I'd rather be nice.
I would much rather be considered nice and earn my way through this world the way I am.Being myself in the business arena has worked well for me thus far, and I don't care if the trend is to deviate from feminity.I think we should respect everyone, and not propegate the evolution of a sexless society.All in all, I would much rather be a nice person and have people like me than be a b%tch with a nice office.People remember you by how you made them feel, not by how much money or power you had.

Ever wonder how you appear to others?
This book was amazing!It really made me see how I appeared to others.Some thing that I have been doing that I thought helped me has most likely been why I haven't been more successful.What an eye opener!

What every woman should know!
I read about this book - actually, I consider it a textbook - when searching for tools on expanding my career. I usually wouldn't buy something like this, and instead look for similar information from free 'Net sources. But on a whim, I bought it, and am so glad I did. I'm not even halfway through and what I've learned already has helped me to speak and express myself in a way that gets people's attention, and has improved my professional image. One of the best tips, which comes early in the book, is catching myself using the "I think/like/don't like" phrase when I want to discuss facts. I do it, so I don't look like a know-it-all. Dr. Mindell, however, shows several ways to express facts without appearing as though I have all the answers.

I bought this book at a womens' leadership conference a couple of years ago.I read it cover-to-cover and decided to try the skills covered when communicating in my office.My supervisors' opinions of me changed drastically - they began to view me as surly and defiant.I didn't think any of the verbage alternatives were rude, but in the organization where I was working, the higher-ups expected you to consider them omnipotent and not have an opinion of your own.Ultimately one should consider their audience and adjust their language accordingly. ... Practical advice for women leaders
The Girls Guide to Being a Boss (without being a bitch) is a down-to-earth guidebook for women in leadership positions. It is written how we might talk amongst friends, in a straightforward manner. The bulleted lists, succinct paragraphs, personal anecdotes, and interviews with women leaders made the book a quick read.

As a first time manager, I was thrilled to see advertisement for this book.It really was the title that attracted me to it.I was delighted to learn that my intuition about my employees behavior was not my imagination, and this book nailed it.It was interesting to read about people behavior, gossip, reluctunce of male counterparts to cooperate in workplace.This easy to read book was pure blessing with its down to earth advice and excellent reference index.Once I finished reading this book, I was able to continue my management education thru referring to other book materials that address leadership issues and what is means to be a female manager.This is great book for both managers and employees.It does not matter is you work in corporate world or you own your business.Advice from this book applies to all work environments. ... Women's Guidebook
Gail Evans really hits it on the head with this book. Having been a woman in business for almost 20 years, I wish I had read this when I was 20.A must read for any woman working in the business world, even if only to "understand" the mindset of men which will help you to make better decisions and choices.Just understanding how a man is thinking about you in "business" can help you be more successful and empowered.

Gail Evans is amazing.She really knows what she is talking about!I refer to this book often in my career.Really helps me to feel good about decisions and not second guess myself.I tell everyone about it and have even given it as gifts to those that are starting out in their careers and those I see struggling in the workplace.Highly recommended!

Insightful
This book points out a lot of things women might be aware of but don't really think about.It really changed my perspective and the whole office politic games.I bought this book are a couple of women friends in management and would recommend this to anyone in a supervisor position.

Learn to play hardball--woman style
This review is a collaborative writing project completed by a ENGL/227 class at DeVry University in beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Good guidance for Women
Working in a male-dominated company in a male-dominated field (sales) I had noticed some of the behaviors mentioned in this book. However, "Hardball" gave me insight into WHY I saw these behaviors and how to deal with them. The book is getting a little dated (the power suit/skirt is out, the power suit with slacks is the choice of women executives these days) but still very good information. You must keep in mind that not ALL men think this way - as with all generalizations you have to keep flexible and adapt to the situation. I have financially benefited from this book
I read this book 2 years ago and it solidified my view that negotiation was something I had to do more of. While the first half of the book was a little depressing to read, the advice in the second half on what to do about it was inspiring. I personally took solace in the fact that I didn't have to change my personality to ask for and get what I wanted.
A book every woman should read.
This is a very important book for all women.It reveals how women have put themselves in positions of disadvantage, by basically not sticking up for ourselves, devaluing our worth, and just not asking for what we deserve.This book, although not always the snappiest read, is full of interesting statistics and studies.It is life-changing.

Advice Helpful to Women at All Stages of Career
I bought the book "Be Your Own Mentor" during a transitional time in my career. The advice offered has provided me with many great ideas on advancing my career. I thought the get ahead basics were especially helpful. As I was looking for a new position, the job search advice helped me to form opinions on how this new position could be a stepping stone to my future. It urged me to take a look at my career as a progression of jobs on my resume.Additionally, Sheila Wllington offered advice that I had not read in traditional job search books. I think this book is helpful to women at all stages of their career whether just starting out or ready for a mid-career change. If you think you need some advice from successful women and need some ideas on how to further your career I highly recommend this book.

