2-0 out of 5 stars Do The Right Thing Because It Is The Right Thing: Long-winded, Short on Substance
"Moral Intelligence: Enhancing Business Performance and Leadership Success" by Doug Lennick has a simple premise. Once you get that premise, the rest is about internalizing it, and living it out when the moral challenge presents itself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
In business or financial circles, morality and ethics has frequently been thought of as weakness, as something that while noble will not assist in the generation of profits. Further, those who practice it can easily be taken advantage of by competitors. A business run by moral agents will not be able to survive the vicissitudes of the marketplace. It takes cunning and an instinct for the jugular, so the argument goes, to create and maintain a successful business.Another view is that a businessperson who claims to be moral or ethical is either posing as such in order to take advantage of someone or some situation. In this view, morality and ethics are then tools of manipulation and power, a view that is, ironically, not far from that of those political philosophers, such as Karl Marx, who criticize capitalism vociferously.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Concept, Treatment OK
Having read a number of books brought to us by Wharton Publishing, this one was a bit disappointing. Wharton has high standards for its business books, requiring them to be relevant, timely, empirically based, conceptually sound, and implementable in real decision settings. While this book does meet those criteria, I felt the concentration on the moral intelligence topic was diluted by what I perceived to be over-attention to emotional intelligence. I didn't feel the strength and focus I anticipated, particularly given my high expectations of Wharton books.

4-0 out of 5 stars A message that outlasts time
Yesterday I was reminded of this awesome little book after interviewing someone who listed it as one of his favorite business reads. George S. Clason's "The Richest Man In Babylon" is one of the best books I have ever read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you'll ever need to know about money?
I have read and re-read Clasons book, and I honestly believe that his simple, thought provoking and powerful story, contains all the truths one has to learn about when it comes to the subject of money.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, effective, and very powerful.
Here is a book written for literally anyone who wants to learn lessons for life on how to get rich. And for all those desperados out there dreaming of getting fantastically rich with ridiculously little effort: here is your guide. 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting perspective on business
Having owned a manufacturing business for 15 years, I was always focused on growth. Recently sold the business, and now looking for next venture/opportunity.
4-0 out of 5 stars Big bright stories about small great companies
Some companies intentionally stay small so that they can be the best at what they do. In the world of globalization, these companies oppose the trend toward unbridled growth. They want to be strong, local and contained. Magazine writer and author Bo Burlingham provides profiles, or "field reports," covering 14 "small giants" - companies whose hands-on leaders kept them small, involved in their communities and focused on quality. Burlingham sometimes takes you up close and personal with his characters, so you read about their divorces, kids, personal finances and how long they worked in the stock room, as well as about the history of their companies. This magazine-style level of personal detail makes it clear that his mission isn't to teach you how to run a small giant, but to explore the nature of locally rooted, passionately led, deliberately small companies. We find that the author's focus on unique privately held companies is very valuable for the leaders of small businesses, especially those who are deciding just how big they want their companies to become.

5-0 out of 5 stars There Are No Formulas for Greatness But Many Paths
Bo Burlingham, the best reporter on small business working today, has provided us a valuable insight by looking deeply at what makes some small companies great -- and telling us why this is important.I first read this book in February and decided it was worth a second read so I put it on that stack of select books. I recently completed a careful second read.I found it to be a much better book than I anticipated. Most business books can be skimmed and the usually obvious 'lessons' cataloged quickly but "Small Giants" needs to be read carefully. The lessons readers take away will vary according to their interests and point of view.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'd rather be nice.
I would much rather be considered nice and earn my way through this world the way I am.Being myself in the business arena has worked well for me thus far, and I don't care if the trend is to deviate from feminity.I think we should respect everyone, and not propegate the evolution of a sexless society. All in all, I would much rather be a nice person and have people like me than be a b%tch with a nice office.People remember you by how you made them feel, not by how much money or power you had.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ever wonder how you appear to others?
This book was amazing! It really made me see how I appeared to others. Some thing that I have been doing that I thought helped me has most likely been why I haven't been more successful. What an eye opener!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great primer on business and ethics...
Ethics is one of the topics that can be very stimulating or very dry.Fortunately, John R. Boatright is able to present a very engaging discussion filled with critical thinking, and practical examples. The examples mentioned are relevant and timely to any contemporary discussion of ethical issues in business. As a student of business, I commend any person interested in the topic to delve inside this great piece.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but rather uneven coverage for an intro text.
