5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all birth professionals!
It's clear that the book is writen for professionals because of the jargon, and in my opinion every professional should read it! I am on my way to become a doula and unfortunately this book is not on the required reading list, I think it should be. It is an important tool for when labor doesn't progress 'as it should', and offers options and ideas to try before the drugs and machines are introduced to speed up labor are introduced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the patient, too
Having labored with three babies who presented posterior and caused long hard labors, I have looked for information after each one. After the second baby delivered posterior, and I became pregnant with my third, I came across this book. Reading it two or three times before my delivery, I had it almost memorized and used a lot of the suggestions from it. The third delivery (thanks to help from this book and my doctor) we were able to turn the baby. I can't credit the book entirely since my doctor had to manually turn the baby's head, but I do think the positioning and activities the book suggested were half the victory. I wish all birth professionals would read and reread the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Doulas
This book should be on the recommended reading list for all doula training programs! In a clear, concise, and thoughtful way, Penny explains what makes labor progress, how to recognize labor progress, and how to help with labor progress. My copy is always in my birth bag.I have used it at several births for various reasons, and have always found it to be helpful, with reminders or even just to reaffirm that I've done everything possible.I recommend this book for anyone in the childbirth field and for expectant couples as well! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ~How~ people contribute to performance ... MBA must-read!
The term "human capital management" has stepped into the long line of buzzwords that attempt to leverage people into increased organizational performance. Play to Your Strengths takes a step beyond the rhetoric to actually explore "how" to accomplish this. From their 3 critical questions -- led by "what are we spending on human capital (cost) and what is it buying us(value)?" -- to their six-factor framework defining human capital, the authors give insight into how organizations should measure the contribution of people to a company's bottom line. They also provide real company examples and perspectives from investors, CEOs, and managers.4-0 out of 5 stars Science, art, or a new lable for an old management tool?
Whenever guru-accented statements like "leveraging human capital to produce results" I feel a quiver, not of excitement, but of caution. However, management trainees and schools like label-accented seminars and books, so this title, Play to Your Strengths, isn't anything that will offend anyone. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans have written a useful book for employees who are tempted by greener pastures. The authors caution that those who pursue a glittering opportunity often wind up in a golden mess. Thus, it makes sense to at least try to improve your job before seeking another one that, ultimately, may be even worse. The book's format offers one item of advice for each letter of the alphabet. At times, the formula wears a bit thin (X for "X-ers and Other Generations"), but the advice itself is sound. It primarily consists of encouraging you to decide what you want and go get it. We recommend this book to currently employed malcontents (you know who you are!) and to those who need help mustering the nerve to discuss job satisfaction with their employers. Perhaps the best piece of advice is to only approach your supervisors for a favor when you understand their WIIFT: "What's In It For Them."

5-0 out of 5 stars Think of this book as a compilation of your own notes
Think of this book as a compilation of your own notes to improve your own career. It is written exactly the way I'd organize my own thoughts and plans in a serious way to plan and grow my own career. Very practical and concise tips and easy to read. Takes few minutes to read each topic. The theme of 26 Topics for 26 alphabets is also nice.Finish it quickly and then use from time to time as a reminder to set priorities in your day to day life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Left It, Didn't Love It
Given the rave reviews for this book, I was surprised by the lack of content and value. The book's message is a truism: only you are responsible for your own happiness. It goes on to encourage you to ask for what you want. These aren't bad assertions but they're more complicated to implement than this book would have you believe. The content is structured like an article in a woman's magazine: it uses a bulletized format with basic questions to ask yourself like "What do you enjoy" followed by inane suggestions like "Decorate your office". Cloying and without substance, this book fails to answer many core questions. What if your boss declines your request? What motivates an organization? How do you make lateral moves? Where are the examples of individuals who reengineered their work situation and how exactly they did it ? Granted, too many employees don't understand the work relationship or how to work an organization. But this is not the book that will address those issues. If you're still determined to read this book, my copy is up for sale on Amazon's used site. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Reading