A must read for women in business
I wish this book had been around when I was just starting out in business. I would be a lot better off today if I had gotten the great advice it gives out.Much of the writing is based on research done at Catalyst, so is fact-based.Shelia Wellington uses her vast experience and connections to give a road map for success for women in the business world.Many nuggets of advice from women who have reached the highest levels in their careers.A must read.

Put "personal publicity" on your mentoring agenda!
Being your own mentor is a critical concept and certainly includes mastering the art of networking. But a good self-mentoring plan must also include achieving corporate and community visibility. Great Book! Food for daily thought and well worth your purchase
Vickie is amazing. Her story is amazing. She writes her book from the other side of accomplishment of fears, heartbreak, dissappointment, etc. There are great ideas to take with you on your journey of success and you should bring your highlighter so you can refer back to some great words of encouragement along your way. I have thouroughly enjoyed this book and I plan to share it with my women friends. We all can use a little push.

Easy to read and follow the thought process.
Milazzo explains how passion emerges and evolves and gives excellent real-life examples of women who became successful by using ideas in this book. This book is filled with excellent advice gained from experience. As Vickie says, she doesn't need a blow dryer to ride a camel and sleep in the Sahara desert. You have to love a woman who is beyond adventurous, has conquered fear and is willing to share her life and wisdom with the world. There is great advice about how to avoid distractions and a wise approach to developing daily rituals to nurture our spirits. Successful women respect the complexity of any chosen path and become students for life.The book is easy to read and follow the thought process.

This Book has Changed my Life.
I have to say, I felt pretty disgusted with myself, having to pretend to be insecure and self-depreciating, just to get other women to like me. But by God it works.
Women Working Wisely
This book has been an invaluable reference and resource for me.Pat Heim's experience in addressing relationally aggressive behaviors between women in the workplace shows through in every page she writes.With "In the Company of Women" she adds one more feather to her impressive cap and advances each reader's understanding of this important issue.

Valuable and authoritative information
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I thank her very much.The authors have described processes that explain what I have observed, but couldn't quite understand, until reading this book.Why women have an incredible memory for hurts and injustices; why women can be so 'catty' amongst themselves; why women can talk so intimately and so easily with each other and with men... I could go on and on with the questions I've always had about women.Learning about the 'tend and befriend' hormone and about the Darwinian survival characteristics of many of these behaviors helps men (as well as women) understand and not personalize these inherent patterns.I especially appreciated the research citations and the sound scientific foundations of the authors' conclusions.I have recommended this book to a dozen people I know, and I think it's a worthwhile read for any adult who works with, is in a relationship with, or is a woman - and I guess that's everyone. ... Incredibly Useful
I thought when I first look at this book it was for business women. I could not have been more wrong. This book offers useful information that every woman can use in her every day life-- how to negotiate, not only with your boss but with your husband, your children and with the President of the local PTA. I find by using the techniques in the book I get more of what I want more often.
A Woman's Guide to Successful Negotiating: How to Convince, Collaborate, & Create Your Way to Agreement
Practical and Insightful
Okay, but much better negotiating books out there.
This book has a lot of suggestions for how women can be more effective negotiators. However, if you're looking for a book to read I found Women Don't Ask by Linda Babcock to be much more insightful and a much better read.

Statistics for women
I thought this book was a great read, based on the power of the statistics alone.Lots of great information about profitable women- owned businesses, as well as hearing the stories from the women who made it themselves.

Very good future ahead of me
I absolutely loved this book! When I originally read Stanley's Millionare Next Door, I was put off that all the data was regarding men (but that it is still a very good book). I was suprised to stumble on this book and am very glad that I did!
Appendices and Index are Worth It!
The appedices in this book are worth the entire price. Any new or returning entrepreneur should see these before planning their next moves.Finally, the author has included an index, a suprising ommission in the previous books. ... Read more

We can all learn from each other....
I loved this book, being a new mom I love to hear experiences from seasoned moms and new moms alike. This book was not what I expected, which was a good thing, I thought it would be working moms bashing stay at home moms and vice versa and that's not what I got from the book at all. I think we all need to respect each others decisions and learn from each other and do whats best for us and our own family. Definitely recommend this book for all moms!

A little diversity please!
I got through about 6 of these essays when I decided to flip through the book and read the biography of the authors since it was all starting to sound the same.All of these women are writers!!How is this a good sampling of real women?These are women with careers that can be translated into part time work through free lance.And it is difficult to feel the struggle of the women that have full time babysitters when they are "stay at home" moms.I am a working mom in a technical field where it very difficult to take off years and then go back to the work force or do anything part time.It would have been nice to hear the voices of people in similar situations.

