5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for me, my boss and his boss...OK my entire company!
Chuck Coonradt's principles in this book are over 33 years old, they haven't changed, and are just as applicable today. This is just one point of credibility for The Game of Work and the training program to help workers, managers, and their companies significantly increase fun, productivity, reward, profits and reduce loss.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not as funny as Dilbert because it's serious
Ten years ago, I worked for a company which was in the midst of a culture crisis. Part of this crisis was due to the owner's insistence on managing from afar and not allowing skilled managers to make decisions based on local needs. This crisis came to a head when the owner met the author of this book on a ski - lift.

3-0 out of 5 stars self-promotion
If it didn't say "Harvey Mackay" on the cover, we wouldn't even mention this book, but ol' Swim with the Sharks Harvey is a brand unto himself. Pushing the Envelope is pure Mackay: breezy style, predictable advice, management insights as deep as a puddle. Still, expect it to sell. Mackay, like Zig Ziglar, can move books on name recognition alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting for both union insiders and non-unionists
This is another labor community insider book directed toward labor union leaders and their strategists and written by the same. The motivation is the reversal of the sagging fortunes of labor unions. Many of thearticles focus on the need for grassroots activity by existing unionmembers and community supporters. Several union campaigns utilizing membersare examined in detail. Union support organizations such as the GarmentWomen Justice Center are described. Serveral articles examine subtleties ofthe motivations of non-unionists to vote for a union. An interestingobservation is that white collar and technical workers are turned off bythe potential for conflict when joining a union, which is interesting inlight of the fact that unions have always relied on confrontation as theirtool of last resort. The main point of the editors is that uniontactics and actions make a large difference in organizing success. Thesecond point is that unions must remake themselves into organizing bodiesand avail themselves of the wisdom contained in these articles. But fornon-union insiders reading this book, many chinks appear when looking atthe articles in totality. For example, one article shows that belonging totwo community organiztions lowers the desire to join a union, yet manyarticles tout labor-community coalitions. In one case where communityconnections were leveraged to the fullest to win a union contract, it isadmitted that may have been a one-time occurrence. A large andconfusing point that leaps out from these articles is, just what is aunion. Is it a centralized business that collects fees from subsidiaries, demands adherence to policies from the CEO, and provides services? Or is aunion a legally recognized association of workers at a locale thataffiliates with a national body but retains sovereignty? Statements thatworkers "are" the union hide more than they reveal. If workersare the union, can they insist that national unions remain committed to aservicing model? If workers are the union, how can some national unionsliterally require local unions to focus on recruitment? Claiming thatworkers are the union can be a demotivator for joining a union. After all,it is workers who have unsuccessfully dealt with employers on their ownthat want to join unions; now they want support, not abandonment. Theeditors and authors may complain that this book is not about "what isa union," but is only about subtle strategy. If so, they need to put a"Nonunionists need not read" label on the cover. Actually thebook is worth reading by all interested in the situation of labor not onlyon its educational merits but also for the questions that it can engenderfor non-insiders. Who knows, maybe their next book can be "What is aUnion." ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Traumatized--at work!
Sorry...I just can't buy into Hare/Wyatt theory/conclusions that many, as shorn lost lambs to slaughter seem to have done.
1-0 out of 5 stars Former work abused; Hare abused!!!
I read this book. I cannot put any stock into anything Hare writes or says is true. He admittedly lied about at least one of his case studies -- his reason was because his readers [publishers {$$$$}] wouldn't have believed the real version. Read something that really deals with abuse (including work abuse); read Judith Herman's "Trauma & Recovery" instead of this lame rhetoric.
