I've been trying to organize my life for over 20 years, and have read innumerable books on the subject. While each one has offered something to add to the puzzle, none of them has told the whole story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Self-Help Book EVER!!
I have read a lot of self-help books, and none of them have ever broken things down into small enough steps so you could actually DO what they're encouraging you to do!! It's like the self-help of Self-Help books. So besides having a lot of GREAT and innovative ideas, it's also very practical as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential "Energy Management" Manifesto
As opposed to simple time management, this book covers the much-neglected dimension of energy management, arguing that it's more effective to focus on structuring your energy to optimize your productivity and your experience. To do this, the four dimensions of energy are covered (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual), and exercises and scorecards are provided to help you gauge yourself in these areas.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ideas worthy of incorporating into your life
In the realm of self-help and self-renewal books, I would describe myself as curious but skeptical. So often authors don't deliver on their promises and claims.Despite its self-helpish title, I think this book provides a fresh look at personal renewal and practical solutions that are carefully described in the lives of the people they talk about. It's written to address overworked executives, but it applies to anyone whose life is OUT OF BALANCE. You may not relate to the stories of the executive life, but the tools are thoughtful and invaluable.Using rituals is an old idea, but in the context of managing energy, it takes on greater significance.I finished the book with a sense of joy that I could accomplish so much more than I thought just by managing my energy better.Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I always get books from our interlibrary loan system before I buy, this is definitely one that I will be putting on my shelf. I have not finished the book yet but I have learned so much in the first third that I know I will be referring back to it often. There is something for everyone in this book, read it and understand why you have a problem and how to fix it for you (not anyone else, you).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Relatively straightforward book that does as the title suggests and organizes from the person's habits, quirks and follies to their environment. Ms. Morgenstern may not say anything that revolutionizes the idea of organizing one's space according to how you'll use it, but she puts forth solid theory, and then proceeds to detail how to put her method of first organizing what the space is used for, who uses it, which items need to be there, and finally how to make it all fit together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Career saving
When I was managing a software development group, a programmer on the team showed up at work one day with wrist braces. Turns out typing had become agony for him. He read this book, then diligently and conscientiously followed some of the recommended practices (strength training, yoga, serious workplace ergonomic changes). The wrist braces are gone, and his career has been saved.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I bought this book after all the glowing reports and am happy to say it lived up to my expectations. Just improving my posture (one of the suggestions) has helped with my RSI.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Want To Know Where I'd Be Without This Book
I have been putting off writing my review because I have so much to say and in the meantime my hands are not yet a hundred percent. BUT it is thanks to this book (inconjunction with THE TRIGGERPOINT THERAPY WORKBOOK, which I found later) that I am not disabled today. The doctors I went to were not only shockingly unkind but dangerously misinformed...so I feel it is my duty to pass the info. on ASAP and I will revise this review later.

