1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
The narrator has an unbelievably irratating voice! She has a LISP!!!!I swear!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Essential Steps to Projecting Yourself as a Confident, Engaging Man.
Standing tall, walking slow, improving your vocal communication - These are all essential steps to projecting yourself well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Odd
The tapes give good information, but the main speaker of the tapes contradicts what they say!Her voice is incredibly annoying and nasily sounding - I don't quite know how to describe it, but her voice has a very unattractive sound to it and almost sounds as if she has a lipse. However, everyone else featured in the tapes sound normal.I just find it odd that the main teacher's voice is so incredibly unattractive sounding. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!
Very informative and well written. This book definately had some good tips and advice on how to improve your public speaking. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good to lay a strong foundation....
I do a fair amount of public speaking and have found this book very helpful in many respects. It does an excellent job of covering the basics, includes some great tips that you might not think of on your own and also introduces some advanced topics without overwhelming you with lots of detail.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Dummies and Non-Dummies Alike
While I am not a huge fan of buying a book advertised as being for "dummies," I find the "...for Dummies" series to be very helpful for those of us unfamiliar with a certain topic. Needless to say, I am very unfamiliar with public speaking, unless you count the class I had in high school ten years ago, which I barely remember.

Some value for everyone.Half of the information is only appropriate for a professional speaker. I will not listen a second time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wow...bad
Or at least not what I was looking for...but based on all the other reviews here, I thought it was. This book has a very limited audience in mind, namely those who are giving "speeches", not just regular, everyday presentations and meetings. The name of the book is deceiving, and so are the reviews. The first chapter is the only one that is moderately worthwhile if you're actually looking for tips on becoming more confident.Otherwise, it is simply a laundry list of ways to give big speeches; not helpful at all to the average joe who works in corporate america and just wants to feel more confident.I realize this is difficult to teach in a book, but the other reviewers gave the impression that I might garner some tidbits on this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I facilitate new hire orientations at my job regularly and this book was excellent and very informative. I bought the book because I wanted to be learn all that I could about public speaking since part of my new job responsibilities required me to stand up before an audience. This book, once again was great and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be a better public speaker. ... Read more

I bought this tape expecting the "listen and learn" method of better speech that was promised. There are only two short exercises given in the 2 tapes, the rest is general information; some of which isunecessary, such as interview tips and how to keep your vocal chordshealthy.I wish they would have taken more time to give concrete help. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't wait more than 30 seconds to buy this book!
This book should be read by everyone!Whether you are a salesperson, a public speaker, or anyone that wants to communicate more effectively, this book will help you do it.Written in a breezy, interesting style, the author gives great suggestions on how to make a presentation effectively. It is a short book, by design. My only regret about this book is that I was unaware of its existence until a month ago.
4-0 out of 5 stars Agood little book about the art of communication
What sort of person do you really hate to engage in conversation? For me, it's somebody who doesn't know when to stop speaking.
1-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes 30 Seconds Is An Eternity
The most interesting thing about this book is that the author feels no pressure to legitimize his assertion that there is something special about 30 seconds. Because his background is in the field of television entertainment, (never to be confused with communications), he finds significance in the length of television commercials, which frequently run 30 seconds. That this is done for financial reasons, not attention-span reasons, has evaded him completely. HTGYPAI3SOL is just another in the endless chain of How To books penned by individuals struggling with delusions of expertise, whose only skill is self-promotion, that package the obvious and resell it to the gullible. Readers who find anything in this slim and overpriced tome even remotely surprising or counter-intuitive are advised to probe deeper into the self-help section of the bookstore for volumes on Shoe-Tying For Beginners, The ABCs Of Writing Your Name, and Gravity - It's Not Just A Good Idea, It's The Law. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice!
I was quite amazed by this book. Let me tell you about myself - I'm a semester away from graduating and entering the workforce (as an engineer). I'm unsure of what to do, I have those gitters about *everything*. How do I talk to the boss, not be embarassed giving a presentation, among everything else racking my brain (e.g. where will I work?). So to me, this book built my self-confidence and told me how to handle special situations, such as business lunches.5-0 out of 5 stars Try these techniques now
My career DOES depend on how I talk to an audience! This book was extremely beneficial to me.I present in front of groups all the time and started using some of these techniques, and they paid off beautifully.I also tend to be a hot-head when things don't go my way with my boss. After reading this book, I thought things through first, developed my game plan following the advice in the book and WON my argument, without my boss getting upset or even thinking it was an argument.Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring! Motivational!
This book was great. Some business books provide rote information, can be difficult to get through and hard to pull something out of it.But Talk Your Way To The Top is loaded with interesting stories that helped me relate to similar situations in my business.Since they are stories that everyone can relate to, that makes it easy to put the writer's suggestions to use.I find that I use something from the book everyday. You should definitely read this! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Only Theoretical Help in Public Speaking - Not Practical
The first few tracks of the audio CD does an excellent job of identifying all of the fears of public speaking, HOWEVER the majority of advice given in this book is theoretical. The book goes into stating the individual step (the theorectical help) then gives pseudo-testimonials of how her steps have been implemented by former students towards giving a great speech.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not Helpful For Me
Yes, the 7 steps can teach people in all types of careers and lifestyles to improve their oral communications skills but some of her methods are a bit "out there".For example: learning to focus on your voice as an instrument. The CD includes examples and anecdotes from Wilder's own work, and a number of exercises to help the reader implement the ideas set forth. If you're looking to overcome your fear of public speaking, join Toastmasters and skip this CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars An effective program for overcoming your fears...
As part of my Lotusphere preparation, I've been reading 7 Steps To Fearless Speaking by Lilyan Wilder. She's a communication consultant who has coached a number of broadcast correspondents. In this book, she outlines seven steps to take in order to become a more effective public speaker. The seven steps are:Experience Your Voice; Get A Response And Structure Your Thoughts; Establish A Dialogue; Tap Your Creativity; Learn To Persuade; Achieve Your Higher Objective; and Give The Gift Of Your Conviction.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We should constantly remind yourselves
I don't know if I'm the best person to rate this book ...'cause I LOVE this dude,i think Larry is awesome and this book is too, I mean it's about communication and he is the king! The book is like a rule bookon how to be a better communication person,we all have heard many of his tips in life before but we just don't remember to use it on a daily basis and that's what it brings up to ushow to usethe things to know intalks and basically LISTEN ,LISTEN ,LISTEN..pretty much the key