5-0 out of 5 stars Work Abuse Hidden better than spousal and/or child abuse
I am reading, for the second time, WORK ABUSE - HOW TO RECOGNIZE AND SURVIVE IT by Judith Wyatt and Chauncey Hare. Work abuse is a very unpopular subject and is at least equally as widespread as is spousal abuse and/or child abuse. It is the best hidden of any abuse inflicted by one person upon another. Work abuse replicates child abuse in that the abused is scapegoated, trapped and alone without help from either inside or outside the system. Work stress is simply a euphemism for "work abuse," that hampers job quality and production as well as cripples, disables, and destroys the quality of life for millions every day and has been rampant in our society for many years.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts from Down the Road...
OK, it has been a while now since this book came out, and sinde i read it cover to cover. (in the interests of fulkl disclosure, i am in the book. But if you begin this book, you to will be compelled to keep reading!Honest!)4-0 out of 5 stars A flawed but very valuable work.
Steven Keeva (who is not a lawyer but has spent many years observing and writing about them) here provides an assortment of advice, tips, and real-life examples to help you become a better lawyer and a better person. While I found much of the book to be old news, every 10 pages or so Keeva says something eye-opening, memorable, and truly instructive. The chapters on listening and service were, for me, the real pay-off, and I know I will be going back to them frequently.By contrast, his portrayal of litigators, trials, and especially corporate practice struck me as simplistic and a bit stereotyped. In addition, those who are unreceptive to the touchy-feely approach to problem-solving should be warned that this book is nothing if not touchy-feely.That said -- and notwithstanding my other qualifications -- this book is an *important* contribution to the literature of professionalism and lawyers' "mental hygiene" (as Prof. Stone of Harvard has called it).Since this book is also a quick read, every lawyer and law student who even suspects it may be helpful should give it a try and then keep it close at hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Staying in the practice, and enjoying it!
Transforming Practices truly is a gift to lawyers, like me, who have been practicing for many years and want to continue practicing law in a satisfying and meaningful way. This book has been one of my best investments, and I keep it on my desk at work.Reading, or in my case rereading, Steven Keeva's inspirational words provides a much needed boost in spirit, and a new way of looking at the legal life, even on a difficult day!My colleagues who have read this book wholeheartedly agree! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Good book, but there many well known questions and answers, i was looking for something more detailed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Resource for Novice or Expert Interviewer
Taking a different approach to finding the perfect employees, this book is a fun resource for even the most experienced interviewer or job seeker. Dianna Podmoroff is an experienced author of similar books, and does not disappoint with this one. Each chapter deals with a specific job related skill; such as assessing analytical and problem solving ability, interpersonal skills and conflict resolution, teamwork, leadership, motivation, and stress management. What makes this book different is the expert analysis of answers after each section of questions. Podmoroff quickly pinpoints the pro's and con's of various responses, but is thankfully not presumptuous enough to claim there is ever one correct answer. She carefully illustrates how to apply different responses to appropriate job descriptions, allowing the interviewer to develop a more conscientious picture of each applicant. Interestingly enough, any job hunter can also use this book to hone individual interview skills, gaining valuable insight into the oft-confusing interviewing process. Overall, 501+ Great Interview Questions for Employers does what the name implies; offer great questions and expert analysis of answers, without the "know it all" attitude found in similar books. A valuable resource for even the most seasoned interviewer or the novice job-hunter. And by the way, there are 696 questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who hire
"501+ Great Interview Questions For Employers And The Best Answers For Prospective Employees" is a great read for anyone in charge of hiring for a company.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly Inspirational Book - Read it!