Highly valuable book, even if you're not a self-help type
I was just out of college when my friend's mother gave me this book.My friend and I rolled our eyes - we were *definitely* not self-help-book readers.I still am not.But many times over the past ten years I have referenced this book in conversations with friends. I have found myself applying many of the tips that Ms. White provides. You don't have to be a hyper-ambitious, ladder-climbing corporate professional to get something out of this book. Among the tenets that have stood out to me over the years are:
Enjoyed, learned but read it all with a grain of salt!
I have never believed, or wanted to believe, in the feminist views of the world. I like to believe that if we focus on results, deliverables, and excellent performance and good merit, we will indeed get ahead - man or woman - in corporate america. Reading this book however did have certain advice in handling some situations that only arise for women in the workplace. Not every bit of advice or circumstance applies to all of us, but overall, this was a very good read, I took bits and pieces of advice from Kate and really did enjoy her stories and her candid sharing of the experience she had been through. I really do recommend it to everyone - not just women. It's good to be aware of our ingrained beliefs and learn to let go of them and face life with a much more open mind.

Still Relevant For Today
I was never a fan of Malloy's books when I first read them in the 1980s and 1990s. But I must admit that his basic principles hold true today. Classic attire is best for interviews and companies (such as pharmaceutical sales) that are still traditional suits-only fields. He is also correct when he says that the fashion industry works against professional attire for women, and that if you are excessively stylish in a corporate setting, you will lose credibility. Changing fashion styles are an incredible waste of money. However, you should disregard the outdated suits, rigid hairstyles and hard attache case in favor of more contemporary classic styles. A better book for that is "Dressing Smart" by Chic Simple Author Kim Johnson-Gross. Moreover, if you work in a creative field, you must not follow the navy & white starched formula of dressing--this could get you demoted. Malloy does mention this point, but doesn't really advise for creative jobs.

read it and do what it says
All women should read it and do what it says.As a manager, I know what high importance is placed on presentation.In the workplace today, people have become too casual.Why not do all you can to earn more money, gain more respect and be percieved optimally as a professional? It is very easy for women to make wardrobe mistakes at the office today because of the sexy and casual fashions we see in all the stores.This is a bible for the working woman!

Classic, Timeless Advice
This new edition of "Women's Dress for Success" covers a lot more than clothes and accessories, and is a treasure trove of advice for any woman interested in self improvement. For most of us, there is usually room for "image enhancement," in how we present ourselves to the world, as our way of dressing and speaking, etc. all sends a message. John Molloy's recommendations are also helpful if you are on a budget. His "fabric test," color combinations, and style tips will save you a lot of money, and you can even do well using his guidelines shopping in a thrift store! You will no longer buy without planning, the things in your closet will mix and match properly, and you will not buy something "just because it's on sale," and find later that it doesn't really look good with anything else you own.

Good but not great.
I would have saved a lot of time if I had just gotten the list of the mistakes (both career wise & money wise) and read them myself. Even though the mistakes are a good reminder, they were not groundbreaking. Pay attention that this is the "abridged version" which may be the reason why I did not care much for the fluff that came along with each mistake. The mistake, in itself, was self-explanatory.

Nice Girls Don't Get Rich
Am I an "ostrich" or an "abdicator?" interesting, however not useful
I listened to the audio book version of this book. At first, it seemed quite refreshing to know men and women were so different that you could explain in your work environment why people behaved like that. However, it just didn't give any solution and keep saying it over and over again in this book can bore anyone.
Interesting, but does not reflect all realities
The science of psycholinguistics is one of the hardest to write in, from what I see. For one, it's necessary to keep in mind that what may be the norm in a certain place for a certain time is not, de facto, what may apply to other places and periods. Also, the cultural influences on language happen to change fast, and the books that were relevant and up-to-date just a few years ago seem disappointingly irrelevant today.
A disappointment but still relevant book
I have read Deborah Tannen's first 2 books and I found them groudbreaking and very informative.This book however seems to be too much of a rehash of her first 2 books with a little bit of business communication stuck in the middle.I was disappointed by the book and believe there are better books out there than this one. ... Didn't want to put it down!
As a beginning golfer who has so much to learn, I have found the answers to so many of my questions in this great book. Great concise information -very easy reading, informative and entertaining book.

I am new to the financial industry and quickly discovered that golf is a common method of doing business.A colleague of mine heard me discussing this and suggested that I read this book as a prelude to my golfing with clients. I took the advice. Much of the book is directed towards women who are new to the game. However it is applicable to anyone interested in playing golf in a business setting. In fact there is a chapter devoted to men golfing with women decision makers. It includes specific suggestions on how to make a novice woman golfer feel comfortable. Again, though relating to women, most of the suggestions apply to both men and women. I remember when I started golfing, though not in a business setting there was still that uncomfortable feeling one can get in an unfamiliar environment. I would have found this book a confidence builder then as much as I do now as my golfing takes on a business orientation. I highly recommend this book to both men and women who intend to start using golf as a business asset.
