5-0 out of 5 stars Clears away the hype on the new economy
This book provides the clearest analysis of work in the new economy of anything I've read, using Silicon Valley as the prototypical region of the future of work.It cuts through all the hype, and analyzes both the region's dynamism, but also the reasons behind the volatility, insecurity, and rise in contract/temporary employment. It provides innovative and useful suggestions for ways of increasing security for workers in the region's labor market, while maintaining the region's dynamism.Should be read by every elected official and policy maker in the country, and anyone else concerned about the changing nature of work in the new economy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Overview
The title says it all--this is a good basic overview of payroll. You will not become an expert by reading it, but what can you read that makes you an expert? This book will give you the vocabulary and the tools you need to take your first steps in payroll. After that experience is the best teacher.

3-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Payroll Resource
I think this is a good beginner-to-intermediate level book about payroll. While I doubt this book can serve as your only source to setting up a payroll system (a claim never made by the author), it can serve as a valuable guide to implementing or reviewing your current payroll internal controls, best practices and payroll policy manual. It may also help you analyze whether you are paying too much money or spending too much time on your job costing system. If you like examples, the author uses many short case studies to clarify his main points.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended !
Some years ago, during the height of the technology stock bubble, a book entitled "Free Agent Nation" made quite a splash by glorifying the phenomenon of independent contracting. Less famously and far less optimistically, a number of economists and anthropologists pointed to this trend as a grave sign of the decay of workers' position in American society. Stephen R. Barley and Gideon Kunda, the authors of this study, steer a careful, meticulously documented middle course. They examined the observable fact of independent contracting in the high technology industry from three viewpoints: the contractors, the headhunters and the client firms. They say that the contractor is a new, different kind of knowledge worker with a unique set of opportunities and constraints. The book is clearly written, based on apparently sound evidence and illustrated with carefully chosen anecdotes. Wesuggest that its primary appeal will be to academics and other students of labor market trends, but also recommend it to firms that hire contractors and to contractors themselves - both will benefit from the authors' analysis of their market.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Apprentice" starring Dilbert, produced by Margaret Mead
Ah the sweet life of a contract programmer... the big bucks, the independence, the freedom from corporate politics! Barley and Kunda are brilliant anthropologists who take you inside the reality of the contractor's life. You hear their stories, learn their secrets, and smell their nervous sweat. The authors' style is captured nicely by the title of the book. They're irreverent and on-target. They allow you to spy with them--mixing voyeur appeal with hard science. Imagine an episode of "The Apprentice" starring characters pulled from Dilbert, and produced by Margaret Mead. I laughed out loud and took notes. If you work with contractors, if you live with a contractor, if you hire contractors, and for sure if you are a contractor, you must get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "true" colour of healthcare...
Although this book is based in the U.S., so much is the same in Canada. I would highly recommend this book for nurses [who may be trying to figure out 'what it's all about Alfie'], for nursing students and no doubt, the public - so they can gain a better understanding of what it is that nurses are up against. As one wise person put it - it's a pity that these corporate entities in charge of running our healthcare, know the cost of everything...yet the value of nothing ("The Peter Principle")! So much needless suffering all for a race to the "bottom-line"/dollar. Thank you for such an intelligent book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The 2010 Meltdown
Although the 2010 Meltdown warns of impending problems caused by baby boomer retirement and a lack of people to fill technology-related jobs, it also provides helpful solutions. The bad news is that our leaders are incapable or unwilling to help us on a national level. The good news is that powerful solutions can be found at the local level, where they will be most effective. The 2010 Meltdown demonstrates how training and education at the community level is the answer to problems we face and it outlines a plan communities can follow to effect this change. The book is a must-read for community and business leaders alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars A REALISTIC AND OPTIMISTIC VIEW OF THE DEMAND FOR/SUPPLY OF TALENT.
The global.economy faces a paradox: too many people untrained or trained for the wrong jobs simultaneous with a increasing lack of people to fill the jobs that support the world's leading high-tech economies. The author explains how this crisis has developed but looks beyond it to innovative initiatives being taken in the U.S. and other nations in education, training, and community development to meet the challenge. This is a big-picture book that connects many economic, demographic, and technological dots. The book is loaded with facts and insights, and provides a balanced and optimistic picture of economic realities.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Baby Boomer Hangover
Ed Gordon has accurately predicted a catastrophe that will soon strike America, as well as the rest of the world. The huge influx of baby boomers into the workforce helped many countries shoot their economies forward, but now the following generations are millions less than the boomers.

