4-0 out of 5 stars Creating relationships instead of schmoozing
I found this book quite inspirational. Although I love spending time with people talking and getting to know them better, I've always been leery of the concept of "networking." It brings to mind a picture of an insincere jerk working the room, brown-nosing the people who can help him get ahead and ignoring everyone else.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book. Great Ideas.
Keith Ferrazzi obviously understands the importance of career karma. He practices what he preaches and provides countless examples of ways to be an effective networker, build your personal brand, and expand your success. This book helps destroy many networking myths and teaches us that the one important rule in networking is to 'give' to the members of your network. Keith has built his own personal brand on his unique and innate relationship-building skills and he shares with us so many different ways to network, that every reader will be able to find the ones that are authentic for them.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Relationship Approach
I was in the middle of reading Keith's book and took it with me on a recent cruise vacation.I recognized the same book being read by a fellow traveler and introduced myself. We chatted about the book and our businesses and exchanged business cards. The presence of the book itself was the perfect introduction to our conversation!Fun, fabulous, and completely natural is how I would describe Keith Ferrazzi's approach to building a network as wide (and deep) as you want. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a book on economics that even I can understand!
This is the book I have been looking for!I sure wish I'd found this book let's say five years ago or maybe $5,000 ago (lol)! Now I'm a big dummie, especially when it comes to economics, but I plan to make millions in the near future by gaining some kind of angle or secret.Mr CR McConnell breaks down all those confusing economic things that have stood between and my dreams of understanding just how money works for years. I recomend this book for anyone that wants to help themselves out economically and plans to help other people out with their money too.Look for me on the cover of Fortune Magazine!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Macroeconomics Text Available
As far as I'm concerned, McConnell's "Economics" is the most thorough and well-structured macroeconomics text available. The examples are smart and clear, and the information fresh and updated, unlike other texts in this area of study. My vote: 5 stars.
4-0 out of 5 stars Close but no cigar.
McConnell and Brue do a B+ job in this book. However,it does not equal Samuelson's introductory textbookin economics in explanatory power in a number of areas. In this review I will concentrate on just one point of comparison concerning the paradox of thrift.McConnell and Brue effectively discuss this paradox at the macro economic level using the short run aggregate supply curve's three ranges-the horizontal Keynesian range, the upward sloping synthesis range and the Classical-Neoclassical vertical range. If the economy is operating in the Keynesian range or the lower part of the synthesis range, then McConnell and Brue correctly show that more current savings will lead to less future savings due to a decrease in investment and a reverse multiplier effect reducing spending. On the other hand, they correctly show that if the economy is operating in the vertical range, more savings will reduce inflationary pressures while making it possible for investment to increase IF(and only if)businessmen have correct expectations about the future.Samuelson also goes through this analysis. However, Samuelson goes one step further. Samuelson first discusses the linkage at the microeconomic level between the paradox of thrift and its microfoundations in the Production Possibilities Curve(PPF).Essentially, if the economy is operating inside the frontier(on the horizontal Keynesian range or upward sloping portion of the synthesis range),then more savings is detrimental and moves the economy deeper into the interior of the PPF.On the other hand,if the ecomomy is operating on the boundary of the PPF,then more savings can potentially be transformed into more investment, assuming that businessmen, operating in the private sector, have correct expectations about the future.Samuelson demonstrates that in the interior the micro optimality conditions break down and are not operational.McConnell and Brue do not cover this in their textbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I bought the book for a class but I highly reccommend it to anyone aspiring to be a leader in their given profession.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good motivational book
