3-0 out of 5 stars Full of great information but can be wordy
I enjoyed this book for the most part.It had great information and opened my eyes to areas I had not realized before. However, I noticed that in between interesting pieces of information there were alot of unnecessary words...like the author wanted to make the book longer.I found myself saying "didn't she just make this point but the wording is different this time."I gave it 3 stars because I think it should be read but I think there is alot of skimming you could do between paragraphs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Globalization and Transnationalism in Anthropological light
High Tech and High Heels in the Global Economy is an ethnography of globalization positioned at the intersection between political economy and cultural studies.Carla Freemans's fieldwork in Barbados grounds the process of transnational capitalism - production, consumption, and the crafting of modern identities in the lives of Afro-Carribean women working in a new high tech industry called "informatics".It places gender at the center of transnational analysis and local Caribbean culture and history at the center of global studies.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps you understand how to win
Gregory's book is very helpful in understanding what factors can win an age discrimination action. His clear and concise case studies are used to illustrate the main legal points and how the courts have changed over recent years in their requirements for success. It has in several ways become more difficult to win age discrimination cases and Gregory explains how and why very clearly.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource to help you decide....

There is very little written on the subject of age discrimination in employment that ventures to explain the whole process for the Plaintiff. This author is very credible to me both in providing behavior insights and process descriptions. It raises my confidence that older workers can gain a good understanding of the steps they need to take when they face the problem of age bias in employment. ... Editorial Review

This book is a chilling account of the successful $176 million class-action racial discrimination suit brought against the Texaco corporation by Bari-Ellen Roberts and her 1,400 fellow African American colleagues. 4-0 out of 5 stars One Admirable Woman's Story; One Company's Shame
I regret that this story is written "with Jack E. White" and not told by Roberts herself. The value of this book is primarily as a personal memoir. As told by White, it is a rather superficial, though intimate, personal outline of Roberts' life--the difficult time she had growing up, her ill-fated marriage, her strength and ambition in the face of adversity.I came away from the book admiring Roberts for her courage and determination, and appalled at Texaco's corporate culture, its hierarchy and unforgiveable prejudice. Were it not for anti-discrimination law, Texaco's sins would have remained hidden and unrectified.Until further notice, I'll certainly be buying my gasoline anywhere else!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful account of race and corporate America
I enjoyed this book tremendously. It was a little slow toward the end, but overall it was very well-written.It's a shame that this type of blatant racism still exists today, not that I'm surprised, but it's truly a shame. It took a lot of courage and stamina on Roberts' part to force Texaco to acknowlegde their archaeic and ignorant business practices relative to race.I applaud Bari Ellen Roberts even when there are those who still believe in Texaco's innocence...much like the reviewer who chooses to perpetuate one of America's largest problems...the belief that other races are inferior and should bow down to this almighty, superior race."Forgive him, for he knows not what he does."I enjoyed reading about her life and what she went through that made her into what she is today. This is definitely a book worth reading for all.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opening View of Overcoming Corporate Racism
Roberts vs. Texaco,a true story of race and corporate America, started a little slow, depicting Bari-Ellen Roberts' life since childhood. At first, I didn't know why it went into such detail, but as I read along, I understood how all of the pieces in her life connected to the storyline.Read more