4-0 out of 5 stars A Reminder
This book is a good time killer. You don't have to read it straight on through because there are different sections to it. It took me about 3 weeks to read this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars not particularly insightful....
This book provides some good tips, but they are not particularly insightful. Larry King treats his readers as extremely shy ppl or those who cannot even strike a conversation with a stranger. I think anyeone with average social skills would already know most of the things mentioned in his book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stupid
This tape is an absolute waste of money and time. The approach they took is stupid and childish. Don't bother...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great content and well worked out humor
Well, I really enjoyed the presentation. I love the 2 presenters and would like to get more of their work. I thought it was professionally done and very funny. I cannot really understand why the other reviewers hated it. Maybe it was not their kind of humor or maybe they expected something different or maybe they were just in a bad mood.
1-0 out of 5 stars don't bother
I bought this tape set to listen to in the car on the way to work. Unfortunately it was a big disappointment. I expected some professional help for a working professional but what I got was some childish play withbad ethnic voice imitations that would probably offend several ethnicgroups. Some of the information seems to be outdated although the copyrightis 1998. This tape set sounds more like a college freshman's attempt atgetting a "C" in a writing class. No useful information here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You won't be nervous again
This book saved me. The "Sarnoff Squeeze" is miraculous. I use it before speeches and musical performances, and it is fool-proof. Read this book carefully, and practice, and I bet you'll get results.

1-0 out of 5 stars Still nervous
I just started graduate school and thought this book might help meovercome nervousness during the many presentations I'll have to do. Thisbook offers very general tips for many different speaking situations(business, tv interview, etc.)and just a couple of techniques forcontrolling nervousness. If you're looking for a book that focuses more oncontrolling nerves and less on what color to wear or the perfect lightingfor your face then you really should look elsewhere.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing....
Perhaps my fear is a little too severe for this tape, but I did not find it at all useful.I was looking for a way to mitigate my physical symptoms and the author's suggestions/tips did not help in any way. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor sound quality when listened to in the car
If you are going to purchase this cassette with the intent of listening to it in the car, then buy something else. After enjoying two other Books on CD, I inserted this Book on Cassette and was astonished at how poor the sound was. After 15 minutes, I could bear it no longer.5-0 out of 5 stars Becoming a Great Speaker
I have been speaking professionally for 3 years.Prior to that, I spent years speaking in Toastmasters and other non-paid forums.I have read numerous books on public speaking, but by far my favorite is Lee Glickstein's Be Heard Now!The tape complement's the book very well.2-0 out of 5 stars Too much waffle, not enough meat!
Did I listen to a different tape from the one that most listeners awarded five stars?I found it full of new age waffle that certainly wouldn't help me prepare a speech.I did find a few useful tips on tape 2, but it was along time to wait! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Listen To This While Driving
Have common sense? If so, no need to buy this waste of money and time. I borrowed these tapes from a friend and listened to them while driving (nearly put me to sleep). While Van Fleet's suggestions are often valid, they are not particularly inspirational. For instance, the first tape boiled down to "be nice to people" and you will be able to "control them." The examples he used were also very poor. If I used any of his suggestions, I think that people would find me to be extremely superficial (or worse). One of the most amusing suggestions was to tell a waitress that her perfume "makes me feel like a little boy again." Can you say, "Check please?"If you want to have conversation power as Van Fleet suggests, just consult your common sense and the golden rule. Treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself. And save your money by not buying this product.