If you have lost your job involuntarily, think you may be on the bubble or are just questioning your whole approach and understanding of the work-a-day world, you should read this book!I lost my job in August of 2002 after returning from a very successful 3-year assignment in London.I was devastated, how could I be treated this way.I thought if you showed up and did a great job, you were in for life.Boy was I wrong!I came across this book recommended by an author of a paperback called The Lay-Off Survival Guide.5-0 out of 5 stars Building Personal Resilience
Ms. Pulley has written a very useful treatise on resilience in the context of the workplace. She very succintly brings out the feelings and emotions that a person who has lost his/her job involuntarily feels and experiences. Her ideas and thoughts based on her interviews with people who have gone through the "trough" would make an invaluable contribution to those who are on their path to recovery and more importantly success on their terms. Though the book is written based on the American experience, I am of the opinion that it is applicable anywhere in the world. For those who live under the threat of likely loss of their job involuntarily, this book would be useful in understanding the feelings that you may be encountering. This book could even be a road-map to move-on and re-define yourself, discover a new dimension of success and of course, get on with re-building and living a more meaningful life in which you will find satisfaction and happiness in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding self-help book for career transitions

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent College Resource on "Outsourcing Jobs"
I used this book as a resource for a paper I did on outsourcing.I found this book to be very informative and well formatted. The chapters have a logical flow and uncover many things about the short-term and long-term affects in this country as well as the countries the jobs are being outsourced to.

3-0 out of 5 stars An anti-globalization book, rather than an anti-outsourcing book
I am currently reading this book. What the authors are trying to say is simple, don't outsource. They have tried their best to write a book of 200+ pages - with a vague story-line and lot of repetitions. The story-line of the book could have been better and they could have tried to avoid the repititions.
3-0 out of 5 stars The theory of comparative advantage does not support absolute advantage(globalization)
Hira and Hira(HH) have written a book that they state is aimed at the average American.HH appear to have decided that the basics of the theory of comparative advantage,at the level of Adam Smith and David Ricardo, are too difficult for the average American reader to grasp. Therefore, they decided to skip an explicit account of exactly what it was that Smith(or Ricardo)actually said. This is the major shortcoming of the book.Smith would completely reject any globalization argument for outsourcing because such an argument rests on absolute advantage and not comparative(relative)advantage.Absolute advantage violates the necessary condition that the outcomes from trading be Pareto optimal(some countries gain more than others gain from trade but no one loses)since some countries lose.Under absolute advantage you have a zero sum game.Let's look at what HH should have covered from The Wealth of Nations(1776,Book IV,Chapter II,pp.420-440,Modern Library edition),but did not,in their book."First, every individual endeavors to employ his capital as near home as he can,and consequently as much as he can in the support of domestic industry;provided always that he can thereby obtain the ordinary,or not a great deal less than the ordinary profits of stock"(Smith,p.421;see also p.422-423).Assume that the returns are far less than ordinary. The individual should relocate his business in the foreign country so that he can sell the output he produces to his FOREIGN CUSTOMERS.Importation of these goods back into the home market for sale violates the theory of comparative advantage , since the relocated firm now has absolute advantage. For instance,Toyota and Volkswagen build plants in America to supply Americans with cars. They do not send their products back to Japan and Germany for sale in their home market,a la WalMart.Second,a retaliatory tariff is "...good policy...when there is a probability that they will procure the repeal of the high duties or prohibitions..."imposed by another country.Only when"there is no probability that any such repeal can beprocured..."would a retaliatory tariff be a" bad method"(Smith,p.435).Third,"...freedom of trade(free importation of foreign goods) should be restored only by slow gradations, and with a good deal of reserve and circumspection"(p.435).Fourth, "To expect...that the freedom of trade should ever be entirely restored... is as absurd as to expect that an ...Utopia should ever be established..." because "...the private interests of many individuals irresistibly oppose it".Fifth,Smith fully supports revenue tariffs to fund government(Smith,p.439;see pp.845-850 for some of the negative consequences.Smith imposed such duties when he became a Customs official.Theeconomic policies of George Washington and Alexander Hamilton were built on Tariffs)operations such as providing universal general and religious education(Smith,pp.767-768).HH present a list of the negatives resulting from the rush to implement a "globalization" policy that has not been done in slow gradations with a great deal of circumspection and reserve.Smith would be appalled to discover economists claiming that globalization is based on the theory of comparative advantage or that such a theory has anything to do with The Wealth of Nations.HH should revise their book to explicitly cover what Smith,a moral and ethical conservative, actually said and not what some libertarian anarchist economist claims he said. ...