My teacher assigned this book for my Labor Relations course and I wish he picked out a better book. The definitions are awful and you have to read them like 3 times until you fully understand what information the book is trying to provide. There was one part that really made me think that this book was thrown together in a couple of minutes. One sentence in this book stated that, "Southwest airlines was not unionized." My aviation management teacher saw something wrong with this statement because Southwest is heavily unionized. I think the author had a particular issue in his life and was trying to smurf it off in his book. This book is definately not for beginning students, unless you have time to decifer what the author is trying to say..... I could talk more about how terrible this book is, but I think you get the point
1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst textbooks around
Normally I don't have problems reading the texts schools use but this one is the worst book I've ever had to read. My instructor provided outlines of each chapter that were provided by the author. Without those I would not have been able to make heads or tails of this book. The author needs to ake this book less dry and more learning friendly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dry Reading
Sometimes books can't help but to cover dry material. This book does not excell past being extremely dry.The book is well documented, thorough, and comprehensive. The eight edition is aesthically pleasing, but still does not seem to achieve the ability to make itself an easy read.I would highly recommend another book for this study, or using this one as background information for study. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars media wants to burn this and suppress it
Is awesome to see ideas outside the mainstream. Most people today like monarchy.Kings are obsolete.Let people do as they please and the inefficiency will be squirted free like bad zits.Rmoving the rules that govern is privatization.Privatizing education alone would lead to much smarter people.Let all the rules that restrain people from creating good go away.Watch life improve.think different.Think freedom of action from the rules of the king.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome book anti-rules--media will want to burn it
Being a real rebel is thinking different.Thats what this author does.Get rid of rules of the goverment.Let private owners decide. These ways of releasing people lead to hugely improved results.Awesome read.Media will want to burn this book.It explodes all collectivist works.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pro-Privatization
I will begin by stating that I have a major problem with the book.Savasskews his own statistics in order to push readers into supporting theprivatization of our nation's public sector. His book focuses entirely onthe private sector's greater efficiency over the public sector withoutaddressing many other important issues. If you want a very one sided bookthat is pro-privatization, then buy this one.If, however, you would likea book that seeks to enlighten readers with facts and allows them to maketheir own decision on the matter, then find another book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Guide Has it All
This is a completele kit for making your company's own employee handbook. There is legal information, state specific information, resources to follow for your specific needs, and then, the best part of all, there is CD that comes with this that has everything you need already typed for you. All you have to do is insert the CD and save the files, which are in MS Word, and voila - you have it. The only thing you have to do is decide which policies you want for your company, fill in a few blanks, change the TOC and you are ready to print it out! A very practical and easy way to create your own employee handbook! I was quite impressed.

4-0 out of 5 stars REMEMBER THE HAYMARKET MARTYRS
THIS REVIEW IS BASED ON A REMEMBERANCE OF THE HAYMARKET MARTYRS ON MAY DAY, 2006. PROFESSOR GREEN'S BOOK, WELL RESEARCHED AND INFORMATIVE ABOUT THE WHOLE CHICAGE POLITICAL ATMOSPHERE AND THE LABOR MOVEMENT IN THE MIDWEST IN THOSE DAYS OF THE 'ROBBER BARONS', IS A WELCOME ADDITION TO THE LITERATURE OF THIS PERIOD. ONE NOTE, AS MENTIONED BELOW THIS REVIEWER IS DISTANCE POLITICALLY FROM ANARCHISM. HOWEVER, HISTORICALLY ANARCHISM IS PART OF THE WORKING CLASS MOVMENT, NOT OUTSIDE IT AS SOME IN THE LABOR MOVEMENT TODAY WHO HAVE REVIEWED THIS BOOK WOULD HAVE US BELIEVE. THAT SAID, READ THIS BOOK.
5-0 out of 5 stars Important Topic fro Then and Now
As a Chicago ex-pat who loves every aspect of the great city's history I was pleased with this book. It takes a potentially dry subject, labor and social history, and weaves it into a compelling series of stories with Chicago as the backdrop. It may now seems surprising that people died over trying to get an 8 hour day into law but this is there and much more. The lives of the martyrs Parsons, Spies and the others jump out in a well documented and well written tale. The history of the organized labor movement was centered in Chicago.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best work of American Labor History ever.
I've read a lot of American labor history.David Montgomery, Nelson Lichtenstein, Stanley Aronowitz, Melvyn Dubofsky, Robert Zieger and many others.Yet I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that this is the best work I've read on the subject. This book by James Green is great narrative history about maybe the most important event in the history of the U.S. working class. The characters are well drawn, the context is laid out nicely and the analysis is first rate.It is a sophisticated study without resorting to academic jargon.I normally don't write many reviews, but I had to when I saw that only two had been written so far.I really doubt that a better work of American history will be written this year.James Green is definitely a historian to watch. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on a Pervasive Problem
Christina Maslach is well-known in psychology as the person who has championed the problem of burnout over more than two decades. For quite a time she was something of a lone voice.