One benefit of this book is that it contains articles, commentary, and discussion questions all in one text.It also covers a wide variety of issues, which is good since business ethics is a vast subject. On the negative side, I don't think the organization of the sections is the most effective way to approach the topic. The sections are organized based on a 1991 survey of CEOs in which the participants ranked their most important types of ethical dilemmas. As a result, there isn't the logical flow or progression of ideas from chapter to chapter that one might expect from a philosophy book. Unfortunately, the pragmatic interests of CEOs are not the same as the educational needs of students who are new to business ethics. There is also no discussion of ethical theories and no direct interaction between the articles. On the whole, this book may be beneficial if used in conjunction with a survey of ethical theories and ethical decision-making, but taken by itself it makes for a rather uneven introduction to business ethics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absoulutely Incredible
I ordered 75 books for downtown business owners knowing that this book would be an asset in all of their lives and businesses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Specific advice and examples; from a friend
As a business executive I soon discovered that most of what I really needed to know was passed along by word of mouth- the gold mined through hard experience. Particularly if you are starting a new venture, defining yourself as a leader, or wanting to lead in a way that you feel good about because it brings your beliefs into acton, this book can give you those nuggets of wisdom in a structured way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money and go practice the Golden Rule
This more I think about this book, the more thought provoking it becomes.First, I find it amazing that anyone could take a belief that's widely known (practically a cliche), add nothing of substance to it, and actually write a book about it.Second, I find it even more amazing that it took 134 pages to make the Golden Rule applicable to business.Third, and perhaps the most amazing of all, is the fact that I actually spent my own hard earned money on this book. What amazing insights did I think would be uncovered?
4-0 out of 5 stars Return to the Golden Rule
In a recent newspaper, in one day ...Enron chief pleads not guilty, Adelphia execs found guilty, no retrial in stock scandal ... and this was just the front page of the business section. On that same page, I noted the use of the phrase, "ethically amoral." Have we finally reached a point where we can construct such phrases? Corruption, moral relativism, the meaning of "is," have you had enough?

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Consumer Resource
This book does a great job of covering several areas of debt that all consumers will find helpful. It is written in an easy to understand language, yet rich with detail and a variety areas covered. The chapter on debt collections touched on the topic of statute of limitations, which is very important to many consumers, including me.I found that two other books that I read on consumer debt did not deal at all with this important topic.I thank Garrett Sutton (and contributor Gerri Detweiler) for a very valuable book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book with lots of different information.
I read this book to get a little more famaliar with budgets, and was very impressed with how many things this book touched on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Consumer Credit/Debt Resource!
The ABC's of Getting Out of Debt:Trade Your Bad Debt for Good Debt and Your Bad Credit for Good Credit really stands out among the many credit and debt related books available to consumers for many reasons. For starters, the book covers the topic of credit and debt in a very thorough and objective manner. Such critical, but often overlooked, topics as the health effects of debt are addressed. In addition, the book provides very simple and practical steps to help consumers that are struggling with credit and/or debt problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most valuable read of my MBA
Gareth Morgan's book provides an antidote to the finance, marketing and HR texts that are required reading for an MBA student. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for anyone in business or professional field
This book was part of my Professional Ethics class. I have to say I was very skeptical (as the textbooks are never fun and one guy gave it a poor review) at first. However, after reading the book I have learned a lot. Ethics is not a matter of conservative or liberal (if that's true than god himself has to be a liberal not to mention bible talked about ethical behavior too). This book focused on why we need ethics in business and how proper ethics enforcement can save a business from corruption and other questionable behavior which eventually may bring down a business (think Enron). It talked about both sides and didn't force someone's opinion on us rather helped us make our own decision which will be ethical and benefiting to the business. Although it was my text book I'd recommend this book to anyone as part of business strategy making.