Leadership is to be an active process that gathers people to participate in a common vision.Leaders are to set a good example, take risks, encourage others, and never quit.Although the authors present their book as a new approach to leadership, they share nothing that is original. For instance, under "Model the Way," leaders are encouraged to follow the Biblical principle of Matthew 5:37- "But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'" (NKJV), and of Ephesians 4:29- "Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them (NLT)."In "Encourage the Heart," the authors appear to utilize B.F. Skinner's "operant conditioning" theory by suggesting leaders to provide rewards and congratulate people for work-related achievements."Enable Others to Act" is built on the principle of teamwork as found in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27- "The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up only one body... each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it" (NLT).From a secular standpoint, the book offers good insight; however, from a Biblical leadership model, it falls short in certain areas. For example, the best leader to model is the one who models Christ- "Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ" (1 Cor. 11:1 NKJV), while the attitude of a leader should be: "Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men" (NASB).Leadership should never be taken lightly, in fact the Bible says, "Let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment" (James 3:1). The real challenge for leaders is to exhibit Christ-likeness in the workplace by achieving success without succumbing to greed and resisting the temptation for power and prestige, while gathering workers to work as "one body." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quick Read, excellent motivator!
I loved this book. I recommend purchasing it for anyone in sales. I gained some truly interesting tidbits. The website and newsletter for Jeff Gitomer really adds to the overall enjoyment of learning better sales techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Changed the way I thought about the selling process!
Gitomer's book helped me turn my slumping sales career into a blossoming cash cow.I found his ideas especially useful in the real estate profession. The relationships I was able to build with my potential customers solidified their trust in me and allowed the buying process to move forward, smoothly and efficiently. This is the second book of Jeffrey's that I have bought and each one gets better and better, chock full of new idea and strategies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Andrew Mellon was the greatest of the Mellon investors, treasury secretary to three presidents, and created the National Gallery
This is one of those big biographies that I wanted to spend a bit more time with because of the way the life that is the subject of the book connects with the age in which he lived, how the generations before conditioned his opportunities and how the way he lived and affected his times echoed into the next generation.Andrew Mellon is an enigmatic character that has great complexities and yet at the same time seems to be not fully realized in his personal life.At his economic zenith, he paid more personal taxes than all but two men. While never nearly as rich as Carnegie or the senior Rockefeller, he was still amazingly wealthy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not one of Womack's best works
I personally do a vast amount of reading with lean enterprise being of special interest. Womack has done some great work, but this is a "tough read" even for serious lean enthusiasts. I typically finish a book of this length within 2-3 days then re-read it and highlight. It literally took me 11 weeks because I was lulled to a point in which reading further would be of no benefit and would have to put it back on the shelf and revisit it days later. I realize that scholarly and business writing is not especially exciting as I am constantly reading and doing research but this one was tough even for me, an avid reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Common Sense isn't so Common
This book provides a very unique perspective on how to run a business. These methodologies can be applied to any industry, as the authors suggest.
5-0 out of 5 stars LEAN as it expands
After reading "The machine that saved the world" (which I recommend reading before this one) from the same great authors, I got more and more interested in the LEAN concept. As described in this book, by 1996, LEAN became a way of thinking and operating, expanding around the world in several industries. Although this book gives a clear explanation of LEAN principles, it is still oriented into manufacturing. This book is not enough if you are willing to implement LEAN in your organization, but rather convinces you of applying it if you are still hesitating. Check out the latest book in this series "Lean Solutions: How Companies and Customers Can Create Value and Wealth Together". ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Little more than a collection of anecdotes
Intrigued by the relative frequency of citation of this book in the new "web 2.0" universe, I was disappointed to find only a sequence of factoids on social experiments and little in the way of analysis. From the very beginning of the book the reader is invited to agree with the central thesis (that a crowd of independent individuals does better than a smaller elite group) and it very much feels like evidence is carefully selected to reinforce the author's argument. The book could have been twice as thin without losing much of its substance.I would qualify it as a light business read, entertaining but not quite convincing if you're not part of the choir.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on human behavior!
If you want to know more about the importance of shedding all political alliegences and affiliations, read this book. What a wonderful body of knowledge with just the right stories to highlight the profound insights into the recesses of our heart.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why do the Crowds buy this book if they are so Wise?
This book is basically a magazine article that has been expanded to fill out an entire book (this has been noted by others)

