5-0 out of 5 stars Sweatshops from the workers' perspective
I teach a course on Women and Work and Miriam Ching Louie's Sweatshop Warriors is the first book I have found that really describes sweatshops from the workers' perspectives, as agents rather than victims. The students really got it. I plan to use the book in this course from now on.

5-0 out of 5 stars A more sinister side of globalization
Miriam Ching Yoon Louie has a literary talent in exposing the ill effects of globalization on poor women of color in the American garment industry. Focusing on Chinese, Korean, and Mexican immigrants she documents how their labor is continuously being exploited without regard to their personal well-being. Transnational corporations seek their labor because it is cheap. It is these women who are the backbones of the forces of globalization and their stories need to be told. An added strength of this book is that the author doesn't just focus on the negative structural aspects but she also includes multiple instances of how these workers create social solidarity and fight for social change in their favor, even when up against the odds. Her personal involvement in these social movements is an added benefit. These poor women of color both produce and reproduce globalization on the local and global scale. It leaves one with the belief that there is hope after all for a fair and just world. This book will make you reevaluate the 'promises' of free trade agreements and economic growth. As one group prospers there is surely another group being disadvantaged. Overall, this book is accessible especially in discussions on the feminization of labor and migration that is not cluttered with jargon. Go ahead and take a gamble. I hope that it will alter your social stance on these important issues as it reinforced mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars In My Personal Top Ten
During my vacation, I've been reading "Sweatshop Warriors: Immigrant Women Workers Take on the Global Factory" by Miriam Ching Yoon Louie.Miriam has a multi-decade organizing history with low income women of color. She is the co-founder of the Women of Color Resource Center in Berkeley, and author of an amazing trainers' manual called WEdGE" Women's Education in the Global Economy."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide to the Generalized Work Place
Generally, I do not like sweeping generalizations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
In a global economy, you inevitably will work with people from other cultures. But since culture determines behavior, how can people from outside the United States best adapt to working in the American workplace? And, how do they perceive American workplace behavior? Author Craig Storti examines American culture and extracts six key themes that drive the U.S. workplace. In the process, he teaches his fellow Americans about their unexamined workplace behavior. That's refreshing. Looking at yourself from the outside helps you re-examine how you work with others. The process opens doors to a whole new evaluation process that could revitalize many businesses. Unfortunately, while Storti makes interesting cultural points, his book is repetitive and belabors obvious ideas. His practical advice on such topics as table manners, fashion, gift giving, eye contact, touching and even sending e-mail is valuable, but could have been presented better in succinct bullet point summaries. However, we appreciate his introduction to behavior, manners and mors in the cross-cultural workplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Atutorial for communication in the American workplace
Written by the founder and director of Communicating Across Cultures and a former Peace Corps volunteer, Americans At Work: A Guide To The Can-Do People is a straightforward introduction to how American culture pervades and affects the American workplace. From basic ideals driving American behaviors - such as an obsession with efficiency, intense competition, and the celebration of individualism - to specific tips, tricks, and techniques to better understand how one's American co-workers think and react, Americans At Work is a superb resource and a "must-read" especially for readers for another country striving to adapt to American customs, but also for Americans seeking to better understand the corporate mentality of their own workplaces. A step-by-step, plain-terms tutorial for communication in the American workplace especially for readers accustomed to more indirect cultures is absolutely priceless; for example, it stresses that what Americans consider direct other countries tend to consider rude, and a typical American worker won't be offended by a "no" but will be offended by a "yes" when the real answer is "no.

5-0 out of 5 stars TRUTH HUURTS?