5-0 out of 5 stars Time Management
I have to be honest and say that Time Management from the Inside Out is the first "time management" book I have read; therefore, I have nothing else to compare it to. However, during my first year in college, I was forced to take a time management course and I must say Time Management from the Inside Out was a far out better course than the one I took in college. Not only does Julie Morgenstern walks us step by step on how to schedule our time, but she helps us define our "Big-Picture Goals". Chapter 9: defining your goals and activities was my favorite chapter because she made us dream BIG and made me believe our goals were manageable. I also liked that she offered real life examples so people can relate to them and follow the solution that was given. This book is easy reading but it took me a while to finish because she makes us reflect on many issues such as the current behavior one carries in which prevents us to move forward. She offers several exercises that can help one pin point a problem. This was really helpful. I am a 21- year old transfer student about to continue my studies at UCLA and I cannot wait to put into practice the advice Julie Morgenstern offered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truly Effective
I can't help but express my disapproval at how a review from 2000, which rated this book one star, is a spotlight review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on decision making
This book discusses ten common errors that people make in decision making, and how to avoid them. When I first saw this title, I was not that interested, because I wanted a book on how to make decisions, not on the errors that people make. After reading it, I find the information to be very useful and practical. This is one of my all time favorite books, I go back to it every so often, and even after reading it a few times I find myself making some of the errors that are discussed in the text. Hopefully I don't make as many as I used to! I know the ideas in this book have been a very substantial help in improving my decision making process, and I am getting better as time goes by. Very highly recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this simple book about the process behind good decisions
I write about scientific careers, and one of my favorite books is Decision Traps. I recommend this book to anyone who is facing a major career decision, and who would like to separate the emotion from the facts in the decision process. Too often we cloud our decisions with personal feelings and ill-conceived "rules of thumb." This book will help you eliminate decision shortcuts which traditionally DON'T lead to the best answer. It worked for me in my personal life as well. Really helps you understand how your mind works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Insightful, In a newer version
I read this book as part of a class in graduate school, and I found it to be quite practical, not only providing insights into ways that decisions can go wrong, but also steps that can be taken to reduce biases in your decisions due to errors in the process, although some of the strategies can only be effectively implemented at the organizational level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary Lou Quinlan Is a Dynamo
As a man, I got a lot out of reading Time Off for Good Behavior. Mary Lou showed me how I can get more out of life and work by being smarter, better AND by taking it easy occasionally. I could relate to many of her experiences and I felt I learned from how she coped. Anyone, male or female who wants to have a rich professional and personal life will gain by reading Mary Lou's insights.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Validating Must-Read!
Mary Lou Quinlan really knows what she's talking about. As athirtysomething single woman, reading "Time Off for Good Behavior" was extremely validating. Her own story and the stories of other women captured in this book are truly rivoting, and made me realize I am not alone.Amazing that the book summarizes how I've felt all of my working life(and even before then).A serious page-turner; you feel like you're having an initimate chat, rather than reading non-fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Potentially Life Changing Book
If you are a hard-charging, hard-working professional woman who takes her laptop to the beach, you will recognize yourself in Time Off for Good Behavior. I could identify with many of the Type A "good girl" women Quinlan describes. She's right on target. She makes you think about your daily life in a whole new way. Editorial Review

Why do so many seemingly successful professionals hit the wall in middle age, and decide to either radically scale back their careers or set off in an entirely new direction? Clinical psychologist Steven Berglas, a specialist in success-induced burnout, believes it stems from the "self-handicapping behavior" that baby boomers are exhibiting in record numbers as they climb the corporate ladder and find they aren't happy with what results. Terming the phenomena Supernova Burnout, Berglas defines this workplace ennui as "the constrictive effects of being branded a 'success'" and offers some advice for the psychological distress that is an increasing consequence. 5-0 out of 5 stars More common than you think ... when the adrenaline of chasing success stops working
There are countless examples of people who have worked and slaved for years in a tunnel vision quest to be top dog ... only to get there and after a while just walk out of a life they once desired like nothing else. Sometimes they say a change of heart did it ... but the psychology of success and the constant demand and expectations of others over time tips the scales to a real fear of failure. Many people prefer to go out with a bang than to fade away a has-been. An intriguing look that begs the question if success really does make one happy.

