own PR machine all too often.Face it, if you're going to use critical thinking, use it consistently. If you use it against what you don't like, but cast a blind eye on things you are passionate about, how critical is that, really?

5-0 out of 5 stars Beware of "Experts" -- Follow the Money!
John Stauber tells it like it is, and I wish this book were a bestseller. Readers who can accept these truths may also want to read a highly detailed yet fascinating expose of a huge and profitable industry that has been manipulating science and gambling with your health -- "The Whole Soy Story:The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food" by Kaayla Daniel, The fact that you are probably thinking, "No, we all know that soy is healthy for us" is proof of how thoroughly you've been conned. I was too, but no longer. "Fluoride Deception" by Christopher Bryson is another good one. Thanks to John Stauber, I'm wary of experts and now know enough to follow the money.

3-0 out of 5 stars The good and the not-so-good
Stauber and Rampton have written an expose of the PR arm of corporate America that on the whole is valuable. After reading this book, you will never look at an "expert" defending a product in quite the same way again. The best service this book provides is to enlighten the reader to techniques used by the PR industry to sway public opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really interesting little-ish book
This book was on the prescribed text list for the masters I am doing (Master of Informaiton Technology) and I must say I was pleasantly surprised to read it. Being a technical (engineer) person, it's a generalized opinion that this group (enclave?) we like mathematics, science and engineering books, but not so called 'arty farty' stuff like philosophy. Speaking for me personally, isn't far from the truth...So I thought...groan, not another one of these idealistic, pointless, ultimately altruistic and futile failures to read. Indeed not! I actually enjoyed reading it! (shock-horror). Tavani uses the ploy of relating hisideas to real-life situations (stalking, cracking, etc). This lends the book a serious air of legitimacy. The ivory tower is nowehere in sight. He doesn't lecture at you like you're a poor, misguided computer geek who could never possibly understand human morals and ethics in a digital world (the point is to help you do that...which Tavani does).

5-0 out of 5 stars To those giving negative commments about the Kiyosaki's Book..
I've read some of the negative comments coming from those who purchased the Rich Dad books or audio cd's.I think many of them come from no real basis at all.To the one person who commented that it is hard to find a bank that will give you 95% LTV; many if not most banks are in fact doing that. I Got one from GMAC for a property I purchased last year.In fact I purchased several with 100% financing in the last couple years; so they are out there my friend if you look for them. For starters get into a good R.E investment club, and if they are worth they're weight they will point you in the right direction. They aren't expensive, at about 250 to 500/yr average (Don't fall for the scams that will take you for thousands of dollars..), and they generally do a good job of getting you real information you need to take the next step.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book offers great lessons!
I've heard about a bunch of RICH DAD books by Robert T. Kiyosaki, but to date, had never read any of them . . . so when I saw the cassette version of RICH DAD'S SUCCESS
5-0 out of 5 stars He's just trying to help...
In spite of the negative comments, I would say this book is better