GOOD BOOK. BUT I HAVE NEVER HAD AN INTERRACIAL FRIENDSHIP WITH A WHITE AMERICAN WOMAN. MY FRIENDS WERE EITHER EUROPEAN, ASIAN, AFRICAN, CARIBBEAN, SOUTH AMERICAN, OR BLACK. IM NOT EVEN INTERESTED IN CLOSING THE GAP WE'VE HAD BETWEEN EACH OTHER SINCE SLAVERY. AND EVEN IF WHITE WOMEN AND BLACK WOMEN ARE FRIENDS IN CORPORATE AMERICA, BLACK WOMEN STILL GET PAID LESS. ITS UNFAIR AND I DONT WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH SOMEONE WHO THINKS THE WORD WOMAN, FEMININE, OR LADY MEANS WHITE.

5-0 out of 5 stars At the Sharp End
Bell and Nkomo dive straight to the heart of the matter. They base their findings on comprehensive personal interviews of African-American and white women working as managers or executives. Ultimately, the authors hit the reader over the head with the obvious: People from strikingly different backgrounds bring profound personal differences to the workplace. Too often, organizations stupidly attempt homogenizing everyone into minor variations on the existing (typically---older, white, and male) leadership theme. Unusually (Bell and Nkomo cited no such cases), organizations may wisely embrace the differences so that the organization and its people benefit from a more perceptive and inclusive world view.4-0 out of 5 stars Imagining and working with the Other
If you are wondering why the Black woman in your section of your company doesn't seem to want to socialize with you or seems guarded around her White co-workers or why the White women in your organization get all riled up about sexism but are silent when it comes to racism this is the book for you. I recommend this book along with Divided Sisters for those who really want Black and White women to unite in the workplace. These two tomes will give you more than a clue. They'll give you guidelines as how to build a truly "diverse" workplace where everyone is welcomed AS THEY ARE and not as stereotypes others want them to play out. If you are a Black woman, you'll understand why you see your work status merely as a "job" and not as a career and why you feel so much like an outsider looking in at your organization.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Resource for Cost Cutting...
I worked in restaurants where I felt unappreciated. I pledged to not cut corners in making my staff feel valued in my own establishment. That seemed impossible once I looked at my bottom line. This book reminded me that cutting labor costs could lead to costlier recruiting expenses once my staff flees looking for other work. A simple improvement, such as outsourcing payroll to an online service, is convenient and saves money. I also learned that making my restaurant a safe and enjoyable environment is an act of employee retention. Encouraging my staff, or playing their favorite music in the kitchen, goes a long way in reducing turnover. Even the worst bosses start off with the best intentions. They eventually become so focused on the bottom line that they do not notice their staff's morale. This book shows you how to keep both in sight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book Wish Every Food Service Employee Would Read It !
The table of contents alone gives an impression of how thoroughly this book covers all the aspects of managing costs in restaurants and food service operations. The book is also well organized and accessible - important concepts are clearly explained, and examples are well chosen. And it is also timely: no matter how attractive or imaginative your restaurant might be, controlling costs is critical to maintaining financial stability in a competitive environment.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars thorough, insightful look at the oft-maligned mobile home
Wallis here presents an incredibly thorough, and amazingly respectful look at the history of the "mobile home".Well researched and masterfully integrated with the sociopolitical influences that have played such a large part in shaping the industry, this book is an incredible resource for those interested in the mobile home as a housing form, or for those researching some of its sister forms--modular and prefabricted housing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Salary.com CEO loves this book
This is the best book I have read about compensation, developing a pay structure and understanding how an organization sets pay.It is written to be interesting and understood by normal people with a slight inclination to learning how organizations set pay.Read just pages 30-70 and you learn most of what the book has to offer. To get the raise you need, read that section and then also research actual pay statistics for free on the web or if you are really serious, even buy premium salary reports that give the same numbers HR people use to evaluate "market pay" from salary sections of websites like Monster, AOL, Yahoo, Hotjobs, Careerbuilder and Salary.com.There are two numbers you need to know to calculate ranges of market pay: what do recruiters say you would earn by switching jobs (ask a headhunter or cruise above job boards to research) and what do HR managers report to surveys (look on salary sites).Having an opinion on these two numbers and then applying yourself to understanding the processes described in this book will make you a winner in the career long pay negotiation game.Good Job Mr. O'Malley.Buy and read this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Salary.com CEO loves this book

In general, this book provides information of how salary schedules and bonuses are determined. In addition, it describes a rather complicated, subjective process of how to determine what your salary should be, but later states that you cannot walk into your bosses office with this information and ask for a raise. There is some information, albeit very brief, of how to prepare for a job performance review and how to ask for a signing bonus with a potential future company, but most of it is common sense.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars not very much help
Although this book had a bit of useful information, I did not appreciate the MULTIPLE vague references to "magic dust" and the author's personal stories.I also did not appreciate the many suggestions as to how to appear sexy, or to attract a mate.I am a married, working mother, and would NOT sleep in my husband's previously worn dress shirts as pajamas as she suggests.(My kids would look at me funny.)5-0 out of 5 stars Read if you want to look FANTASTIC instead of looking good!!