4-0 out of 5 stars When I thought I just had it
When I started reading the first few chapters, it was like the author was speaking directly to me, knowing what goes on inside my head. Actually, he even made me realize some things I never did myself. The only thing that hurt about this book is the author's writing style and his habit of using superfluous words. I mean when you have to run to a dictionary and back ten times in one chapter, it takes your mind off from the topic. The book is good if you want to understand the problem, but there aren't any real remedies inside this book. Until the very end, we were still discussing the problem and not the cure. Even in the last two chapters there are just more details about the problem yet no actual remedies.
5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptional read - insightful, clear, and well-written
Dr. Berglas has written an exceptional book that I would recommend to those who are facing workplace issues such as burnout and "Isn't there more than this?" questioning. While I believe his research is relevant for all audiences - I would highly recommend it for people in large corporate settings -as well as those in supervisory roles.Personally, I picked up the book hoping to find some answers regarding the "dead ends" and the boredom I was starting to feel at my corporate job - and I found Dr. Berglas' book to be insightful and solutions-oriented for people like me...While the book is well-researched and deals with complex issues, it is clear and concise and should be easily understandable for all audiences to grasp...If this book is calling out to you for some reason, I highly recommend you read it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars This is an odd book
This is an odd book.He seems to talk out of both sides of his mouth:he tells you to use good ergonomic habits on one page, and on the next one to change the height of your chair, keyboard, etc., frequently so that you're not always "in the box" that makes everything be at the "right" angle.A good editor might have improved this book substantially.
3-0 out of 5 stars Some ok advice; some downright silly commentary
First, nearly every exercise Egoscue includes here has been borrowed or adapted from Yoga -- either from Asanas or restorative poses. He pretty much says so, but he doesn't say the Yogic work is more thorough. He does have some really goofy comments such as there is not benefit from ergonomic computer devices.A good ergonomic keyboard places your wrist flexion at the proper angle, and your fingers are not cramped as with traditional keyboards.Another weird comment is his rationale for why typist in the old days didn't get carpal tunnel. He claims it is because people were stronger then.I don't think so, considering the huge leap in women sports in high school & college. The true reason is because the old typewriters had no place to rest the wrists, a habit nowadays that puts pressure right on the carpal tunnel area.He does make one good common sense observation that the human body was designed to move around and not be constricted, and the less the body is in contact with a chair or any other object for long periods of time, the less stress on the body. All in all, a very skimpy book that could have been a 10 page brochure with a poster sized pull out for the exercises.

4-0 out of 5 stars It really works -- but only if you take the time!
Egoscue says that most chronic pain is caused by poor posture and poor body mechanics (e.g., moving wrong). The solution -- a set of stretches that teach you good posture and good body mechanics. These "E-cises" are gentle and easy to perform. They do take a bit of time -- more than an hour for people who use PCs all day -- but the results are amazing. The biggest problem with this book can only addressed by the reader:this advice does you no good unless you lay down and do the E-cises.Don't let the lengthy time daunt you though -- the time required shrinks after a few weeks, and the relief is well worth it.The 5-minute stretches are helpful, too.The reviewers who didn't like this book all sound like they never actually tried the E-cises.

5-0 out of 5 stars I use it everyday
Kurt Wright presented a seminar to our management team ten years ago and it changed my life. I was fortunate to participate in a tele-seminar with him that was even more valuable. His approach to asking "right" questions that allows the other person to arrive at their own conclusions has deepened my relationship with colleagues, friends and family. It has totally changed me from a micro-manager to someone who trusts others to achieve objectives. I have rarely been let down when I showed confidence in other's competence to get things done.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Insightful Book
The Author definitely has a deep understanding of the negative effects that work can have on your health.I particularly liked the idea of thinking of your career as a collage rather than a photo (i.e., designing a composite career).5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary resource - Used as required text for courses
Toxic Work is a wonderful resource.I have used the book as a required text for both my graduate level Managment Training and Development and Human Resource Management courses. My students, without exception, rave about the content.Dr. Reinhold's humor and insight have provided me and over 100 of my students with a great set of career problem solving tools and a teriffic bibliography.I keep hoping that there will be a sequel ... perhaps Toxic Two.Keep them comming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Work is Less Toxic Now
Toxic Work is the first reference book in the career section which has a bibliography worth reading. The book not only does all the work for you by collecting and organizing relevent resources, but provides a wealth ofexamples. The author doesn't give pat answers, but takes the reader throughthe problem-solving process. I found the book empowering because itprovides the structure and information I needed to generate a successfulgame plan. I became proactive, and am happily employed at the same job thatsent me to the book store looking for an escape. ... Read more