I think Joan Fitzgerald's book is great and particularly timely. The headlines are legitimately full of the disasters in our economylinked to the new pressures of global competition.Rather than complain or oppose (certainly required--but alone--insufficient), Joan patiently and thoroughly describes the details of an approach that must be the foundation for US education policy at the federal, state and local level. It's a work in progress and Joan provides great information on the ideas, the case studies, and the practitioners. In Chicago and in Illinois, there is a new opennessby top leaders in business, government, and labor to new approaches.I'm encouraging them to read Joan's book now. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Reveals the power of song to promote ideas and ideals
Labor's Troubadour is an exceptionally well written and presented autobiography of a man who has spend more than fifty years using the power of music to fight for union representations in mills, mines, factories, and offices all over the country. Glazer tells of sharing platforms with significant political figures including Harry Truman, Eleanor Roosevelt, Hubert Humphrey, Adlai Stevenson, George McGovern, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon and Ladybird Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and bill Clinton. He describes his often comedic meetings with Jacqueline Kennedy, Rudolf Serkin, and other celebrities. Here also is the story of his encounters with labor icons Walter Reuther, George Meany, Cesar Chavez and others. Labor's Troubadour reveals the power of song to promote ideas and ideals and is a strongly recommended autobiography for students of the American labor movement in general, and one of its most talented balladeers in particular. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars On Further Review
The author makes it abundantly clear that without the backing of a labor union, most workers stand little chance of countering unilateral and capricious employer actions. A collective bargaining agreement is a quasi-constitution that provides for due process for workers in many workplace situations. Otherwise, employees simply work "at the will" of employers with no recourse to challenge decisions. 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Important Michael Yates Book
Over the past decade, economist Michael Yates has written a number of books for working people -- "Power on the Job," "The Labor Law Handbook," "Longer Hours, Fewer Jobs: Employment andUnemployment in the United States" and now "Why UnionsMatter." Yates manages to write in a clear readable style and, at thesame time, talk about complex matters. He is also one of the very fewnonlawyers who has an understanding and grasp of the role of law. "WhyUnions Matter" manages to provide a lot of information about unionhistory, labor economics, and even how to organize a union and bargain acontract in a very concise book. While I might differ with Yates on somedetails, I think this book makes a valuable contribution. It and his otherbooks should be on every unionist's bookshelf, and unionists should lobbytheir public libraries to carry Yates' books. 4-0 out of 5 stars For some, unions matter; for most, unions are an irrelevancy
Yates does present a good basic review of the trials and tribulations and the benefits of unions over the last century or so. But there is much disingenuity in this book. He points out that much of the basis of earlyunions was an urban-based solidarity of workers who lived, worshipped, andworked in close proximity in the early decades of the 20th century. Hecalls for a renewed, if not similar, solidarity among mainstream workerstoday; but the demographics of US workers and the structure of industriesare far different. The closest example today of old time solidarity may bethe relationship of black churches and neighborhoods and municipal workers.Other than workers from union families and left-liberal college professors, most US workers in many segments of the economy don't have a clue aboutunions and what they know is negative. His calls for worker activism in thepolitical process and within workplaces have to be reconciled with thereality of political apathy and workplace authority. That is the groundthat must be tilled for solidarity. For the one in ten workers that are inunions, the NLRA and NLRB and well as union officialdom probably containand constrain as much as empower workers. For example, changing nationalunion affiliation is not viewed with equanimity. Yates is too accepting ofUS-style unionism; for example German-style works councils could have beencontrasted with US unions in terms of giving workers agency. Also, it seemsthat Yates derives far too much satisfaction from the fact that the AFL-CIOwill now talk to left-liberal academics. He needs to appreciate better thatthe activists of bygone eras were generated from within the working classwhich reflected an inherent understanding of their class condition. Howmany Americans today even have a notion of class? As stated, Yates' bookdoes a good job of showing the state of AFL-CIO unionism. But the bookwould not be satisfying for those who have critically examined thatterrain. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars full of incomprehensible jargon, inaccuracies, & arrogance
This book exemplifies why I tend to stay away from "critical studies" (or whatever academic current this represents).Written by a professor in an obscure vocabulary that reeks of self-appointed elitism, it develops a convoluted argument against McDonald's as a cultural force that is subverting the polticial process in America and even the world. He claims that a burger is not just a burger, but instead eating one is a political act and even a religious ritual without offering anything in support of such claims except his weird academic discipline.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book in cultural studies and labor
This book is a refreshing break from the self-indulgent prattle of cultural studies.Taking an autobiographical theme, blending it with a bricolage of good research, the author looks at the power behind the McDonald's corporation.Examining the hegemonic implications of McDonald's, Kincheloe never ceases to entertain, teach, and create the best page-turner of the year--read this book if you are interested in consumer colonialism. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Across the Great Divide
When he's good, he's great. Some passages in this book, especially those dealing with Beck's idea of a new civil society that must be forged out of the remains of the social welfare contract, are inspiring. When he's not so good, it's because he's repetitive, or because he's speaking so generally about the effects of the global economy that he veers into vague abstraction at the expense of driving his thesis home.Because it's a challenging thesis -- the idea of paid civil work as a way to (re)create a truly democratic society -- and because it's articulation is at least partially supported through data, it's easy to forgive the sometimes too-general perspective.3-0 out of 5 stars Bobos in purgatory
As Beck observes in his chapter on the US, Americans and Europeans see the world very differently. If, like many Americans, you think that life in US is good and getting better you may have some trouble connecting with Beck's perspective.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We have seen walmart and it is us.
Savagely funny and pointed, Dicker pulls no punches in his crystalization of the walmart juggernaut as it seeks to dominate a retail landscape near you.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wal-Mart Exposed
I will admit right up front that John Dicker has written a clearly biased book against Wal-Mart. He is out to expose all that is bad about Wal-Mart and is reluctant to point out any good things about Wal-Mart (if there even are any). That being said, there are plenty of bad things to write about, and Dicker covers them all. The poor wages, forcing stores on communities that don't want one, foreign sweat shops, putting local small businesses out of business, and practicing censorship by not selling CDs and other items that don't mesh with the "family-friendly" image of Wal-Mart. The quintessential problem with Wal-Mart is that with every charge that is thrown at it, it views the each problem as a public relations matter and think that they need to work on adjusting their image, not their behavior.