I must say, I can't understand any of the negative reviews. This book is so vital to looking your very, very best.I have read it 2 or 3 times now and I use the tips/principles outlined in the book to go shopping.2-0 out of 5 stars A book about color & clothing, with no color or illustration
First off, I'm not a career counselor, wardrobe stylist or even an artist. I tend to just throw stuff on in the morning for work (fortunately I have a job that doesn't require a "corporate suit" look). I ended up picking up this book mostly because there were some handy tips -- things like what length skirt goes with what type of shoes, etc. that I thought I could use.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Economics As If People Mattered
I am a college instructor who teaches a sociology course of social stratification. This is a very unusual text in that it compares neo-classical economics to the political economy tradition by showing in very practical ways how each tradition gives different explanations of why there is economic inequality in wages, unemployment, and job distribution between whites, blacks and women. The text is easy to read and very evenhanded in how it treats both theories. There are excellent discussion questions at the end of each chapter and a rich bibliography. The book is relatively brief so it could either stand alone or be supplemented by another text. A very well put together text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am impressed by this book
Rarely we find a book like Andrew Ross's present a fair and balance view of US-China trade relationship. I think Andrew present China's side of arguement really well without demonizing the Chinese. Also, his analysis of US-China trade relationship is unusually sophisticated which is rare among American writers. Usually when it comes to issues regarding China, American authors do not try to understand where the Chinese stands. Not from Andrew Ross. Andrew understands the complexity of US-China relationship, instead of using the "we are right, the Chinese are moron" attitude.
1-0 out of 5 stars free trade is fair trade
The author obviously doesn't understand basic economics. He distinguishes between free trade, where the parties involved in cooperation find fairness, and fair trade, where elitists such as himself deem fairness for all. Of course, the only way elitists can dictate what they deem is to insert government intervention and take the "freedom" out of "free trade."
5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging account
Ross explores the origins, current state and possible directions of "outsourcing" focusing mostly on the Asian continent. The impact of the existing and emerging trends are presented without any political bias or apparent hidden agenda. That is perhaps most remarkably refreshing aspect of the book. A significant number of books on this topic are typically political and biased. For each "debatable" issue, Ross presents arguments from both sides and discusses them in the context of his personal interviews with workers. The chapter focusing on India-China relations and possibilities is perhaps the best written chapter in the book, and is the topic is treated in a fairly novel way.If you want an unbiased look on the impacts of outsourcing from a worker's perspective, this is a must-read.Ross uses a very simple, narrative style that makes the book engaging and easy-to-read. The book is pretty detailed and you can expect to spend some time reading it (a good thing!). The notes/citation section at the end of the book is comprehensive and useful for the more serious reader.A must read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Air Controllers' Controversy
As a new union member (1987) in the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) I read this book several times from cover to cover and always found something new.I also had a strong desire to learn about myroots. There are many lessons to be learned and this book is bothinformative and educational. It is obvious the authors spent a lot of timeresearching and putting together a great piece of work.Read more
