Editorial Review

Racial preferences are one of the most controversial issues in American public policy. Terry Eastland offers a compelling argument for dismantling them entirely. In this cogent analysis--better presented here than in several books holding similar views--Eastlandshows how bureaucratic and judicial rulings transformed the civil rights movement's noble ideal of equal opportunity for all individuals into the much more problematic goal of equal results for all groups. ... This is another in a growing wave of anti-affirmative action books. It is also one of the best.5-0 out of 5 stars The fatal flaw in Terry Eastland's book
The fatal flaw in Terry Eastland's book is his interpretation of Justice John Marshall Harlan's famous dissent in the case Plessy v. Ferguson. Indeed, this is the same flaw that can be found in the arguments many ofthe opponents of affirmative action.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Get The Edge and Make More Money
In Shut Up and Make More Money, Bill Radin provides a well needed reminder to remember the service side of the industry and get paid for remembering it. He provides simple ways to get the edge while maintaining and increasing both professionalism and revenue. Although technically, some of his ways are outdated, a good recruiter will find great resources within this book's pages. Because it's technically outdated, I wouldn't recommend this book for a brand new recruiter. I would, however, recommend it if you'd like to find a myriad of ways to get the immediate edge on your unwitting competition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Quite For Modern Recruiters
While much of this material would have been great for the late 80s and very early 90s, with todays phone butlers and very savvy gatekeepers, this book is absolutely no help. The strategies are simply out of date. Buying this book is a waste of money and reading it is a waste of time. I've noted one endorsement on Amazon from another author of books for recruiters. He must be a close friend of Radin and is probably looking for a reciprocal endorsement. Radin does have some great books out there - this isn't one of them. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Economic theory of work and gender
This book is an overview of how gender and race play into neo-classical economic theory. The authors discuss both macro- and micro-economic models, and how differences in gender and race can be explained using the models.Topics covered include: gender roles and economic development (in the US), division of labor within the family, allocation of time between the household and the labor market, consequences of women's employment for the family, differences in occupations and earnings, joblessness, and sex differences in other countries. The discussion is confined primarily to the US economy, although the theoretical aspects should be applicable elsewhere, and there is a brief section at the end of the book examining a few economic aspects of gender in developing countries, the U.S.S.R, and Sweden.Although the text generally focuses on gender differences, racial differences are also discussed with almost every topic. For the most part, the book examines only the economics of married heterosexual women, and women who are single or partners in same-sex unions fall outside the scope of the discussion.More in-depth explorations of theoretical issues are provided in appendices which follow several of the chapters. Each chapter includes a brief list of suggested readings.End material consists of an author index and a subject index.
4-0 out of 5 stars Gender Equity as Mainstream Economists See it
This book can be read at many levels -- used for a course or read as needed. You can answer questions like: How is unfair discrimination measured? Why do jobs that employ women pay less than those that employ meneven if the requirements are similar. Go beyond romantic love to answerquestions about whether marriage makes sense. Does welfare make peole workless? These two academics represent mainstream, what is called"institutional labor econmics."Anyone interested in the labormarket, gender equity, international comparisons on how women are doingwill find this book accessible. Editorial Review

Don Snyder had a plum academic job, a peaceful, almost perfect life, and plans for far more success in the future. Teaching English and creative writing at Colgate University couldn't have been more stimulating; he sought ever more work and thrived on student contact. When his contract was suddenly not renewed, Snyder was uncomprehending. Nonetheless, he responded immediately--thinking his efforts and accomplishments would pay off, as they always had in the past. Interestingly, he took some time before relaying the news to his pregnant wife, hoping that he could match the bad news with that of another appointment. After almost 100 rejection letters, Snyder found himself helping (not necessarily the word his fellow laborers probably used) to build a house in Maine, and worrying about being able to afford heavier boots. This book might have been preachy or self-indulgent. It is neither. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hits close to home
I just read this book while still mired in a job search going on three years. The emotional tailspin the author displays is heart-wrenching and familiar; the tone of the first 200 pages felt like reading my own journals. I did not identify with the author's deceptions and strange behaviors, however, such as lying to his wife or to an insurance company, or considering selling a new baby. But everyone has their own threshold for going haywire, and the point of this book is that Don Snyder got through it and learned something about life, work, and family.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finding strength in vulnerability