5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VALIDATING
tretise on what most of us already know about bureauracracies.I've not finished reading the "what to do about it." yet, but already know my first questions when contemplating a new job will be "How many people were fired or quit in the past 6-9 months?"

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
Christina Maslach and Michael P. Leiter's groundbreaking book debunks myths about burnout and holds organizations accountable for this epidemic, which has swept the work world. The authors detail how organizations can treat and prevent burnout, and take a critical look at its deep-rooted causes, including lack of engagement and conflict between employees' values and their jobs. Conversationally and with great impact, the authors support their points and suggestions. We recommend this book to executives, managers and employees. Now go home and get some rest. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars David vs. Goliath
Gordon Lafer shows us clearly the etiology of the federally-funded job training programs such as JTPA and today WIA.He shows us clearly why these programs are political responses and not actually based in "the truth" of unemployment at all. There are too few jobs available to help poor people with a band-aid approach.Although he does not come out and say it, Lafer's implication is that the CETA program, public funding of jobs, was more to the point for poor people. The government then acts as the employer of last resort. He probably feels, and I agree, that it will come to that again soon, because corporate America is out to make a profit, not help the workers, and unions?Well, they're shrinking and losing even the little say-so they did have, witness the grocery strike right now in Southern California. So, eventually, probably sooner than later, there will be many idle people lingering and you know what the devil does with idle lingering people. The only redeeming element of politics that we can find in Lafer's scathing analysis of Ronald Reagan and his ilk, is that what goes around comes around.Politics goes in cycles.CETA had its day, just as the New Deal did, and the War on Poverty. Now we're in the thick of a backlash period, but it can't last. That is, if it does last, it won't be the same old U.S. anymore, will it?More like Unbrave New World?Diximus.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an outstanding book
Lafer's analysis is first rate. All the numbers are there, but what makes this book exceptional is the clear and accessible writing Lafer uses to present the material.Anyone who wants to know the politics and the economics behind job training efforts in the United States will LOVE this book. For anyone interested in the ever growing influence of corporate America into matters of national economic and educational policy, Lafer's _The Job Training Charade_ is essential reading.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Story That Could Have Told Itself and A Book That Wants To Tell it Over and Over and Over Again
David Von Drehle had it right, the Triangle Fire is one of the great American tragedies and a great story. But Drehle takes an almost scientific approach to a story about people. Padding out the book to make it novel length (The appendix is nearly 1/3 of the page length) he so often repeats himself and circles back on the same information, over and over and over again.Detail in such a tale is good, but Drehle is so caught up with just how many sewing machines are on each table he loses sight of WHY this story is so compelling. The actual story of the fire is retold no less than nine times from nine different perspectives. And any time the book advances Drehle yanks it back to circle back on itself. Drehle might be a good archivist but he's a poor novelist. Finally, he gets some of the key elements and people involved wrong.I grew up on tales of the Triangle fire as my great grandfather was one of the men who went up to the roof to escape the fire. It's probably not Drehle's fault, this is a book that should have been written 20 or 30 years ago when more of the survivors were alive to tell their tales. In any case. I DO NOT Recommend this book. It's a huge disappointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really well told story in a journalistic style
I enjoyed learning about this historical occurance.Pathos reigns and so much of why we have EPA and OCCEA today is traceable to here.A jood and informative read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written
Extremely well researched and written "Triangle" is the story of the 1911 fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factor that killed 146 workers, most of them young women. David von Drehle not only writes about the fire, but the events leading up to the fire, including a prolonged strike by garment workers in 1909. The conditions the workers had to deal with are also described as well as the incredibly long work week (100 hours) for low wages which the owners tried to make even lower whenever they could. Von Drehle describes in great detail the fire, the workers attempts to escape the fire and the efforts of people both inside and outside the factory that struggled to save the victims. He also describes the aftermath of the fire and covers the owner's trial and whether or not they were convicted on any charges. Finally, he includes the first complete list of the fire victims and how they died.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
The package came overseas to Japan in less time than expected. Great service!I was so excited to get the package of books before I had to leave for a business trip for a week. (If the books had come "on time," then I would have already left.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good!!
Here we have a collection of several articles about balancing work and life. I liked the book because of that. You don't have to begin reading on page 1. Just see the index for an article of choice an begin reading there. The ideas the authors propose are written in an easy reading manner an are always backed on serious researches. I licked it a lot. ... Read more
