2-0 out of 5 stars Academia Ahoy
I find this book provides an insightful deconstruction of things past - the B2B/B2C business models of the new economy pre April 2001, but neither provides insight into the realities of todays strategic use of the internet as a business channel/media, nor of lessons learned from past failures.4-0 out of 5 stars Good summary of the state of play
I was looking for an e-business book that would be useful for the MBA classes I teach - this fits the bill nicely.Readable, not technical, not overly academic, and not full of the usual e-hype!In fact, tends to a negative outlook. The "atomic business models" are familiar, but it's worthwhile to have them defined with some rigour.Useful mini-case studies and anecdotes.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you' ve read one, you' ve read them all....
It seems that all books that refer to ecommerce and respective issues are all alike. This is not a bad book. On the contrary, it makes some very interesting points. But it is no breakthrough. It's just a different way of categorizing the different forms of business currently online. The proposed models are undoubtedly interesting and pretty much cover everything. Unless you are new in this area, don't bother. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Mighty Eagle is floundering!
Genre: Business
5-0 out of 5 stars 2005 Writers Notes Book Award Winner
Outsourcing has become one of those hot button words in America, especially within political discourse, but too few people understand that movements within a capitalist economy are a byproduct of trends and pervasive thought rather than any one deliberate decision. Since an economy is composed of people, not money, Mr. England begins with the individual by taking the Maslow approach: only after a person is secure and sound can that person begin to integrate into a unit and self-actualize, contribute to the whole with inspiration and creativity. A company desires the best of its employees, but when it downsizes, the individual becomes fearful, drawing him into a protection response, hardly able to operate at his best. England looks at both the worker and the company, offering ways for each to take responsibility for his future while restoring belief in the American dream.

1-0 out of 5 stars A book that needs updating
This book needs its concepts and focus updated and broaden.I found the book had a very narrow point of view, focusing only on a government perspective of approaching project and engineering management, and providing very little on private industry's management point of view in the book.Even when the book repeats again and again concepts on how government, DoD and NASA do business, the concepts it presents are different (outdated) from how government and DoD do business presently. In short, the book needs to be updated extensively, perhaps a brand new one written altogether.

5-0 out of 5 stars A grad student's review
Howard Eisner's book is an outstanding work that bridges the gulf between project management and systems engineering. As a 46 year old student of Dr Eisner's, I assert this with 25 years of experience in both disciplines. His book has been a wonderful aid to refreshing and updating my skills.Ifa section with the answers to the problems had been included, I would havesaid SIX stars...Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Boundaries Are Self-Imposed
The title is a misnomer: Although the authors do indeed suggest how to "break through the chains of organizational structure", they provide an enlightening explanation of four different types of boundaries (vertical, horizontal, external, and geographic) which give definition to any organization. They do not advocate the total elimination of these boundaries (which is impossible, anyway); rather, they suggest how to rearrange them so that an organization can thrive. For the authors, there is what they call "A New World Order":5-0 out of 5 stars Boundaryless Organization Fieldbook Review

4-0 out of 5 stars Jumping Off Point Into Intellectual Capital
As an occassional reader of business literature and a new convert to the importance of knowledge management, I found Stewart's book a wonderful introduction to this important organizational management strategy.1-0 out of 5 stars Stewart treats us all like children
I started reading this book with the best intentions. However, when Stewart begins with such kindergarten level assertations, I knew as a Business student, there was no point in continuing reading this book.Stewart, a Fortune Editor, has no business training: he is a Harvard English major, and this is clearly shown in his work.If one reads his fortune articles, they are equally poorly written with bad information.I would suggest that one spend their money on better Management authors such as Jon Katzenbach or Peter Drucker, both of whom actually have a clue. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A well-chosen and valuable collection
The value of a book of reprints mined from HBR's rich archive depends on the quality of selection by the miner. This is the best such anthology I have seen, with an excellent introduction which deserves very careful reading. To quote an early paragraph:
2-0 out of 5 stars Guilty oferrors its authors accuses businesses of makingn
The collection of articles from 1991 to 1996 primarily focuses on differently seeing in manufacturing. They have missed a majordiscontinuity, and used the fatal strategy in a time of change - listeningto the HRB customer's needs, the Hardware industries, with no prescience ofE-commerce or Web as vehicles for innovation. Harvard B School, like Sears, had missed the change

5-0 out of 5 stars Great anthology of important ideas in strategy
John Seely Brown has done us a big favor: he weeded through the business literature, picked a few authors that really help us "see differently," found works that describe their ideas in tight littlepackages, and put it all in one book. JSB's own framing comments are alsovaluable. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How growth-oriented business goals can kill the golden goose
Robert M. Tomasko's BIGGER ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER: THE NEW MINDSET FOR BUSINESS GROWTH draws some important distinctions between growth and expansion. While increased size is desirable, too often companies grow too quickly and many may ultimately see their demise in their very growth-oriented goals. Real growth lines in progress and knowing how to link success to strategic plans and logical organizational changes - the types of changes BIGGER ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER covers in chapters which probe growth cycles, judgement calls, and knowing how to access opportunity for its real-world applications.
5-0 out of 5 stars What is your mindset?
What we have in this volume is a brilliant explanation of what "real business growth" is, and, how to achieve and then sustain it. Tomasko suggests seven characteristics which "growers" share. They are guided and informed by a mindset which recognizes that real growth "is about reaching full potential, not maximum size. It means progress, not excess; it is fueled by imagination, not expansion." He devotes a separate chapter to each of the seven common characteristics. In Part 1, he describes what growth is and isn't, then in Part 2, he explains what growers do. They know what they need to know and where to locate it. They know what they want to achieve and tell the truth when pursuing it. They initiate creative attention to generate and sustain forward movement, meanwhile winning hearts and minds of others involved. They master what Tomasko characterizes as "momentum with bounce." They know when to let go, agreeing with Jason Jennings that "if it's DOA, bury it." And they "share the wealth" when collaborative effort achieves the given objectives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Management Book
Thank you for the book. It came in good time and was in good condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
This book aims to show CEOs how to achieve the impossible. Based on a study of 70 companies that managed to accomplish incredibly ambitious goals, it offers a straightforward and, for the most part, lucid set of guiding principles to reach breakthrough success. Author Bill Davidson anchors his prescription in the experiences of real companies and illustrates each point with copious anecdotes. Although he strays now and then into the jargon of the academic tribe, these digressions are rare and excusable. His case histories and tactical advice offer something of value to every CEO or senior manager. Werecommend this book to executives whose companies are trapped in strategic dead-ends and desperate to blast out, or to executives who would rather act before a crisis really blossoms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough
Breakthrough is an outstanding book.Davidson gives first-hand experiences with numerous successful breakthrough companies and synthesizes practical principles on how to craft and achieve the "Outrageous Objectives" of your company's next success cycle.I disagree with the reader below. While Good to Great is also an excellent book, Breakthrough provides deeper insights into the essential ingredients of breakthrough and gives more valuable, real world examples to illustrate them. ...