This is the ultimate victory story...with a twist.Unlike most autobiographical profiles, this one doesn't stand tall and tell you how great it is to be great. The thing is, it doesn't wrap itself up neatly either;the ending doesn't suddenly justify everything that has happened along the way. It's a formula all it's own, one that carries you up and down through the vulnerable channels this man had to endure.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
My husband and I both read this book a few years ago and agreed that it was one of the most profound memoirs we'd ever read.Snyder was born to write and we are blessed to have his thoughts recorded for posterity. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Marxists, Communists, Extreme Leftists-this book is for you
It was a great torture to plow through Braverman's Marxist diatribes. An example: "...the detailed division of labor subdivides humans, and while the subdivision of society may enhance the individual and the species, the subdivision of the individual, when carried on without regard to human capabilities and needs, is a crime against the person and against humanity."Wow.If you enjoyed that passage, this book may be for you.4-0 out of 5 stars Technological determinism
This book is the classic in the field of labor process. Marx put the labor process at the center of his masterpiece, The Capital. But since then, not much, if any, studies were done in Marxist schools. This book filled the temporal gap between Marx and the 20th century in the Marxist tradition. The author focused on the labor process under the Fordism. Braverman illustrates convincingly how the work, under the discipline of scientific management or Taylorism, becomes fragmented, dull, and repetitive tasks. The work is degraded. There has been not much objection to this argument. But when it comes to technology, things are different. His argument has too much smell of determinism. The theme of this book could put in this way: how the peculiar technological change in Fordism affected the feature of work and the differentiation of working class. No dispute. But his prophecy on technological change seems to go too far: every new technology just destroys our jobs and degrades the work. This kind of grim image has proliferated with the high-tech wave of the 1990s. Should we listen to such a forecast? I dont think so. 5-0 out of 5 stars Updating labor theory for the age of high technology
Labor and Monopoly Power, by Harry Braverman, brings basic Marxist labor theory up to date for the modern age.Though written 25 years ago, Braverman's work is the ideal guideline to understanding the age ofinformation technology.Braverman expertly explodes the smug myths of"knowledge age" boosters by drawing the parallels to earlierindustrial technology. The major misapprehension exploded is the one thatsays workplace automation demands higher skills and upgrades jobs. Braverman, through developing and applying the ideas not only of Marx, butof management proponents such as Babbage, Taylor and Bright, makes aconvincing case for the opposite.Computers, like other technology beforethem, are being applied in ways that expose two objectives:(1) thereduction of the absolute numbers of workers, and (2) the reduction ofskills among the remaining workers.Braverman's 1974 book was prophetic inthat it described longstanding capitalist relationships that, appliedvigorously since that time, have led to increasing income inequality inAmerica. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The First Comprehensive Telling of the Tale
Leon Stein had the advantage of speaking with some of the survivors, and he is an excellent conduit through which they tell their story. The strike is covered briefly, but Stein concentrates on the fire and its aftermath, including the gruesome task of identifying the bodies and the mournful series of funerals, culminating in the procession for the unknowns.Read this volume in tandem with David von Drehle's "Triangle:The Fire that Changed America," as they complement each other perfectly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Labor at a Crisis Moment
Leon Stein is a marvelous story-teller, who in THE TRIANGLE FIRE, shows incredible restraint. Given his pro-union, pro-labor background, you can almost hear him checking himself--holding back from screaming at an anti-labor era in America that caused so many needless deaths and injuries. Published on, roughly, the 50th anniversary of the disaster, Stein presents a story of young immigrant girls standing up against sweatshop atrocities, only to find themselves, in the case of the girls laboring at the Triangle Shirtwaist factory, pushed further down. The account of the disaster is appropriately harrowing.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for the student of disasters
Once I opened this book, I was hooked. The author's writing style grips you by the throat and drags you along with the survivors and the victims of this horrific yet history-making catastrophe! Every time you go into an office building and see a glowing exit sign, idly note that the doors have crash bars and open into the stairwell, or brush up against a fire extinguisher or hose cabinet, you'll remember why they're now mandated to be there. This disaster should never have happened, and this book explains why and how steps were taken to keep it from happening again. But it is also a book about people--those who made it out alive and those who didn't, and the little choices that made the difference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A most insightful analysis of the historical labor data.