Editorial Review

It began with a simple $27 loan. After witnessing the cycle of poverty that kept many poor women enslaved to high-interest loan sharks in Bangladesh, Dr. Muhammad Yunus lent money to 42 women so they could purchase bamboo to make and sell stools. In a short time, the women were able to repay the loans while continuing to support themselves and their families. With that initial eye-opening success, the seeds of the Grameen Bank, and the concept of microcredit, were planted.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Straight from the Founder
If you are interested in microfinance, this book is a prerequisite.Dr. Yunus gives a historical account of the rise of micro-credit and the Grameen Bank.Of course, he is also the biggest advocate of the program. Therefore, most of his arguments are pro-expansion of micro-credit.In spite of this, he manages to show a clear and compelling picture of the micro-finance industry. But, make sure you balance the information with other microfinance books that does not proselytize as much.A good example is "Beyond Micro-Credit" by Thomas Fisher.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Yunus tells a great story about his bank and its battle against poverty.Outstanding business model for someone interested in micro lending.

4-0 out of 5 stars Encylopedic Treatment of Econometrics
If you have taken a course in econometrics, this is one of the best econometrics references that you can have on your bookshelf. There is ample discussion on linear regression models and all the required concepts from mathematical statistics that are needed. It just hits on time series and panel data, but clearly those are topics for two different books altogether. This book gets updated frequently and the format is reorganized to make things easier to understand. However, some times the reorganization does not work for the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for graduate students
This is a good advanced book in econometrics. I would definitely not recommend it to undergrad students unless they are really comfortable with matrix algebra and statistics. It is not an introductory book, but, if the reader has already taken some econometrics courses and needs a more advanced text, this book is very useful, especially for graduate students. It is particularly good at explaining concepts in a way that slightly easier books do not. I use Greene's book as a reference and I have personally contacted William Greene to ask him some questions and he is very friendly and willing to help. I would only suggest using another book for understanding time series since Greene's coverage on that is not great.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tool for leveling up the people who work for you
Zapp! is a book that my company uses in the management training seminars we give to employees who are taking on management responsibilities for the first time.Lessons on empowerment are told through a fictional (even science fictional) story of managers at a large company coming to understand why their organization is so disfunctional. The story, although initially pretty hokey, serves nicely as a landscape upon which to illustrate extremes of highly successful and highly unsuccessful management techniques. The people on my team who have read it have learned quite a lot and are applying the learnings regularly. It is not at all uncomon for one of them to raise a concern over some a counter-productive management incident by describing the "Sapp!" that occured. And it is rewarding to hear one of them respond to a positive and empowering interaction by smiling and simply saying "Zapp!"
5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful, Practical, Helpful and FUN!
This short book is really one of the best I've found for winding a manager through the dynamics that can disrupt a team.I went through an 18 month management training course and still come back to this book more often.Managers can inspire their teams or deflate their will to keep giving their best. This book uses a fictional world to illustrate how to do that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
Don't waste your time.Another simplistic story book written in the same childish way as "The Goal".If you like fairytales about dragons and putting out fires then this is a good book.If you want to read about TQM (Six Sigma) or employee empowerment read an intelligent discussion about the pros and cons, but not this silly rag.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book to learn MS Project 2003 AND scheduling techniques
I purchased this book as part of the "Microsoft Office Project 2003 Orange Belt Self Study Package" from IIL (Institute for International Learning). For those who understand the basic concepts of project management, the book is extremely educational as it will teach you the basics of MS Project, as well as various project scheduling techniques that you may not have been aware of.
5-0 out of 5 stars Reveals Many MSP Issues-but Not for Beginners
This book will not teach you how to perform 'work planning' (or scheduling) and it will not teach you the basics of how to use MS Project.I have at least 5 thick books that do that, and I consider most of them useless.I have been managing IT projects since the 1980s, and have used MS Project (MSP) since the early 1990s. I have spent many late hours struggling with its confusing and misleading and Poorly documented) functions that do not always do what you expect (or the help/manual says)it will do.I particulary dislike it's seemingly random choice to recalc a critical path, and changes dates and durations based only on resources. In June, my team (an experienced set of IT project managers)took advanced MS Project training from the "International Institute for Learning". All 15 people who attended the training said it was the best MS project training they had ever had!

5-0 out of 5 stars AN INTRIGUING "HOW-TO" OF LEADERSHIP COMMUNICATIONS
Baldoni's "Great Communication Secrets Of Great Leaders" is a well-researched and highly readable "how-to" of leadership communications. This author knows his material, and presents it through the interesting device of linking principles to some of the world's leading communicators. It was refreshing to read a business-centered book that focus specifically on the communication aspects of leadership, which Baldoni obviously understands quite well. As a former professional actor, I also enjoyed how the author links dynamic presentations to effective performance. This book is well worth the modest cover price.A definite "buy!" ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Guide, menu, toolbook, cookbook, non Toyota case studies...whatever you name it. It helps!
For those who had been deeply impressed by "The Toyota Way" and want to implement it to your business, this book is an excellent pracctical guide. There are plenty of charts, flow diagrams, tables, checklists, non Toyota examples, action plans, report forms etc etc which I find very helpful. I particularly like the "Reflect and Learn from the Process" Section (summary/key points/action items) in the end of each chapter. A book well worths its price! Highly recommended! However, please read "The Toyota Way" before this.

4-0 out of 5 stars How Do I Write a Review about an Insurance Book?
Well, I guess I can try to review this book from the only perspective I read it from: that of a student.I had to read it for my CFP class on Insurance, and, as an introduction to most forms of insurance, it explains the forms in a very methodical and systematic way; it was very easy to follow and tough to get completely lost.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very confused, unnecessarily complicated, and above all - dull.
If you're made to buy this book you have every right to hate the professor that makes you do so. This book is a punishment! Not only is it very expensive, but it also offers information that it is not relevant to the real world at all.
1-0 out of 5 stars horrible service
i never even got this book because apparently its not a book yet amazons web site said it was. it took me 4 phone calls with 4 different customer service reps for some one to figure that out. all they gave me for the inconvenance was a 15 dollar amazon gift card which i tryed to use and doesn't work. i still don't have the book i needed and it is 4 weeks into the semester. i have baought other things from amazon and gotten them but this expeirance makes me never want to use amazon again. i would like to give you a review of the actual book but i never recieved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily boring and difficult to read
This is required text for a graduate course I am taking, and I want to pull my hair out while being forced to read it. The political correctness in this book is overdone. One serious problem I had with this textbook was the way in which it seemed to start off on page 100 instead of page 1, because there is no introduction to Organizational Behavior. I don't know what to make of chapter 1...an HR manager's guide to political correctness on the job? The need to promote for diversity rather than for work performance? That is certainly what I got out of it. (Down with all white male CEOs!). It certainly doesn't introduce the diligent student to this subject. Sentences are long, drawn out, wordy. Concept paragraphs take a long time to come to the point.I find myself daydreaming by the time I've read half a page and have to start over, and part of this problem is that every page includes at least one sidebar. On page 40 of this text, the author talks about Feng Shui and it's three C's of design: clean, clear, and comfort, followed by this question: "What about the chi in your work and personal spaces--are you taking best advantage of "good" chi?" I do not recommend this book either for personal growth or for use as a textbook. ... Read more