3-0 out of 5 stars Biased, but a good primer on business ethics
This book is a good primer on business ethics, and it would be even better if the writer / editors hadn't shown their bias with their selections of included material.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Critical Compendium
This book is a critical reader, and it's probably the most highly used text in business ethics today. Those who reviewed this book negatively sound like people looking for a fun, non-academic overview of the field. If so, this book isn't it. These are articles published in top academic journals, edited for readability, by scholars who are addressing the fundamental issues in a wide range of topics. It's meant to expose the span of the field and still give students (not light readers) exposure to contemporary literature that touches on the most salient points. It's meant to be a starting point to deeper research in any given topic. As such, the book is a complete success. B & B do a great job (here as in other ethics compendiums) of providing a framework that makes it easy for a professor to expose her students to the field in one swoop. They do a fine editorial job, stripping the articles of padding, and they work hard to keep the offerings up to date (passing on older articles that are superceded by fresh insights that touch on contemporary challenges and technologies; look for something relating to the corporate scandals of this last year in the next edition). If you are a student looking for an overview on business ethics, this book is the correct starting point. If you are someone looking for light reading about corporate corruption, with illustrations and full-color photos, stick to People magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mythic photography and wisdom!
I have always been a sucker for a man wearing a cowboy hat, and you combine that with the cowboy code and you have a winner. This book is a great mix of beautiful western photography and cowboy morals.Having been around a lot of cowboys in real life they don't have the market cornered on ethics, but we would all be better people if we tried to live by the mythic code of the west.I also have to recommend the Modern Day western "Across the High Lonesome" --think "Lonesome Dove" only with mules!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Quick Read on a Complex Subject for Our Time
This book was loaned to me by a person engaged in overseeing ethical considerations in medical testing. Given my interest in ethics in the software industry, I found this book fascinating. I've ordered my own copy. James Owens has written a book that can be applied far beyond his target of the financial world. ALL PEOPLE of all nationalities and persuasions should read and embrace this book. As James says several times, it's easy to tell the difference between Right and Wrong. Embracing the ten principles, and especially "Do What Has to Be Done", can lead us to a much improved world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Anyone's Desk
This is a great "coffee table" book, though it is in paperback. It is not meant to be read like a book, but to be flipped through time and time again. The photographs are outstanding; world famous. The "Cowboy Ethics" are simple, straight forward, and are meant to cause some thought. There are numerous quotes in the book from classic western authors and actors to back up the "ethics".Leave this book on top of a desk in any business office, and it will definitely leave the reader with some new thoughts as they head to the water cooler... ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The Bottom Line: the 3BL Fad Promises More than it Delivers
Triple bottom line (3BL) accounting promises to keep score of "people, profits, and planet" -- meaning that it enables a company to measure not only its financial results, but also its environmental, and social impact as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding service
It was very nice to hear when my book was shipped. Good job.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little dry, but very current and interesting case studies.
The actual chapter text is a little dry and sometimes confusing, but the layout is good and the case studies at the end of the chapters are VERY interesting and thought-provoking.I may not have gotten through the class with an A if not for the way the book is so well organized and clear. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Few Tips on Not Being a Sucker
As a returning-college-student studying finance, this book provides an interesting basis for understanding some fundamental legal changes over the past 30 years.I highly recommend this book if you have an interest in stocks or are an investor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting topic; labored writing
Whence Stewart's Pulitzer, I wonder?Presumably because he got the scoop on other reporters, and dug up interesting facts and connections. As a series of newspaper articles, this doubtless made for riveting stuff. As a book, it does not.Stewart hews closely to the facts, detailing trade after trade, insider exchange after insider exchange. In short course, every trade begins to look like every other trade, every incremental corruption like every other, every trader, arbitrageur, I-banker, etc., like every other.Unless you're very familiar with Wall street, and fairly steeped in the terminology and business of modern finance, you -- as I did -- may tire of the repetition.Stewart rarely steps back from the minutiae to consider broader contextual themes (political, social, cultural, etc.).Some deeper historical perspective would have enlivened DoT greatly. So, too, would a bit more analysis.Stewart reserves almost all judgment for the opening and closing chapters of DoT.The result is a 500 page book that reads like a recitation of details. To boot, Stewart's prose is pedestrian in the extreme.Overall, a disappointing read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Greed is good and this book too.
Vivid account about the corporate take-over wave in the 80s and the boom and crash of the junk-bond industry. Sometimes, a bit lenghty, but very absorbing anyway. Only read it if you are really interested, otherwwise I would suggest "Predator's Ball". ... Read more