This is a very short and easy to read book.Yet, it is very informative and insightful.I have read many books covering the same theme written by Peter Drucker, John Naisbitt, Robert Reich, and Lester Thurow among other visionaries and economists. This one is the best on the subject for two reasons. The two authors studied the historical data much more extensively than the others. Also, this book is more focused. The authors did not get sidetracked by many related economic and political issues.
3-0 out of 5 stars Academic, dry, and mildly digressive
I saw the authors of this book interviewed on the Newshour with Jim Lehrer and immediately ordered it.I found a book that made its central points within 2-3 chapters, but it continued to illustrate those points ad nauseum in subsequent chapters. The examples in the book of methods and challenges of teaching expert thinking and complex communications are too detailed, in that the depth reached in the examples does a disservice to the key points of the book.Ironically, this book could be even shorter than its 157 pages.
5-0 out of 5 stars Effortless Learning
A wonderful quick read, a painless injection of knowledge, letting those of us who never got beyond Econ 1-a understand the revolutionary impact of computers on American society. Not all a bed of roses -- we face the troublesome specter of our own version of Benjamin Disraelli's Victorian "two nations,"

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best books in social science
When academic writings in social science have largely become fastfood (i.e., you can finish a book in a few hours and then summarize it in 2-3 sentences), you can barely find a book that is both original and systematic to some substantial extent. Andrew Abbott's The System of Professions is an extraodinary exception. 5-0 out of 5 stars Something rare: a new idea
When I was thinking about writing the history of a professional society, I was urged to do some reading on professions. It was discouraging. The authorities had been going in circles for years, until Abbott came along and clarified the topic. His book was well-received; as I recall he was a visiting professor in New Jersey before it was published, and a full professor at Chicago soon afterwards. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written/some good insights
The poor, repetitious writing may be due to the fact that there was a "group effort" preparing and writing the book. There are a lot of good insights comparing the "old economy" labor force and the "new economy" labor force. The reader, however, must perservere to get through the repetition and disorganization. There are few short but interesting case studies in Chapter 3, and lots of left-wing policy recommendations throughout the book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars No Not again
Yet another waste of text. The same old vitim plight of the poor poor female in our modern society.I need a tissue!this book would have gotten a better review if I had read it in the 1960's.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Women in Criminal Justice
Van Wormer and Bartollas' book provides a very broad discussion of all facets of women in the criminal justice system, such as rape, spouse abuse, women in prison, women in law enforcement, and women in the legalprofession.Because of its broad range of information, it provides astrong book for courses in criminal justice programs involving women.Italso provides a strong reader for lay persons who are just interested inknowing the issues involving women and the criminal justice system. In theCollege of Social Work at Ohio State University, I teach a course entitledsocial work practice in corrections and would adopt this book as a secondbook for my course to provide students with broad perspective of womenissues in criminal justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars a valuable and rare resource
Although laid out like a textbook(numerous summary statements and bullet points) and encompassing an enormous amount of literature, the writing is crisp and interesting, liberally sprinkled with quotes, originalinterviews, vignettes and illustrative sidebars. The chapters fall into thebasic categories of women as imprisoned perpetrators, women as victims ofcrimes, and the place of women in the law enforcement system. The book is ajoint effort from a social work professor and a sociology/criminal justiceprofessor. THis resulted in a fruitful interplay between the objective andsubjective voice in the presentation of this material. The subject isexplicitly approached from an empowerment perspective, which focuses ongiving people the information they need to navigate the issues mosteffectively for helping themselves and others. The assumption is that issuesof gender, social class and racial oppression enter into all aspects of thesubject. This is a valuable and rare resource in this area of human concern.