2-0 out of 5 stars Never say "Hello"?
There was a time in the 80s-early-90s when the market didn't seem to get enough from the self-help wave. So hungry was it that some publishers would release anything without care for quality of content. Look no further, these tapes are a shameless plagiarizing of Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People, at times verbatim! Only more manipulative, if you can imagine such a thing.
2-0 out of 5 stars Want to Sound Cliched?Buy this Book
I just don't know about this book.I admire the fact that it offers specific things to say when encountered with situations, but at the same time, that's its Achilles' heel. For example, people who constantly ask me what I do make me feel important, but at the same time can get on my nerves. That is the thrust of the book: learn as much as you can about the person with whom you are talking. The problem is I just don't feel the suggestions for making first-time conversation will impress anyone. And telling someone to never, ever say "hello" when answering the phone?Maybe it's me, but folks who answer the phone "Top of the mornin'" sound really silly if they are not a close friend. And then you laugh.Imagine it coming from a stranger? You would think he is off his rocker. In my opinion, this subject matter is better covered in a workshop so that one can see the effectiveness. It's a case of "works for some but not for others."The author appears to have hastily thrown something together as if the publisher said, "Write us something...or else!"I'll take the "or else." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Powerful and useful
Linguist and management consultant Sarah Myers McGinty, Ph.D., shows how to communicate in many situations using just two basic styles of talking, language from the center and language from the edge.Myers McGinty also shows how to tell whether you communicate from the center or the edge and how to mix and match the two styles to attract new clients, correct employees and run meetings. Power Talk is worth a listen.
1-0 out of 5 stars Power Talk????
It seems as if authors and publishers have decided to sell something that is marginal at best, just include the words Power,Prestige, wealth all seemingly offering some simple strategy to imporove and empower your life, Power talk fails to live up to its title. It is a ok book on how we talk and what the 2 distinct communication styles are all about. But it doesnt take a 200 page book to tell us that the key is to merge the two? This book is geared towards salespeople and corporate executives, if you work for a firm of 20 or less this probably won't help much. The key to success is adaptation to the enviroment your in rather than discuss key words or stratagies for enhancing vocabulary, structure , etiquitte this book just rehashes the adaptation philosophy. Probably great for some but the majority will just be wasting their time with this title.

3-0 out of 5 stars Semi-helpful
The first six chapters are helpful and contain useful information about the use of Language from the Center and from the Edge. However, the next two chapters are simply the author's social commentary about not pre-judging people on their differences in communication. The last chapter is just an overview of the study of linguistics. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Basics: Presented Well
Better know today as a conservative columnist for the Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan also has a very strong pedigree as a political speech-writer for George H. Bush and Ronald Reagan.
1-0 out of 5 stars Good Grief!
I love reading Peggy Noonan's WSJ column; so let's get that out of the way right now. Peggy generally writes in a stream-of-consciousness form that I like. It captures my attention from the first sentence and holds me to the end. But not this book. After a page or two I noticed I was skipping ahead, looking for the bait and the hook. It's not there. That's Writing 101. She knows that! What I suspect is this: Her publisher contracted with her for a give-back linked to something else, and she wasnt interested in the project. It shows!

2-0 out of 5 stars Seems out of touch with the painfully shy
The book has a few tips for what to say in various situations.Maybe they would be useful (or at least good for a laugh) for a person who doesn't have shyness problems. But the book doesn't address anything at all about overcoming the problem of shyness.Shy people experience pain and sometimes even panic in social situations.Simply telling them to "have a positive attitude" doesn't solve the problem - we need to know how! 1-0 out of 5 stars Very bad
This audiobook was definitely a waste of time to listen to. Everything is commonsense, and not inspiring at all. Personally, I like books and tapes that pump you up, but in an intelligent way. This has none of that, and the ideas contained in this tape aren't worth spending your time on (ie. everybody already knows them, and it doesn't take a person with a university degree or PHD to explain them to you).

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I was eagerly looking forward to this book, but am very disappointed by it.I just received it today, and though admittedly I haven't had time to read it fully, I have skimmed the topics and several dozen pages, and I'm not even going to bother reading it.This book would seem to be useless to anyone but a yuppie business executive holding million-dollar meetings and having power lunches. And obtaining such a position would seem to me to require a reasonably outgoing, aggressive personality, not the painfully shy person to which this book is allegedly directed.Oh, there's also sections on how to meet with difficult clients, and how to become a master salesman. All topics of great interest to a painfully shy person (I'm being sarcastic, of course). If you want a book by this author, buy his other book, How to Start a Conversation and Make Friends. It's much better, and has lots of halfway amusing cartoons.Gabor has completely missed the mark with Talking With Confidence For the Painfully Shy.Avoid it. ...