3-0 out of 5 stars For ContingencyRecruiters only
Not a bad academic study of the contingency recruiter world. It lays out the basic recruiting process for the low to mid level staffing world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best comprehensive headhunting book for headhunters
I have been working in this field for 25 years, and read most of the major books. Although I am a big fan of Bill Radin, this
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of how headhunters work, but in mind 90's
As a novice in the recruiting/headhunting industry doing research for a business plan, I found this book to be very informative. It has input from a lot of real time headhunters, so you get to understand how they work on an industry level and on a day to day basis. However, in spite of vast research the authors have put into this book, most of the research was carried out in mid nineties (although the book was published in 2002) so the word "internet" comes up only twice (or a few times) in the book. One gets an impression that the resume/candidate database is one of the most important assets for a headhunter, but I wonder to what extent that is relevant given that a few resume databases such as monster, careerbuilder, hotjobs (some of these sites are mentioned only once or not at all) will give anyone access to a greater number of resumes' than someone who has been in this business for a long time and relies on the resume's in their own database.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Time:The ULTIMATE commodity
For years I've thought of Europe as like the grandfather... sitting on the porch, watching America in action. He sits there, somewhat envious, reminiscing about the days when he used to be the top dog himself. But the envy is shortlived; in truth, he would never trade places with us, for he knows that the true cost of being able to call yourself #1 is far too high.
5-0 out of 5 stars Live deeper, not faster
It's the 900 pound gorilla in America that everyone should be talking about: time poverty. Most folks accept it as unavoidable; that's just the way life is.Work, work, work.Busy, busy, busy.Bulloney, says this book.I'm not doing too bad but I see the trappings of modern existence creeping into my life and I'm inspired to keep them in check. This book is particularly strong because it draws on the opinions of many progressive thinkers, rather that just one lone voice in the wilderness.Stop buying stuff, invest time in your family and community and civic society.Live deeper.I'm working on it. Are you?

4-0 out of 5 stars Must read for any asian..
Its a nice read contrasting cultural background and biases of different asians, and how that hinders progress in corporate america. Must read for any asian. Few things I already knew having worked for sometime. But its a good review material when you take a step back and rethink the way you operate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Important Book for All Asians--Even the Very Americanized
There's a term for Asians like me.I'm what you call a banana--someone who is clearly Asian by appearance but identifies little as one due to a very American upbringing. So, I was at first skeptical when I picked up this book dedicated to helping Asians navigate and succeed in a corporate environment. After reading the book, however, I discovered a lot of useful material, and I am certain that this book would be even more helpful for someone who is yellow both inside and out.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Ladder Lift for Asian Professionals
As the first book of this kind, this book has done an excellent job in provoking thinking and providing valuable career advice for business professionals with Asian ethnic background.

1-0 out of 5 stars thick clotted prose
This book is comprised of the kind of writing Sockel calls "thick clotted prose". After decades of reading the clear, unadorned, precise and excellent English of The Economist, I have become intolerant of pretentious layered jargon. What, for example, does this sentence say, which could not be said in simple words: "The organization's objectives, responses, and business models should be calibrated on the basis of its capabilities." Perhaps it could have been: "Organizations should do things they are good at." If this thick clotted prose had coagulated into high scholarship, I might have bothered to read on. Alas, that was not the case. The authors write, in a gesture alluding to scholarship: "Evidence shows that customers are demanding clearer information from their solution providers..." What evidence? It was not given, nor references to studies showing it. Read this book to find out how not to write.
